On April 14th, Jason wrote in his blog: I did it! I just completed my first ultramarathon (超级马拉松). I’m feeling tired and suffering a pain in my feet. But I’m really proud of myself. I didn’t think I could do it. I’ve only been running long-distance for three years.
I’ve completed five normal marathons (which are 42 km) but this was much harder than they were. This race was 140 km and it took place over two days. I was very tired after yesterday’s run, but I had to run for seven hours again today!
I think the most important thing for me is to get the speed right. If I go too fast, I don’t have enough energy for the end of the race. If I go too slowly, all the other runners leave me behind, and it feels like I’ll never catch up with them.
My family can’t understand why I like it. I didn’t like team sport in high school. But long-distance running is different. It’s a challenge. I like pushing myself to do better. I’m not trying to finish first. All I want is to do a better time with each run. And of course, the other good thing is that I’ve raised quite a lot of money for charity with this ultramarathon. I would like to express a big “thank you” to all my friends and family who agreed to give money to the Red Cross. I’m going to do it again next year. Maybe I’ll be able to raise even more!
4. How many normal marathons has Jason completed?
A. Five. B. Six. C. Seven. D. Eight.
5. What is the most important thing for Jason in the race of ultramarathon?
A. To run fast all the time. B. To save energy for the next race.
C. To get the speed right. D. To leave the other runners behind.
6. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Family party. B. Team sport. C. High school. D. Long-distance running.
7. Why did Jason run the ultramarathon?
A. To keep healthy and become famous. B. To earn money and live a better life.
C. To get a big “thank you” and make friends. D. To challenge himself and raise money for charity.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. D

Seba Stephens is only 10 years old, but he’s a very talented musician. Before he turned three, his parents asked him what he wanted for his birthday. “Drums!” (鼓) he answered. His parents weren’t sure, but after seeing him play the drums at a local music store, they decided he was serious. They bought him a set of junior drums. It was a huge step. “He didn’t stop playing ever”, says his dad, Everett.
But soon Seba grew unhappy, he couldn’t get his junior drums to make the sounds that the famous drummer Copeland made. Therefore, his parents bought him a set of professional drums and sent him to a drum teacher. Just a few months later, his teacher reported that Seba was learning extremely quickly and needed a higher level of training. He was still four.
His father encouraged him to explore music in other ways. In 2020, Seba got special permission to join a summer guitar online program at Berklee College of Music as an 8-year-old. To keep up, he had to practice 36 hours a week. After the busy summer, Everett thought Seba might want a break. However, Seba asked his parents to home-school him so that he could continue the program during the school year. Seba did school work in the morning. In the afternoon he worked on music. What would you do if your best friend and you have different ideas? At first, I didn’t know what to do when I found that my best friend Karina disagreed (不同意) with me on some things.
When we first met in a summer camp, we got along so well.
But then something happened at a picnic. “Did you hear about the shopping center news?” asked one of our friends Levar. “They want to cut down lots of trees to make room for a shopping center.”
“That’s terrible! We have to stop that,” I said.
“I disagree,” said Karina. “The shopping center would offer new jobs to people in need.”
“But animals would lose their homes!” I said. “I want people to have jobs, but it doesn’t mean cutting down trees.”
I wished Karina could agree with me about saving the trees, but she had her reasons for believing what she said. I was so angry that I didn’t talk to her for days.
Later, my mother knew it and said to me, “No two people are the same. You should respect (尊重) each other. And no matter what happens, the difference doesn’t mean losing a good friend.”
After listening to my mom’s words, I said sorry to Karina and we are still good friends now.

C
