While many Chinese don’t agree on what food is best, almost everyone loves hot pot.
The most popular kind of hot pot is the Sichuan hot pot, with its red peppers (辣椒) and huajiao. What makes Sichuan hot pot different from other hot pots is the use of huajiao. It is said that the spicy (辣的) food helps people live through Sichuan’s hot and wet weather. The Beijing hot pot uses mutton and many of the same ingredients(食材) as the Sichuan hot pot. Since its broth (底汤) is mostly just water and has no red peppers, it is not spicy. The Northeast hot pot usually uses pork and pickled (腌制的) cabbage, while the Guangdong hot pot uses a chicken or a fish broth, and is known for its many kinds of ingredients, including seafood. Almost any kind of ingredient can be found in hot pot cooking. There are as many kinds of hot pots as there are cooks.
With a hot pot, you can put in any ingredient that you like. The same pot can serve any number of different meals to the people sitting around the table. No one is left out, and everyone gets to eat as much—or as little—as they want. This shows the Chinese cultural values of openness and sharing. Finally, not only does hot pot taste wonderful, but eating hot pot is the perfect way to spend time with others.
People like to joke that there is no problem that a hot pot can’t solve. The fire from a hot pot can melt (融化) any disagreement and warm any heart. Over a hot pot people can talk and share not just food, but friendship. While the food may soon be forgotten, these friendships stay with us forever.
26.What is the difference between Sichuan hot pot and other hot pots?
A.The use of huajiao. B.The use of fish soup.
C.The use of pickled cabbage. D.The use of mutton.
27.Why do most Chinese like hot pot according to the passage?
A.Because it can be cooked easily.
B.Because it can warm the stomach and the heart.
C.Because it can be forgotten easily.
D.Because it can help live a healthy life.
28.What Chinese cultural values does hot pot show us?
A.Honesty and sharing. B.Love and responsibility.
C.Bravery and openness. D.Openness and sharing.

Once again the Captain’s will won. Silent, the men returned to their posts. But Captain Columbus was worried because he knew in his heart that a day would come when his words would no longer help. Before that day, he would see land.
Not an eye closed that night. The Captain stood on the high poop (艉楼) and with sleepless eyes he tried hard to look into the darkness ahead.
Then, two hours before midnight, the miracle happened. A far-off light struck his eyes. It wavered (摇曳) once or twice, moving quickly on the horizon, like a fisherman’s boat on the waves.
His heart hammered (砰砰直跳). But he dared not cry out, “Land!”
“Your eyes are sharp, Alfredo,” he whispered to a young sailor. “Tell me what you see.”
Even as he spoke, the light disappeared.
“I see nothing.” The sailor stared into the darkness. The light had reappeared. “Look out!”
“Ah, yes, yes! A light. Over there.”
“Quiet! Are you sure, Alfredo?”
“But yes, Captain! It is gone now, yet I saw it.”
Surely this was not a trick of the light! Alfredo had seen it too. Somewhere ahead in darkness were human beings and inhabited land. They stood shoulder to trembling shoulder, staring into the dark.
Hour after hour passed. The sand-glass under the lantern showed that it was two o’clock in the morning. The other two ships loomed (隐约出现) vaguely and in the east the line of the horizon was clearly defined.
Then came a flash of flame (火焰). The long-awaited signal! Land in sight.
“Land! Land!” Almost immediately came the ringing cry. There in the west, green and fair, lay an island.
Who can tell how Christopher Columbus felt at that moment? The long waiting was at an end. The dream had come true.

A.Worried → nervous → excited. B.Scared → curious → happy.
C.Afraid → happy → excited. D.Excited → scared → happy.
32.What was Captain Columbus’ dream?
A.Finding the human beings in the sea. B.Being saved by other ships.
C.Helping his sailors get the light in the darkness. D.Discovering the land on the horizon.

Back in 2010, when Meera Chandran visited her homeland, she discovered that her ancestral land was covered with Lantana Camara, a plant that is able to kill native plants and damage (破坏) the ecological (生态的) balance. Meera, then a worker of an IT company and someone who has always been interested in ecology, decided to clean up the 8-acre (8英亩的) land to take the plants away from it.
Instead of using the earliest method of buying an earth mover (推土机), she asked some farmers to pull out the plants by hand. “If the seeds of Lantana are covered with sunlight when earth is moved, it would promote (促进) their growth. Also, using an earth mover would damage the natural flora (植物群) of the land,” says Meera.
So the land was cleared using the cut root-stock method (截根法), which means cutting the roots 2-3 inches below the earth to control its ability to spread. Next, she turned the land back into a forest area by planting native plants. “The land lies in the eastern part of Western Ghats and after researching what type of plants are included in the area’s natural flora, we planted them,” she says.
This was not an easy task. It took three years to clear Lantana away and two more years to plant native plants. Halfway through Meera decided to turn this into an official action and set up Forest First Smith in 2010 to protect native plants and encourage farmers to grow different native plants in farmlands.
“We have protected over 150 kinds of native plants of Western Ghats so far. The plants have been planted in an area of more than 300 acres in Kerala’s Wayanad and Karnataka’s Kodagu,” says the protector.
But Meera says this is never a single-handed project. All these became a reality with the support from the state forest departments, local communities and like-minded (志同道合的) persons. From 3-5 workers to more than 40 from the communities today, the organization has grown greatly.
33.How did Meera feel when she saw her ancestral land?
A.Excited. B.Curious. C.Puzzled. D.Worried.
34.Why didn’t Meera use an earth mover?
A.She didn’t consider it to be helpful.
B.She didn’t have enough money.
C.She wanted to help farmers to make money.
D.She wanted to study the natural flora of the land.
35.What did Meera realize when clearing her ancestral land halfway?
A.She had used a wrong method.
B.She should cut Lantana’s roots completely.
C.She should do more for ecology there.
D.She had caught the attention of some officials.
36.What does Meera mean by saying “this is never a single-handed project”?
A.It is not a short-term project.
B.She received a lot of help with her project.
C.She faced great difficulties when setting up her project.
D.Her project isn’t the only project that protects the environment.

“But it’s for Grandma! She said she needed a football for the New Year’s Eve dinner.” I said.
“A football for the dinner?” Mum laughed. “No, Grandma needs a fruit bowl, not a football.”
“Fruit bowl sounds like football! I have done a silly thing!” I went back to my room, embarrassed and disappointed.
Before dinner, Mum came in and asked me to meet my uncles and aunts. When I walked into the living room, Grandma was showing them a pretty fruit bowl with the old football in its centre, I was surprised.

【答案】26.A 27.B 28.D

A.Finding the human beings in the sea. B.Being saved by other ships.
C.Helping his sailors get the light in the darkness. D.Discovering the land on the horizon.
【答案】29.B 30.A 31.A 32.D
结合全文,尤其根据第一段“Before that day, he would see land.”
根据第三段“Then, two hours before midnight, the miracle happened. A far-off light struck his eyes.” 故选A。
根据第一段“But Captain Columbus was worried because he knew in his heart that a day would come when his words would no longer help.” But he dared not cry out, ‘Land!’” Land!’ Almost immediately came the ringing cry.” 故选A。
综合全文,尤其是根据倒数第三段“Then came a flash of flame. The long-awaited signal! Land in sight.”和倒数第一段“The long waiting was at an end. The dream had come true.”

【答案】33.D 34.A 35.C 36.B
根据“she discovered that her ancestral land was covered with Lantana Camara, a plant that is able to kill native plants and damage (破坏) the ecological (生态的) balance.”
根据“If the seeds of Lantana are covered with sunlight when earth is moved, it would promote (促进) their growth. Also, using an earth mover would damage the natural flora (植物群) of the land,”可知,推土机会将种子暴露于阳光下,反而促进Lantana Camara的生长,并破坏土地上的自然植被,因此她认为推土机并不利于根除这种植物。故选A。
根据“Halfway through Meera decided to turn this into an official action and set up Forest First Smith in 2010 to protect native plants and encourage farmers to grow different native plants in farmlands.”
根据划线句子后文“All these became a reality with the support from the state forest departments, local communities and like-minded (志同道合的) persons.”

I remembered my friend Joe had an old football. I went out quietly and found him. I gave him my favourite model car in exchange for his football.
I took the football home, shined it and put it on the living room table secretly. I waited in my room for Grandma to notice it.
“Mike!” Mum shouted. I ran to the living room. “Why can’t you put your things where they belong? Get the football out of here!”
