Have you ever conducted a job interview through video? Do you work remotely and mostly communicate with your colleagues through technologies like Microsoft Teams or Slack? Technologies are rapidly changing how, when, and where we work. But what impact do they have on our work motivation? We recently reviewed the research done to answer this question and unfortunately, the news is not so good.
For the most part, technologies have worsened the satisfaction of our psychological needs when we work. They are robbing us of our feelings of control and freedom because they monitor us and tell us what and how to do our work; sometimes they also pressure us to work faster. And they are decreasing our chances to create meaningful relationships with colleagues.
To fix and avoid these issues in the future, we have concluded from this review that we need to advocate for the use of psychological knowledge when designing technologies to be used in work environments. Psychologists are well equipped to advise how to design and use technologies in ways that will maintain or even improve the design of our work.
Work is considered to be well-designed when it gives us some decision-making power, provides us with performance feedback, and allows us to connect with colleagues not only to increase relatedness but also to see the impact our work has on stakeholders Good work design makes our work more meaningful.
Why is this important? Because work motivation that stems from meaning and enjoyment will be increasingly important in the future of work. Indeed, as work environments and career tracks become more dynamic and precarious, we need workers to be more active and flexible for the changeable situation. And motivation through meaning and enjoyment makes people more active and flexible.
So, when you hear your employer wants to introduce new technologies in your workplace, ask them if they have used the service of psychology experts. It will ensure your work keeps being designed in a way that will make it meaningful and enjoyable.
4. According to the recent research review, how do technologies affect our work?
A. They decrease our working efficiency.
B. They increase our psychological needs.
C. They improve our relationships with colleagues.
D. They reduce our work motivation for creativity.
5. What does the author suggest for introducing technologies in work?
A. Updating technical equipment. B. Consulting psychology experts.
C. Reviewing the former research. D. Improving the design of our work.
6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The process of good work design. B. The potential decision-making power.
C. The characteristic of well-designed work. D. The meaning of connection with colleagues.
7. What does the underlined word “precarious” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Uncertain. B. Unavoidable. C. Rewarding. D. Straightforward.
C
“Is the glass half empty or half full?” This old English saying has long been used to tell a pessimist from an optimist. For most young people today, the answer is usually “half full”, because we have been taught that a positive attitude towards life is one of the primary keys to success.
However, is this necessarily a good thing? Recent studies indicate that it all depends. There is such a thing as too much positivity. It happens when someone remains in a happy and positive state and ignores any bad and negative emotions across all situations. But as a matter of fact, it is normal for us to experience any emotions. The death of a pet or loved one, a low score on a test, or a mountain of new homework should lead to emotions such as sadness, frustration and anger. If we hide these emotions just because we want to look optimistic in front of our friends and family, they can build up inside of us and end up erupting in unexpected ways. There is new evidence to suggest that many of these overly positive people are at a risk of developing drug or alcohol addictions as well as other psychological problems.
Aside from the personal emotional impacts, this attitude can also have a negative effect on the people around you. Imagine having had a bad day, and wanting to talk about it with your friend. However, instead of listening to your problems and sympathizing with you, they simply told you to “be positive” and give you the impression that your problems are being completely ignored. Just take everything as it comes and express how you really feel. This makes you human, and your true friends will always stick by you.
So my simple advice to you is to do what gives you the best “attitude” in life, whatever for you that might be. Regardless of whether a glass is half-empty or half-full, it nonetheless still has space to fill.
8. Why does the writer mention the glass at the beginning of the text?
A. To give some evidence. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To present an argument. D. To explain his ideas.
9. What is the writer’s attitude to the person who remains positive across all situations?
A. Negative. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
10. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The cause of overly positivity.
B. The prevention of overly positivity.
C. The bad effect of overly positivity on others.
D. The bad impacts of overly positivity on personal emotion.
11. Which of the following may the writer agree with?
A. Positivity is the key to success.
B. We needn’t stay positive all the time.
C. There isn’t such a thing as overly positive.
D. Positivity always does a harm effect to our lives.
D
One might expect that the ever-growing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holiday-makers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the long-term future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rock-bound Pacific island is advertised as ‘the last paradise on earth’.
However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. Overcrowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal. Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most in a rush to make quick money. In recent years, Nepal’s forests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise, with the consequent destruction of precious trees and plants.
The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The one-time farmer is now the servant of some multinational organization; he is no longer his own master. Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited. No doubt he wonders whether he wasn’t happier in his village working his own land.
Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards those countries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and the creation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in fact obtain financial support from tourist companies. At the same time, tourists are being encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also its people.
The way tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its fate and that of the countries we all want to visit. Increased understanding in planning worldwide tourism can preserve the market for these companies. If not, in a few years’ time the very things that attract tourists now may well have been destroyed.
12. What does the underlined sentence of Para. 1 imply about tourism expansion?
A. Its technical challenge. B. Its positive social effects.
C Its potential drawbacks. D. Its undervalued profitability.
13. Why does the author mention “Nepal” in Para. 2?
A. To support an argument. B. To make comparison.
C. To show cause and effect. D. To group related ideas.
14. What is the main impact of tourism on farmers based on the text?
A. Increased opportunities. B. Improved work-life balance.
C. Transformed livelihood. D. Enhanced social status.
15 What may determine the future of tourism?
A. Cultural diversity. B. Off-track destinations.
C. Stable market. D. Strengthened management.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

根据第二段“For the most part, technologies have worsened the satisfaction of our psychological needs when we work. They are robbing us of our feelings of control and freedom because they monitor us and tell us what and how to do our work; sometimes they also pressure us to work faster. And they are decreasing our chances to create meaningful relationships with colleagues. (在大多数情况下,技术恶化了我们工作时心理需求的满足。他们剥夺了我们的控制感和自由感,因为他们监视我们并告诉我们做什么以及如何做我们的工作;有时他们也会迫使我们更快地工作。它们正在减少我们与同事建立有意义的关系的机会。)” 可知,技术降低了我们创造性的工作动机。故选D项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“To fix and avoid these issues in the future, we have concluded from this review that we need to advocate for the use of psychological knowledge when designing technologies to be used in work environments. Psychologists are well equipped to advise how to design and use technologies in ways that will maintain or even improve the design of our work. (为了在未来解决和避免这些问题,我们从这篇综述中得出结论,在设计用于工作环境的技术时,我们需要倡导使用心理学知识。心理学家有能力就如何设计和使用技术提出建议,以保持甚至改进我们的工作设计。)”可知,对于在工作中引入技术,作者的建议是要咨询心理学专家。故选B项。
【6题详解】
主旨大意题。由文章第四段“Work is considered to be well-designed when it gives us some decision-making power, provides us with performance feedback, and allows us to connect with colleagues not only to increase relatedness but also to see the impact our work has on stakeholders(利益相关者). Good work design makes our work more meaningful.(当工作赋予我们一些决策权,为我们提供绩效反馈,并允许我们与同事联系,不仅可以增加相关性,还可以看到我们的工作对利益相关者的影响时,就被认为是精心设计的。好的工作设计使我们的工作更有意义。)”可知,本段主要讲精心设计工作的特点。故选C项。
【7题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段“Indeed, as work environments and career tracks become more dynamic and precarious, we need workers to be more active and flexible for the changeable situation. (事实上,随着工作环境和职业轨道变得更加动态和precarious,我们需要员工更加积极和灵活地应对多变的情况。)”中的“need workers to be more active and flexible for the changeable situation”可推断,此处表达工作环境和职业轨迹变得更加容易变化、不确定,precarious意为“不确定”与uncertain“多变的,不确定的”的意思一致。故选A项。
C
“Is the glass half empty or half full?” This old English saying has long been used to tell a pessimist from an optimist. For most young people today the answer is usually “half full”, because we have been taught that a positive attitude towards life is one of the primary keys to success.
B 9. A 10. C 11. B

C. Its potential drawbacks. D. Its undervalued profitability.
13. Why does the author mention “Nepal” in Para. 2?
A. To support an argument. B. To make comparison.
C. To show cause and effect. D. To group related ideas.
14. What is the main impact of tourism on farmers based on the text?
A. Increased opportunities. B. Improved work-life balance.
C. Transformed livelihood. D. Enhanced social status.
15. What may determine the future of tourism?
A. Cultural diversity. B. Off-track destinations.
C. Stable market. D. Strengthened management.
C 13. A 14. C 15. D

Dear Sir/ Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a student from Grade Two. Learning that you are wanting volunteers for the Love and Support Team, I can’t wait to apply to join it.
To begin with, I’m patient and caring, which helps me communicate well with those in need. With this good quality, I can not only assist them with daily tasks like buying groceries, but also read books or share interesting stories to cheer them up. Besides, having learned basic sign language last year, I can communicate more smoothly with hearing-impaired people.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration. I truly hope to join the team to make a difference in our community.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I said gently and quietly, “No one can change your mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts.” He sat still with a deep breath. “You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here”, I added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling out of his eyes and expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the cross-country run. His coach heard what David said and gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the runway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a brain disease. David insisted on running as if he had forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn’t take long before he picked himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. “Come on! You can make it! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone’s joy, he reached the final line and ranked the 20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make something unusual happen finally.
