Like many high school students, Dio is a 15-year-old sports and music lover. However, unlike many others his age, Dio has faced-and conquered-unthinkable health challenges over the past year. It’s hard to believe he couldn’t speak or walk less than a year ago.
Dio, then a freshman in high school, went from daily sports practices to being unable to open his right hand. Dio’s mother took him to hospital, where they received shocking and frightening news: Dio had a brain tumor (瘤). Within three days, he received a successful 13-hour operation. But while recovering in hospital, Dio had a stroke (中风), which left him unable to feel or use the right side of his body and unable to communicate. “I was faced with a really big mountain to climb, but I was determined to make it through,” shares Dio.
He stayed in hospital to receive physical, speech and language therapy (治疗). Before his stroke, Dio had taught himself to play both the piano and guitar and listened to music any chance he could. Blake French, Dio’s Speech therapist, had read several research studies on the benefits of music for patients. So, once she learned that singing and music were areas of strength for Dio, she regularly applied it to the therapy. Together, Dio and Blake sang familiar songs, one word at a time. Music helped Dio communicate so much better, and helped him recover his confidence. Months later, Dio was allowed to go back to school.
Although he cannot play sports anymore now, he still plays the guitar and piano. “Music has enabled me to talk normally again. It got me over a really big mountain I was determined to climb,” shares Dio. “And now that I’m past it, I’m even more positive and confident.”
4. What happened to Dio when he was a high school freshman?
A. He faced serious health issues. B. He had a stroke before the operation.
C. He received a heart operation. D. He was hurt in a daily sports practice.
5. Why did Blake sing songs with Dio?
A. To communicate better. B. To use the power of music.
C. To become more confident. D. To share her love for music.
6. What can be used to describe Dio?

If the ball goes out of bounds in say, a soccer game, it’s up to the referees to call the violation(犯规). But in a high-level curling(冰壶) match, the stones are somewhat self-policing——thanks to the red and green lights atop each one.
As long as the curler releases the stone before the front of it crosses the first red line——the “hog line”, the lights will stay green, and play will continue. If you see the red lights come on, that means the curler keeps his/her hand on the handle too long, committing a hog line violation. The shot is disqualified, and the stone is quickly removed so it doesn’t disturb other stones on the curling sheet.
The detection system, called “Eye on the Hog”, dates back to the late 1990s, when University of Saskatchewan engineering professor Eric Salt suggested that some of his advanced electrical engineering students invent one for a class project: With his help, they did, and Canadian engineering company Startco improved their design and brought it to market. The Canadian Curling Association soon adopted it for official use, and its popularity grew from there.
Basically, there’s a magnetic strip(磁条) fixed beneath the ice slightly behind the hog line. Inside the stone is an electrical circuit(电路), whose current is affected when you’re touching the handle. If you’re still touching the handle when the stone crosses the in-ice magnet, it’ll set off the battery-operated red lights. Release the handle before the stone reaches the magnet and the green lights will flash until the stone gets there. At that moment, the flashing will switch to a steady green to indicate that the release is qualified.
This system also explains why the player releasing the stone doesn’t wear a glove on their delivery hand: They’re not allowed to, since gloves are banned access to the touch sensor.
Due to the high capacity of Olympic curlers, hog line violations aren’t common in Olympic curling matches——so you don’t often get to see the red lights in action.
8. What does committing the hog line violation mean?
A. The curler crosses the first red line.
B. The curler loses control of the handle.
C. The curler touches a red light on the stone.
D. The curler doesn’t release the stone in time.
9. What does the third paragraph focus on concerning “Eye on the Hog”?
A. Its origin. B. Its popularity.
C. Its initial users. D. Its key functions.
10. What’s the function of the in-ice magnet strip?
A. To locate the hog line.
B. To test the power of batteries.
C. To control the progress of the game.
D. To sense the in-stone electric current.
11. Why are the red lights seldom seen flashing in Olympic curling matches?
A. The players wear special gloves.
B. The players are forbidden to touch them.
C. The detection system mostly has low sensitivity.
D. The players are too expert to commit the violation.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. D 11. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了冰壶赛场的检测器械:Eye on the Hog,介绍了该技术的起源以及应用。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“If you see the red lights come on, that means the curler keeps his/her hand on the handle too long, committing a hog line violation. (如果你看到红灯亮起,那就意味球员手握手柄的时间过长,违反了“hog line”规则。)”可知,违反这一规则意味着球员握手柄时间过长,也就是未能及时投掷。故选D。
9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“The detection system, called “Eye on the Hog”, dates back to the late 1990s, when University of Saskatchewan engineering professor Eric Salt suggested that some of his advanced electrical engineering students invent one for a class project(这个被称为“Eye on the Hog”的检测系统可以追溯到20世纪90年代末,当时萨斯喀彻温大学的工程学教授埃里克·索尔特建议他的一些高级电气工程专业的学生发明一个用于课堂项目)”可知,本段主要讲述的是该检测系统的起源。故选A。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“If you’re still touching the handle when the stone crosses the in-ice magnet, it’ll set off the battery-operated red lights.(当石头穿过冰下磁条时,如果你还在触摸把手,就会触发电池供电的红灯。)”可推断,冰下磁条的作用是感知电。故选D。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Due to the high capacity of Olympic curlers, hog line violations aren’t common in Olympic curling matches——so you don’t often get to see the red lights in action.(由于奥运会冰壶运动员的水平较高,违反冰壶规则的情况在奥运会冰壶比赛中并不常见——所以你不会经常看到比赛中的红灯。)”可知,不常看到红灯亮是因为运动员很专业,不会犯规。故选D。

It was a cool autumn morning when the school announced the annual sports day. For most students, it was a day of excitement and joy, but for me, it was just another event I wanted to avoid. I had always been the type to shy away from group activities, preferring the company of my books and thoughts.
Our class monitor, Sarah, noticed my unwillingness. She was the very image of enthusiasm and leadership, always trying to bring the class together. One day, she approached me during lunch. “Why don’t you join us for the relay race? It’ll be fun,” she said with a warm smile. I hesitated, but her persistence was hard to ignore.
The next day, Sarah organized a practice session. I unwillingly joined, feeling out of place among my more athletic classmates. As we ran, I tripped and fell, scraping (擦伤) my knee. Embarrassed, I wanted to quit, but Sarah was there in an instant, offering a hand and words of encouragement. “It’s okay, we’re a team,” she said. At this time, other fellow classmates came to encourage me. Their kindness made me feel less alone.
As the days went by, I found myself looking forward to the practices. The care and support among my classmates was infectious. I began to see the value of teamwork and the joy of shared experiences. My initial unwillingness melted away, replaced by a newfound sense of belonging.
The anticipation for the sports day filled me with excitement. I dream of the cheers, the applauding crowd, and the thrill of competition. Training hard, I longed to showcase my skills, push my limits, share and feel the joy of victory. This event was more than a game; it means a lot for me. I could not wait to be part of it!

____________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
The day I looked forward to came eventually. The air buzzed with cheers as our relay team stepped onto the track. I was seized by tension and unease, my palms sweating constantly. Sarah patted me on my shoulders, giving me encouragement with an inspiring look. A sense of determination crowding in, I raised my head confidently. When the whistle blew, I dashed like an arrow. But my competitors ran rather fast. My teammates’ shouts urged me forward. What made me frustrated was that I didn’t catch up with them. I was the last one to hand over the baton.
Our opponent winning narrowly, I blamed our failure on myself. “If I’d run faster, we could have won.” I murmured, burying my head, with tears of guilt rolling down my checks. Approaching me. Sara said firmly, “We all gave our best!” The team gathered around, echoing her words. So warm was I that I felt incredibly comforted. Later, we shared snacks under a tree, encouraging each other to do it better next year. We were overwhelmed with joy, broad smiles lighting up our faces. It was then that I realized victory wasn’t just about medals; it was the courage to try and the bonds we’d built. Sports Day had taught me to cherish both.

A. Humorous and athletic. B. Patient and determined.
C. Easy-going and organised. D. Strong-willed and positive.
7. What does Dio’s experience suggest?
A. Music bridges the gap between people. B. Music makes education more successful.
C. Music is the medicine of a troubled mind. D. Music is the language of all human beings.

C Its initial users.
