One of the best memories I have from my childhood is the time my mother read to me. When it was cold outside, we sat on the couch late at night with the fire blazing in the fireplace. I leaned against her shoulder and watched the lines on her face disappear as she used her voice to imitate the characters in the book.
It could have been her time to relax after taking care of children and a husband all day, but instead, she would smile when I slipped out of my bed and came tiptoeing back into the living room after everyone else was asleep. Being the youngest of 11 children, sometimes, it was easy to get lost in the crowd, and I cherished those moments; I could sit close to her and know it was just my time.
My mother’s lines would melt away during those moments because she wasn't thinking about cooking, cleaning, disciplining, or paying the bills. When she read Cinderella to me, she would make me feel the transition from ashes to riches because she was using her imagination to feel it, too.
When I became a busy parent with my children, I understood my mother’s sacrifices for sharing that late-night story time with me. But, somehow, I think she needed it as much as I did.
Years later, I had the opportunity to visit an elementary school recently to read to the first-grade class for National Children’s book week. Besides helping a child develop a love for reading, it is a beautiful way to be close to your children and instills a sense of security they never forget. It’s when the parent focuses on the child without distractions, and a child can feel that. I did. For a moment, we aren’t adults with all the answers and rules, but someone lost in a story with our children.
Reading and letting our imagination travel is not just for children, either. When I am at my busiest and feel the most stressed in my life, I find a book and let myself get lost for a while. The difference between reading a book, hanging out on your iPad, or lounging in front of the television to relax is that when you read a book, the story can be what you imagine it to be, and you can learn as fast or as slow as you want to. I like that.
4. What impressed the author most?
A. His mother read to him during his childhood.
B. Mom warmed him with the fire in the fireplace.
C. They sat on the couch enjoying the TV series.
D. He imitated the characters in the book.
5. What made the author have contradictory feelings?
A. He slipped out of his bed and tiptoed to mum.
B. He did everything when others were asleep.
C. He was always lost in the crowd.
D. He stole mum’s time to relax but enjoyed it.
6. Which is the benefit of reading together according to the passage?
A. It helps kids perform well in elementary school.
B. It helps kids form a sense of security.
C. It helps parents focus on reading without distractions.
D. It helps adults find answers and rules.
7. What is the passage mainly aimed at?
A. Calling for kids to read more classical literature.
B. Promoting the idea of parent-child reading.
C. Advertising for National Children’s book week.
D. Relieving everyday stress.

What is your ideal garden? Perhaps you’re thinking of beautiful flowers, inviting paths and insects eating the plants. While it sounds odd, insects are integral to holistic gardening, a gardening method that uses native plants to better our local ecosystems.
“As we think about garden design, we often start with the color palette, the amount of sunlight and the soil conditions,” says Mark Konlock, Director of Horticulture at Green Bay Botanical Gardens. “The holistic approach takes those concepts and adds another layer to provide value for insects and other parts of the ecosystem.” This begins with choosing plants that have evolved in your local conditions.
“With natives, you’re able to reduce the amount of upkeep and have plants that stand extreme conditions, like drought or wet soils,” he explains. “Once those plants are established, you don’t have to water them, fertilize them or use pesticides.” Looking at the big picture, those benefits overflow into the environment. An example is plants that like wet soil; they can be added to a rain garden to filter (过滤) the groundwater and reduce runoff. And when you don’t use pesticides in the garden, you can focus on letting insects grow.
Of course, tolerating all kinds of insects takes some effort. “We’re used to avoiding insect damage in our gardens, so it takes a bit of retraining our minds to help us see the value of letting those insects eat the plants,” Mark says. Chewing insects serve as prey for other members of the ecosystem, such as birds, and in many species, those that survive the larval stage develop into pollinators (授粉者) that we like to see. As pollinators continue losing habitat, it becomes more vital to assist them, as they’re responsible for one-third of our food supply.
8. What is an advantage of holistic gardening?
A. It can make plants more inviting. B. It can enhance local ecosystems.
C. It can popularize gardening. D. It can control the reproduction of insects.
9. What does the underlined word “upkeep” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Design. B. Improvement. C. Decoration. D. Maintenance.
10. What do we know about native plants from the text?
A. They are beneficial to the environment.
B. They are sensitive to various pesticides.
C. They can help to filter the drinking water.
D. They need more light compared to foreign plants.
11. What message does the last paragraph mainly convey?
A. Birds are responsible for our food supply.
B. Pollinators face threats of losing their habitats.
C. People should avoid insect damage in gardens.
D. Insects play an important role in the food chain.

It’s a race against time, as generations of cultural heritage conservators at the Dunhuang Academy make a great effort to protect the artistic charm of the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, despite erosion (侵蚀) by sand and wind.
The team is dedicated to protecting the 45, 000 square meters of murals (壁画) and more than 2, 400 painted sculptures of the 735 caves of the site, the construction of which spans about a thousand years, from the 4th century to the 14th century. The cultural relics are the product of the cultural exchanges that took place over centuries on the ancient Silk Road. “Our work, repairing murals and painted sculptures, is to better preserve the caves, which promotes the great Dunhuang spirit of inclusiveness (包容) to the world and inspires modern people,” says Su Bomin, director of the Dunhuang Academy.
Commonly seen “diseases” affecting the murals include cracking and flaking (剥落), as well as erosion that is caused by changes in temperature and humidity of the caves, and the deposition of salts. To restore (修复) a mural requires an all-rounder. Restorers should know painting, master the skills of a mason (石匠) and have some knowledge of chemistry and physics, to be able to recognize the problems and their corresponding (相应的) causes and deliver a solution. They must also select proper materials and tools, and conduct experiments, before formally carrying out the restoration and evaluating the effect afterward.
The restoration (修复) should respect the original work and aim to maintain the status quo (现状) of the murals rather than repainting them. When the restorers find some parts of murals missing or fading away, they never repaint them to create a “perfect” appearance in restoration. “Cultural relics are witnesses of history,” explains Su. “When you pursue the so-called intact (完好无损的) look for artistic reasons, you will lose their key meaning.”
Cave conservation is about continuously solving problems. “It needs a long-term research to better preserve the caves, over a much wider time span that goes beyond our lifetimes,” Su says. But at least, they can keep the existing look of the murals for as long as possible.
12. What is the main purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To show the popularity of Dunhuang murals.
B. To explain the history of the ancient Silk Road.
C. To stress the significance of the restoration work.
D. To present the ways of protecting cultural heritage.
13. Which of the following best describes the restoration work?
A. Creative. B. Well-paid. C. Interesting. D. Demanding.
14. What should restoring murals focus on according to paragraph 4?
A. Spotting the faded murals in time.
B. Fixing the missing parts of murals.
C. Making preservation(保护) of the murals as they are.
D. Repainting to perfect the appearance of murals.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Artistic Charm of Mural Paintings.
B. The Mural Restoration in the Mogao Caves.
C. The Successful Experiment on Cave Conservation.
D. The Role of the Dunhuang Spirit in Chinese Culture.

Neha was very upset because her little sister spilled water on her science project. This was not the first time that her sister had damaged her schoolwork. So, Neha asked her parents to buy her a study table with drawers where she could safely keep her books.
Neha's parents could not afford to buy a brand new table. However, they agreed to buy her a second-hand table. One day after school, Neha's mother took her to a second-hand furniture store, so that she could buy a table of her choice. Neha accidentally opened a drawer in an old black table. And, guess what she found? A small transparent (透明的) plastic bag with some rupee (卢比) notes inside.
“Am I the luckiest twelve-year-old? My birthday is coming up soon. With this money, I can buy myself a great many presents ... maybe a bicycle, books, dresses ... and maybe I can even buy things for my family,” Neha thought. She was overcome with greed (贪婪) and quickly pushed the bag to the back of the drawer.
She went to her mother and told her that she wanted to buy that black table. Neha's mother told her that the table looked too old and she should look for something better. “No! I like this one,” Neha insisted. She was feeling scared inside but her greed made her lie.
Neha could not wait until everybody left after the table was organized in her room. She
locked the room and quickly opened the drawer and took out the plastic bag with the rupee notes inside. There was a note in the money bag. It seemed that some old lady was saving the money for her children and grandchildren. Neha began counting the money. She could hear her heart beat louder and louder and finally she counted twelve thousand rupees.
But now, with all the money she had, she thought she would have to make up many lies in order to spend that money and would have to hide the money all the time.

【答案】4. A 5. D 6. B 7. B

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. D

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“While it sounds odd, insects are integral to holistic gardening, a gardening method that uses native plants to better our local ecosystems.(虽然这听起来很奇怪,但昆虫是整体园艺的组成部分,整体园艺是一种利用本地植物来改善我们当地生态系统的园艺方法)”可知,整体园艺法利用本地植物来改善我们当地的生态系统,这是它的优势。故选B项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中““With natives, you’re able to reduce the amount of upkeep and have plants that stand extreme conditions, like drought or wet soils,” he explains. “Once those plants are established, you don’t have to water them, fertilize them or use pesticides.”(他解释说:“种植本地植物,你就可以减少upkeep工作量,有能适应极端环境的植物,比如干旱或潮湿的土壤。一旦这些植物种植好,你就不需要给它们浇水、施肥或使用杀虫剂。”)”可知,本地植物只要种植好,就不需要给它们浇水、施肥或使用杀虫剂,可以减少维护工作量。由此推知,划线词upkeep意为“维护,保养”,与D项“Maintenance”意思相近。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Once those plants are established, you don’t have to water them, fertilize them or use pesticides.(一旦这些植物种植好,你就不需要给它们浇水、施肥或使用杀虫剂)”和“Looking at the big picture, those benefits overflow into the environment. An example is plants that like wet soil; they can be added to a rain garden to filter (过滤) the groundwater and reduce runoff. And when you don’t use pesticides in the garden, you can focus on letting insects grow.(从宏观视角看,这些益处最终将惠及整个生态环境。以喜湿植物为例,将其引入雨水花园能过滤地下水、减少径流。当你不在花园里使用杀虫剂时,实际上是在为昆虫创造繁衍生息的空间)”可知,本地植物对环境有益。故选A项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“Chewing insects serve as prey for other members of the ecosystem, such as birds, and in many species, those that survive the larval stage develop into pollinators (授粉者) that we like to see. It’s a race against time, as generations of cultural heritage conservators at the Dunhuang Academy make a great effort to protect the artistic charm of the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, despite erosion (侵蚀) by sand and wind.
The team is dedicated to protecting the 45 000 square meters of murals (壁画) and more than 2, 400 painted sculptures of the 735 caves of the site, the construction of which spans about a thousand years, from the 4th century to the 14th century.
C Making preservation(保护) of the murals as they are.

But at least, they can keep the existing look of the murals for as long as possible.

【答案】One possible version:
With her heart still racing, Neha gathered the strength to face up to what she had done. She called her parents into her room, her eyes filled with determination. As they entered, she handed them the plastic bag filled with the unexpected treasure. “Mom, Dad, I found this, but I know it’s not mine,” she said, her voice steady. “Let’s return it and find the rightful owners. I don’t want to keep something that doesn’t belong to me.” Her parents exchanged a look of pride and immediately agreed. They wrapped their arms around Neha, offering words of encouragement.
Together, the three of them went back to the store, where the shop owner offered to help. They discovered that the money belonged to an elderly woman who had sold the old black table to the store but forgot to take out the bag in the drawer. So they immediately contacted with the woman and returned the money. Seeing the genuine happiness she had brought to the woman’s life, Neha finally let out a sigh of relief. “This birthday,” she thought, “I’ve gained something more valuable than any gift — the restoration of my honesty.”
