Back-to-school Book Guide
Harvard University Press publishes insightful books on education for every audience. The editor picked three of them for the upcoming semester.
◆ Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning
by Peter C. Brown, Henry L. Roediger Ⅲ, Mark A. McDaniel
Many common study habits, like underlining, highlighting, rereading and single-minded repetition of new skills simply don’t work. Science shows that more durable learning comes from self-testing, introducing certain difficulties in practice, and waiting to re-study new material until a little forgetting has occurred. Make It Stick offers specific techniques for becoming more productive learners.
◆ The Learning Household: How to Help Your Child Get More out of School
by Ken Bain With Marsha Bain
Children are eager learners, but many kids end up bored at school. What can parents do to keep their natural curiosity? Providing dozens of activities that can be adapted to meet the needs of every family, this book is a guide to help parents create “a learning household” in which they inspire children to ask thoughtful questions, to discover their passions and to take risks.
◆ What the Best College Students Do
by Ken Bain
Combining academic research with insights from people who led lives of meaning and accomplishment, Ken Bain identifies the key attitudes the best college students have. The best students study in small bites, focus more on concept than procedure, and work collaboratively. They don’t achieve success by making success their goal — when it comes, it is a byproduct of following their intellectual curiosity, solving useful problems, and taking risks to learn and grow.
1. Which learning strategy will the book Make It Stick promote?
A. Timely re-studying. B. Repeated learning.
C. Designing activities. D. Working with others.
2. What is the intention of the book The Learning Household?
A. To improve parent-kid relationship. B. To make school enjoyable for kids.
C. To encourage kids to explore. D. To help teachers’ work in class.
3. What is a key feature of the best college students according to the third book?
A. They are not afraid of risks. B. They have clear goals on success.
C. They are smarter than others. D. They prefer learning alone.

It all started when then 16-year-old Boyan Slat was scuba diving (水肺潜水) in Greece and was surprised to see more plastic than fish. The question “Why don’t we just clean it up?” stayed in his mind, and led him to devote his high school science project to understanding the problem.
After a year of experimenting, Boyan came up with the idea to use the ocean currents to his advantage, and let them be the driving force behind catching and collecting the plastic. Instead of going after the plastic, you could let the plastic come to you.
Initially, his idea did not gain attention. He decided to quit his studies and founded The Ocean Cleanup, with just 300 euros of savings as a starting capital.
Then one night in March 2013, things changed. He spoke on TEDx about this project. The TEDx video spread to hundreds of thousands of people. In a matter of days, an initial team was built, and it raised the first USD 90,000. The project took off.
Their early models had their share of failures — plastic slipping through, parts breaking off in the ocean. But they kept at it. In 2019, System 001/B finally worked. Then came System 002, which in 2021 gathered 20,000 pounds of ocean waste. Now they launched the Interceptor: a solar-powered system designed to catch plastic in rivers before it reaches the ocean. So far, Interceptors have been used in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Dominican Republic, and Los Angeles — with more on the way.
Boyan Slat’s journey is a powerful reminder that innovation, passion, and determination can lead to significant change. His work to clean up the oceans has made a lasting impact on the world and serves as an inspiration for others to take action on environmental issues.

A. A high school science project. B. An unpleasant diving experience.
C. A cleanup research program. D. An experiment of ocean currents.
5. What is Boyan’s idea of the ocean cleanup?
A. Catching plastics by scuba divers. B. Breaking down plastics in the sea.
C. Trapping trash using ocean currents. D. Going after plastics with machines.
6. What was the turning point of the The Ocean Cleanup?
A. The donated 300 euros to the project. B. Boyan’s presentation in a TEDx video.
C. The successful launching of Interceptor. D. Boyan’s decision to drop out of school.
7. What can be learned from Boyan Slat’s story?
A. Better late than never. B. All roads lead to Rome.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. B 7. D

One of the most important impacts of AI is in the field of education, where tools like ChatGPT have already begun to change how students learn and teachers teach. But as AI develops, a new player is entering the scene: DeepSeek.
DeepSeek is not just another AI tool — it’s an intelligent platform designed to address the unique needs of the education field. One of the biggest challenges in education is meeting the diverse learning needs of students. DeepSeek can analyze individual learning patterns and adapt contents accordingly. For example, if a student struggles with math, DeepSeek can provide personalized exercises and explanations to help them master the concepts. This level of personalization goes beyond what ChatGPT currently offers, making DeepSeek a powerful tool for individualized instruction.
To understand how DeepSeek’s personalization works in practice, consider a real-world example from a high school in California, which uses DeepSeek to address the diverse learning needs of its students. By analyzing performance data, DeepSeek identifies that about 30% of students are struggling with physics. It then provides personalized exercises and video lessons to help these students catch up. Within a few months, the school sees a 20% improvement in physics test scores.
Rather than viewing DeepSeek and ChatGPT as competitors, it’s more reasonable to see them as complementary (互补的) tools. ChatGPT can handle general tasks like answering questions or producing contents, while DeepSeek focuses on specialized educational applications. Together, they can create an all-round AI-powered learning ecosystem.
As we look to the future, one thing is clear: AI tools like DeepSeek and ChatGPT are not just improving education — they’re reshaping it. Whether you’re a student, teacher, or institution, now is the time to embrace these technologies and unlock their full potential (潜能).
8. What is the advantage of DeepSeek over ChatGPT in education?
A. It seeks deeper into resources. B. It provides entertainment content.
C. It meets students’ individual needs. D. It is more popular in American schools.
9. How is paragraph 3 developed?
A. By listing people’s opinions. B. By giving an example.
C. By defining some concepts. D. By making an explanation.
10. What may be the author’s attitude towards DeepSeek and ChatGPT?
A. DeepSeek suits students better. B. They are future competitors.
C. ChatGPT fails to handle tasks. D. They can make up for each other.
11. What does the underlined word “embrace” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Accept. B. Control C. Teach. D. Improve.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. A

Waiting around for others to show you love might be the wrong approach if you’re in need of a pick-me-up. New research led by scientists at Penn State reveals that if you want to feel more loved in your daily life, start expressing love to others first. Strangely, the research found out, feeling loved doesn’t automatically make us more likely to express love to others.
For four weeks, researchers tracked 52 adults as they went about their daily lives, asking them six times per day to report how loved they felt and how much love they had expressed since their last check-in. The team uncovered what they call the “dynamics (动态) of love”; essentially, how giving and receiving love influence each other over time.
When participants reported expressing more love, they consistently felt more loved themselves in the hours that followed. But when people felt particularly loved, they didn’t become more likely to express love to others afterward. In fact, the data showed a tiny decrease in expressed love following moments of feeling loved.
The study also revealed that feelings of being loved are remarkably persistent (持久的). While expressions of appreciation and gratitude tend to be short behavioral moments, the warm glow of feeling loved can last for hours and participants who experienced this reported higher levels of happiness in their lives.
The researchers suggest that love in everyday life is a skill that can be developed. Just like learning to play an instrument, the ability to give and receive love might improve with practice and awareness. The next time you’re feeling disconnected or unloved, consider this: the path to feeling more loved might begin with expressing more love to others.
12. How was the research carried out?
A. By studying people’s family life. B. By giving out questionnaires.
C. By inviting adults to a lab. D. By interviewing participants.
13. What happened when people felt loved according to the study?
A. They felt more valued. B. They offered more love.
C. They sought more care. D. They expressed less love.
14. How did the lasting feeling of being loved benefit people?
A. It changes people’s behavior. B. It brings out gratitude.
C. It makes people feel happy. D. It helps people live longer.
15. What does the author try to say by mentioning “playing an instrument” in the last paragraph?
A. The ability to give love can be practiced. B. Learning to play an instrument is hard.
C. Expressing yourself is key to success. D. Giving love depends on receiving love.
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. C 15. A

Life in senior high schools can be exciting, but also tiring. ___16___ Therefore, it’s easy to forget things, especially in the morning when you’re still a bit sleepy. How can you reduce stress levels and make sure you leave home feeling unhurried and prepared? Here are some tips for creating a productive, focused and energizing morning routine.
Prepare the night before
The best way to ensure your morning runs smoothly is to prepare for it the night before. ___17___ Select books and check you have the essentials, like reading glasses. Lay out your uniform. And if you take a packed lunch, check whether it’s ready.
___18___
Some people rise very easily, but others take more time to feel awake. Build extra time into your routine if you find mornings hard. If you have an alarm clock, try to get up as soon as it goes off. Doing something right away can help you feel awake. You could also do some stretches as you listen to a song.
Do essential tasks in order
There are a few things you need to do in the morning. To build a routine, it can be helpful to do these in the same order each day. Examples are taking a shower, cleaning your teeth, dressing and checking your school bag. If you’re forgetful, have a list pinned up so you can check things off as you go. ___19___
Eat a good breakfast
Not everyone feels hungry when they wake, but this changes when you start moving — such as walking to school. After sleep, your body has been without food for a long time. The word “breakfast” reflects this — it’s a meal you use to “break” your “fast” (a fast is a period of time where you don’t eat). ___20___ Foods like bread or porridge provide energy. Have a drink, too.
A. Wake yourself your way.
B. Early to bed and early to rise.
C. Your brain can feel overloaded.
D. Soon it will become second nature.
E. Eating something tops up your fuel tank.
F Skipping breakfast increases the risk of heart diseases.
G. Check your timetable and pack what you need for school.

第Ⅱ卷
第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
Last year, I volunteered at Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai. It was my first time volunteering in a foreign country.
Some visitors hesitated to approach me, likely assuming I couldn’t speak Chinese. To break the ice, I greeted everyone with a big smile and said ___36___ Chinese, “Welcome, how can I help you?” Many were surprised ___37___ (hear) me speak fluently.
One family stood out. They had traveled all the way from Shaanxi. As they passed by, their little son ___38___ (shout), “Waiguoren!” — meaning “foreigner” in Chinese. I smiled and asked if they needed help. The father came closer, seeming greatly curious about me and asked many thoughtful questions. One of them was why many Africans eat with their hands instead of ___39___ (use) chopsticks. I explained it’s part of our culture. He even praised my teeth and asked if I used any whitening products. I told him they were ___40___ (natural) like that. He seemed ___41___ (impress).
In return, I asked about his hometown, Shaanxi. His face lit up as he spoke with pride. He told me about its significance along ___42___ ancient Silk Road and how it’s considered one of the ___43___ (birthplace) of Chinese civilization. He talked about the city of Xi’an, ___44___ was the capital of 13 dynasties and is famous for the Terracotta Warriors (兵马俑).
That experience reminded me how ____45____ (power) a smile and an open mind can be in bridging cultures. In that brief interaction, we built a connection — one question, one laugh, and one story at a time.

【38题详解】

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last week, I went to a huge chain store. It’s so big I usually end up overwhelmed before finding what I’m looking for; even the parking lot is bigger than I’d like. When I go, I park beside a stray shopping cart so I can put Phillip, who is two years old, into the shopping cart and have Teresa, who is five, walk beside me into the store. When we reach the entryway, we swap to a two-child cart so they can both ride.
It was a typical shopping trip. We looked at dog food, pool toys, children’s shoes, and sweatpants in both girls and boys sections. Teresa eventually decided she wanted to walk and I agreed. Besides, those two-kid carts were hard enough to steer with two children in them; with one child, it was easier to control. When I’d had enough, we headed toward the front with a bag of dog food and a T-shirt to color for Grandma for Mother’s Day.
After putting our purchases on the check-out counter, I realized I no longer had my purse. I’d put my kids in the second cart but left my purse in the first! So I went back to the entrance, holding Phillip in my arms and leading Teresa by the hand. The greeter remembered me leaving my purse; he had taken it to customer service. Customer service remembered it, but had locked it in an office. They had to find the person with the right key, so it took a bit of time to recover it. After about 15 minutes’ waiting, I finally got my purse back. I pulled out some notes, and handed them to the manager of the customer service to show my gratitude. But he turned me down.
Paragraph 1:
While saying “thank you” repeatedly, I realized Teresa was no longer at my side.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
I took her into my arms and planted multiple kisses in her cheeks.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
While saying “thank you” repeatedly, I realized Teresa was no longer at my side. I went bananas. My mind went blank. I shouted loudly, “Teresa! Where are you? Come back to Mama!” My shouts drew the attention of all shoppers, who looked in this direction, some with pity in their eyes, others looking annoyed. The manager of the customer service sent out some security members in search of her. Five minutes inched by, but still no sign of her. Suddenly, Teresa appeared, holding the hand of a stranger. I rushed over with Philip in my arms.
I took her into my arms and planted multiple kisses in her cheeks. She burst into tears, so did Philip and I. “Are you OK? Where did you go? Don’t do that again!” I yelled at her. “I wanted to buy you a gift for Mother’s Day but I was lost. Sorry, Mom.” I stood up and thanked the stranger a million times. Getting back to our car, I double checked everything, making sure I didn’t make another mistake. What an experience! In the chain of disasters, many strangers reached out to help. Knowing there are so many good people out there is the best Mother’s Day gift I have ever received.

A. Timely re-studying. B. Repeated learning.
C. Designing activities. D. Working with others.

4. What inspired Boyan Slat to deal with plastic problems?

8 What is the advantage of DeepSeek over ChatGPT in education?
A. Accept. B. Control C. Teach. D. Improve.
D
F. Skipping breakfast increases the risk of heart diseases.
G. Check your timetable and pack what you need for school.

Last year, I volunteered at Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai. It was my first time volunteering in a foreign country.
Some visitors hesitated to approach me likely assuming I couldn’t speak Chinese.

第二节(满分25分)

Paragraph 2:
I took her into my arms and planted multiple kisses in her cheeks.
