We have most friends at the age of 26,after having spent the first quarter of our lives building up our friendship circle, new research has shown.
The research into friendship shows that our social circle peaks (达到高峰) at 26 years and 7 months,at which we typically have five close friends.Women are the most popular at 25 years and 10 months, while men hitting the highest friendship point a little later at 27 years and 3 months.
The research,by Forever Friends, shows that about a third of adults meet their closest friends while at school, with about a fifth saying they meet them at work.
Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter now also play a major role in building new friendship. The research points out that 25- to 34-year-olds make 22 friends via (通过) Facebook compared to 18- to 24-year-olds who make 12,and 35- to 44-year-olds who make just 4.
Forever Friends’ relationship coach Sam Owen says,“It is no coincidence (巧合) that over a third of us meet our best friends at school. It is a key time in our lives when friendship is growing through sharing notes, giving gifts, seeing each other regularly and laughing a lot.As adults we can often forget how powerful these small things are and how the little things can make a difference.”
Later in life we find ourselves losing friends.Over half of us lose friendship through a moving, while 36% say that over time they grow apart from close pals.Having children also causes 19% to drift away from childhood friends.
With growing pressure being put on friendship these days,it’s important to make time for our friendship.

“Why she let out my secret? Why she did that to me?”I vividly remembered that day when I was confused at the knowing looks which everyone gave me.That terrible experience was imprinted (铭刻)on my mind.I couldn’t forgive the person with whom I had shared my secret. She lost all my trust and friendship.
Five years back,Sally was a new addition in our class.I don’t know what but there was something special about her that attracted me towards her.She was the most friendly person I knew.We started as classmates but after a few months we were like best friends. We did homework together and dreamed of going to the same university one day.We hung out and went to the movies on weekends. That was a sweet time.
Nevertheless,I couldn’t expect such a thing.I didn’t know what made me tell Sally about my personal life.I felt much regret to myself.
She exaggerated(夸大)the matter, and made it the hottest topic in school. It was like someone had stabbed a knife in my back. After she revealed my secret, everyone at school started laughing at me and staring at me wherever I passed.I was like a pond in which someone had thrown a stone and it had been spilled(溢出) up.It was the most embarrassing time I had gone through.Soon afterwards,I left school and shifted to another one, because I thought no one had the right to laugh at me.Sally called me many times but I didn’t answer. My heart was broken because the person whom I trusted most cheated me.
I made efforts to remove that from my heart.I started a new life, leaving all the bad memories behind, because they made me a person who often thought about the past experiences.Five years later, with the life going on,I made new friends and seldom thought about the past.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

I immediately called Sally in order to explain the misunderstanding. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Sally
Why she let out my secret? Why she did that to me?
It was like someone had stabbed a knife in my back.
I was like a pond in which someone had thrown a stone and it had been spilled up.
I started a new life, leaving all the bad memories behind, because they made me a person who often thought about the past experiences.
Five years later, with the life going on,I made new friends and seldom thought about the past.
第一段首句译文:_______________________________________________ ____________________________
第二段首句译文:________________________________________
Anna said that after I left school the talk about me soon disappeared and everyone in our class missed me.
After getting through,I sincerely apologized to her.
Now I got a lesson that we should learn to trust our loved ones, because a little mistake can lead us to ruin what we should value.
→Sally
But one day I met Anna in the market,my former classmate, who told me shocking news.Anna said that after I left school the talk about me soon disappeared and everyone in our class missed me.Because I left without saying goodbye,Sally was sad for a long time. And to my amazement, she told me that it was Mary who happened to overhear my conversation with Sally and brought my secret to light.I was all at sea, feeling that the floor had slipped away beneath my feet.Anxious and regretful,I asked Anna for contact with Sally.
I immediately called Sally in order to explain the misunderstanding. After getting through,I sincerely apologized to her.Hearing my voice, she could hardly believe her ears. What astonished me most was that she was still willing to be my friend.I was in tears, guilt and joy.At that moment,I wished it had not happened.I wished time could go back and I could overcome my mistake. Now I got a lesson that we should learn to trust our loved ones, because a little mistake can lead us to ruin what we should value.

There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have lots of friends at school. However,he wasn’t sure whether or not his schoolmates were his real friends,so he asked his grandpa for help. The old man told him,“I just have what you exactly need, and it’s in the attic (阁楼).Wait here a minute.” Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there.“Take it.It’s a very special chair. It’s rather tricky to sit on because it’s invisible (无形的),but if you take it to school and you try to sit on it,you’ll be able to tell who your real friends are.” Grandpa said.
Mario was curious to know whether it was true or not,so he took the strange invisible chair and set off for school. At break time he asked everyone to form a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair.“Nobody move! You’re about to see something amazing.”
Then Mario tried to sit on the chair. But he missed and fell down onto his back.Everyone had a pretty good laugh.Mario wouldn’t be beaten. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, and kept falling to the ground...until,suddenly,he tried again and didn’t fall. This time he sat, hovering (悬浮) in mid-air...
Looking around,Mario saw George,Lucas and Diana—three of his best friends, holding him up,so he wouldn’t fall down.Meanwhile, many others he had thought of as friends had done nothing but make fun of him, enjoying his every fall.
Leaving with his three friends,he explained to them how his grandfather had so cleverly thought of a way to show him that true friends are those who care for us,and not just any acquaintance (熟人) who happens to be passing by.Even less would a friend be someone who takes joy in our misfortunes.

If you are annoyed by rats, think twice about getting a cat.It might lead to the appearance of a rat-free home, but it turns out that the rats are still there. They are just hidden.
“Cats are not the natural enemy of rats,”says Michael Parsons of Fordham University,New York.“They prefer smaller prey(猎物).”
His team has been studying a rat kingdom at a recycling plant in New York. When some cats moved into the plant last year, the researchers were disappointed, but decided to set up cameras to monitor the area.
Over five months, they saw just three attempts by cats to catch rats, only two of which succeeded.“The rat population is still increasing,”says Parsons.
Cats have good reasons to be cautious. The common rat has large teeth that can make a painful bite and carry lots of diseases. They also weigh 340 grams on average—compared with 25 grams for a mouse.
Parsons thinks that only starving cats will attempt to attack rats, unless the rats are sick or injured. The two rats killed during the team’s study might have been weakened by eating poisoned bait(诱饵),he says.
However, cats do have a big influence on the rats’ behavior.“Rats overestimate the risk brought by cats,”says Parsons. His team found that when cats are in the area, rats spend much more time in hiding and creep(悄悄地缓慢行进) around more cautiously. That means they are much less likely to be seen by people, which could explain why most people wrongly think cats are good at killing rats.
Some cat owners may be convinced their pets are excellent rat killers. But Parsons has found that many people mistake mice for rats. That said,it is possible there are a few exceptional cats that do take on healthy, adult rats,he says.
28.Why were the researchers disappointed according to Paragraph 3?
A.Their study was disturbed.
B.The rat kingdom was destroyed.
C.The rats were driven away by the cats.
D.They found cats are not rats’ natural enemy.
√
29.Why does the author think it’s good for the cats to be cautious about rats?
A.The rats are hard to eat.
B.The rats can kill cats easily.
C.The rats may spread diseases to them.
D.The rats have a kingdom to protect them.
根据第五段中的“Cats have good reasons to be cautious. The common rat has large teeth that can make a painful bite and carry lots of diseases.”
√
30.What influence do cats have on rats?
A.Rats are killed in large numbers.
B.Rats are frightened and hide longer.
C.Rats have to fight hard against cats.
D.Rats escape from the plant to survive.
√
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.It’s Useless to Raise Cats at Home
B.Rats Are Actually Different from Mice
C.Cats Are Actually Bad at Catching Rats
D.Our Wrong Idea About Rats Is Corrected

Life affects friendships. As we grow, marry, fight in wars, move across the country or change jobs, old friendships fall away and new ones form. As long as we live, the things around us change, and as long as things change, friendships are affected.
When we were children, we had best friends. No matter what happened we were still friends. We live our lives, however, and do what life calls for us to do, and as we get older, memories fade, faces blur (变得模糊), and even friends' names from childhood are forgotten.
Do you have a question about friendship? Do you wonder what to do with a friend who is no longer friendly? Perhaps you will see that you can't control others. If some people want to be your friends, it is their choice. All you can do is treat them well and do the best for them when you are with them. Then you wish them well when they leave.
You can talk to old-timers and they will tell you that life is full of incredible (难以置信的) joy and incredible sorrow, and that what bothers you today will one day become a memory and the pain will be gone. Seniors might tell you that you will learn more as you get older. They will tell you that friendships come and friendships go. Sometimes when they go it will hurt you, but you will be okay with it. It's the way life works, after all.

D.Do our best to control them and make them listen to us.

My Opinions on Friendship
If you ask me what the most rewarding thing in the world is,I will tell you it is friendship. To me,friendship is like the sun in the sky,and it lights up my life. When I have trouble studying,I can ask my friends for help.Besides, when I’m successful,I can share my happiness with them.
As for the suggestions about making friends, the following are mine.First of all,I think we should be sincere in making friends.Secondly,I don’t think that the number of friends is the key,but a few true friends are enough for me.Finally,I think it is important to make friends who have the same interest as me.

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day,Robert and Henry were going home from school, when,on turning a corner,Robert cried out,“A fight! Let’s go and see!”
“No,” said Henry.“Let us go quietly home and not meddle with (插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (懦夫),and afraid to go,” said Robert, and he ran.Henry went straight home and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on,they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus,he just ignored (忽视) the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However,Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore.Instead,he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward.Everyday after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later,Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Robert was fast sinking. It seemed as if Robert would be drowned only with his hands sticking out of the water.Just at the moment,Henry happened to be passing by.Hearing the screams,Henry ran quickly to the riverside, threw off his clothes and jumped into the water without hesitation. He reached Robert just as he was sinking at the last moment.By great effort, and with too much danger to himself,he brought Robert back to the shore.
返回
Thus,Robert’s life was saved.Robert and his new friends were ashamed at having called Henry a coward. They realized that Robert had true courage. And it was Henry who was the true friend worth making. They said sorry to Henry for their rude behavior and asked for his forgiveness.Henry forgave them happily. He and Robert were friends again and they went home together as usual. From this,Robert learned what true courage was: never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do evil.
