My new neighbors are a foreign family. The parents are both English teachers, and their son, John, is a student. They asked me whether I would like to teach John some Chinese so that he could communicate with others better, and I said yes.
At first, I thought it would be a piece of cake, so I didn’t really prepare for it in advance. However, it was easier said than done. When I started teaching John, I came to know that there was so much culture and history in our language. Why are there four tons Chinese? Who invented Chinese characters? How come some Chinese characters look like the things they stand for but some don’t?
I came home and was quite ashamed (羞愧的) as I didn’t know the answers to those questions. I always thought as a Chinese person, teaching Chinese was easy, but it turned out that it was not. The Chinese language is rich in culture. What we learned about Chinese in school was just a small art of it.
This “job” is really a great learning experience for me. I know that I need a deeper understanding of my own language, so that one day I’ll be able to share more about the Chinese language with foreigners.

The world has many differences. Here are two examples.
English is spoken in many countries, but people use it in different ways. Let’s look at some interesting examples.
In the United States, people often say “bathroom” when they mean “washroom”. However, in the UK, “bathroom” usually means a room with a bath. This small difference can sometimes cause confusion (困惑) for visitors.
Pronunciation is also different. For example, Australians pronounce the word “dance” differently from Americans. While Americans say it with a short “a” sound, Australians use a longer “a”. Similarly, British English and American English have different ways of spelling words like “colour” (British) and “color” (American).
In recent years, English has developed new words and phrases. For example, “thumbs-up” is widely understood as a sign of approval (赞许) in China. However, in some cultures, it might be rude to use this gesture (手势).
Greetings are another area of difference. In European countries like Italy, people often kiss each other on the cheek. In Japan, bowing politely is more common to greet people.
1.In the UK, what does the word “bathroom” usually mean?
2.How do Australians pronounce the word “dance”?
3.In China, what does “thumbs-up” stand for?
4.In which country do people often kiss each other on the cheek when greeting?
5.In Japan, how do people usually greet each other?
Give an example of a greeting way in other countries. (答案须与文中例子不同)

First, try to choose one that sounds similar to your real name. Why? Because you will hear that name and answer it quickly. For example, if “Li Wei” is your name, you can choose “Lee” as your English name.

George is a 15-year-old middle school student. He didn’t use to be interested in English. He noticed that his grammar was a serious problem. He couldn’t understand the sentences because of the grammar. To fix this, he created a study plan to improve his grammar.
He started by reviewing the basic grammar rules. He realized that he was poor in grammar because he never really understood the rules. For example, he would often mix up verb tenses (时态). To deal with this, he spent a few weeks just going over the basics. It was a little boring at first, but it was useful.
Whenever he made a mistake, he would write it down along with the correct usage (用法). He remembered one time, he kept confusing (混淆) the past perfect tense with the simple past. Writing out the differences and practicing sentences in his diary helped him understand the rules.
After a long time of hard work, George has made great progress in grammar. Now he has a better understanding of English grammar. He can understand different tenses, parts of speech and sentence patterns better. He can also find out and correct the mistakes easily. He likes English a lot now and he is sure that he will get better at English.
In fact, to get better at anything, one needs to find what one is not good at and deal with it head-on (正面的). Remember, challenges are also chances. They are chances for you to get better.
1.Why couldn’t George understand the sentences?
2.Was it useful for George to review the grammar rules?

How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this. Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.
“Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language.” said Dr. Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulty learning foreign languages. On his blog, Dr. Ludke writes, “A listen-and-repeat method can support foreign language learning, and open the door for future research in this area.”
Many language teachers know the value of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington D.C. depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids usually we use English songs but teach them the Chinese lyrics. So it’s easy for them to start because they know the music. Not only does it work, but it is fun for the kids.” “Sometimes, I think if I were taught English that way, maybe I would speak English much better than now,” Hua Zhuying adds.
Our brain likes music, especially for remembering, because the brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy (朗朗上口的) and meaningful way. So, if you’re still struggling in learning a language, why not try singing it out?
1.According to the passage, what is the best way to remember a foreign language?
2.In Ludke’s opinion, who might benefit (受益) from this new way of learning by singing?
3.Have scientists done a lot of researches on listen-and-repeat method in language learning?
4.How does Hua Zhuying teach kids to learn Chinese?
5.Why is music helpful for language learning?

A 15-second video of a security guard (保安) broadcasting in two languages went hot recently. It happens at the Heihu Spring scenic area in Jinan, Shandong Province. With a light local accent (口音), he said both in Mandarin and English “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Heihu Spring scenic area” and “May you have a wonderful time here”. Tourists were amazed at the broadcast and praised his efforts.
The 56-year-old guard, Zhang Shoujun, is from Yilan County, Heilongjiang Province. Zhang has been interested in English since middle school and he learned it very well. What’s more, he worked as an English teacher in a junior high school from 1987 to 1993. He lives and works in Shandong Province at the moment. Zhang is surprised by the attention he received online, and feels proud to be able to offer help to foreign tourists.
Although Zhang says he is just a security guard, his lifelong learning attitude(态度) is certainly worthy of learning. He spends lots of time in learning English and tries his best to do well in his job. “I will continue to provide broadcasts in two languages. I hope to show all the beauty of Jinan and its people to the tourists,” said Zhang.
1.What is the 15-second video about in the passage?
2.What were the tourists at the Heihu Spring scenic area amazed by?

On February 21 each year, UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) holds an International Mother Language Day (IMLD). The event is to help people to pay attention to the disappearance of the world’s languages. Many of them are disappearing each year. UNESCO sees this as a terrible fact.
What happens when a language dies out? Something great is lost—not just sounds and marks but the way that people understand the world and communicate with each other. They keep different cultures and traditions through languages. Kill a language and all these are killed too.
Through IMLD, more and more people gradually realize the terrible situation and try to stop it. Many upload (上传) texts, audios (音频) and videos on the website of Google’s 2018 Endangered Languages Project to spread ways of communication. Also, the Myaamia Project makes efforts to save the language of the Miami tribes ( ßi&) by encouraging people to study and communicate with it.
These activities have one thing in common—they give life to those endangered languages. People who work to keep languages alive are not limited to the past. Many young people design apps and use social media to support their activities. They “share the word” to save the world.
So, while the problem of disappearing languages remains a very serious one, there is hope. We all have a special feeling of our mother language. This is why we should remember the wise words of late president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela: “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
1.When is the International Mother Language Day held every year?
2.How do people keep different cultures and traditions?
3.What do the activities like the Myaamia Project have in common?
4.Why should we remember the wise words of Nelson Mandela?
5.Do you want to celebrate the International Mother Language Day? Why or why not?

Learning a Foreign Language
There are many aspects (方面) to language learning, such as how words are said, which words are chosen and what forms of words are used. All of these aspects together can make learning a foreign language difficult. But some advice might make learning a new language easier and more fun.
Don’t worry too much about pronouncing words the wrong way.
Pronunciation is important, of course. It helps listeners to understand what someone says more clearly. But the most important step in learning a new language is to practice speaking it. As for learning any new skill, practice makes perfect. And most of the time, the native (本地的) speaker is glad to help improve the pronunciation of the words.
Don’t be afraid to guess the meaning of what someone says.
There are tens of thousands of words in English. It is impossible to know all of them. You may use context (上下文) and body language to guess what others say. For example, when a person says “Hola” and waves his hand, one might guess that the person is giving a greeting. Whether it means “Hello” or “Good morning”, it is not necessarily important at that moment to know the exact meaning.
Don’t give up.
Learning a new language or skill always takes time. Many will give up learning because it is too hard or boring. Some may think that other people will make fun of them for making mistakes. But it’s OK to make mistakes. Nobody is perfect, after all. Don’t lose hope and keep trying.
In the end, learning a new language can be difficult, but remember that it can give great advantages. Learning a language doesn’t just mean the ability to speak in that different language. Don’t forget that learning a language can also include making new friends and experiencing new cultures!
1.What is the most important step in learning a new language?
2.How do you guess the meaning of what someone says?
3.Why is it OK to make mistakes when learning a new language?
4.Is learning a foreign language important? Why or why not?
Musk, the richest man in the world, is good at Chinese. When he was at a meeting on global food crisis(危机), Musk quoted(引述)Cao Zhi’s seven-step poem, “ Pods burned to cook peas, Peas weep in the pot, Grown from same root, Why boil us so hot? ”
Besides Musk, it’s amazing to know that an Italian astronaut working on the International Space Station wrote on her social media, “The universe is so big and has so much stuff(事物)to watch, and it’s great to see and know and drink.”
Before she came to China, she had learned to speak Chinese. She quoted the Preface to the Works of Lanting《兰亭集序》because she had a good friend who was a Sinologist(汉学家). Before the flight, her Sinologist friend suggested that she quote this line from the Preface to the Lanting Collection.
Chinese belongs to an elite(精英的)culture in European and American countries. Ordinary people in Europe and America have no interest in Chinese. They think Chinese is really too difficult for them to learn. However, in the elite circles of Europe and America, it is different. No matter in business and space, or science research. Not only the European astronauts have to learn Chinese, but also the workers of the Saudi Arabian who work closely with China. Even American astronauts need to learn Chinese ahead of time(提前).
More and more European and American elites start to learn Chinese because the future of China’s global influence will be bigger and bigger. They plan ahead and plan ahead for their children.
Learning Chinese is necessary if astronauts from around the world want to work on China’s space station. This is why the Italian astronaut learned Chinese.
The goal of China’s plan to land on the moon is to build a permanent base(永久基地) on the moon. Any astronaut needs to learn at least two languages, either in an American or Chinese spaceship. There is no third choice in the future. Chinese is directly connected to the career and future. Therefore, the elite of Europe and America think they really can’t fit the situation if they do not learn Chinese.
1.What did Musk quote when he was at a meeting on global food crisis?
2.Who advised the Italian astronaut quote the line from the Preface to the Lanting Collection?
3.Why do ordinary people in Europe and America have no interest in Chinese?
4.Why do more and more European and American elites start to learn Chinese?
5.How many languages does the astronauts need to learn?
6.What do you think Chinese will be like in the future? Why?

重难语篇提升练

The goal of China’s plan to land on the moon is to build a permanent base(永久基地) on the moon. Any astronaut needs to learn at least two languages, either in an American or Chinese spaceship.
