Paris, the capital of France, has some attractive bridges. These are four of the most beautiful bridges in Paris: some in iconic (标志性的) places you’ve seen in the movies, and others in quiet places that you’ll delight in discovering.
Pont des Arts
Connecting the Louvre Museum to the Institut de France, the Pont des Arts, first built by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1804 and reconstructed in the 1970s, is a bridge only for people walking that is beloved by tourists and locals alike. Pont Marle
This lovely but little-known bridge is a gateway between the Marais district on the right bank and a natural island on the Seine River. The current stone structure dates to around 1670, following a fire on its wooden structure that destroyed much of the original bridge and the houses that once stood on it. It has remained much the same since the 18th century, making it one of Paris’ oldest bridges.

Pont Neuf
First built in 1578 by King Henry Ⅲ, Pont Neuf has seen numerous reconstructions and changes over the centuries. But it conserves its Roman-inspired arch (拱形) structures. While many of us will be taking advantage of the holiday for a bit of rest and relaxation, one man will be in training to push his body to its limits. Ian Russell, an airline pilot from Hereford, is preparing to run his first Ironman Triathlon (铁人三项赛) — at the age of 60.
“They used to say life begins at 40. Now, 60 is the new 40,” said Mr Russell. Mr Russell was a keen sportsman when he was young, he listed climbing Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn among his achievements. He later took up running, before joining his local triathlon club. Inspired by some of his fellow members who had taken part, last autumn Mr Russell, who was 60 years old, signed up for the Ironman Triathlon event in Tenby, Pembrokeshire. He didn’t want age to restrict himself.
“I originally thought that it’s local and easy to go, but it’s actually one of the toughest ones going,” he said. Since then, Mr Russell has trained “most days” — but has suffered a couple of setbacks. “I’ve had a big operation on my hand,” he explained, “which took a few weeks to recover. And then I broke my foot out training with the triathlon club. That took a good six to eight weeks to recover. So I’m not starting from the best base.”
He said that, while he was training hard, he was avoiding pushing himself too much. “You might end up hurting yourself, which I can’t afford now,” he said. Mr Russell was also worried about making a cutoff, of two hours 20 minutes, to complete the swim. “All my main part of my training in my mind is revolving (围绕) around getting through the swimming part. So at least I can get on a bike and… let Mother Nature and tailwinds (顺风) take their course.”
Despite this, the athlete said he had no regrets. “I’m proving that age is no barrier to setting bold goals and achieving them,” he added.
4. Why did Mr Russell say “60 is the new 40”?
A. He was starting a new career. B. He felt younger than before.
C. He wanted to sound humorous. D. He believed age shouldn’t limit his goals.
5. What can be learned from Mr Russell’s training experience?
A. His coach caused his injuries. B. He trained too little for the event.
C. He underestimated the difficulty of the race. D. He prioritized swimming over biking too early.
6. What does the underlined word “cutoff” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. A time limit. B. A competition rule.
C. A safety zone. D. A broken record.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Mr Russell?
A. Well-trained but proud. B. Determined and careful.
C. Competitive and generous. D. Humorous but narrow-minded.
C
Our planet faces severe environmental threats, mainly due to human activities such as large farming and burning fossil fuels, which lead to climate change and natural disasters.
One of the most destructive activities we are carrying out is cutting down forests – deforestation. This is done for many reasons, such as providing wood for fuel, making land available for housing or for creating space for more farm animals. This has been most noticeable in Brazil, which is home to the world’s largest rainforest. Deforestation there has hit its highest rate in a decade, according to official data. Over the course of a year, an area about five times the size of London has been destroyed.
Although deforestation rates in the Amazon and other tropical(热带的) regions have declined, the scale remains vast. In 2018, Global Forest Watch reported that 30 football fields’ worth of forest were cut down every minute. Frances Seymour from the World Resources Institute warns that the overall trend is still upward, indicating we are far from winning the battle against deforestation. Primary forests like the Amazon are crucial for biodiversity, housing rare species and acting as carbon dioxide stores. The loss of 3.6 million hectares in 2018 is alarming.
Brazil has taken policies to reduce deforestation, including fines for illegal land use and logging(采伐). International actions against soy and beef trade from deforested Amazon areas have also helped. However, other regions like Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo are witnessing increases in deforestation. It appears that only political will and human conscience(良知) can effectively solve this problem and protect our planet.
8. What is the main cause of environmental threats according to the passage?
A. Natural disasters. B. Deforestation.
C. Climate change. D. Human activities.
9. What is the significance of primary forests like the Amazon?
A. They provide fuel wood. B. They are used for farm animals.
C. They are home to unique species. D. They are involved in international trade.
10. What measures have been taken to decrease deforestation in Brazil?
A. Ignoring land use requirements. B. Encouraging more farm animals.
C. Introducing government policies. D. Increasing the rate of deforestation.
11. What is the purpose of writing this text?
A. To introduce deforestation. B. To call for action against deforestation.
C. To suggest a way to protect the planet. D. To argue the cause of environmental threats.
D
Research shows hearing loss, if left untreated, can increase the risk of falls and social loneliness. One study from scientists at Johns Hopkins University found that even people with mild hearing loss doubled their risk of dementia (痴呆症). Now a new study finds that restoring (恢复) hearing with hearing aids may lengthen people’s lives.
Using the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a national study, Dr. Janet Choi, a scientist with Keck Medicine of USC, and her workmates tracked the situation of nearly 1,900 adults with hearing loss. The adults completed a list of questions about their use of hearing aids.
“The group of patients who were using hearing aids regularly had a 24% lower risk of death than the group who never use hearing aids” Choi says. It means the adults who were in the habit of wearing hearing aids were less likely to die early.
But this new study can’t prove that it’s the hearing aids that lead to longer life. It could be that people who regularly use hearing aids are also more likely to avoid being lonely, remain more active or have reduced risk of falls, which could explain the increased longevity (寿命).
Given the benefits, Choi says it’s shocking how few people with hearing loss wear hearing aids regularly - just 12%, according to her study. And she says another striking finding is that the people in the study who had hearing aids but didn’t use them regularly were as likely to die early as those who never used them.
Choi was born with hearing loss in one ear. For years she says she refused the idea of wearing hearing aids, given that her hearing was good in the other ear. But when she became a doctor, she realized she was missing out. Now she uses hearing aids regularly. “There were many sounds I was missing,” she says. Now, her hearing has greatly improved. “I’m happy I got hearing aids,” she says.
So, if you have hearing aids sitting in the back of a drawer, not being used, Choi says, try them again.
12. How did the researchers get the results?
A By interviewing a lot of patients. B. By referring to another related study.
C. By performing some experiments. D. By examining harms of hearing loss.
13. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A. The method to live a longer life. B. The purpose of the study.
C. The necessity of wearing hearing aids. D. The reason for hearing aids to lengthen life.
14. What shocks Dr. Janet Choi?
A. Few patients restore hearing.
B. Some patients fail to get hearing aids.
C. Most patients often misuse hearing aids.
D. Many patients refuse to use hearing aids often.
15. What does the author aim to do by sharing Dr. Janet Choi’s personal experience?
A. To show the benefits hearing aids can offer.
B. To encourage patients to follow doctors’ advice.
C. To stress Choi’s difficulty in wearing hearing aids.
D. To explain the reason why Choi refused hearing aids.

Jackson’s family hired a driver. The driver’s family came to stay with them in a small house in their backyard. That’s how Jackson met the driver’s eight-year-old son Tom. From the day he met Jackson, Tom became his fan. For Tom, 11-year-old Jackson seemed to be a big boy. He would always follow Jackson around.
Tom didn’t go to school. He was admitted to a local government school, but he refused to go. He told Jackson shyly that the teachers only made them copy words from the blackboard. Since he hadn’t learned how to read, he could not understand anything that was written on the blackboard. Jackson felt sorry for him. On Sunday, Jackson saw Tom sitting under a tree holding an alphabet (字母表) book in his hands. Jackson walked quietly towards him and discovered that Tom was holding the book upside down.
Jackson took the book out of Tom’s hands and turned the right side up. “This is how you should read,” he told Tom. Two big tears rolled down Tom’s cheeks. Tom told Jackson, “I want to be like you, but I can’t do anything.” That evening, Jackson told his parents they had to help Tom get into a better school. It was not easy to make Tom admitted to a new school, because the time for admission was over.
Luckily, one principal (校长) looked at Tom kindly and admitted him to her school. The next day Tom went to his new school wearing a new shirt. But when Tom returned from school, he was a bit sad. The other children in his class had laughed at him. He told Jackson, “They all said I am much older than them but in a smaller class. I don’t want to go to school.”

Despite this the athlete said he had no regrets.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. B

【答案】8. D 9. C 10. C 11. B

“The group of patients who were using hearing aids regularly had a 24% lower risk of death than the group who never use hearing aids,” Choi says.
A. By interviewing a lot of patients.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. A

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语段续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文,续写的词数应为150词左右。
Luckily one principal (校长) looked at Tom kindly and admitted him to her school. The next day Tom went to his new school wearing a new shirt. But when Tom returned from school, he was a bit sad. The other children in his class had laughed at him. He told Jackson, “They all said I am much older than them but in a smaller class. I don’t want to go to school.”

【答案】
Jackson said, “Don’t worry, Tom, I will teach you to read.” “Can I be the same as you?” Tom asked with hope. “Sure, if you want to.” answered Jackson. Then the two made a reading plan together. On the day both of them went to school, while on the night they spent at least two hours reading the alphabet book. With Jackson’s help, Tom began to understand the thing that was wrotten on the blackboard slowly.
Two months later, Tom returned from school with a bright smile. He rushed into the house and can’t wait to tell Jackson a good news that he was praised by the teacher, who said he made such a great progress in a short time. And all the class were astonished at his improvements. “Thank you,you do make a difference to me.”said to Jackson.“No, it is you who you should say thanks. Always remember, anyone can make a difference, just don’t give up!”
