When starting college, most students enjoy a week’s stay on campus before classes actually begin. What should you do with that time? Below are several tips to ease yourself into college life.
Participating in Campus Welcome Activities
Most universities host welcome events before the academic year officially begins, including freshmen orientations (迎新会),campus picnics, and entertainments like concerts.
Participating in such events is a great way to learn about school facilities and understand campus culture:What do students do for fun? What are their favorite classes? What is the history of your university? It can help you observe campus life outside the classroom.
Exploring Campus
Getting to know where essential campus resources are—such as the student advising center, psychological services, and the tutoring center—will make your first few weeks on campus a lot easier, because you won’t have to look for them while still getting used to your classes.
Take some time to check out the buildings where your classes will be held. This will prevent you from getting lost in the first few days of classes, and familiarize you with how long it takes to get from place to place. If you’re worried about taking classes one after another in different buildings,a quick test run won’t hurt. That way,you will avoid potential time delays in getting to your classes.
Starting a Routine
Before getting too excited about all of the fun things you will be able to do during the week, remember that you do have a pretty big schedule change coming up.Starting classes means being in different places at different times,so it’s a great idea to start getting used to that routine right this week.
What helps you most is to schedule your sleep.Following the planned time will ensure you have enough sleep to get to those early classes and stay wide awake.
If you have other daily routines, such as exercising or talking on the phone with family, work those into your day-to-day life before classes start so that you get a better idea of how they fit in with your schedule.

Fright started taking over.I was walking into my first school in America.I had traveled a long distance from India in order to join my parents, who had been here for three years, hoping America would help my future. My father decided that I would be better off going to school here,so I registered in the local high school in my new town.
I was afraid how I would do.On the first day,I went to my second period class after I had missed my first.Anxiously,I reached for the door, opening it slowly.Without paying attention to my classmates,I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a soft voice,he answered,“Yes.” His voice made me feel a little comfortable. He gave me a sheet called Course Requirements, which I would never get in India because we didn’t have anything like that. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit.I didn’t actually want to pick a seat.In India we had fixed (固定的) seats,so I never needed to worry about that.I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image produced by the overhead projector. In India schools,we didn’t use the technology we had.We had to take notes as the teacher spoke.
It was noon.I was very confused about when I would have lunch.I went to my next class and the bell rang as I entered.Again,I asked the teacher if I was in the right class. She said,“It’s still fourth period.”
“But the bell just rang,” I said.
Changing from a gentle tone to a harsher(刺耳的)one, she said,“That is the lunch bell, young man.”
I said sorry.Without another word I headed for the dining hall.I felt lucky because we didn’t have this in India.Every confusion seemed like a barrier(障碍) I had to get through to reach my goal.At the end of the day,I was on my way to the bus which we didn’t have in India either.I found my bus and sat down inside happily.I was thinking today wasn’t so bad.

It’s time to go back to high school.Students are excited about the new beginning. But for many kids, the first day is more about friends than classes, and maybe with good reason. On that day,the teacher takes attendance(考勤),hands out books, and describes the teaching plan.If a student hears the same things in seven classes, you can’t blame(责备) them for thinking it’s going to be another long year. When the high schoolers’ parents ask what they did in school,it’s pretty likely that the answer will be “Nothing”.
It doesn’t have to be this way.Kids always want exciting changes, and you can give them a taste of how appealing your course will be.One English teacher asks students to write 77 words about what they want to get in her class. Then she reads their responses out aloud. She keeps the responses until the last day of the school year. Finally she hands them back to students so that they can see if they achieved what they wanted. After encouraging kids with a year-long game, she begins the English course.
On the first day of science,a teacher gives students 30 minutes to build something to improve people’s lives.A history teacher organizes a debate on whether Swiss cheese is better than cheddar. In math class, another teacher puts students in groups of three, and gives them six minutes to come up with as many answers as possible to the question,“What is math good for?”
The new class activities are part of our school-wide movement to improve the first day of classes. Many teachers choose to use creative ways to encourage kids from day one.And all students seem to enjoy the changes.Quite a few parents told me that their kids said,“I think English (or math or biology or Spanish) is going to be great!”

A.Confusing. B.Ordinary.

(2025·天津耀华中学高一期末)
Some teens are disapproving of compulsory BMI(body mass index)(身体质量指数) checks in PE classes.Do BMI checks at school do more harm than good? Two teens take sides.
Maya Meade,a high school freshman in Ohio, says yes.“I understand that schools want to weigh students because they are concerned about their physical health. That’s not a bad thing! But what about their mental health? For many students, the appearance and self-image are huge sources of stress.Forcing teens to be weighed at school will only increase the pressure they feel to fit a certain mold (模子),”says Maya.
In Maya’s opinion, weight is a personal matter that should stay between a doctor and a patient. She says,“Just imagine someone who struggles with the body image being told that his or her BMI is too high as classmates look on! Even if other kids can’t hear,no student wants to feel judged by his or her teacher. That’s not why we go to school.”
Maya thinks if a school wants to have an impact on a student’s physical health, there are better ways to do it,such as providing healthy but filling meals, encouraging physical activity and teaching students about nutrition.
Ben Bagbek,a second-year student in a high school in New York, holds a different opinion.“There is no reason why a school should not be allowed to weigh its students and teach them how to calculate BMI! Obesity (肥胖症) is a huge public health concern in our country. And schools are in a position to help students understand what their weight means to their health—before they’re at risk of life-threatening conditions.”
“A school’s job is to help students reach their full potential, and your health undoubtedly plays a role in your academic performance.BMI is not a perfect measure, but it can help you identify the need for healthier eating habits or more physical activity,” says Ben.
The bottom line is:When you feel good, you learn better. As long as the actual number on the scale stays private,it should be viewed as an important part of your health education.

“Not again!” Aliya shouted angrily, looking at the marks she had attained in her maths test.
It seemed as if failing in the math test had become a part and parcel of her life.Despite her efforts, she had been unable to perform well.Tears in her eyes, she quickly shoved (乱塞) the paper into her bag before any classmate could make a rude comment on her.
Effortlessly, using the back of her palm, she was wiping the tears when her teacher Mrs Leena noticed her.She came to Aliya’s desk and,in a soft voice, asked her to see her during the break time.
Wondering what it could be,Aliya waited impatiently for lunchtime. Finally, when the bell rang, she made her way to Mrs Leena. As soon as she saw Aliya, she gestured for her to sit on the empty chair beside her.
She carefully studied her face, cleared her throat with a bright smile and said,“You seem to be anxious.I think I know what’s bothering you.If you allow me,I think together we may come up with a good solution.”
With a puzzled look, she said,“Well ma’am,you know I have been struggling in maths since the beginning of the term.It seems as if no matter how hard I work,I am unable to get the desired result.I feel so upset,” she said sadly.
“You need not be so gloomy,” encouraged Mrs Leena.“With these three key ingredients:hard work, determination and resilience (快速恢复的能力),you will move ahead and succeed. It’s always the first step that’s difficult, but once you decide not to look back and not give up,you will be successful,my dear.Come on,gather yourself and let’s work on it together.”
From that day onwards,Aliya worked hard, religiously following her teacher’s advice.By the time the final exams drew close, she had thoroughly revised her math book and well-prepared.

2.请按如下格式作答。

参考范文
On the exam day,a fear of failure upset her stomach.Aliya’s heart raced as she sat down in front of the desk. She took a deep breath, trying to recall the encouragement from Mrs Leena. As she began the test, the questions seemed difficult at first, but she pushed through, step by step, using the strategies she had learned. With each question she completed, her confidence grew.By the end of the exam,Aliya felt a sense of accomplishment, not because she was sure she had faced it,but because she had faced her fears and given it her all.
She passed her math exam with an unbelievable A grade on her report card. The moment she saw the grade, tears of joy welled up in her eyes.It wasn’t just a grade. It was a testament to her hard work, her teacher’s unwavering support, and the resilience she had found within herself.Aliya left the room with her head held high,no longer the student who dreaded math, but a young woman who had conquered her fears and believed in her abilities.
