Take a Trip to Alaska’s Distant Aleutian Islands
Natural landscapes
Halfway between the United States and Japan is Alaska’s Adak Island. It is one of the remote Aleutian islands. It is a place best known for its natural beauty. The coast is home to rich wildlife. Purple lupine flowers can be seen along roads through grassy hills. Hot springs cover the landscape. Snow-topped mountains and the Great Sitkin volcano rise in the distance.
Locals
Adak Island is home to the native Aleut people. In town, fewer than 100 people live fulltime in old military houses. These houses sit in mostly empty neighborhoods with other buildings in need of repair.
Activities
It is not easy to get to Adak Island. It requires a four-hour plane trip from Anchorage. People visit Adak to hunt, watch birds, climb mountains, or examine one of the many abandoned military bases. People also come to hike. There are many beautiful hikes on the island. One at Finger Bay offers views of the volcano. A hike to Lake Bonnie Rose includes an old abandoned military building built into hills.
At Horseshoe Bay, brave people can climb down a rope to the coast below and nearby hot springs. At Clam Lagoon, people can watch harbor seals and sea lions playing in the water and warming themselves on the rocks.
For bird watchers, the area is wonderful. And Adak’s strange “National Forest” is also worth a visit. This is a small collection of evergreen trees in an otherwise nearly treeless landscape.
Charge for 8 days
The single price: $1400 per person
The group price: $1,200 per person (over 2 persons)

Raj Patel was 5 traveling with his family to India from England.A young girl, no older than 12, approached their car, carrying a crying baby, begging for money and food. “My parents embarrassingly pushed some money out to her from the window,”Patel says. “Since then, the journey has been to figure out why this stuff happens.”
Upon returning to England, Patel decided to rent out his toys and raise money to stop hunger. It didn’t take him long to realize his attempts would not fix the problem. While attending Oxford University, Patel had an idea to shift his major to mathematics, believing that mathematics could handle the crisis of hunger and poverty (贫困).But as he dived deeper into the topic, he learned the political and systemic side of the story. So he changed his undergraduate degree back to economics and added the study of philosophy and politics to his pursuits (事业).
After graduation, he worked for the World Bank and the United Nations. But even that, he says, didn’t lead to workable solutions
His first book, Stuffed and Starved, was a breakout work written for a general audience. While living in Africa, Patel created a number of documentaries but none gained much popularity until he met Anita Chitaya, an activist in Bwabwa, a remote village in Malawi. Anita works with a local organization that has fought hunger in Malawi for decades. She helps farmers to experiment with crops to grow more nutritious food. Her story evolved into an 11-year project -The Ants&the Grasshopper, which earned the Moving Mountains Award.
As the decade of research, filming and editing carries on, this drought-stricken village goes from being.self-sufficient through sustainable farming practices to struggling to grow enough nutritious food and access clean, drinkable water. Climate change ended up being another part of the story.
Patel knows that he needs to find other ways to reach audiences. He released a widely shared YouTube video about capitalism, chicken nuggets (鸡块) and the global hunger crisis. He’s given 20-minute TED Talks that summarize the intentions of his books. No matter what gets thrown his way, Patel seems to course-correct in order to continue pursuing his mission.
24. What excited Patel’s pursuit of his career?
A. A beggar-led crowd.
B. A fund-raising event.
C. A chance encounter with a needy girl.
D. A narrow escape from a car accident.
25. Why did Patel shift his major to mathematics?
A. He felt he was good at it.
B. He disliked boring economic theories.
C. He was eager to learn its political and systemic side.
D. He considered it as a solution to the hunger and poverty crisis.
26. What is The Ants & the Grasshopper mainly about?
A. Anita’s journey to tackle food crisis.
B. Causes of climate change in Malawi.
C. Bwabwa’s remarkable transformation.
D. Patel’s personal experience in Bwabwa.
27. What did Patel do to attract more attention to global hunger?
A. He shot funny videos.
B. He made presentations.
C. He cut the price of his books.

How AI will transform education is very important to schools such as mine, teachers such as me, and hardworking care-givers such as the parents in my community. Could AI get our children to grasp new concepts and skills? Might AI be better equipped to help them exploit their own intelligence? After a few days watching my children use artificial intelligence-based learning tools, I can tell you the short answer is NO.
Human intelligence is different from the computer’s. For one, human intelligence can not be measured. The brain is plastic, always developing and growing as we learn from our environments. In addition, human intelligence relies on human interaction. Exercising our intelligence is something we do naturally as we connect with others, consider the world around us and seek to improve our relationship to that world.
In education, there has been a movement toward social-emotional and problem-based learning. So educators attempt to motivate interest in subjects and skills by turning learning moments into communal (共有的) problem-solving events. When we combine analytical learning with social- emotional learning, students become mastered in the material we want them to know and get more excited about the learning process.
Using AI looks very different from this. AI learning often involves an individual working alone with a computer program. It can crowd source information to help students find facts about their environment, solve a problem and come up with a creative way forward. But AI doesn’t force students to think through or keep anything. And simply being fed facts and information is not the same as “learning”.
It is fascinating to imagine that AI might cure what annoys us. Many parents don’t have the resources-in time money or energy—to teach their kids at home. If AI could fill the gaps, how great, right? Yet the nature of AI “teaching” as it currently exists means that students merely level up without learning. When it comes to developing intelligence, nothing can beat what we humans have been doing, face to face, for centuries.
28. What do we know about human intelligence according to paragraph 2?
A. It is measured easily B. It is of great significance
C. It is related to education D. It is changeable and interactive
29. What can be inferred about AI learning from paragraph 4?
A. It is widely used at school.
B. It makes no difference to education.
C. It helps develop students’ intelligence
D. It does little help with students’ true learning.
30. What is the author’s attitude to AI learning?
A. Unclear B. Neutral C. Disapproving D. Favorable
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Could AI Really Teach Students
B. Should students Use AI Frequently
C. How Students Use AI in Their Study
D. How Teachers Interact with Students
D
Lifestyle creep, sometimes called lifestyle inflation, is when living expenses and non-essential expenditures grow with income. In bad cases of lifestyle creep, this unnecessary spending can cut into savings.
Lifestyle creep is most visible among high earners, but anyone can fall into this trap. Who hasn’t justified eating out more often every week after receiving a 1 or 2 percent raise? The temptation of a more costly lifestyle is difficult to resist. If you’re making enough money to afford a larger apartment, shouldn’t you move to a larger apartment?
Improving your standard of living as your income increases isn’t an objectively bad thing, but when that habit cuts into your savings efforts, it can be a major financial risk. As Katie Waters, a financial planner at Stable Waters Financial, says, “Something’s got to give.”
Then how to avoid lifestyle creep? It just takes the same moderation and planning you used when you had a smaller income. If you can, head off lifestyle creep from the beginning by giving your raise or bonus money a purpose immediately. This can be to pay down debt, save for a house, or add to retirement accounts. This way, you won’t be tempted to spend it on a non-necessity. If you fear you’ve already fallen victim to lifestyle inflation at any level, you can still turn your spending around. If you are putting all your expenses on your credit card, Waters recommends rearranging so only routine, fixed monthly expenses are on the card. “The monthly variable costs—food, clothing, personal care, purchases for the home, the list goes on—are where your money slips away easily.” Waters says, “Calculate your possible savings each pay period and put that money into a separate checking account.”
“As with all things, the secret to managing your finances like an adult is a constant strive for balance,” Waters says. “Have fun along the way, but don’t let the tail wag the dog.”
32. What can we learn about lifestyle creep?
A. It contributes to a pay raise. B. It refers to a high living standard,
C. It sometimes affects a person’s savings. D. It only traps people with a high income.
33. Why does the author quote Katie Waters’ words in paragraph 3?
A. To list the bad consequences of lifestyle creep.
B. To stress the importance of giving in one’s life.
C. To show that lifestyle creep is quite understandable.
D. To support that lifestyle creep can cause financial problems.
34. What can be done to avoid lifestyle creep?
A. Put all the expenses on a credit card. B. Save the bonus money for a non-necessity.
C. Increase the monthly costs on food and clothing. D. Set different checking accounts for specific purposes.
35. What do the underlined words “don’t let the tail wag the dog” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you. B. Don’t put the cart before the horse.
C. Don’t do one thing under the cover of another D. Don’t count the chicken before they are hatched.

Eleven-year-old Jack was selling balloons in a park one day over a long holiday weekend when he stepped upon a wallet. After picking it up, he searched the wallet to identify the owner and found some $100 notes, some loose change and a key card inside. He didn’t hesitate to do the right thing: according to the sign on the key card, he found where the owner lived.
Seventeen-year-old Chase had lost his wallet earlier that day while out fishing with his friends. He had searched and searched, but in vain. Eventually, Chase returned home and found his wallet sent back in the gate house of the community. But the one who sent the wallet had left without leaving his name or address When the family were talking about the story later that day, they decided that they wanted to do something to pay back the finder’s kindness. But what could they do? They didn’t know who the finder was, not to mention his address. Could they find him?
It was when they were at a loss that a good idea occurred to Chase’s mother, Michelle: they could check the monitor recording of the gate house. Luckily, they got a picture of the boy. She quickly made a Facebook post using the photo, describing the boy’s honest act and expressing how the family were hoping to meet him to convey their thanks in person.
In no time at all, some people in the community recognised Jack and informed Michelle. When Michelle and her family got contact with Jack, they were surprised to learn just what Jack’s family had been going through.
Jack’s father had recently recovered from a disease but was still suffering from the aftereffects. He had difficulty breathing and wasn’t allowed to return to his job at a meat packing plant. So that was the reason why the boy had to sell balloons to help support the family.

W: Of course. Have you found someplace to stay?
M: Not yet.
W: Well, try the Latin Quarter. That’s a historic part of the city, and it should be quite reasonable. It’s really lively, too, because it’s in the students’ area.
M: Sounds good, thanks. What about getting around? Are taxis and buses convenient?
W: Taxis are expensive and buses don’t reach everywhere. Just use the subway. It’s usually quite crowded, but it doesn’t cost much.
M: It’s euros in France, right?
W: Yes. When I go, I usually just use my bank card and get cash from ATMs. It’s no problem.
M: Is Paris safe?
W: Yes, it’s as safe as London or any other city, I think.

W: Hello. My name is Slava and I’m here today to tell you a little bit about what school life is like in Russia. I go to a co-educational (男女同校的) school in Russia — there are both boys and girls at my school. We are taught Russian, literature, and history. My favorite subject is literature and my least favorite subject is history. I go to school five days a week and my classes start at 9:00 am and end at 4:00 pm. And we have lunch at the school dining hall. There’s a playground and a biology lab. Here in Russia, we start school when we are 6 years old. We have to stay in school until we are at least 15 years old. When I finish school, I’m going to a training college to study music. My father wants me to help him with his business, but I’m not interested in it. I have some good teachers. They are very strict. And I get along well with most of my classmates.

A
Take a Trip to Alaska’s Distant Aleutian Islands
The single price: $1,400 per person
The group price: $1,200 per person (over 2 persons)

Raj Patel was 5, traveling with his family to India from England.A young girl, no older than 12, approached their car, carrying a crying baby, begging for money and food.

Many parents don’t have the resources-in time, money or energy—to teach their kids at home. If AI could fill the gaps, how great, right? Yet the nature of AI “teaching” as it currently exists means that students merely level up without learning. When it comes to developing intelligence, nothing can beat what we humans have been doing, face to face, for centuries.
28. What do we know about human intelligence according to paragraph 2?
A. It is measured easily B. It is of great significance
C. It is related to education D. It is changeable and interactive
29. What can be inferred about AI learning from paragraph 4?
A. It is widely used at school.
B. It makes no difference to education.
C. It helps develop students’ intelligence
D. It does little help with students’ true learning.
30. What is the author’s attitude to AI learning?
A. Unclear B. Neutral C. Disapproving D. Favorable
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Could AI Really Teach Students
B. Should students Use AI Frequently
C. How Students Use AI in Their Study
D. How Teachers Interact with Students
D 29. D 30. C 31. A
根据第二段“For one, human intelligence can not be measured. The brain is plastic, always developing and growing as we learn from our environments. In addition, human intelligence relies on human interaction. (首先,人类的智力是无法测量的。大脑是可塑的,总是随着我们从环境中学习而发展和成长。此外,人类的智能依赖于人类的互动。)”可知,人类的智能因大脑的发展成长而一直在改变,同时也存在互动性。故选D项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“AI learning often involves an individual working alone with a computer program. It can crowd source information to help students find facts about their environment, solve a problem and come up with a creative way forward. But AI doesn’t force students to think through or keep anything. And simply being fed facts and information is not the same as ‘learning’.
根据第一段“After a few days watching my children use artificial intelligence-based learning tools, I can tell you the short answer is NO. (在观察了我的孩子们使用基于人工智能的学习工具几天后,我可以告诉你简短的答案是否定的。)”,以及最后一段“Many parents don’t have the resources—in time, money or energy—to teach their kids at home. If AI could fill the gaps, how great, right? Yet the nature of AI ‘teaching’ as it currently exists means that students merely level up without learning. When it comes to developing intelligence, nothing can beat what we humans have been doing, face to face, for centuries.
通读全文,尤其是第一段“How AI will transform education is very important to schools such as mine, teachers such as me, and hardworking care-givers such as the parents in my community. Could AI get our children to grasp new concepts and skills? Might AI be better equipped to help them exploit their own intelligence? After a few days watching my children use artificial intelligence-based learning tools, I can tell you the short answer is NO.
A To list the bad consequences of lifestyle creep.
C 33. D 34. D 35. B
根据第一段“In bad cases of lifestyle creep, this unnecessary spending can cut into savings.(在糟糕的情况下,这种不必要的开支会减少储蓄)”可知,生活方式蠕变有时会影响一个人的储蓄。
根据第三段“Improving your standard of living as your income increases isn’t an objectively bad thing, but when that habit cuts into your savings efforts, it can be a major financial risk. As Katie Waters, a financial planner at Stable Waters Financial, says, “Something’s got to give.”(随着收入的增加而提高生活水平,这在客观上并不是一件坏事,但当这种习惯削减了你的储蓄努力时,它可能是一个重大的财务风险。正如Stable Waters的理财规划师凯蒂·沃特斯所说,“总要有所付出。”)”可推知,作者在第三段引用凯蒂·沃特斯的话是为了支持这种生活方式的蠕变会导致财务问题。故选D。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Then how to avoid lifestyle creep? It just takes the same moderation and planning you used when you had a smaller income. (那么如何避免生活方式的蠕变呢?它只需要你在收入较少时使用的同样的适度和计划)”以及““The monthly variable costs—food, clothing, personal care, purchases for the home, the list goes on—are where your money slips away easily.” Waters says, “Calculate your possible savings each pay period and put that money into a separate checking account.”(“每月的可变成本——食物、衣服、个人护理、家庭用品等等——是你的钱很容易溜走的地方。”沃特斯说:“计算每个工资期可能的储蓄,并将这笔钱存入一个单独的支票账户。”)”可知,为特定目的设置不同的支票账户能避免生活方式的蠕变。故选D。
【35题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“As with all things, the secret to managing your finances like an adult is a constant strive for balance(与所有事情一样,像成年人一样管理财务的秘诀是不断努力保持平衡)”可知,沃特斯说与所有事情一样,像成年人一样管理财务的秘诀是不断努力保持平衡。

One possible version:
Chase and his mother decided to help. Originally, they wanted to give a reward to the boy who demonstrated his integrity even when he was in such a great need of money, but now they thought Jack and his family needed more help. They mapped out a strategy. It was the Internet that helped them quickly find Jack, so they turned to the Facebook again. They posted photos of Jack’s selling balloons, his story of returning the wallet and his family’s suffering on the Internet, appealing to people to help.
The response online was great. The support came rolling in, quicker and in greater quantities than expected! Jack’s story went viral. People living in the city visited the park where Jack sold balloons, and happily bought one or two. Besides, a store owner nearby offered an easy job to Jack’s father. The kind man said he was impressed by Jack. “Nothing could be shinier than an honest heart and duty for the family for a child,” he added. Indeed, an honest heart deserved all the best things in the world.
