B Pooja Rai was a young architecture student in 2014 when she went with a friend to give food to a local orphanage. She was surprised at what she saw. Kids were playing with anything they could get their hands on. One group was rolling around a broken metal pipe. Two boys were trying to play badminton, using old shoes as rackets. “Play shouldn’t just be part of a rich kid’s lifestyle. All kids have a right to enjoy their childhoods.” Rai says. Over the next few weeks, she talked with friends about collecting money for a playground. And that’s when she thought of old tires. Around 100 million tires are thrown away in India every year. Could they reuse them as playground materials and help the environment, too? That idea became a reality in 2015, using old tires—all cleaned, carefully looked over to make sure they are safe to use, and painted in bright colors. The following year, she created Anthill Creations, which has built 275 playgrounds across India—celebrating the power of play in public spaces orphanages, and schools. “Our work always begins with talks with kids about what they want from this space.” says Rai. Sometimes it can take a few hours, or a few visits, until children are ready to open up. She also draws on her experience as an architect. “I found that spaces are powerful in shaping people’s behavior.” she says. Most of the play spaces Rai designs feature large tire sculptures of cars, buildings, or animals, paired with more classic elements of swings and jungle gyms. In one girl’s school in Bengaluru, the children wanted their play space to be shaped into a boxing ring, with tires doubling up as punching bags. “Their teacher was unsure about it.” Rai remembers. “But the girls said they didn’t want people to see them as weak. They wanted to practice self-defense and grow stronger.” In December 2019, this playground became a reality. 41. What did Rai find out about the kids in a local orphanage? A. They behaved badly. B. They were badly treated. C. They had nothing to do but play. D. They were short of play equipment. 42. What did Rai do with the thrown-away tires? A. She renewed them in a tire shop. B. She turned them into artistic works. C. She used them to design play spaces. D. She sold them to raise money for hungry kids. 43. What did Rai take into consideration when carrying out her work? A. Children’s needs. B. Children’s experiences. C. Her favourite childhood games. D. An architect friend’s suggestions. 44. What can we learn about the girls from the last paragraph? A. They needed to build their confidence. B. They wanted to win their teachers’ trust. C. They finally had their dream playground. D. They often helped with collecting old tires. 45. Which of the following can best describe Rai? A. Talented and hard-working. B. Creative and kind-hearted. C. Realistic and lonely. D. Poor but caring. C The world is full of advice on how to get a good night’s sleep, but sometimes doing so just isn’t possible. If you are struggling with a sleep disorder, are a shift worker or have a baby who. wakes every few hours, being told how to sleep well can be annoying. For others, despite feeling exhausted all day, a fourth episode of your favorite TV series can seem more appealing than going to bed. How do you know if you are sleep-deprived? For some people, the answer will be obvious; for others, it may be less so. Russell Foster, a professor at the University of Oxford, specifies three signs that you are probably not getting enough sleep: “Feeling that you don’t perform at your peak during the day; oversleeping on free days; or craving (渴望得到) a nap during the day.” “Lack of good sleep can cause an imbalance in your appetite hormones,” says Martin Meadows, a registered dietitian: “The hormone ghrelin, which causes you to feel hungry, increases and the hormone leptin, which signals that you are full; decreases.” As Meadows says: “It’s a perfect storm where we want to eat more and we don’t know when to stop, combined with the fact that when we are sleep-deprived our willpower is lower, arid it all becomes pretty tricky. Poor sleep, or sleep deprivation (匮乏), leads to an increased likelihood of poor lifestyle choices. Many of us get stuck in the habit of eating junk food, and the knock-on effect is that the junk food disturbs our sleep, because it’s higher in sugar; it’s more stimulating.” “Short term, you can get away with the negative influence of sleep deprivation of you,” says Foster. “It’s in the long term that things start to fall apart.” He catalogues the ill effects: “Your cognitive performance. drops with accumulated sleep deprivation—your communication skills, your decision-making skills, your memory.” There is also an increased risk of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease, depression and psychosis. Fortunately, according to Meadows, most of us could do with an extra hour to an hour and a half of sleep each night to cope with sleep deprivation. And if you had a bad night’s sleep, Meadows recommends “making a conscious effort to choose foods such as wholegrains, beans, fruits and vegetables. Because they are packed with fiber and water, they will help you feel full while limiting your overall energy intake.” 46. The examples given in the first paragraph are intended to ______. A. list reasons why people hate advice on good sleep B. highlight the harm caused by sleep deprivation C. present the factual phenomenon of lack of sleep D. form a contrast with the following paragraphs 47. How does lack of good sleep affect appetite according to Martin Meadows? A. It disturbs the feeling of being hungry or full. B. It ruins your appetite instead of feeling hungry. C. It causes imbalance in eating and sleeping D. It has no impact on appetite hormones. 48. Which of the following message is conveyed by Meadows in paragraph.4? A. When it’s stormy outside, we crave for junk food and a good night sleep. B. When we feel under the weather, we should eat less and sleep more. C. We should combine healthy eating with regular sleep together. D Bad eating and sleep deprivation contributes to each other. 49. Which of the following may, NOT be a consequence of sleep deprivation? A. Irregular heartbeat. B. Failing memory. C. Poor decision-making. D. Bad choices of lifestyle. 50. People lacking sleep are encouraged to ______. A sleep for as long as they want during the day B. watch one episode of their favorite TV series C. prevent yourself from energy intake each night D. consume food rich in fiber and water D It is sometimes jokingly said that you may skip a meal a day without any adverse effect but skip using your WeChat for an hour and you will feel distinctly unwell. It is an acknowledgement of the fact that the app is no longer only a fun tool but an essential part of life for millions. Launched in January 2011 this messaging, social media and mobile payment app today has more than 1 billion individual users. People use it for everything, from applying for a business license to booking a hospital appointment to keeping up with family and friends, shopping and paying bills—activities that are part and parcel of our everyday life. When it was first introduced, WeChat was only an app supporting voice, video, picture and text messages between two persons or among a group. But today it has become ubiquitous. In the past, people carried their wallet and keys with them wherever they went; today, a smart phone with WeChat installed is all they need in daily life. Its functions like Moments and mini programs and the official WeChat accounts of government agencies and companies have made communication and public services accessible and convenient like never before. WeChat is also widely used by enterprises. Figures from Tencent show there are around 15 million WeChat official accounts, which enjoy 5 billion followers. Most businesses use their WeChat groups as a standard marketing kit. This has immensely reduced advertising, marketing and communication costs, and in the background of the novel coronavirus disease, made operations faster, contactless and safe. However, there are concerns about the downsides of WeChat, such as addiction among primary school children. Equally serious is the misuse of WeChat for fraud or instigating crimes. However, it has to be kept in mind that these fallouts are not really the fault of WeChat, but due to the misuse of the app. If we learn to temper our use of messaging apps with prudence and pragmatism, we could be looking forward to yet new conveniences and experience in this decade with the rapid development of 5G technology and artificial intelligence. Ultimately, the choice is ours, whether to use WeChat or any other new invention, wisely or wantonly. 51. We can conclude from the first paragraph that ___________. A. we can easily skip a meal a day. B. we will be ill by not using WeChat. C. WeChat used to be meant for fun. D. WeChat has become inseparable in daily life. 52. The underlined word “ubiquitous” in Paragraph 3 probably has the same meaning as ____________. A. everywhere. B. somewhere. C. nowhere. D. wherever. 53. For what reasons do the government agencies choose to use WeChat? A. WeChat has a mobile payment function. B. The agencies provide better service through WeChat. C. Mini programs are convenient for the agencies. D. People do not have to carry keys and cash with them. 54. What benefits does WeChat bring to the businesses? A. It has brought more followers. B. It has become a standard. C. It has helped to cut down the costs. D. It has made the businesses healthier. 55. What is to be remembered when we look at the downsides of WeChat? A. The 5G technology will bring new conveniences and experience. 第Ⅱ卷 五、阅读下面短文,按照要求用英语回答问题。(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读表达 Just like everyone, I have experienced ups and downs in my life. I am an aerospace engineer from India. I was told by my relatives, close friends and others that it was hard for a non-IT student to pursue a master’s degree in IT and graduate from a US university. I had never taken courses related to computers or programming. I was never interested in being a programmer, but things changed. I became so captivated by the convenience IT has brought to our life that I made up my mind to chase a master’s degree in IT. At first, I came across too many difficulties and setbacks. Coming from a middle-class family, the huge cost per credit was a big issue. My English accent was terrible. Most importantly, the course seemed impossible at first. Although I felt so discouraged and frustrated, I never thought of giving up. Then I decided to choose my university because it promised its students to help them learn practically. During my first month, it was difficult to understand the Americans’ accent and finish my assignments. But I never gave in. I walked two miles to the university every day so that I could use my travel money to buy a meal. I started looking for jobs and I got an offer to work as a student assistant, which meant lifting benches and chairs every day. I took all these challenges as my chances, and I believed that hard work was my strength. Right now I am graduating with a GPA of 3.96/4 and a job offer from a multinational company that has asked me to start right after graduation. When you have a dream to realize, there is nothing that can stop you. All you need is the diligence and persistence. Hard work always pays off. Having a determined will is also necessary. 56. 【答案】41. D 42. C 43. A 44. C 45. D. Bad eating and sleep deprivation contributes to each other. 49. Which of the following may, NOT be a consequence of sleep deprivation? It is an acknowledgement of the fact that the app is no longer only a fun tool but an essential part of life for millions. Launched in January 2011, this messaging, social media and mobile payment app today has more than 1 billion individual users. If we learn to temper our use of messaging apps with prudence and pragmatism we could be looking forward to yet new conveniences and experience in this decade with the rapid development of 5G technology and artificial intelligence. A. WeChat should be held responsibly. B. WeChat should be banned among primary school children. C. The improper use of the app leads to many problems. D. The 5G technology will bring new conveniences and experience. 【答案】51. D 52. A 53. B 54. C 55. 56. Why did the author’s family and friends say that it was hard for him to pursue a master’s degree in IT? (2 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 58. What is the main idea of paragraph 3? (no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 59. What made the author graduate with a higher GPA and a good job offer? (no more than 15 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 60. What do you think of the author? Why? (no more than 25 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】56. Because he was a non-IT student. 57. Fascinated by. 58. Many difficulties and sethacks the author came across. 59. Taking all challenges as his chances and believing hard work was his strength. 60. He is determined. Because he took all challenges as his chances and believed hard work was his strength. 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者作为一名非IT专业的学生,克服重重困难,最终在美国大学获得IT硕士学位并找到理想工作的励志故事。 【56题详解】 考查细节理解。根据第一段中“I was told by my relatives, close friends and others that it was hard for a non-IT student to pursue a master’s degree in IT and graduate from a US university.(我的亲戚、密友和其他人都告诉我,对于一个非IT专业的学生来说,攻读IT硕士学位并从美国大学毕业是很困难的)”可知,作者的家人和朋友说他攻读IT硕士学位很困难,因为他是非IT专业的学生。故答案为:Because he was a non-IT student. 【57题详解】 考查词句猜测。根据第二段中“I became so captivated by the convenience IT has brought to our life that I made up my mind to chase a master’s degree in IT.(我被IT给我们的生活带来的便利深深……,以至于我决定攻读IT硕士学位)”可知,作者决定攻读IT硕士学位,说明他被IT带来的便利深深吸引和迷住。由此可知,划线词组意思是“深深吸引或迷住”。故答案为:Fascinated by. 【58题详解】 考查主旨大意。根据第三段“At first, I came across too many difficulties and setbacks. Recently, he faced the daunting task of learning a new programming language for a major project at school. Initially, the complex syntax and numerous algorithms seemed like insurmountable obstacles, leaving him feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. To overcome this challenge, Tom first adjusted his mindset. He realized that learning a new skill takes time and effort, so he banished feelings of self - doubt and embraced a positive attitude. Then, he developed a detailed study plan. When he got stuck, he didn't hesitate to seek help. He joined online programming communities, where he interacted with experienced programmers who could answer his questions and offer valuable advice. He also consulted his school's programming teacher, who provided additional resources and guidance. From this experience, Tom learned the importance of perseverance and adaptability.
