Time for a Change?
A family dinner is an important tradition to celebrate Spring Festival1. Nowadays, some people choose to have the dinner2 in a restaurant, but not everyone is keen on this idea3. What do our readers think?
Dear Editor,
We have eaten out for the Spring Festival family dinner for the last three years, and4 we have enjoyed it no less than eating at home. I don't understand why5 some people refuse to embrace the change.
Can't they admit that6 the preparations for the dinner are hard work? I really don't think it's worth the effort of spending so much time7 preparing for a single meal, and then another hour cleaning up the mess after8 it's over. We work all year, so why can't one day be about spending time with family and9 relaxing?
Eating out10 is a good choice and it has nothing to do with loss of traditions. We still have the dinner with the same people, just in a different place. The occasion is more enjoyable without all that tiring cooking, and the dishes taste better!
In my opinion, what or where11 we eat on Spring Festival Eve really doesn't matter. Eating out may change the form of this tradition, but the love between the family members sitting around the table12 together remains the same.
Wang Peng, software engineer
Dear Editor,
For this year's Spring Festival family dinner, my son has booked a table at the best restaurant13in town14, but15 I'm a bit unhappy about it. For me, it just won't feel like Spring Festival having the dinner out.
When16 I was a little boy, the dinner on the eve of Spring Festival was what17 I looked forward to most. It was not only for the delicious food that18 we seldom got to eat, but19 for the opportunity to have our whole family gathered together20. I would run around the house, listening to the adults chatting about their year. I'd get under my mother's feet in the kitchen, watching her make dumplings. She'd put tokens in some dumplings: candies for a sweet life and peanuts for a long and healthy one. In the evening, all of us would sit around the table, enjoying the food and being together again21. We toasted each other, we laughed, and the simple, homemade dishes tasted more delicious than anything cooked by a top chef22.
I hope my children and their children will still value our memories of preparing the dinner together23. To me, the process is even more important than the dinner itself.
Liu Yonghui, retired teacher

As the season of celebrations begins, many of us find it difficult to let go of the pressure to pause what we are doing. __1__ They think the holidays often feel like a chain of fake-celebrations, full of forced gratitude, and capturing picture-perfect moments for our carefully-planned lives on social media. __2__
Thanksgiving Day is meant to reflect gratitude and connection. Yet, for many, these ideals can feel out of reach, especially when they spend long hours with family members they rarely see or don't feel close to. __3__
Friendsgiving Day, a modern alternative to the traditional family-centered Thanksgiving Day gathering, has been gaining popularity since the early 2000s, officially making its way into Urban Dictionary in 2009. The new holiday offers flexibility and creativity. __4__ Inviting friends often reduces the stress and performative nature of traditional holidays, creating an environment free from the risk of family disagreements.
Traveling for Thanksgiving Day can be exhausting, inconvenient, and expensive. __5__ You can celebrate locally or plan your travels for a less hectic (繁忙的), non-peak time. Most importantly, Friendsgiving Day allows us to express gratitude for the people who truly enrich our lives—the ones who are kind, accepting, and supportive in our day-to-day lives. Sometimes, that's not family by blood but by choice.
So, skip the pressure of a fine feast, grab some board games, order some pizza, and create your own version of holiday joy.
A.Thus, a new holiday, Friendsgiving Day, came into being.
B.However, Friendsgiving Day provides a flexible alternative.
C.It's a good way to celebrate Thanksgiving Day with our beloved ones.
D.For the people who dislike the holiday traditions, those can be disturbing.
E.They have a strong feeling to express their gratitude to their friends or family members.
F.It allows for new traditions, flexible time, unique divisions of labor and creative decorations.
G.Also, they come at a high cost to our wallets as well as our physical and mental well-being.
1.答案:D
解析:根据前文“As the season of ... we are doing.” 根据后文“They think the holidays ... chain of fake-celebrations”可知,他们认为节日像是一连串虚假的庆祝活动。 承前启后,且选项中的“the people who dislike the holiday traditions”为后文They指代的内容。故选D。
3.答案:A
故选A。
4.答案:F
解析:根据前文“The new holiday offers flexibility and creativity.” 后文“Inviting friends often reduces ... family disagreements.”

Dear Peter,
Knowing that you are interested in the Spring Festival, I'm writing with great delight to introduce it and extend an invitation to you.
The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and it is a time when all family members get together. The Spring Festival falls on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month. On that day we often eat our traditional dumplings, which are very delicious. Besides, people usually decorate the doors and windows with red couplets and hang red lanterns, because red means good luck. Perhaps you will enjoy the Spring Festival Gala and set off fireworks with us if you come. In addition, children can get lucky money from their parents and grandparents.
I'd like to invite you to join us for the Spring Festival. Looking forward to your coming.

Dear editor,
At my school, there is a growing concern over smartphone use. Our school makes it clear that we cannot use smartphones at school. Otherwise, we will be punished. However, many of us try to use them in secret.
I don't think it is right to forbid smartphones at school. Firstly, they can keep us up-to-date with current events, which is very important for our study. Secondly, they can help us to exchange ideas with like-minded people. Last but not the least, they make it easier for us students to access online resources, enhancing our understanding of subjects.
In short, I think smartphones should not be forbidden as long as they are used wisely.
Yours,

One day, an elderly postman knocked on the door of a house and asked if there was anyone to take the letter. As soon as he said this, a little girl's voice echoed (回响) from inside, but even after 5 minutes no one came out.
“Can anyone help you take the letter? I have to go to many more places,” the postman said again.
“Uncle, if you are in a hurry, please put the letter under the door. It will take me more time,” the girl replied.
“No, it is a registered letter. Someone's signature is needed,” the postman yelled.
Another 10 minutes passed, and there was no response. The postman got a bit cross about the delay, and he was about to shout when the door opened. He was shocked to see in front of him was a little girl with no legs. Speechless, he gave the letter quietly, took her signature and left. That day, he got her name, Sally.
Sally often lived alone. Her mother died at an early age and her father used to work far away. A maid (女仆) was invited to stay with her in the morning and evening except the day. In a month or two, mails were delivered regularly, and their interaction and attachment grew. Sally noticed that the postman used to come barefoot. The rainy season came. One day when the postman left her home, his footprints were left on wet soil. Sally struggled out with a paper and put it on print and took down the picture of his feet. She asked her maid to get shoes of that size and kept them in a box.
Diwali (排灯节) was around the corner. During Diwali, the postman used to deliver mails and got Diwali gifts from the people who got mails. But when he thought about Sally, he started thinking that he shouldn't meet the girl emptyhanded during the festival. After much thought he bought some chocolate for the little girl. The next day, he went to the little girl's house and knocked.
