We often see cars running on their own without a human driver in science fiction movies. But in China, this is becoming real, reported China Daily.
Self-driving cars first caught wide attention in the country in 2015. That year, Volvo, a carmaker from Sweden, tested such cars in Beijing. Later, Chinese businesses like Baidu started making self-driving cars, too.
Right now, China is on its way to becoming the world’s largest market for self-driving cars. By 2040, China will have 12 million robot taxis, followed by the US with around 7 million, according to China Daily.
Still some people are worried about the safety of the technology. In Wuhan, Hubei province, Baidu’s self-driving cars have had some small accidents. Once, one such car stopped in front of a plastic bag and caused a traffic jam (交通拥堵). Another time, two cars slowed down to face each other, and did not know what to do next.
These situations might seem funny, but they can actually be dangerous. If a robot car has a big accident, it can’t decide what to do next on its own and has to wait for someone to come and help. Also, it is not clear who should be responsible (负责任的) when something goes wrong - the company that owns the robot car, the person who designed (设计) it, or both.
Luckily, in December 2023, the government made a set of new rules to improve the safety of self-driving cars. More rules will come in the future.
51.When did Volvo start testing self-driving cars in Beijing?
A.In 2010. B.In 2015. C.In 2020. D.In 2021.

A.They are smart and safe.
B.They are slower than other cars.
C.They help cut down traffic jams.
D.They may cause some safety problems.

A.Problems caused by self-driving cars.
B.Actions to help self-driving cars work better.
C.What to do when self-driving cars go wrong.
D.The roles businesses have in creating self-driving cars.
55.What has the government done to improve safety?

In the past few years, cars have become smarter and smarter. In more than nine cities, there are driverless taxis in China. Across the world, many “smart roads” have been in practice, and more are being built. Some new technologies are being put to use.
● Roads that recharge (给……充电)
With the right technologies, cars around the world could be producing energy as they go on the road.
Piezoelectric (压电的) roads mix traditional asphalt (柏油) with new materials. They use vibrations (震动) from passing cars to produce electricity. Piezoelectricity, in fact, is nothing new. It was invented in 1880. However, it has never been widely used before now. Lancaster University is going to change that. It has been improving the technology, including developing roadside batteries that can store the electricity.
●Built-in brain
Roads of the future may be able to know how many people are on them. They could send people updates on weather and traffic situations, and recharge electric cars as they drive.
This seems to be a dream, but a company has almost made it come true. By sensing the weight of a vehicle, the company’s smart roads can record the speed of each wheel. After having collected traffic data (数据), the roads will send it to the drivers.
●Roads that never freeze
It can be dangerous to drive in snowy weather. A tech company has developed the snowless roads. When they feel snow or ice on their surfaces, the roads will heat themselves up so that the snow or ice will turn into water and get dry gradually. The project has been successfully tested on a few roads and in some ear parks.
56.How do the “smart roads” produce electricity?

58.What are “Roads without snow or ice” built for?
A.Car parking. B.Vehicle heating. C.Safe driving. D.Electricity storing.
59.Which of the following sentences is TRUE according to the passage?
A.There have been driverless buses in over nine cities in China.
B.Many of the “smart roads” have been put into use in the world.
C.It’s been over 40 years since the Piezoelectricity was invented.
D.Roads without snow or ice have been successfully built.

The building of FAST started in March 2011 and was finished in September 2016. And it officially began working in January 2020. Scientists across the world can ask for using the telescope to study stars, planets and other objects in the universe.
The main scientific task of the telescope is to help study pulsars (脉冲星). And the study of pulsars can help to solve many questions in physics. Another main scientific goal of FAST is to search for life outside the Earth.
The telescope looks like a huge dish in the middle of a forest. It is in a naturally deep and round karst depression (喀斯特洼地) in southwest China’s Guizhou Province. The first advantage of the place is its altitude. Guizhou is usually about 1,100 meters high. Generally, the higher the altitude is, the more the telescope can study. Second, the radio telescope needs to have a “big pan” to get better signals. The huge natural depression could reduce the difficulty of construction (建造). What’s more, the place in Guizhou is far away from cities, and not many people live there. So the telescope can be less disturbed by devices such as TVs, mobile phones and radios from human activities.
So far, FAST has achieved excellent results in many fields. For example, as of April 17, 2024, the number of new pulsars discovered by FAST is more than 900. It provides a powerful tool for human beings to explore the secrets of the universe.
61.When did FAST start working officially?
A.In 2011. B.In 2016. C.In 2020. D.In 2024.

64.The telescope was built in Guizhou Province because of ________.
① the altitude ② the natural depression
③ a great number of people ④ the excellent transportation
A.①② B.②③ C.③④ D.①④
65.Which of the following shows the structure of the text? (① = Paragraph 1, ② = Paragraph 2...)

In 2003, China sent its first astronaut, Yang Liwei, into space. Since then, more than 10 Chinese astronauts have reached for space. 66 Have you ever dreamed of becoming an astronaut like them?
67 To be an astronaut, you need to be a healthy person—good eyesight, a strong heart and lung are important. You’d better not have other small problems. For example, you can’t have scars (伤疤)—they may split in space.
68 In China, you must be a great pilot before you can be an astronaut. You must fly more than 1,000 hours without accidents. 69 You will also wear a 120-kilogram suit and do tasks underwater for six or seven hours without eating or going to the toilet. This is like doing tasks during the space walk.
70 Knowledge is important as well. Astronauts take about 60 courses to get ready for a mission (任务), including math, English, spacecraft design, physics and other courses. They can also do scientific experiments in space.

A.In 2010. B.In 2015. C.In 2020. D.In 2021.

A.Sunlight makes electricity. B.Car movements make electricity.
C.Wind makes electricity. D.Roads charge cars.
57.Which of the following can “Roads built in brain” do?

58.What are “Roads without snow or ice” built for?
A.Car parking. B.Vehicle heating. C.Safe driving. D.Electricity storing.
59.Which of the following sentences is TRUE according to the passage?
A.There have been driverless buses in over nine cities in China.
B.Many of the “smart roads” have been put into use in the world.
C.It’s been over 40 years since the Piezoelectricity was invented.
D.Roads without snow or ice have been successfully built.
60.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To introduce the “smart roads”. B.To prove the value of electric cars.

China’s Sky Eye (FAST) is the world’s largest single-aperture radio telescope (射电望远镜). It has got a lot of attention from all over the world.
A.In 2011. B.In 2016. C.In 2020. D.In 2024.
62.One of the main tasks of FAST is to ________.
A.study black holes B.solve our daily problems
C.know pulsars more D.search for life on the earth
63.What does the underlined word “devices” mean?
A.电波 B.活动 C.选址 D.设备
64.The telescope was built in Guizhou Province because of ________.
① the altitude ② the natural depression
③ a great number of people ④ the excellent transportation
A.①② B.②③ C.③④ D.①④
65.Which of the following shows the structure of the text? (① = Paragraph 1, ② = Paragraph 2...)
A. B.
C. D.

China’s Sky Eye (FAST) is the world’s largest single-aperture radio telescope (射电望远镜). It has got a lot of attention from all over the world.
A.In 2011. B.In 2016. C.In 2020.
A. B.
C. D.

例文:
Life in the Future
With the rapid progress of society (社会), life in the future will be quite different. Now let me tell you something about it.
First, living conditions will be greatly improved. There will be less pollution because more clean energy like solar power will be used. The air will be fresher and the water will be cleaner. Robots will become part of daily life—they will help with housework, look after the elderly and even do some simple jobs in factories, making our life much easier.
Second, travel will be more convenient and exciting. We will have more free time as working hours will be shorter. Besides traveling by high-speed trains or planes, we may even take spaceships to visit other planets for holidays or explore the universe. Underwater trips to see marine life will also be common.
Besides, study will be more flexible and efficient. There will be rich online learning resources from all over the world. We can study at home through interactive courses, and if we have questions, we can get help from AI tutors in time. We won’t be limited by classrooms, which makes learning more interesting.
How amazing the future life will be! I’m looking forward to experiencing it and will work hard to make it a better reality.
