He practiced the piano from the age of three and began composing by the age of five. His father, who was also his teacher, was very strict with the boy. They had to work card and discover that they had a gift, and they didn't just make do with what they had. After that, they kept added Henry. He was told that he would never be a success at anything. No one wanted to hire him after he graduated from college, but he believed in himself, and he persevered with his studies on his own. Now i'm not trying to say that everyone can be a mode start or an einstein. They just put in a lot of time doing something. But with effort and passion, one can achieve a great deal. Without those things, you're not going to achieve much. That comes to those who prepare for IT. If you do something you love, don't let little bombs along the road stop you. Four Places Named After
Scientists in Antarctica
There are many scientific breakthroughs made by women in Antarctic. Here are four landmarks in Antarctica and the female pioneers they're named for.
Jones Terrace (梯田)
The ice-free terrace in eastern Antarctica's Victoria Land bears Jones' name. In 1969, geochemist Lois M. Jones led the first all-female research team from the US to work in Antarctica. Jones and her team studied chemical weathering in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, an ice-free area of Antarctica. Through chemical analyses of rocks they had collected, Jones and her team discovered many geochemical characteristics of the valley's ice-covered lakes.
Mount Fiennes
8,202-foot-high Mount Fiennes, located on Antarctica's largest island—Alexander Island—is named for Ginny Fiennes. She established and maintained 80-foot-tall radio towers in the Antarctic. In 1985, Fiennes became the first female who was invited to join the Antarctic Club, a British supper club open to individuals who have spent extended time in the Antarctic region.
Francis Peak
The 3,727-foot-tall peak on Antarctica's Adelaide Island is named after Dame Jane Francis, who is the first female director of the British Antarctic Survey, the national polar research institute of the UK. Her collection of fossils on Seymour Island helped conclude in a 2021 paper that Antarctica's abundant plant fossils indicate the continent once had a much warmer climate than it currently does.
Peden Cliffs
Peden Cliffs near Antarctica's Marie Byrd Land are proof of the labor of Irene Peden. She was the first American female scientist to both live and work in the Antarctic, where she used radio waves to study ice sheets. Peden and her team determined how very low frequency radio waves spread over long polar distances by measuring pathways in the ice. They also used varying radio wave frequencies to measure the thickness of Antarctica's ice sheets.

Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.
My earliest memories of my father are of a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and his family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him; as a schoolgirl and young adult (成年人) I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A's and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard.
On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father's friends for lunch at an outdoor café. We talked away that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son's funny facial expressions. Gone were my father's critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before?
The next day dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our moments together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I'm at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I'm delighted with my__new__friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.

C.tired D.safe
答案:A

One of the best personal growth keys we should go after is proper selfawareness. Generally, selfawareness is a real understanding of yourself. Your personal habits, strengths, areas in which you need improvement, etc. The more you know about yourself, the better you fit in with the environment, and the more healthily you grow. Without it, you are tricking yourself into living your life through unclear feelings instead of reality.
So, how do you become selfaware? One of the best ways is to invite honest advice into your life. I grew up in a generation in which everyone got a medal as long as they participate in. Take a race for example, everyone is a “winner”, even if you are the last one. Although I need encouragement, false feedback only masks blind spots in a person's character. Worse yet, a “everyone gets a trophy” culture through the ages supports mediocrity (平庸). Of course, no one likes hard words, but I'd like to suggest embracing honest feedback and developing real selfawareness.
Imagine you are texting while driving, and you take your focus from the road to your phone. Just seconds later, your eyes go back to the road and you realize that you're dangerously driving onto the opposite lane. Our selfawareness can tell us “Yes, I was texting while driving”. But that acknowledgement (承认) alone doesn't lead to change and growth beyond the harmful behavior. However, applied selfknowledge does, which is one key ingredient of selfawareness. And applied selfknowledge begs the answer to the question “Why was I texting while driving in the first place?” If we can form answers to the motivations behind our thoughts and actions, and then make a plan to change our behavior, we'll be better experiencing lasting growth.
We can get all the selfhelp guides and personal growth methods money can buy, but if we don't know ourselves well enough to put any of them into effective and specific practice, we'll never arrive at the greatest place of success possible in our lives.
篇章导读:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了培养正确的自我认识给我们带来的影响和意义。
28.What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?
A.People often cheat themselves.
B.Proper selfawareness increases confidence.
C.Proper selfawareness is beneficial to growth.
D.People can keep healthy selfawareness by practice.
答案:C
解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中的“The more you know ... and the more healthily you grow.”可知,正确的自我认识对我们的成长有益。故选C。
29.What can we learn about the “everyone gets a trophy” culture?
A.It focuses on character development.
B.It stresses positive judgment.
C.It uncovers blind spots.
D.It calls for equality.
答案:B
解析:推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Although I need ... person's character.”和“a ‘everyone gets a trophy’ culture through the ages supports mediocrity (平庸)”可推知,这种文化会给予人积极的评价。故选B。
30.What is the author's purpose in using the example in Paragraph 3?
A.To warn the danger of texting while driving.
B.To provide ways to change your driving behavior.
C.To introduce the concept of applied selfknowledge.

In the late 1960s, the anthropologist (人类学家) Edmund Carpenter arrived in New Cuinea armed with mirrors, videos and Polaroid cameras, and a mission: to disrupt (扰乱) the minds of members of the Biami tribe, who had never seen full reflections or images of themselves. “After their first astonished response—covering their mouths and ducking their heads—they stood frozen, staring at their images.” Carpenter's devices disturbed that inner image, causing discomfort. But not for long. Within days, the villagers groomed (打扮) themselves openly before mirrors and began taking Polaroid shots of each other.
It's unclear if the People of Biami were really as unfamiliar with mirrors as Carpenter thought. But in any case, what's striking isn't how strange their reaction seems, but how related. Do you know how it feels when you make a pleasant remark in a lift, but nobody responds? Or when two people greeting each other misjudge whether to go for a handshake, a hug or a social kiss? That's the same awkwardness: “self-consciousness tinged with uncertainty”, as Dahl defines it. Suddenly, I see I'm viewed not as a friendly conversationalist, but as a strange person who talks in the lift.
As awkwardness feels unpleasant, it's natural to want to overcome it. Dahl's initial motivation for writing her book Cringeworthy: A Theory of Awkwardness, was to get over her own awkwardness. But after a journey through various awkward experiences, she makes a persuasive case for celebrating it. We live in an era with more opportunities than ever to do so. But awkwardness breaks that false appearance, exposing the imperfect life behind it. It creates a strange kind of social bond—how much in common we have when seeing that behind the disguise (伪装)—we're all just trying our best to seem perfect.
The awkward you, then, is the real you, the one without the defensive performance. Dahl even indicates that taking a friendlier attitude toward awkwardness might help us make the connections with people holding different ideas.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my knight in shining armor.”
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right.” The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?”
The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn't have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus?
Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

[精彩范文]
Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. Then he picked it up and tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket.” The man turned around and saw the money. He knew what was going on, he looked straight into my dad's eyes, took my dad's hand in both of his, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lip shaking and a tear running down his cheek, he replied, “Thank you. Thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
That day my father and I went back to our car and drove home without any tickets. We didn't go to the circus that night, when I asked dad why he did so, Dad said, “My child, it was a desperate, heartbreaking and embarrassing situation for a father. Surely he wasn't begging for a handout, but he reminded me of my father, when I was young.” He paused for a while, as if wandering in his memory. “We should appreciate what we have obtained from life and seize every opportunity to help others. We didn't go to the circus tonight, but we both felt a joy inside us that was far greater than seeing the circus could ever provide.”
