Daddy had passed away the previous year,so Leonard,my grown brother was always quick to help anytime Mama called. This time my brother was asked to tear down an old shed.My sister Angie and I,with no shoes on,dogged his every step, trying to help, though reminded and warned of rusty nails (生锈的钉子) by Mama.
Suddenly,Angie started screaming and Mama came running.Sure enough, she had stepped on a rusty nail.Mama examined my sister’s foot while Leonard looked at mine.On my way to see about Angie,I’d stepped on a nail, too. The grown-ups agreed we needed tetanus (破伤风疫苗) shots.
I hated shots,so I whispered to Mama,“I don’t want to get a shot.”My mama directed my sister’s attention to other place, and then cupped a hand around my ear.“Arlene, you and Angie have to get tetanus shots.I need you to be brave so she won’t be too scared. If you take the shot without crying or screaming, maybe she won’t do that as well when her turn comes.”
Loving and respecting my mother and wanting to relieve her worry,I made up my mind to get that awful shot without crying a single tear.
At the hospital,a nurse walked in with a syringe (注射器).Angie’s big blue eyes studied the nurse’s every move. The needle hurt so much that I wanted to scream.Mama looked down at my sister and then back at me.I knew she was reminding me to be brave.I didn’t cry or scream.
Then it was my sister’s turn.Mama lowered my sister onto the table.“See there,Angie.Your big sister wasn’t afraid to get a shot.Arlene, tell Angie it didn’t hurt at all.”

Mama waited for me to tell Angie that getting the shot wouldn’t hurt.
Arlene knew she had to lie to her sister to make her less scared, but she knew deep down that the shot wasn’t as painless as she said. She lowered her head, hesitated, and then gathered the courage to say loudly,“Angie,it doesn’t hurt, really!”
Angie still looked at the nurse with fear in her eyes, trying to struggle, but the nurse gently soothed her.Arlene stood by,silently cheering for her sister, hoping she would be brave.
When the needle approached Angie, she screamed loudly and tried to jump off the bed.Arlene rushed over, grabbing her hand,“Angie, don’t be scared,it will be over soon!”
On the way home,Angie buried her face in Mama’s chest, crying.
Arlene could feel Mama’s worried expression, and she felt guilty, thinking maybe she hadn’t done enough. She couldn’t dare to look at Angie’s crying face, staring quietly out of the window.
Suddenly,Angie stretched out her tiny hand and gently patted Arlene’s shoulder.Arlene turned her head and saw her sister’s sweet face, tears rolling down her cheeks. She held her sister’s hand, feeling a warmth she had never felt before.
Seeing her sister’s comforting gesture,Mama smiled.Leonard looked at the two girls in the back seat, feeling proud of their strength. The car was filled with a warm atmosphere.

A
Indeed, there is no better way to spend time with your family than on the beach. There are many popular beach destinations, like the West Coast,East Coast and the Gulf.If you plan carefully in advance, you as well as your family can enjoy the best vacation of your lifetime.
While choosing a destination, make sure you take a number of factors into consideration, like the weather and what to wear. The southern states tend to get warm in the summer, while the northern states are too cold in the winter.Browse through the Internet to find out what the climate will be like in your destination of choice and what is the best time to go.
When planning for accommodation, make sure you read the wording very carefully in brochures and ads.Ocean front rooms mean you will be facing the ocean literally, and ocean view means that you will be able to see the ocean from your window.
Always find out beforehand whether or not the beach you are visiting is safe for your family.Avoid those parts of the beach with rip tides and strong currents.Make sure that there is a lifeguard on duty all the time and that the area is patrolled regularly.
If you and your family want to spend time going other things other than lying in the sun all day,you can search for other facilities in the area to help you rent jet skis, bicycles or body boards.Look for other forms of entertainment for yourself and the family.
You may want the planning and decisions to be made by you.In such a case, there are many package deals available online or in travel agencies. These package deals sometimes include lodging, airfare, car rental and other features also.

If you are planning on travelling, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.
First of all, always check and double-check departure (出发) time.It is surprising how few people really do this carefully.Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten.My secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane would leave at 10:50.Surprisingly,the person at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore,I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.
The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards,it is still important to have some local money in cash (现金).Once I arrived at a place at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi but because I had no dollars,I offered to pay in pounds instead.“Listen! I only take real money!” the driver said angrily. You can imagine how terrible I felt at that moment.
The third and the last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave.I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travelled in heavy suits and raincoats in May,when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester,to places like Athens,Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.

6.When the author found he had no dollars to pay the taxi driver, what did he do?
A.He asked the driver to give him a free ride.
B.He offered to pay in pounds.
C.He gave the driver some fake (假的) money.
D.He tried to pay by credit card.
根据第三段“The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi but because I had no dollars,I offered to pay in pounds instead.”
7.What is the weather like in May in London?
A.Warm and dry. B.Cold and dry.

When our expedition leader 1 we would make a Zodiac 2 at Jan Mayen,a tiny island in the Arctic Ocean,I stepped out onto my balcony aboard our ship, 3 to find clear skies and calm seas. 4 ,I was met with a gust of wet wind and a view of mist-covered mountains in the distance.Jan Mayen wasn’t on our itinerary (行程),and due to its 5 location and often unpredictable weather, very few people ever 6 the island.I knew the 7 weren’t ideal, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me.
In fact, the possibility of 8 adventures was one of the reasons I chose this small-ship cruise. So I 9 joined my shipmates in the mud room, where we put on waterproof clothes and life jackets before hopping in the Zodiac for a bumpy 10 to a black-sand beach.Even the fierce wind and rain couldn’t 11 our excitement as we 12 our way to the beach and hiked to a viewpoint, pausing to photograph little purple flowers 13 the volcanic rocks.
Our visit there wasn’t about what we could do or see.It was an opportunity to just be—to exist in a brief 14 on a tiny, often inaccessible, volcanic rock in the Arctic. And that’s something I never thought I’d 15 in my lifetime.
