The World’s “Greenest School”
This is my daughter’s new school in Bali. There is dancing, clapping and lots of smiling in it. Unlike most schools around the world, here the lessons are all about saving the Earth. The children do much of their learning outdoors.
The Green school was set up by John Hardy and his wife, Cynthia. John once explained to me that he believes we can all live greener.“ People worldwide are learning how to be green, but in unfriendly environments,” he said. “Green School kids are learning the same things, but they are also living it”.
The school uses compostable (可堆肥的) toilets. Electricity comes from solar panels Cooking is done with ingredients (原料) from the school and nearby farms. The school bus runs on used cooking oil. Students between the ages of three and twelve mainly learn math and reading. The school also helps them develop environmental awareness (意识) and problem-solving abilities through different tasks. At the end of the day, there is no homework for my daughter. There are only materials for after-school outdoor activities.

Do you know how the microwave oven was invented? In the 1940s, Percy Spencer worked at a company called Raytheon. They were making machines for World War II. One day, when testing a new machine part called a magnetron (磁控管), Percy noticed something strange. A chocolate bar in his pocket had melted (融化)! Percy wanted to know why it had melted.
Percy decided to do some research. He put a glass of water near the magnetron, and it boiled really fast! Then, he tried heating an egg, which exploded (爆炸). Percy realized that the microwaves from the magnetron could cook food quickly.
Percy and his team started working on a new kind of oven that used microwaves to cook food. In 1945, they made the first microwave oven, called the “Radarange.” This first microwave was bulky, about five feet tall and weighing over 700 pounds. It was mainly used in restaurants and on ships because it was too expensive for home use.
Over the next few years, engineers worked to make microwave ovens smaller, cheaper, and safer to use at home. By the 1970s, many families had microwave ovens in their kitchens. They loved how fast and easy it was to cook food with them. Microwave ovens could make food in minutes, which was much quicker than traditional ovens.

A new AI system can be used to make predictions on crop yields (产量) up to six months before harvest (收获). The tool counts flowers on fruit trees, which can help farmers improve crop yields and make better use of their resources such as water and labor, and to plan harvests.
The system, developed by researchers at the National Robotarium in Edinburgh, can calculate the number of flowers on fruit trees from photos taken by a smart phone. It works by recognizing (识别) patterns and features, such as the edges and shapes of flowers. In Spain, studies on peach trees showed the system to be 90% correct in flower counts, which is much better than the 30% to 50% mistakes made by humans, according to researchers.
“In countries all across the world, farmers often depend on traditional methods to predict their yields, which can lead to big mistakes,” said Fernando Auat Cheein, a professor at the National Robotarium. He also praised the simplicity and correctness of the flower-counting AI and its possibility to help farmers make wise decisions about crop management.
“By focusing their efforts on areas of the farm that are expected to produce the most fruit, farmers can make the most of resources, reduce their environmental effect, and improve both the quantity and quality of their harvest,” said Mr. Cheein. “Our AI tool can be combined with traditional farming practices, making it easier for growers to get help with creative solutions without completely changing their present methods.”
The researchers will next compare the AI’s predictions with the actual peach harvest in the autumn of 2024. If these turn out to be effective (有效的), they believe the method could be used for crops such as apples, pears, and cherries, helping fruit growers in Britain, Europe, and other areas.
36.What is the purpose of new AI tool?
A.To harvest crops. B.To water fruit trees.
C.To predict crop yields. D.To speed up the crop growth.
37.How can the AI system calculate the number of the flowers from photos?
A.It can take photos by a smart phone.
B.It recognizes many types of flowers.
C.It works by recognizing patterns and features.
D.It can depend on traditional methods to calculate the number of flowers.
38.What words best describe the AI system according to Paragraph 3?
A.Helpful and promising B.Creative and expensive.
C.Practical and interesting. D.Convenient and eco-friendly.
39.Why does the author mention Mr. Cheein’s words in Paragraph 4?
A.To offer suggestions on using the AI system.
B.To show the help farmers can get from AI system.
C.To explain the need for improving the quality of crops.
D.To compare traditional farming methods with the new AI system.
40.What is the researchers’ next step?

Jimmy was overweight and loved ice cream. It was his favourite dessert (甜点). He 51 (allow) to have an ice cream each evening after dinner if he ate up his vegetables. He would like 52 (eat) ice cream at home because he didn’t like to walk to the ice cream stand (货摊).
His mum was worried about his health. That night at supper, Jimmy ate up all his vegetables, but there 53 no ice cream. “I have already finished my vegetables,” he said. However, Mum came up 54 a new rule. “If you want to eat ice cream, you’ll have to get it by walking to the ice cream stand,” she said. Jimmy had no 55 (choose) but to agree, so they decided to take a walk on Saturday. According to the map, the ice cream stand was a mile away.
It was a sunny day. The sun was so bright that Jimmy could hardly open his eyes. He asked, “How much farther is it?” Mum checked the map on her phone and then said, “We’re not even halfway yet. Do you want to turn around?” Jimmy did want to turn around, 56 he also wanted ice cream. Walking was the only way to get it.
After a few minutes, Jimmy felt tired and had difficulty 57 (walk) on. He wanted to sit down, but there were no chairs. He wanted to give up. He looked up to tell Mum he was ready to turn around. But when he did, he could see the violet flag at the top of the ice cream stand. They were almost there! Jimmy started to walk much 58 (fast). He finally could taste the cool, creamy ice cream. It was a long walk, but it was 59 (certain) worth the effort. “I have a sense of 60 (achieve),” Jimmy said excitedly.

故填was allowed。

come up with“提出”,固定短语,因此此处应用介词“with”。故填with。
此空位于“no”后,应用“choose”的名词choice“选择”,作have的宾语,have no choice but to do“除了……别无选择”。故填choice。
56.句意:Jimmy想回去,但是他也想要冰淇淋。 “he also wanted ice cream”和“Jimmy did want to turn around”是转折关系,因此此处应用连词but“但是”。故填but。
“have difficulty (in) doing sth.”
此空位于介词“of”后作宾语,应用“achieve”的名词achievement“成就”,a sense of achievement“一种成就感”。故填achievement。

A.Trying the AI system for more fruits.
B.Putting the AI system into the market.
C.Testing the AI system in different countries.
D.Checking the effectiveness of the Al prediction.
