He was 68. His death was confirmed on Friday in a statement by his manga and design production company, Bird Studio, and Capsule Corporation Tokyo. The statement said the cause was acute subdural hematoma, a condition in which blood collects between the skull and brain. It did not say where Mr Toriyama died. Mr Toriyama's body of work, which also includes “Dr Slump” and “Sand Land,” is recognizable far beyond Japan's borders, having influenced generations of manga artists and cartoonists. The studio said he had several projects in the works at his death. His bestknown work, “Dragon Ball,” follows a young boy named Son Goku who embarks on a journey to collect the seven magical balls that summon (召唤) a wishgranting dragon. Since its creation in the 1980s, it has spanned 42 volumes, sold millions of copies worldwide and become one of the most famous manga, inspiring television, film and video game adaptations. Throughout his career, Mr Toriyama said in a 2013 interview with the Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun, he did not care if his work did anything besides entertaining its readers. He was, he said, unlike “other manga artists concerned about conveying didactic (说教的) messages.” “The role of my manga,” he said, “is to be a pure work of entertainment.” “Thanks to the support of so many people around the world, he has been able to continue his creative activities for over 45 years,” his studio's statement said. “We hope that Akira Toriyama's unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come.” 篇章导读:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章报道了日本知名漫画家鸟山明于2024年3月1日去世的消息,并介绍了他的作品及其在漫画领域的影响。 1.What information can be found in the text about Akira Toriyama? He couldn't figure out what the use of learning to swim was. But Harry's parents believed it was a great pity for a healthy boy to be afraid of the wind and the sea. “Everybody, especially every Englishman and boy, should know how to swim,” Papa had said. “There is never any knowing the use it may be of.” “Isn't it very hard to learn?” Harry asked. “It takes some patience,” his father said. “But in three weeks or so, you should be able to swim fairly well, if you have a lesson every day.” There was no escaping it, however. Papa, though very kind, was very firm, and once he said a thing, it had to be done. So with a rather white face, poor Harry set off every day for his swimming lesson. He was a quick and clever boy, and a strong boy, and his father knew this. After the initial fear was overcome, it went on better and faster than could have been expected. Two weeks later, Harry had the pleasure of hearing his father say to his mother, “He swims already very nearly as well as I do myself.” Seacliff, the place at which the family was spending the summer, was not a fashionable watering place but a little village. There were a few gentlemen's houses in the neighborhood, so that in fine weather merry groups met at the little sheltered bay among the rocks. One day, Harry, having finished his own morning swim, set off to walk home at his ease. Suddenly a sound disturbed his pleasant thoughts. A carriage (马车) was rushing wildly along, coming nearer and nearer. The driver, Ann, stood upright in the carriage, hitting the poor horse as if she were mad, while from time to time she screamed, “Help, help!” “What is it?” screamed Harry too, as Ann passed. She would not stop, but she threw back some words through the wind. “My sister—Alice—is drowning. Go to the village to fetch someone who can swim.” Harry ran back to the bathing place at once. He had scarcely reached the place when he spotted a girl struggling in the water. The situation was so dangerous and urgent that there was no time to waste. Although Harry was nervous and anxious, he set his teeth and dived into the water with fierce determination. With attentive strokes, he quickly approached the girl and reached out to grab her arm. Knowing the importance of haste, Harry used all his strength to pull her through the water, focusing solely on her rescue. There were plenty of hands to help carry them to land once they were within a safe distance; however, it was Harry who was the true hero. Thunderous applause erupted, acknowledging Harry's bravery and selflessness. A sense of pride surged within Harry as he realized that without his prior swimming experience and the confidence it had instilled in him, he might not have been able to save the girl, which was the ultimate reward. From that moment on, Harry never questioned the value of swimming skills and continued to improve them, cherishing the preciousness of life. 1.initial/I'nIʃ(ə)l/adj. 开始的,最初的 2.drown/draʊn/v. 淹死;溺水 3.figure out 弄明白;想出 4.at one's ease 舒适;自由自在;无拘无束 A sense of pride surged within Harry as he realized that without his prior swimming experience and the confidence it had instilled in him, he might not have been able to save the girl, which was the ultimate reward. 本句主干是A sense of pride surged,为“主谓”结构。as引导原因状语从句,that引导宾语从句,it had instilled in him是定语从句,修饰the confidence, which引导非限制性定语从句。
