They are very happy to see each other and share their feelings and memories from their journey. 11 people lived in the bus, braved extreme temperatures, and covered long distances before their journey came to an unexpected end after the bus sank into the Chira River in Peru. Five members of the group shared their stories. David McLaughlin, the driver, said, “We covered close to 40,000 miles over the 20 months or so. And we worked along the way, picking fruit, planting flowers, and cleaning restaurants. It is worth mentioning that the roads were entirely different in Central and South America. We were climbing mountains. It was an adventure.” However, their adventure soon came to an end. While in Peru, the group came across a bridge that the double-decker could not pass. To try to solve the problem, they floated the bus on the Chira River using a special raft. As a result, the bus sank into the river. After the experience, the group learned the value of adventure and the importance of seizing the moment. One member reflected, “Our journey was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” It taught me to always be open to new experiences. 1.What role does Paragraph 1 play? In my first year of university, I started to travel during the holiday. During the Christmas holiday I went to Paris, and during the spring vacation, I visited Athens and various cities in Italy. I was very excited because this was the first time I had travelled abroad with just my friends. This desire to travel started off simply as a way to have something to look forward to after exams, but I soon discovered how important it is to travel. On my travels I have had the opportunity to not only experience new and exciting cultures through the art, history, language and food, but also to communicate with people who have different views on life. Travelling is a learning experience for both yourself and the people you meet. Some people I met during my travels had never heard of Gambia and it was very delightful to share my African roots with them. When you travel you will meet people who have different cultural backgrounds and as a result, sometimes your own ideas and opinions might be challenged. It's important to learn to see things from other people's perspectives (视角) and challenge your own. This is how I realized that travelling is the realization of home. When you travel you can see a different setting, a different language and a different way of living. Travelling is truly an enriching experience and I am always excited about the discoveries that wait for me in my next adventure! 1.Why was the author excited when he was in Italy? Sun hats, backpacks and sneakers (运动鞋)—these are the day-to-day must-haves for the family. Most of their trips seem far from relaxing—cultural study in the hot and dry desert, a 53-kilometer hiking tour of New Zealand, a one-day climb to three English mountaintops and a six-day train ride from Beijing to Moscow. Many assume the family must be wealthy and can afford their global travel, but they are not. Lindesay says they just choose to spend money on travel and eschew pricey hotels and restaurants where possible. Lindesay mentions the trip to Moscow as an example. Instead of taking a taxi from the railway station to the hotel, they took the subway. “We crossed the city for saving money, communicated with local people, and saw they are people just like us, everywhere. We arrived at our destination feeling comfortable.” However, their journeys, which can last weeks or months, have sometimes been inconsistent with their children's schooling. Wu remembers once Lindesay let their elder son ask for leave so that they could go to New York for a 45-day lecture tour. Therefore the son missed his final exam. Things like that bother the family all the time. Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but traveling outside, in distant lands with different languages, cultures, and political structures, is the real test. “You can only get streetwise on the street. You can only get worldly-wise when seeing the world,” he says. 4.How can we describe the Lindesays' trips? A.Pleasant. B.Conventional. C.Challenging. D.Dangerous. 根据第二段“Most of their trips ... from Beijing to Moscow. (他们的大多数旅行似乎都远非放松——在炎热干燥的沙漠中进行文化研究,53公里的新西兰徒步旅行,一天攀登三座英国山顶,以及从北京到莫斯科的六天火车旅行。)”可推知,Lindesay他们一家人的旅行很有挑战性。故选C。 5.What does the underlined word “eschew” in Paragraph 3 mean? A.Visit. B.Avoid. C.Compare. D.Evaluate. 根据第三段中的“Many assume the family ... they took the subway.” B。 6.What problem does the family meet when traveling? A.They have scheduling conflicts. B.They suffer from a tight budget. C.They are faced with language barriers. D.They hold different educational ideas. 根据第四段中的“However, their journeys ... children's schooling.” A。 7.Which statement may Lindesay agree with according to the text? A.Toughness is the best assistant of will. B.Man who travels far knows more. C.Actions speak louder than words. D.There is no royal road to learning. 根据最后一段中的“You can only get streetwise ... he says.” It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West. We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad's friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us to his farm in Pecos. His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guest room of the farmhouse listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool. In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don't be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track (足迹;踪迹) so that you don't get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farmhouse were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees (松树), and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us. Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. [精彩范文] Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Dad and I found it was so cute that we decided to run after it. After a while, we were completely lost in the forest. There was nothing left in our sight but the trees. “We may not be able to make it back to the farmhouse in time for supper,” I thought to myself. After a series of useless attempts to find a way out, we felt hungry and tired. We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. We got stuck in the forest. And an unexpected shower added to the difficulty of our finding a way home, for all the tracks we had made disappeared because of the rain. I was almost breaking down when my father said, “Don't worry, my son. I remember there is a river near the farmhouse. Find the river and we will be back home.” Finally, we found the river and got back to the farmhouse along it. Needless to say, we ate a late dinner. When someone tells me that they're going to spend just 3 days in Paris, I feel like they're most likely not going to love it. I mean, it's possible to have a great time if you do it right and put what you want to see at the first place. During such a short visit most tourists head to see the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Louvre and some other tourist attractions, and therefore experience crowds, long lines and not the real local Paris. Take your pick and spend some time actually enjoying these things instead of rushing through everything. I'm not telling you not to see these famous landmarks, but in order to fully feel the Paris atmosphere, you need to stay in the city longer. A stay in Paris just for a weekend seems far from seeing all the great things. Almost everyone is dreaming of getting to the top of the Eiffel Tower. But the moment you start approaching the tower you might realize that it's not very romantic, as it's surrounded by a ton of visitors and annoying vendors (小贩). The place is crowded, and lines take forever no matter when you visit it. It's hard to find a romantic spot unless you book a dinner on top of the Eiffel Tower. It's something you will only do once, as it's not the best fine dining you've ever had—you're doing it just for the experience. However, if you climb the stairs behind the Croatian Embassy you may be able to find a quiet spot overlooking the tower. The view is wonderful and definitely worth it, especially at night when the tower starts blinking! I recommend you to see the city from up high from the top of the Tour Montparnasse, Arc de Triomphe, or even a carousel (旋转木马) in Tuileries, and actually have the Eiffel Tower in your view. 1.What can be inferred from the first paragraph? A.You can only see crowds at tourist attractions. B.He who has a short visit doesn't love Paris. C.Visitors can have a good time traveling in Paris in three days. D.It takes more time to experience the real Paris. 根据第一段中的“During such a short visit ... not the real local Paris.” D。 2.What is mentioned about visiting Paris according to the author? A.Fully feel the atmosphere of the city. B.Only visit the famous landmarks of the city. C.See the whole city at the weekend. D.Rush through all attractions in the city. A。 3.How does a tourist usually feel after visiting the Eiffel Tower? A.Delighted. B.Sad. C.Exhausted. D.Romantic. 根据第三段中的“But the moment ... when you visit it.” C。 4.Which can be the best title for the passage? A.The atmosphere of Paris B.The tips of visiting Paris better C.The view of the Eiffel Tower D.The tourist attractions in Paris 答案:B 解析:标题判断题。 6.put ... at the first place 把……放在首位 7.head__to 前往 8.be__surrounded__by 被……包围 9.a ton of 大量的 10.be able to 能够 (三)根据语境填入恰当的内容 11.I'm definitely (definite) going to get in touch with these people. 12.The walled city is an important tourist attraction (attract). 13.We'd recommend you to__book (book) your flight early.
