三、阅读(共两节,满分35分)
Chances of depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses have been increasing in young generations for at least a decade. And in recent years, scientists and doctors have often regarded social media as one possible cause. But how big a role social media plays seems to depend on how teens choose to use it.
In recent years, social media has done some great things. It has brought people closer together. It has helped people form big communities that can reach around the world. And it can be an important place for people to find support and connection. But some teenagers can come across harmful content (内容) and even suffer from cyberbullying (网络暴力). For instance, one 2022 survey found that nearly half of all teens in the survey were cyberbullied online.
Social media is also a space where people often compare themselves to others. Am I pretty enough? Strong enough? Smart enough? Cool enough? One study of teens 13 to 17 years old found that almost half reported that time spent on social media made them feel worse about their bodies. Only about one in every seven said viewing social media made them feel better.
To make sure social media plays a positive role, there is a lot we can do to take control. In May 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General shared some advice on teens’ social media use. It offers tips people can take to help ensure teenagers and their families have the necessary information and tools to make social media safer for children.
First of all, technology companies can better survey the influence of their products on teens, share data with researchers to increase our overall understanding of the influences, and make development decisions that put safety and health in the first place—including protecting teens’ privacy and better following the age limits.
Besides, parents can make plans in their families such as building tech-free zones that better develop in-person relationships, teaching teenagers about responsible online behavior and modeling that behavior, and reporting problematic content and activities.
Also, teenagers can follow healthy practices like limiting time on platforms, blocking unwanted content, being careful about sharing personal information, and reaching out if they or friends need help or see abuse (辱骂) on the platforms.
Janis Whitlock, a psychologist who has been studying Internet use by teenagers since the early 2000s, says that social media use needs to be intentional. By that, she means it should be used for some purposeful goals, not just to pass the time or as a distraction (分散注意). She asks the teens she works with to put together a “menu of practices” that encourages good mental health. It should include little things they enjoy. Whitlock suggests that if kids feel anxious, they should go back to that menu again and do something from their list-instead of looking for distractions on their phone and social media.
26.Why does the writer mention the study in Paragraph 3?
A.To show the problem of social media among teens.
B.To compare different ways of viewing social media.
C.To introduce the ways to make social media more positive.
D.To tell the reasons why teens are cyberbullied on social media.
27.Which of the following situations makes sure the social media plays a positive role?

B.Tom shows others’ real names online to help his friend who is being cyberbullied.
C.WeChat regularly shares teenagers’ personal information with technology companies.
D.Amy’s parents teach her to have polite and respectful online conversations with others.
28.What can we learn about social media from the passage?
A.Using social media as a distraction is better than using it for other goals.
B.People can find support and connections through the help of social media.
C.Over half of the kids feel better about their bodies when using social media.
D.Social media is the main cause of depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses.
29.What can be the best title of the passage?
A.Online safety: Why does social media matter?

Being at home calls for some creativity to take the kids on an adventure (冒险). How can you make a fun indoor camping experience?
Sleep in a tent
To make the camping real, try and sleep in a real tent. If you don’t have one, then you can always set up a simple tent out of blankets (毯子) and your dining room table. Fill the inside of your tent with sleeping bags and torch (手电筒). The kids may want to bring their fairy lights and soft toys to the inside of the tent, too.
Make a pretend campfire (假篝火)
Get the kids to make a pretend campfire. You can use some colored card and shine a torch. You can also add some firewood around it. If you are lucky enough to have a real fireplace, then use this instead! The best thing about a campfire is that your family can sit around it to tell scary stories, make shadow puppets (影子木偶) or play campfire games.
Bedtime stories by flashlight (手电筒)
Children will enjoy reading bedtime stories by flashlight in their tent. Somehow reading by flashlight always makes stories seem more exciting for kids. Your little ones will fall asleep from their indoor camping adventure. And it’s time for you to relax and enjoy watching them sleep.

People around the world start their day with a cup of coffee. They believe coffee helps them keep awake and gives them energy. This is because of something called caffeine in coffee. But a new study shows _________!
Researchers worked with 20 students from Slovenian universities. All were healthy and in their early 20s, and drank coffee often.
Before the study, the students didn’t drink any coffee for eight hours. They also slept for at least seven hours the night before. The scientists checked their health, heart rate (心率), and blood pressure (血压).
When the study began, each student got a cup of coffee. All the cups looked and tasted the same. None of them had real coffee with full caffeine. But in half of the cups, scientists added just a little bit of caffeine. The students didn’t know which kind they got.
After drinking the coffee, the students waited 20 minutes. Then they took some tests. The scientists wanted to see how the coffee changed their bodies and brains.
They thought the coffee with caffeine would make a bigger change. But something surprising happened. Both groups showed the same body changes. Their hearts beat more slowly, and their blood pressure went up.
The students also did some math and listening tests. There was no big difference in the math grades. But for the listening test, all students did better after coffee. The ones who had caffeine did a little better, but the others also improved.
This shows that caffeine may help us listen and understand sounds faster. But it also shows that people may feel more awake just because they think they had caffeine. This is called the placebo effect (安慰剂效应).
37.Which of the following can we put back into the blank “________”?
A.coffee with no caffeine can help people more
B.coffee with caffeine is bad for people’s health

D.It looked like common coffee but had a little or no caffeine.
39.What may the writer talk about next?
A.How the placebo effect works.
B.Whether other drinks can make people awake.
C.Who experiences the placebo effect often in their life.
D.What people can do to tell whether coffee has caffeine.
40.Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?

【导语】本文主要介绍了一项新研究表明,咖啡的提神效果可能更多来自心理作用(安慰剂效应),而非咖啡因本身。
37.推理判断题。根据“But something surprising happened. Both groups showed the same body changes. Their hearts beat more slowly, and their blood pressure went up.”可知,无咖啡因组和有咖啡因组出现相同的生理变化,心率变慢、血压上升,且两组学生的测试表现均提升,说明即使不含咖啡因的咖啡也可能产生类似效果。故选C。
38.细节理解题。根据“All the cups looked and tasted the same. None of them had real coffee with full caffeine. But in half of the cups, scientists added just a little bit of caffeine.”可知,所有咖啡杯外观和口味相同,但一半仅含微量咖啡因。故选D。
39.推理判断题。根据“This is called the placebo effect.”可知,文章结尾首次提出安慰剂效应但未详细解释,下文最可能进一步说明该效应的原理。故选A。

C.WeChat regularly shares teenagers’ personal information with technology companies.
D.Amy’s parents teach her to have polite and respectful online conversations with others.
28.What can we learn about social media from the passage?
A.Using social media as a distraction is better than using it for other goals.
