The sound of my mother preparing breakfast fills the house — my morning alarm.
As I walk toward the kitchen I’m greeted by my mother standing over the cooker. She effortlessly cooks a dish that mixes Western and Eastern styles, a beloved breakfast classic in our family. This is my grandmother’s recipe(食谱).
Since my grandmother’s passing, I’ve become more aware of my mother’s aging and her devotion to cooking for us. She has cooked for her family for more than 30 years, dividing her time between three countries — Korea, Canada and Germany. When my parents visit us from Korea, they stay with us for several months. My mother helps around the house, showing her cooking skills to provide delicious meals for me, my partner and our kids. In every other year, she and my dad will travel to Berlin to spend a couple of weeks with my sister and her partner.
According to Statista, most Canadians report spending between 31 and 60 minutes preparing an average weekday dinner for themselves and others in their houses. Ten percent stated that they spend more than an hour preparing their evening meal. My mother belongs to that 10 percent.
Her cooking goes beyond the kitchen, starting with careful grocery shopping trips where she examines produce and finds the best deals. She takes everyone’s preferences and needs into account. The meal she creates becomes a ritual (仪式), bringing the family together to connect and share. Helping her out in the kitchen requires a great deal of patience. Yet, I know it’s her way of expressing love. As I prepare the vegetables, she notices that my carrots are not evenly sized. She pushes me aside to take over the task. “Just do the dishes.”
4. What do we know about the author’s mother from paragraph 2?
A. She has more than two children.
B. She lives with the author in Korea.
C. She has great cooking skills.
D. She invented the family beloved breakfast classic.
5. What’s the purpose of listing data about meal preparation time?
A. To present a common problem.
B. To show her mother’s love.
C. To stress the importance of home-cooked meals.
D. To explain the reasons behind infrequent cooking.
6. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
A. Her mother dislikes being bothered.
B. Her mother expects perfection in cooking.
C. Her mother gets angry easily.
D. Her mother wants to teach her everything.
7. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Mother’s Recipe Is the Best in the World.
B. Mother’s Love Needs to Be Responded to.
C. Mother’s Selflessness Inspires My Family.
D. Mother’s Kitchen draws Us Closer Together.
C
One of the top sources of added sugar in children’s diets in America is in their breakfast cereal (麦片). A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows that advertising drives sales of high-sugar cereals when it’s aimed directly at kids under 12 — but not when it targets adults.
In the study, researchers looked at all cereals purchased by 77,000 U.S. households over a nine-year period, between 2008 and 2017. They also looked at Nielsen ratings data, which closely monitored all the ads that people in a household saw — both children and adults. What they found was a strong relationship between how much advertising was targeted to kids and how much sugary cereal that households with children bought. By contrast, there was no link to increased purchases when ads targeted adults. And these extensive data also showed that behaviors that were learned in childhood could track into adulthood, which could lead to poor health outcomes over a lifetime.
The study is the first to directly compare the influence of food advertising exposure by children with that of adults. The findings offer novel evidence of how food marketing turns children into the “ultimate weapon” in influencing family spending because they consistently ask their parents to purchase a concept known as “pester power”.
The food industry launched the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, a voluntary effort to police itself. The 21 participating food companies made a commitment to cut back on marketing unhealthy foods to children under 12 — later revised to under 13. A new study conducted in 2024 showed that children’s exposure to cereal ads on TV programming aimed at kids has dropped dramatically.
But Lindsay Smith Taillie, a food policy researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, says these voluntary efforts aren’t making a difference. Advertisements, like kids’ eyeballs, are moving online, making it even harder to know what marketing children are being exposed to, Taillie notes.
8. What mainly drives children’s sugary cereal purchases?
A. Family breakfast traditions.
B. Nutritional value promotion.
C. Kid-focused marketing strategies.
D. Adult-targeted advertisements.
9. What does the underlined phrase “pester power” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Parents’ unconditional love.
B. Children’s uncontrolled spending.
C. Parents’ growing consumption.
D. Children’s repeated purchase requests.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. An expectation for further study.
B. The follow-up influence of the study.
C. A limitation of the research method.
D. The potential application of the findings.
11. What is Taillie’s attitude toward the voluntary efforts?
A. Favorable. B. Unconcerned. C. Disapproving. D. Mixed.

After the Second World War, Europe’s rapid economic growth led to a more open and fair society, with fewer class barriers (阶级壁垒) and less obvious class differences.
Changes in the structure (结构) of the middle class were particularly influential. In the1800s and early 1900s, the middle class was made up of business owners or professionals like lawyers and doctors. Ownership of property (财产) and strong family ties had often been the keys to wealth and standing within the middle class. But after 1945, things changed in Western Europe. A new breed of managers and experts serving the needs of big organizations took the place of traditional property owners as the leaders of the middle class. At the same time, the middle class grew massively and became harder to define.
There were several reasons for these developments. The growth of industry and technology required more managers and technologists. Moreover, the old middle class lost control of family businesses, and many small businesses closed as their former owners became salaried workers. Top managers and ranking civil servants, often trained in engineering or accounting, formed a new middle class of specialists from various social backgrounds. Thus the new middle class, which was based largely on specialized skills and high levels of education, was more open, democratic, and less secure than the old middle class.
The rising standard of living and the spread of standardized consumer goods also worked to level European society as the percent of income spent on food and drink declined substantially and people began to purchase a wider range of goods beyond just food and drinks. For example, the European car industry experienced significant growth after lagging far behind the United States since the 1920s. In 1948 there were only 5 million cars in Western Europe, but in 1965 there were 44 million. Like Americans, Europeans bought household goods like washing machines and TVs using credit, which was made easier by installment purchasing. This, along with better social security, made them more willing to take on debt.
12. What mainly decided middle-class membership in the 1800s and early 1900s?
A. Strong family connections.
B. Expertise in managing property.
C. Working in a large organizations.
D. Support from the medical community.
13. What do we know about the new middle-class members?
A. They are more open-minded.
B. They grow up in wealthy families.
C. They work in family-owned businesses.
D. They share the same social background.
14. Why does the author mention the rise in car numbers from 1948 to 1965?
A. To express his preference for cars made in Europe.
B. To state the economic and social changes after WWⅡ.
C. To compare Europe’s progress in economy with the U. S.
D. To show his pride in the rise of car sales in Western Europe.
15. What’s the text mainly about?
A. Suggestions for buying goods on credit.
B. The author’s views on European society.
C. The rapid development of European society.
D. Changes in European society after the war.

Forgive (原谅) where you can — and seek forgiveness when you make a mess of something. No one promises to bring perfection to a relationship, so being willing to accept and forgive the weaknesses of others makes you more likely to build a lasting friendship. ____19____
Respect your friends and their boundaries. Everyone has a right to set up personal boundaries to feel safe and respected. Some friends may have a difficult time letting people get close to them for fear of being hurt. ____20____ Give them the space they need to feel comfortable, and let the relationship deepen over time.

As a single mother, I’ve never doubted my daughter Jane’s dream to be a singer on the stage. At an early age, she was crazy about singing. Whenever she had a chance, she would sing to her heart’s content. Her sweet and charming voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs.
Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs, determined to do everything in my power to support her. Soon after Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to sing. Jane practiced so hard that before long she made great progress in singing.
Unfortunately, one noon a year later, Jane was crossing the street when a careless driver knocked her down. She was rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my daughter would probably not stand on her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy, I was about to fall to the ground when someone took hold of me.
It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace, Jane needs you. You must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the ward with Mary.
That night, Jane recovered her consciousness (知觉) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand, I said, “My dear, everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong girl, Jane. Don’t worry. We’ll be standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Jane’s cheeks.
After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her. Jane eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair. Never did she refer to the subject of singing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
One day, however, Mary came with good news.

The sound of my mother preparing breakfast fills the house — my morning alarm.
As I walk toward the kitchen, I’m greeted by my mother standing over the cooker.

A. To present a common problem.
B. To show her mother’s love.

根据文章第二段“She effortlessly cooks a dish that mixes Western and Eastern styles, a beloved breakfast classic in our family. This is my grandmother’s recipe(食谱).( 她轻而易举地烹制出一道融合了西方与东方风格的菜肴,这道美食在我们家成了备受喜爱的早餐佳品。这是我祖母的食谱。)”可知,作者的母亲能够轻松地烹饪出融合了东西方风格的菜肴,展示了她的烹饪技能。选项C“She has great cooking skills.(她有很棒的烹饪技能)”符合题意。
根据文章第四段“According to Statista, most Canadians report spending between 31 and 60 minutes preparing an average weekday dinner for themselves and others in their houses. Ten percent stated that they spend more than an hour preparing their evening meal. My mother belongs to that 10 percent.(根据Statista的数据,大多数加拿大人表示,他们平日里为自己和家中其他人准备晚餐需要花费31到60分钟。有10%的人表示,他们准备晚餐要花一个多小时。我母亲就属于这10%的人群。)”可知,这里列出关于准备餐食时间的数据,是为了突出作者的母亲在准备餐食上花费的时间远超过平均水平,属于那10%花费超过一小时准备晚餐的人。结合后文对母亲烹饪的描述,可以推断出列出这些数据的目的是为了展示母亲对家人的爱和投入。故选B项。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章最后一段“As I prepare the vegetables, she notices that my carrots are not evenly sized. She pushes me aside to take over the task. ‘Just do the dishes.’(当我准备蔬菜时,她注意到我的胡萝卜大小不一。她把我推开,自己接手了这项工作。“就去洗碗吧。”)”可知,当作者准备蔬菜时,母亲注意到作者的胡萝卜大小不一,于是她把作者推到一边,自己接手了这项任务,并让作者去洗碗。这个行为表明母亲对烹饪的细节有很高的要求,期望达到完美的效果。故划线句“Helping her out in the kitchen requires a great deal of patience. (在厨房里帮助她做事需要极大的耐心。)”与后文表述的意思一致,强调“母亲对烹饪的细节有很高的要求,期望达到完美的效果。”故选B项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“The meal she creates becomes a ritual (仪式), bringing the family together to connect and share.( 她精心准备的这顿饭逐渐成为了一种仪式,让全家人聚在一起,增进感情并分享彼此的快乐。)”

One of the top sources of added sugar in children’s diets in America is in their breakfast cereal (麦片). A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows that advertising drives sales of high-sugar cereals when it’s aimed directly at kids under 12 — but not when it targets adults.
In the study researchers looked at all cereals purchased by 77,000 U.S. households over a nine-year period, between 2008 and 2017.
D. Mixed.
C 9. D 10. B 11. C

根据第三段中的“The findings offer novel evidence of how food marketing turns children into the “ultimate weapon” in influencing family spending because they consistently ask their parents to purchase a concept known as “pester power”.(这些发现提供了新的证据,表明食品营销如何将儿童变成影响家庭消费的“终极武器”,因为他们会不断要求父母购买,这一概念被称为“pester power”。)”
根据第四段中的“The food industry launched the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, a voluntary effort to police itself.
The rising standard of living and the spread of standardized consumer goods also worked to level European society, as the percent of income spent on food and drink declined substantially and people began to purchase a wider range of goods beyond just food and drinks.
13 What do we know about the new middle-class members?
A. They are more open-minded.
B. They grow up in wealthy families.
C. They work in family-owned businesses.
D. They share the same social background.
14 Why does the author mention the rise in car numbers from 1948 to 1965?

In 1948 there were only 5 million cars in Western Europe, but in 1965 there were 44 million.

Studies continue to show how important strong friendships are to our overall health. Here’re the rules you are supposed to know to keep strong and healthy friendships.
____16____ Everyone needs a support network. When you consider yourself the friend of another, you’re implicitly offering to be a part of his or her support network. What’s more, without trust and honesty, there is no authenticity (真实性) to the friendship.
Be all ears to your friends. Too often, we only “half hear” what others are telling us, and have a hard time making space for caring about others’ conditions. ____17____ If we don’t truly know what our friends need or can’t clearly express how we feel or what we need, friendships won’t survive or continue.
Throw away the judgment. ____18____ Good friends are able to realize that everyone is human. Friends don’t have to necessarily “like” or “approve” of their friends’ choices, but good friends will accept their friends’ choices no matter what.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
One day, however, Mary came with good news.

When the host announced it was Jane’s turn, she was wheeled onto the stage.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One day, however, Mary came with good news. She told Jane the school music festival was to be held the next month and that her classmates all expected her to sing on behalf of her class. Jane’s eyes sparkled but responded doubtfully, “Can I...?” Mary and I immediately assured her that she could make it. In the following month, with the help of Mary, Jane kept on practicing singing. Beautiful songs echoed in our house again and smiles began to appear on her face. Finally the big day came when she could present herself.
When the host announced it was Jane’s turn, she was wheeled onto the stage. Jane was greeted with warm applause. As she began to sing, the audience got absorbed in her beautiful voice. Seconds after her performance, all the audience rose with thunderous cheers. When wheeled off stage, Jane received praise and bunches of flowers from her teachers and classmates. Jane was moved to tears. The kindness and encouragement from her teachers and classmates stimulated Jane’s enthusiasm for life, making her regain confidence in pursuing her original dream, which I will support wholeheartedly.
