Graduation came early for the Rocky Mountain Prep elementary school. However, the ones wearing graduation gowns weren’t the students, but their parents. On Monday, 21 parents and caregivers in this school celebrated the end of a five-week literacy training program. Now, the graduates will be employed full-time at the Rocky Mountain Prep elementary school to help little ones learn to read.
“This is a pilot program about improving literacy,” said Alicia Lorio, a teacher at Rocky Mountain Prep. Only 36% of Colorado fourth-graders tested as proficient in reading. And nationwide, only 31% of students were proficient readers, according to the Nation’s Report Card published last month.
The Rocky Mountain Prep put out a call for full-time tutors from the community who would be paid around $ 40,000 per year after training in the science of reading, phonics instruction and behavior management. The tutors will provide individualized education for students in need. “It’s powerful for students to see their family coming in and giving them individualized attention,” Lorio said.
Gabriel Martinez was a stay-at-home dad before spotting the call for tutors. He was in search of a job with hours that still let him watch his children. He figured there was no better solution than working at his kids’ school. Martinez said he is excited to become a reliable, active adult in students’ lives. “You can make a very positive impact, just showing kids you care,” Martinez said.
The tutoring starts in a few weeks. Lorio hopes the program will include math tutoring and become long-lasting. Right now, the tutors’ salaries are funded by the public charter school, but Lorio is investigating money that could keep the program going into the future. “I hope we can live on our mission,” Lorio said.

Many young people in China today have embraced (欣然接受) a new trend called “lying down travel”, which involves taking a more relaxing way to explore new places. Compared with the popular tourist attractions (旅游景点), some small ones with fewer people and beautiful views are becoming more and more popular. Instead of rushing from one tourist attraction to another, they prefer to take their time and enjoy the local culture.
A travel trend report from China regards “lying down travel” as the top fourth travel trend. The latest report’s description of the travel style is simple: “Change the place, change your mood and just lie down to relax.” Such a mode of travel — with no strategy or destination — allows travelers to fully relax, be comfortable and not be annoyed by excessive travel planning or busyness.
Some social media users have praised “lying down travel”, with some stating that they are growing more and more fond of it. Many are also using the term to describe travel destinations, referring to possible destinations as “lying flat towns” or “lying flat islands”. A 24-year-old net citizen known as “Tudou” said that “lying down travel” had allowed her to realize that one does not need to spend money in order to gain happiness. Tudou, who enjoys lying in different parks every weekend to experience nature, said: “Besides the cost of picnic mats (垫子) and food, lying in the park has no other costs. It’s simply making full use of the city’s natural environment.” Even without a clear purpose, “you can see a lot of beautiful places and hear a lot of different conversations, which feels very interesting,” she added.
This newfound enjoyment points to a change in traditional priorities (优先事项) and a desire for meaningful experiences in all parts of people’s lives. As the Labour Day Travel Trend Report reads, “‘Lying down travel’ is actually a healthy hobby of life.”

I have just arrived in a country where I don’t know the language, where I have no family roots and where I find myself all alone. It may sound frightening. But let me tell you a little secret: it is not.
When you travel abroad by yourself for whatever reason—exchange program, internship, volunteering, or simply as a tourist—a new and fascinating world will open up for you. A world you would have never been able to see if you had just stayed at home.
People from a different country are not aliens. They are simply people like you who happened to be born in another region. They have pretty much the same wishes and worries as people from your own country.
I know that you see a lot of news on TV saying terrible things people do all the time. Your family may have spent a great deal of time telling you not to trust strangers. However, when you travel alone you will realize that people are just as good as you. Everyone is just leading their lives, working, studying and having a good time with their friends. Most people will be happy to help you and get to know you.
Maybe in the past when you would need months to travel from one place to another, traveling could be expensive. Nowadays, the world is just so connected that it is perfectly possible to find cheap flights, accommodation for all budgets and cheap and quality food.
You will get lost, but it’s fine! I can’t even count how many times I didn’t know where I was going or how to find the right direction. Everything looks great on Google maps, but sometimes your phone will die or your data will end. Just calm down. Go to a store or stop someone in the street and ask! Or simply walk around and be curious.
1.The author writes about his own experience in paragraph 1 to ________.

3.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.most people travel abroad alone as tourists
B.travelling abroad is better than travelling at home
C.it’s cheaper and easier to travel abroad now than in the past
D.people from a different country are simply people like you

In Finland, it’s a basic duty for the government to provide the public with sporting possibilities. That thinking started in the 1970s, when the government built gyms in even the smallest towns. Now, there are about 30,000 sports facilities across the country. Here you can just step out of your door and do sports.
Finns do just that. Half of women and a third of men bike to work. About a fifth of the country belongs to fitness clubs. Some people even play sports at work. For example, every Wednesday morning, a group of scientists at the University of Jyväskylä leave their desks to play “futsal”, an indoor form of soccer, in a gym across the street. It’s one of the most popular team sports in the country. A nearby chocolate factory has a gym and offers aerobics classes like boxing and badminton.
“Employers started to encourage sports participation (参与) about a century ago in the forestry industry,” says Hanna Vehmas, a sports scientist at the University of Jyväskylä. “Nowadays, 90% of employers support their employees’ physical events in some way. Each year, they spend about $220 per employee on average for hosting physical events.”
“We have a lot of research showing that spending money on employees’ well-being will bring back as much as six times the money spent,” says Vehmas. “Because healthy employees do better work. They also don’t have as many sick days. And staying fit, especially by playing sports together, could help build company loyalty (忠诚) which actually even makes more sense.”

A.To show the popularity of a unique sport. B.To describe the process of an experiment.

C.About 80 years ago. D.About 100 years ago.
3.What does Hanna Vehmas say about the effort for employees’ physical well-being?
A.It is a waste of money. B.It brings in various benefits.
C.It takes too much time. D.It cuts workers' productivity.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.How Can Finns Make Sports Part of Everyday Life?

D.How Can Employers in Finland Be Encouraged to Spend on Sports?

First it’s the calm look on her face. Then people notice her hair clip (发夹). Many things about Huang Yuting turn heads.
1 The shooting star is just really good at her sport. At the recent ISSF World Cup Final (国际射联射击世界杯总决赛), she led the women’s 10m air rifle (女子10米气步枪) competition from start to finish. 2 Huang put on great performances at the 2024 Olympic Games and the 2022 Asian Games, too.
Her calmness in front of the target may easily fool us, but Huang is only 18 years old. She grew up in an ordinary family in Taizhou, Zhejiang. 3 She also studied hard in school.
The turning point came one day in 2016. Huang’s school had some visitors. Those were coaches from a local sports school. They were looking for young talents. They asked the kids to each build a pyramid (金字塔) out of bullet shells (弹壳). 4 But Huang still made it. She was chosen to train as a shooter.
Huang tried her best to balance her new “hobby” with her schoolwork. Every day after school, she practiced shooting for an hour. Then, she went home to do her homework. After only one year of training, Huang began winning shooting competitions. 5
As a young shooter and student, Huang has many more competitions and tests ahead. But with her hard work and talent, she’ll surely continue to hit the bullseye (靶心) — both on and off the shooting range.

For example, if Paris is too expensive, try Montreal. 2 Similarly, visiting New York’s Finger Lakes instead of Napa Valley saves money on hotels and wine tastings. Focus on experiences, not just the destination!
3
Travel prices vary by season. Flying during off-peak times, like winter, can save money. For example, visiting Santorini in winter saved one family $500 per person compared to summer prices. Also, avoid flying on weekends—Sundays and Mondays are pricier because of business travelers. Being flexible with dates helps you save!
Assuming vacation rentals are cheaper
4 Actually, prices for vacation rentals like Airbnb or VRBO have risen, sometimes costing more than hotels. Budget hotels and hostels can be better deals. Some hostels even have game rooms for kids. Another option is house-sitting or swapping—you can stay for free by caring for someone’s home.
Staying in the city center
Staying in busy tourist areas like Times Square or Hollywood can cost more. Instead, try neighborhoods outside the city center. In New York, dining in the Bronx costs less than in Manhattan. In Paris, visiting St. Ouen’s antique markets is free and fun. Avoiding the city center saves money and offers authentic experiences!
Remember, travel is about enjoying new places, not matching fancy social media posts. 5 By doing so, your wallet will surely thank you!
A.Traveling with family.
B.Booking specific dates.
C.Travel smarter, not harder.
D.Comparison is the thief of joy.

I studied very late at night when I met with difficult problems. Most of all, I came to understand the importance of taking notes in class. As a result, I did better in some tests.
About three months later, another important test came at the end of the term. This time, I stood out not only in my class but also in the grade. From then on, I have tried to do my best when I do something because I know if I want something, I should work hard for it.

A.most people travel abroad alone as tourists
B.travelling abroad is better than travelling at home
C.it’s cheaper and easier to travel abroad now than in the past
D.people from a different country are simply people like you
Rueben Mayes was born and raised in a farming community in Saskatchewan, Canada, where football was not an important part of life. However, Mayes was naturally drawn to the sport, and his talent was obvious from an early age. His passion (激情) for football only grew stronger as he played for the High School under the guidance of coach Don Hodgins, who recognized Mayes’ potential and took a personal interest in his development.
Hodgins’ support for Mayes went far beyond the typical role of a high school coach. He saw something special in Mayes and wanted to ensure that he had every opportunity to succeed in the sport. Hodgins helped Mayes get a place in a football camp in the U.S., which proved to be a turning point for the young sportsman.
1.Why are the scientists at the University of Jyväskylä mentioned in paragraph 2?

A.How Can Finns Make Sports Part of Everyday Life?
B.Why Are There So Many Sports Facilities Across Finland?
C.Why Has Finland Become the Healthiest Country in the World?
D.How Can Employers in Finland Be Encouraged to Spend on Sports?
Maya Merhige is making her major waves in swimming. She is now the third-youngest person to complete an athletic challenge known as the Triple Crown. At the age of 16, she swam 23 miles across the English Channel in the UK with a time of 11 hours, 39 minutes.
Merhige had already completed the other two Triple Crown swims. At age 14, with a time of 10 hours, 48 minutes, she became the youngest female to swim the 20-mile Catalina Channel in California. The next year, she completed the 20 Bridges swim in New York City, a distance of 28.5 miles, in 8 hours, 43 minutes.
Open-water swimming became her passion at age 9 when she got involved with Swim Across America, a nonprofit organization that funds cancer research. “I’ve been feeling as I’ve gotten older that nearly everyone is touched by cancer, and it’s become more important for me to raise money for this cause,” Merhige, now 17, told The Week Junior. Since she started, she has raised more than $100,000.
One of her favorite swims was crossing the 28-mile Ka’iwi Channel in Hawaii. She swam it at age 15, making her the youngest person to do so. It took her more than 27 hours to complete it, and she faced strong winds and jellyfish.
Although the physical and mental challenges of her sport are difficult, Merhige says her greatest fear is not finishing a swim. Now she sets her sights on completing the Oceans Seven by 2029, and with her Triple Crown swims, she has four more to go. As she considers the journey ahead, Merhige said it helps to “constantly remind myself to stay in the moment.”

The Money-Draining Mistakes Travelers Make
Planning a low-cost trip? You don’t have to give up comfort or safety! Travel experts say we can have great trips without spending too much, only if you let go of the luxury (奢华的) travel posts you keep seeing on social media. 1
Chasing dream destinations
Going to your dream place might empty your wallet. Instead, find cheaper places to visit.
E.A flight from New York to Paris costs more, than one to Montreal.
F.Avoid the following common mistakes to save money and still enjoy your trip!
G.Travelers often assume that a vacation rental will be more affordable than a hotel.

Below are some pieces of advice to follow as you go through high school so that you can get the most out of your experience.
The first year of high school can be challenging. Maybe your grades aren’t as good as you’d like, or maybe you don’t take part in as many activities as you have hoped. 2 Try to think about your strengths and weaknesses and set some goals for the coming year. You will grow rapidly each year of high school.
3 When you have adapted to the level of the course, you should push yourself by choosing levels that are more difficult in your school’s courses. All of the skills you build upon this habit provide an important foundation (基础) for your life in the following years.
In high school, you may find that you have more chances than you did in middle school. If you find that these possibilities are offered to you, try out a new hobby, learn a new skill, or meet a new person in school. 4 The activities may introduce you to new opportunities for personal growth.
The growth during high school is not limited to the campus. Whenever possible, you should try to join in activities to support your community. This could be playing a community sport, doing community service, or caring for a family member. 5
A.So it’s okay if it doesn’t go perfectly.
B.What you choose to do is completely up to you.
C.This means making and sticking to study schedules.

Is studying day and night driving you crazy? Well, winter vacation will soon be arriving. However, for some of us, 1 a vacation can be a big headache. Where to go? What to eat and where to spend your evenings? How much will the trip cost? Will I 2 jet lag? If that is the case for you, we suggest you have a staycation.
Interested in knowing what a staycation is? Let’s start by 3 what it is. A staycation is basically taking a vacation in your own city. It’s a concept that emerged during the global financial crisis of 2008. While we may be better off now, staycations ended up 4 , with people today taking staycations not only in order to save money, but because they actually enjoy doing so.
The main 5 of a staycation is to see more of your own city. The trick to a successful staycation is to act like it is a(n) 6 vacation. You wouldn’t laze around and watch TV in your hotel room in Paris, would you? 7 , get out and explore your own city as if it were Paris. 8 all the popular attractions, go to events you’ve just read about in your city’s newspapers and follow a different itinerary (行程) for each day.
The other secret to a successful staycation is to really “be” on vacation. Don’t be tempted to do anything that you would 9 do. Get your camera out and take a walking tour of an area completely 10 to you. Put your smartphone away and don’t let messages crowd your mind at any time. 五、书面表达
1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was born into a very close family. It was just my parents and me. Over the years I’ve noticed how well my parents manage to look after their health and how healthy they are. I had never bothered to follow their example or been that curious about the secret of their good health. I never realized what a great resource they could be.
I would look at them both, so slim, strong and healthy — much more so than me — and think, how will I ever get to be like them? I’m constantly impressed by their toughness. They have never taken any sick days from work, unless they really need to. They don’t need to visit the doctor much. Their habits are deep-rooted and it works for them.
Part of their success is how efficiently they control what they eat. Their diet is extremely healthy and they stick to it. For breakfast, it’s porridge; lunch is salad or a wholemeal sandwich with butter, garlic, raw onion and black pepper. Dinner is boiled vegetables, or beans. Both of them grew up eating fresh, unprocessed food.
My dad is a bus driver, and my mum works part-time as a sales assistant. My dad started skipping at the age of six. He’s now a mini celebrity and admired by people worldwide with thousands of followers on social media. And my mum has won fitness competitions at the gym.
In this respect, I was the complete opposite. I hated fitness and was lazy and unfit. Last week I had a health scare; I found a lump (肿块) on my neck. After an examination, it turned out to be fatty tissue, which isn’t harmful but unless I lose weight, or I have surgery, it could get worse. My parents said to me: don’t get surgery, let us train you and you’ll feel much better. I wanted to take the easy option and have it removed. But I also thought, maybe this was an eye-opener and a wake-up call for me to start getting fit.

When the swim season began, my 11-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, and I cut a deal. She would go to practise three times a week, and I wouldn’t make her compete in swim meets.
Elizabeth does not like swim meets. She gets horribly nervous because she is afraid that she will do something wrong and let everyone down. She started to talk about quitting swimming, which broke my heart because she loves swimming. So I came up with the deal.
Recently, Elizabeth’s team announced a T-shirt relay (接力赛), which works like this: one person from each relay team puts on a T-shirt and a pair of socks and swims 50 meters. She takes off the clothes and puts them on the next person, who then swims 50 meters. This continues until everyone on the team has completed a lap.
It wasn’t exactly a meet, because instead of having individuals compete with each other, it would only involve team members. But Elizabeth thought it was. I told Elizabeth I really wanted her to go. She fought back angrily but finally agreed.
When the day for the T-shirt relay arrived, Elizabeth was nervous. She was chosen to swim the anchor leg (最后一棒). By the last leg, Elizabeth’s team had built up a narrow lead. Then it was Elizabeth’s turn to swim.
Approaching the halfway mark, she was still in the lead. Then somebody noticed that one of Elizabeth’s socks had fallen off and was floating in the pool. “She has to get that sock on before the end of the race,” a swimming official told Elizabeth’s team, “or you will be disqualified.”
Everybody on her team started shouting, “Elizabeth! Get the sock!” But she couldn’t hear them. Meanwhile, a girl in lane two was catching up with Elizabeth. Just then, a girl on my daughter’s team jumped in the pool, grabbed the sock, swam after Elizabeth and put it on her.

On a sunny weekend, Avery decided to hike in the nearby forest park. She loves outdoor adventures and convinced her careful friend Eva to join the trip. The two girls wore comfortable clothes and carried backpacks with snacks and water. They started their hike from the park entrance.
As they walked along the forest paths, they shared funny stories from school, happy and excited. The sunlight shone through the leaves, making beautiful patterns on the ground, and the birds sang lovely songs. Everything felt peaceful and wonderful.
They stopped by a small stream to rest and have a picnic, feeling the cool breeze (微风) and listening to the gentle flow of the water. They took pictures of the flowers and the trees, taking photos of the beauty of nature. Time passed quickly as they enjoyed the beautiful natural scenery.
They were addicted to the natural scenery so much that they forgot time. It started to get dark, but they didn’t return to the entrance. Although they were not lost, it was late. “We have to walk faster, Eva. There are no streetlights in the park,” said Avery. “I can’t agree with you more. Our phones will be out of power soon. We may be lost in that case,” said Eva. They walked faster to get back. Unfortunately, their phones were out of power before they returned to the entrance, so they couldn’t use the light and the map, which made them a little worried. But they remembered the way back and decided to follow it.
Hours passed, and it was completely dark. The park became quiet and a bit scary. The sounds in the forest at night made them nervous. Avery’s and Eva’s families started to worry because the girls didn’t come home on time. Avery’s mom called the park office to check if the girls were still in the park. The park staff quickly started a search to make sure the girls were safe.

The MP3 has become a new fashion on campus. I had long dreamed of owning a MP3. The more MP3 owners were on campus, the stronger my desire (渴望) became. Finally, during one of my monthly visits home, I begged my parents to let me buy one, “Dad, Mom, I ... I want to buy a MP3 ... , the one for …”
I swallowed (吞咽) the rest of my words. Did I really need to explain what a MP3 was? Surely everybody knew!
At first there was no response from my parents. But my little brother replied eagerly, “Me too!”
Then finally my dad spoke, “What! What is it for? This little stuff breaks down soon after you get it! It’s an absolutely useless expense (花费) …”
Then, I had an idea. When the summer vacation came, I lied to my parents that I couldn’t stay at home, because the school had supplementary (附加的) programs. As a result, I earned my money for a new MP3 through my part-time job.
I was at home the night before my new school when Mom came into my room. She sat on my bed, and patted me on the shoulder. Then she handed me a small box. “Take this. Don’t tell your father ... Now, study hard, okay?” she said softly.
“Mom, how did you ... ?” I asked.
“It’s from my own savings. Your father doesn’t know.” I sat alone for a long time with my new MP3, weeping (哭泣) silently.
When I went back to school, I decided to give up my part-time job so that I could study harder for my parents, for my dream. My motivation (动机) to study has never been so strong.

Jane was a 10-year-old girl with messy brown hair. She lived with her hardworking mom, a nurse who often came home late. Jane tried to do everything by herself but always seemed to forget something. Her strict science teacher, Mr. Jeff, often got angry with her for being unprepared.
“Late again, Jane!” Mr. Jeff shouted loudly one Monday morning as Jane rushed into class, her shoes untied and books falling from her arms. “Where’s your homework? Still unfinished?”
Jane’s face turned red. “I... I did finish it this time,” she said quietly, searching her bag. Her heart dropped when she pulled out a messy math paper instead. The class laughed.
That night, Jane sat in her room, remembering how embarrassed (尴尬的) she felt “I’ll prove I can do better,” she promised herself. She stayed up late organizing her school things: notes and a homework report, Jane’s mom, coming home late from her nursing job, noticed the extra effort Jane was putting into her schoolwork. She asked Jane to go to bed early. But Jane said. “I really need to do well on this homework. Mr. Jeff has been so strict, and I don’t want to disappoint (使失望) him again.” Her mom nodded, understanding the importance of Jane’s efforts. Finally, everything was ready. Jane set two alarms (闹铃).
Unluckily, the next morning the alarms didn’t ring, because Jane had set them wrongly. Her mom knocked on her door and said, “Jane! The school bus is coming soon!” In a hurry to eat breakfast, brush her teeth, and find her shoes, Jane completely forgot her schoolbag by the door.
When she reached the school gate, Jane suddenly stopped. Her hands were empty. “Oh no! My schoolbag!” she cried. She could already imagine Mr. Jeff’s angry face.
