When Bonnie grew up in the 1960s and 1970s, her mother Janice often volunteered to sew costumes for her daughter’s class plays — even for the whole class, staying up late to sew and knit. Then Janice suffered 40 small strokes (中风) and three serious ones. In 2017, she lost use of her right side and had to use a wheelchair. Two years ago, when Bonnie sold her mother’s house and moved to a smaller place, she found three unfinished knit sweaters while packing. She knew they were for Janice herself, Bonnie, and Bonnie’s daughter. Bonnie took the sweaters to a local knitting store, hoping to get them finished. The store workers told her about Loose Ends, an organization that connects people with unfinished crafts from ill or passed loved ones to volunteer finishers for free. Founded two years ago, it has nearly 30,000 volunteers who have finished about 3,500 projects. Loose Ends linked Bonnie with Anna Minmier, a knitter with 20 years of experience. Anna started working on the sweaters, her fingers moving skillfully as if dancing — a habit she’d had since she began knitting at 9. “Meeting Anna, all I could do was to hug her tightly,” Bonnie said, tears in her eyes. “This project is so special. I’d have paid a lot for it.” Anna spent months finishing the sweaters. She said she felt happy to be part of this story that connects generations, recalling her own grandmother, once a knitter, who stopped due to arthritis (关节炎). Janice passed away last September. When Bonnie holds the finished sweaters, she’ll hug the memories her mother started. As Loose Ends co-founder Jennifer Simonic said, “It’s more than kindness. These physical things let people hold their missing loved ones close — and that matters a lot.”. 4. What was Janice like according to paragraph 1? A. Caring and devoted. B. Patient and curious. C. Diligent and ambitious. D. Friendly and careful. 5. What do we know about Loose Ends from the passage? A. It mainly connects local stores with craft lovers. B. It has finished over 30,000 projects in two years. C. It helps people complete unfinished crafts without charge. D. It was founded to train young volunteers in knitting skills. 6. What can we infer from the passage? A. Anna could dance skillfully with her fingers at 9 years old. B. Anna’s grandmother gave up knitting due to serious strokes. C. Bonnie paid a large amount of money to get the sweater finished. D. The finished sweaters will serve as a reminder of Bonnie’s mother. 7. What would be the best title for the passage? A. A Daughter’s Love for Her Mother’s Sweaters. B. Anna’s Devotion in Finishing Bonnie’s Sweaters. C. Loose Ends: Connecting Crafters and Volunteers. D. Finishing Unfinished Knits, Keeping Memories Alive. A 5. C 6. D 7. 根据第一段“Bonnie Blumberg has always known her mother’s love for knitting(针织) felt natural. When Bonnie grew up in the 1960s and 1970s, her mother Janice often volunteered to sew costumes for her daughter’s class plays — even for the whole class, staying up late to sew and knit.(当Bonnie在20世纪60年代和70年代长大时,她的母亲Janice经常自愿为女儿班级的戏剧缝制服装——甚至为整个班级缝制,熬夜缝纫和编织。)” 故选A。 根据第三段“The store workers told her about Loose Ends, an organization that connects people with unfinished crafts from ill or passed loved ones to volunteer finishers for free. (店员向她介绍了Loose Ends,这是一个免费将病重或已故亲人的未完成手工艺品与志愿者完成者联系起来的组织。)”可知,Loose Ends组织的主要功能是帮助人们完成未完成的手工艺品,而且不收取任何费用。因此,选项C“It helps people complete unfinished crafts without charge.(它帮助人们免费完成未完成的手工艺品)”符合题意。 根据最后一段“When Bonnie holds the finished sweaters, she’ll hug the memories her mother started.(当Bonnie拿着织完的毛衣时,她会紧紧拥抱母亲开始的回忆。)” D“The finished sweaters will serve as a reminder of Bonnie’s mother.(完成的毛衣将成为Bonnie对母亲的回忆)”符合题意。 D。 C For many students, staying awake all night to study is common practice. According to Medical News Today, around 20 percent of students pull all-nighters at least once a month, and about 35 percent stay up past three in the morning once or more weekly. That being said, staying up all night to study is one of the worst things students can do for their grades. In October of 2022, two MIT professors found a relationship between sleep and test scores: the less students slept during the semester, the worse their scores. So, why is it that sleep is so important for test scores? In the last 20 years, scientists have found that sleep impacts more than just students’ ability to perform well; it improves their ability to learn, memorize, retain (保存), recall, and use their new knowledge to solve problems creatively, which contributes to better test scores. When learning facts and information, most of what we learn is temporarily stored in a region of the brain called the hippocampus (海马体). Some scientists believe that, like most storage centers, the hippocampus has limited storage capacity. This means, if the hippocampus is full, and we try to learn more information, we won’t be able to. In one study, a group of 44 participants underwent two sessions of learning, once at noon and again at 6:00 PM. Half of the group was allowed to nap (小睡) between sessions, while the other half took part in standard activities. The researchers found that the group that napped between learning sessions learned just as easily at 6:00 PM as they did at noon. The group that didn’t nap, however, experienced a significant decrease in learning ability. It’s no surprise that the MIT study previously mentioned revealed no improvement in scores for those who only guarantee good sleep the night before a big test. In fact, the MIT researchers concluded that if students want to see an improvement in their test scores, they have to guarantee good sleep during the entire learning process. 8. What did the two MIT professors find in 2022? A. Most students were lacking in sleep. B. Students were under too much pressure. C. Good sleep improved students’ memory. D. Insufficient sleep worsened students’ grades. 9. According to some scientists, what will happen if our hippocampus fills up? A. We’ll forget things easily. B. We’ll fail to learn new things. C. We’ll get ready to think creatively. D. We’ll activate other parts of our brain. 10. What may the MIT researchers advise students to do to improve their test scores? A. Study late before a test. B. Sleep as much as you can. C. Form good sleep habits. D. Focus on study during the daytime. 11. How does the author try to prove his point? A By offering research results. B. By providing experts’ views. C. By analyzing some theories. D. By sharing some experiences. D 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第二段中“In October of 2022, two MIT professors found a relationship between sleep and test scores: the less students slept during the semester, the worse their scores.(2022年10月,两位麻省理工学院的教授发现了睡眠和考试成绩之间的关系:学生在这学期睡眠越少,他们的成绩就越差)”可知,2022年,两位麻省理工学院的教授发现了睡眠不足会使学生的成绩变差。 根据第四段中“Some scientists believe that, like most storage centers, the hippocampus has limited storage capacity. This means, if the hippocampus is full, and we try to learn more information, we won’t be able to.(一些科学家认为,和大多数存储中心一样,海马体的存储容量有限。这意味着,如果海马体已满,而我们试图学习更多的信息,我们将无法做到)”可知,一些科学家认为,如果我们的海马体填满了,我们将无法学习新事物。故选B项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“In fact, the MIT researchers concluded that if students want to see an improvement in their test scores, they have to guarantee good sleep during the entire learning process.(事实上,麻省理工学院的研究人员得出结论,如果学生想看到他们的考试成绩有所提高,他们必须保证在整个学习过程中有良好的睡眠)”可知,麻省理工学院的研究人员认为,学生必须保证在整个学习过程中有良好的睡眠,即养成良好的睡眠习惯,才能看到考试成绩的提高。 根据第二段中“In October of 2022, two MIT professors found a relationship between sleep and test scores: The less students slept during the semester, the worse their scores.(2022年10月,两位麻省理工学院的教授发现了睡眠和考试成绩之间的关系:学生在这学期睡眠越少,他们的成绩就越差)”,第五段中“In one study, a group of 44 participants underwent two sessions of learning(在一项研究中,44名参与者进行了两次学习)”和最后一段中“It’s no surprise that the MIT study previously mentioned revealed no improvement in scores for those who only guarantee good sleep the night before a big test.(毫不奇怪,之前提到的麻省理工学院的研究显示,那些只在大考前一晚保证良好睡眠的人的成绩并没有提高)”可知,作者通过提供研究结果来证明他的观点。故选A项。 D One day I typed into ChatGPT all about my upset feelings and it instantly responded, offering a list of practical advice. Nowadays millions of people are already turning to Chat-GPT and specialist therapy (治疗) chatbots for convenient and inexpensive mental health support. Some experts say this is a boon. After all, AI, undisturbed by embarrassment and burnout, might be able to express empathy (同理心) more openly and tirelessly than humans. But others worry about the consequences of people seeking emotional support from machines that can only pretend to care. Some even wonder if the rise of so-called empathetic AI might change the way we interact with one another. Indeed, empathy is one of our species’ defining qualities, developing as it did in pace with social interaction. One recent analysis about empathy looked at 52 studies published between 1980and 2019, which shows that the empathiser must first be able to recognize how the other person is feeling. They must also be affected by those emotions and differentiate between themselves and the other person, grasping that the other person’s feelings aren’t their own while still being able to imagine their experience. On the first point, in recent years, AI-powered chatbots have made progress in their ability to read human emotions, most powered by large language models (LLMs) that work by predicting which words are most likely to appear together based on training data. In this way, LLMs like ChatGPT can seemingly identify our feelings and respond appropriately most of the time. But when it comes to the other criteria, AI still misses the mark in many ways. Empathy is interpersonal, with continued feedback helping to perfect the empathiser’s response, which also requires some degree of intuitive (直觉的) awareness of an individual and their situation. All of this helps to explain conversations like the ones I had with ChatGPT. At the end of the day, despite talking to multiple chat-bots online, I did what I knew I had to do all along: I picked up my phone and called a friend. 12. What does the underlined word “boon” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Trap. B. Prize. C. Blessing. D. Challenge. 13. What does the recent analysis show about empathy? A. It calls for clear communication. B. It starts with emotion identification. C. It rules out individual difference. D. It depends on rich imagination. 14. What can AI do according to Paragraph 4? A. Provide data-driven feedback. B. Recognize one’s real desire. C. Update large language models. D. Predict one’s behavior by intuition. 15. What does the author think of ChatGPT? A. Its development should be sped up. B. Its intelligence is winning more favor. C. Its application should be strictly managed. D. Its artificial kindness is no match for humans’. C 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第二段的“Some experts say this is a boon. After all, AI, undisturbed by embarrassment and burnout, might be able to express empathy (同理心) more openly and tirelessly than humans. 根据第三段的“One recent analysis about empathy looked at 52 studies published between 1980and 2019, which shows that the empathiser must first be able to recognize how the other person is feeling. (最近有一项关于同理心的分析,研究了1980年至2019年间发表的52项研究,结果表明,产生同理心的人首先必须能够识别出对方的感受。)”可知,关于同理心的最近分析表明,同理心的首要条件是能够识别另一个人的感受。故选B。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段的“On the first point, in recent years, AI-powered chatbots have made progress in their ability to read human emotions, most powered by large language models (LLMs) that work by predicting which words are most likely to appear together based on training data. In this way, LLMs like ChatGPT can seemingly identify our feelings and respond appropriately most of the time. 故选A。 根据第四段的“But when it comes to the other criteria, AI still misses the mark in many ways. Empathy is interpersonal, with continued feedback helping to perfect the empathiser’s response, which also requires some degree of intuitive (直觉的) awareness of an individual and their situation. (但在其他标准方面,人工智能在很多方面仍未达标。同理心是一种人际关系的体现,持续的反馈有助于完善产生同理心者的回应,这也需要对一个人及其处境有一定程度的直觉意识。)”以及最后一段的“At the end of the day, despite talking to multiple chat-bots online, I did what I knew I had to do all along: I picked up my phone and called a friend. Nearly every student gets nervous before a test at some point, especially if the exam is an important one. Mistakes are Learning Opportunities ______19______ Instead, remind yourself that it’s OK to make mistakes. A wrong answer on a test is an opportunity to understand where you need to fill in a gap in your knowledge or spend some extra time studying. _________20_________ Test taking anxiety is very real and should be taken seriously. Your guidance counselor or a therapist may be able to offer long-term strategies for coping with test taking anxiety. Talk with your parents or guardians about finding someone to help you cope. A. Seek Professional Help B. Listen to the Instructions C. It’s easy to get caught up in worrying about a bad grade. D. Then force yourself to say “I’m going to succeed” instead. E. This level of anxiety can be extremely difficult to cope with. F. The calming effect can be beneficial and worth a few minutes of test time. G. And it allows you to get into a positive state of mind before the test starts. E 17. F 18. D 19. C 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“For some students, however, test taking anxiety can be overwhelming. (然而,对一些学生来说,考试焦虑可能会难以承受。)”和下文“Fortunately, there are a few things you can do before and during a test to help cope with more severe stress and anxiety. (幸运的是,在测试之前和测试期间,你可以做一些事情来帮助应对更严重的压力和焦虑。)”可知,考前的焦虑让人难以承受,这种水平的焦虑让人难以处理。但是我们可以做一些事情来应对更严重的焦虑。设空处起承上启下的作用,只有E项“This level of anxiety can be extremely difficult to cope with. (这种程度的焦虑可能很难应对。)”符合题意。故选E项。 【17题详解】 根据前文“Take a minute or two before or even during a test to focus on your breathing, relax tense muscles, do a quick positive visualization, or stretch your limbs. (在测试前或在测试期间花一两分钟来关注你的呼吸,放松紧张的肌肉,做一个快速的积极的想象,或伸展你的四肢。)”可知,本段主要是让你在测试时花费一两分钟时间放松,这样做会有镇静效果。F选项“The calming effect can be beneficial and worth a few minutes of test time. (镇静效果是有益的,值得几分钟的测试时间。)”符合题意。故选F项。 【18题详解】 根据本段的标题“Replace Negative Thoughts with Positive Ones.(用积极的想法代替消极的想法。)”和“For example, you may catch yourself saying ‘I’m going to fail’. (例如,你可能会发现自己在说“我要失败了”。)”可知,本段主要是让我们用积极的想法取代消极的,那么当我们想说“自己要失败”时,应该强迫自己说“我要成功”。D项“Then force yourself to say “I’m going to succeed” instead. (然后强迫自己说“我要成功了”。)”符合题意。故选D项。 19题详解】 根据下文“Instead, remind yourself that it’s OK to make mistakes. (相反,提醒自己犯错误是可以的。) ”可以判断出前后句是相反的意思,C项“It’s easy to get caught up in worrying about a bad grade. B Bonnie Blumberg has always known her mother’s love for knitting(针织) felt natural. C It helps people complete unfinished crafts without charge. C For many students, staying awake all night to study is common practice. A. By offering research results. B. By providing experts’ views. C. By analyzing some theories. D. By sharing some experiences. D One day I typed into ChatGPT all about my upset feelings and it instantly responded, offering a list of practical advice. A Its development should be sped up. B. Its intelligence is winning more favor. C. Its application should be strictly managed. D. Its artificial kindness is no match for humans’. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Nearly every student gets nervous before a test at some point, especially if the exam is an important one.
