When I was a child, my grandmother often said people and communication mattered. She backed that up with her own behavior. When she walked down the street, she spoke to everyone. It didn’t matter if you were an elderly person or a child, or if you spoke English or Spanish. She had a smile and a conversation for you.
However, as she aged, she noticed that her lifestyle was becoming rare. She wanted to know why, in the age of technology, most people believe they don’t have time for communication that’s longer than a text message. In fact, people hardly speak to one another nowadays. As much as I hated to admit it, I had noticed it too.
My grandmother’s wisdom inspired me to have a pen pal. It all started in 2013. I had gone to the University of Southern California to meet with Kerstin Zilm, who wanted to interview me about being a student struggling financially. I didn’t know much about German culture or the German audience who would listen to the show, but I agreed to do so because I remembered my grandmother’s wisdom. I felt that telling my story was better than keeping it to myself. You never knew who could learn from your life experiences.
Soon after learning my story from the show, a woman named Renate reached out to me, asking how she could help me financially with college. I was thankful that Renate wanted to help, but my pride didn’t allow me to accept money. Thinking of my grandmother’s wisdom, I didn’t let the communication stop. I emailed Renate back, thanking her sincerely.
From then on, Renate and I often emailed each other. She even sent me gifts and cakes on my birthday. And whenever I was in trouble, she was always there. She sent me virtual hugs at the moments when I needed them most. Though I have never met her in person, she is one of the most important people in my life. And I promise I will turn all the virtual hugs into real ones one day.
41. What does the author intend to tell us about her grandmother?
A. She made lots of foreign friends. B. She valued interpersonal relationships.
C. She enjoyed hanging about in the streets. D. She was good at dealing with family problems.
42. What did the author notice about people today?
A. They prefer to be alone. B. They dream of having a pen pal.
C. They dislike sending long text messages. D. They have limited communication with others.
43. Why did the author decide to do the interview?
A. To benefit people through storytelling. B. To spread her grandmother’s lessons.
C. To win some financial support. D. To gain practical knowledge.
44. What happened to the author after the show was broadcast?
A. She set up an online chat club. B. She was able to afford college.
C. She developed a deep friendship. D. She found a language learning partner.
45. Which of the following can best describe Renate?
A. Kind and supportive. B. Talented and careful.
C. Patient and creative. D. Honest and responsible.

A wildfire in New Mexico, a state in the southwestern US, has burned for nearly two months, consuming more than 315, 000 acres of land — an area about the size of the city of Los Angeles.
“With climate change, it seems like the dominoes are beginning to fall,” NASA hydrologist JT Reager told the BBC. “We get warmer temperatures, we get less rain and snow. The reservoirs (水库) start drying up, then in a place like the West of the US, we get wildfires.”
In recent years, wildfires have wreaked havoc across countries including the US and Australia.
These fires destroy homes and businesses, claim lives and also negatively impact the environment. As climate change worsens, global temperatures increase and so does the risk of wildfires. A recent report from the United Nations Environment Programme and GRID-Arendal, a partner organization in Norway, reveals that wildfires are becoming more frequent and severe.
This is harmful to people around the globe. According to the joint UN report, it is estimated that the yearly “economic burden from wildfire for the United States is between $7. 1 billion and $347. 8 billion”.
Another article published in Nature journal on April 19 found that wildfires have created seasonal pollution patterns in the northwestern US. Between 2002 and 2018, carbon monoxide (一氧化碳) levels increased every year for the month of August in the area.
In 2019 and 2020, Australian bushfires displaced millions, filled the air with deadly clouds of smoke and killed thousands of koalas.
Forest fires are common in China too. In the recent decade, the total number of forest fires in the country every year has increased to more than 2,000 cases, according to The Paper.
Greater Hinggan Mountains (大兴安岭) is one of the important forestry bases in China. The National Forestry and Grassland Administration adopted mountain watchtowers, forest cameras and aerial drones (无人机) to prevent forest fires in the summer.
46. The author quotes Reager’s words in the second paragraph to ______.
A. show the seriousness of the recent wildfire in the US
B. list some environmental problems caused by wildfires
C. explain how climate change contributes to wildfires
D. provide possible solutions to wildfires around the globe
47. What does the underlined phrase “wreaked havoc” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Created pollution. B. Been out of control.
C. Cause d great damage. D. Drawn much attention.
48. Wildfires are so common and fiercely because ______.
A. global warming makes it easier to happen
B. water in the reservoirs is drying up
C. putting out wildfires costs too much
D. Economic development burnden is high
49. How has wildfire affected the American Northwest according to the text?
A. Millions of people have been displaced.
B. It has caused seasonal patterns of pollution.
C. It has led to around $7. 1 billion economic loss annually.
D. Carbon monoxide levels have increased year on year.
50. What do we know about forest fire s in China?
A. There has been over 2,000 cases in the last decade.
B. Greater Hinggan Mountains experienced the largest one.
C. They were not very common several decades ago.
D. Measures have been taken to prevent them from happening.

在第二段“‘With climate change, it seems like the dominoes are beginning to fall,’ NASA hydrologist JT Reager told the BBC. ‘We get warmer temperatures, we get less rain and snow. The reservoirs (水库) start drying up, then in a place like the West of the US, we get wildfires.’(“随着气候变化,多米诺骨牌似乎开始倒下,”美国宇航局水文学家JT·Reager告诉BBC。“气温升高,雨雪减少。水库开始干涸,然后在美国西部这样的地方,我们就会发生野火。”)”中,作者引用美国宇航局水文学家Reager的话是为了解释气候变化是如何导致野火的。故选C。
【47题详解】
词句猜测题。第四段中“These fires destroy homes and businesses, claim lives and also negatively impact the environment. (这些火灾摧毁了房屋和企业,夺去了生命,还对环境产生了负面影响。)”具体说明了野火在包括美国和澳大利亚在内的国家造成了严重破坏,是对第三段“In recent years, wildfires have wreaked havoc across countries including the US and Australia.”
根据第四段中“As climate change worsens, global temperatures increase and so does the risk of wildfires.(随着气候变化的恶化,全球气温上升,野火的风险也随之增加。)” 故选A项。
根据第六段“Another article published in Nature journal on April 19 found that wildfires have created seasonal pollution patterns in the northwestern US. (4月19日发表在《自然》杂志上另一篇文章发现,野火在美国西北部造成了季节性污染模式。)”可知,野火对美国西北部造成了季节性的污染模式。故选B。

I’ve started to hate traveling. When my friends heard me say that, they were all shocked and confused, because I’m an absolute travel fanatic. It’s not that I dislike traveling itself: rather, I dislike the new definition that modern people have given to it, a fundamentally flawed understanding of tourism. What I hate most during every trip is hearing, “This place is perfect for photos, take a few for me.” It seems our travels have become nothing more than check-ins and photo sessions.
Traveling is no longer about admiring scenery, marveling at the magnificent landscapes of our motherland, or experiencing new lifestyles. Instead, I see crowds of people snapping pictures and checking off locations, hardly anyone pausing to genuinely soak in the sights and experiences with their own eyes and hearts. The once poetic journey has transformed into the so-called modern travel trilogy: approach, photograph, leave. The sole purpose of traveling now seems to be posting on social media, showing off to everyone, and immersing oneself in a world constructed solely by one’s own posts. The goal of traveling has shifted to merely visiting check-in spots and completing the task of “checking in”.
Travel has changed, and so have many aspects of our lives. We experience too little genuine joy within. I’ve asked my students why they study, and almost all of them answer that it’s to be admitted into a. good university, seek a good job, and earn a lot of money. I don’t think these are wrong or even unnecessary aspirations, but where is our inner happiness and peace? When will we be able to travel for the sake of traveling, to learn for the sake of learning, to go shopping for the sake of going shopping and to preserve our authenticity? After all, we are human beings. How many of us are living day-to-day, going through the motions, turning life into a chore, a mere existence? We still have “poetry and distant horizons” to pursue. We must strive for what truly defines us as human, or we risk losing our humanity.
51. Which of the following word can best replace the underlined word “fanatic” in paragraph 1?
A. Journalist. B. Psychologist. C. Enthusiast. D. Artist.
52. What is the author’s main reason for hating traveling nowadays?
A. The inconvenience of modern transportation.
B. The increasing cost of traveling.
C. The overcrowding of tourist attractions.
D. The shift in people’s perception of traveling.
53. What is the author’s attitude towards the “modern travel trilogy”?
A. Favorable. B. Disapproving. C. Indifferent. D. Ambiguous.
54. What does the author think about the students’ answers regarding the purpose of studying?
A. They are completely wrong.
B. They are overly materialistic.
C. They show a lack of ambition.
D. They are reasonable but lack a deeper pursuit.
55. What does the author imply in the passage?
A. The author regrets becoming a travel fanatic.
B. Modern society has lost touch with genuine experiences.
C. Traveling is no longer an enjoyable activity.
D. The purpose of traveling has shifted to social media.
C 52. D 53. B 54. D 55. B

划线词句前文“I’ve started to hate traveling. When my friends heard me say that, they were all shocked and confused(我开始讨厌旅行了。当我的朋友们听到我这么说时,他们都很震惊和困惑)”说明朋友对作者讨厌旅行的说法感到震惊和困惑,因为作者非常热爱旅行,从而推知“because I’m an absolute travel fanatic(因为我是一个绝对的旅行fanatic)”中划线词fanatic应为“狂热者,爱好者”的意思,与C项同义。故选C项。
【52题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“It’s not that I dislike traveling itself; rather, I dislike the new definition that modern people have given to it, a fundamentally flawed understanding of tourism.(并不是我不喜欢旅行本身;相反,我不喜欢现代人给它的新定义,这是对旅游业的一种根本错误的理解。)”和第二段“Traveling is no longer about admiring scenery, marveling at the magnificent landscapes of our motherland, or experiencing new lifestyles. Instead, I see crowds of people snapping pictures and checking off locations, hardly anyone pausing to genuinely soak in the sights and experiences with their own eyes and hearts. The once poetic journey has transformed into the so-called modern travel trilogy: approach, photograph, leave. 【55题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文特别是第二段中“The sole purpose of traveling now seems to be posting on social media, showing off to everyone, and immersing oneself in a world constructed solely by one’s own posts. 第Ⅱ卷(非选择题 共35分)
第四部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,按照要求用英语回答问题。
My name is Brooke Parsons, and the story of my life is different. One day, in April, 1993, I was home alone when I had a stroke. When my parents came home, they took me to the hospital to learn what lay ahead for all of us. The stroke has left me with permanent brain damage. The doctors suggested I quit school. However, I chose the opposite.
After returning to high school, I learned very slowly. I had to decide whether or not to complete the twelfth grade in 2 years. Thinking I would fail if I chose to do it in one year, finally I made my decision. The staff at school were very supportive and helped me through the rough times. Finally, I graduated from high school. Graduating from high school was a huge achievement for me. That was an opportunity for me to be really proud of just how far I had come with all the odds I had to beat.
I can now walk, talk, dress myself, feed myself and be the independent person I am today. I have achieved my VCE and I am now at university, studying to be a social worker. I have been a scholarship winner. I have become a life-long member of the local musical band. All of these achievements are beyond my imagination. Now I am even in a novel called Second Chances by Neil Mitchall.
I could have easily listened to the doctors when I first had my stroke, but I decided I was going to prove them wrong as they did not know me, nor did they know just how determined I would be.
It’s a big world out there. I have done and achieved so much and never once will I allow the odds to get the better of me, as there is still a whole lot more things out there for me to do. I love life and I am living it to the maximum
56. How was the author affected by the stroke? (no more than 6 words)
57. What decision did he make after returning to school? (no more than 10 words)
58. What did the authors efforts bring him? (no more than 10 words)
59. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean? (no more than 10 words)
60. What do you think of the author and why? (no more than 20 words)
56. He suffered permanent brain damage.
57. To finish twelfth grade in two years.
58. He has achieved more than he could imagine.
59. I determine not to be defeated by difficulties.
60. He is brave and determined because he didn’t give up easily and overcame many difficulties brought by his brain damage.
根据原文第一段“The stroke has left me with permanent brain damage.” He suffered permanent brain damage.
根据原文第二段“I had to decide whether or not to complete the twelfth grade in 2 years. Thinking I would fail if I chose to do it in one year, finally I made my decision.” To finish twelfth grade in two years.
He has achieved more than he could imagine.
首次分析划线句子中的几个短语:never once意为“一次也不”;the odds结合上下文可知指代这场疾病给他带来的磕磕绊绊、艰难险阻(前文中有“all the odds I had to beat.” I determine not to be defeated by difficulties.
He is brave and determined because he didn’t give up easily and overcame many difficulties brought by his brain damage.

What Can We Do for the Environment in Our School
Hello, everyone.
Recently, I find that there are some problems in our school. For example, more and more students don't care about the environment so they throw plastic bags everywhere. It is convenient for them to put rubbish in the garbage bin. But they don't do as they should do. What's worse, they always trample on the lawn loosely and carelessly. We should create a healthy, harmonious, stimulating environment, so that the students in the good environment are influenced by the environment. On the other hand, we should help establish correct world outlook, outlook on life and values, so that everyone can volunteer to protect the environment.
I call on students to jointly protect the environment.
Thank you for your listening.

According to the joint UN report it is estimated that the yearly “economic burden from wildfire for the United States is between $7. 1 billion and $347.
46 The author quotes Reager’s words in the second paragraph to ______.

D. provide possible solutions to wildfires around the globe

48. Wildfires are so common and fiercely because ______.
A. global warming makes it easier to happen
B. water in the reservoirs is drying up
C. putting out wildfires costs too much
D. Economic development burnden is high
49. How has wildfire affected the American Northwest according to the text?
A Millions of people have been displaced.
