Your great adventure is about to begin. It is a time when you can challenge yourself to improve. Some senior high students are invited to share their secrets and advice. Wang Zanduo, 17, Hebei One of the most important things for seniors is to learn to get along with others. We all know nobody is perfect. Getting along with others takes patience and understanding. You should always respect others’ differences and make new friends with people sharing common interests. It’s also a time to learn to keep your temper (脾气) under control. A hot temper cannot solve any problems, but patience can. Sun Xiuyuan, 16, Shandong To enjoy your high school life, I would say that you don’t want to stress yourself out. Senior years provide you with more chances to explore who you are and what you want to do in the future. I really enjoy doing extracurricular activities and community service. My experiences of joining a singing club and a computer programming club, as well as volunteering, have encouraged me to search for the unknown and find more fun and warmth in the world. Try things you are not familiar with, and remember, no matter what your talents are, you can always go beyond yourself. Zhao Yuebei, 18, Hainan It’s true that senior year means a lot more work. Don’t worry! A very useful study method is the mind map to help organize information. Creating your own system of knowledge is important. It plays a key role especially in the review stage of the final year. You can start by writing down a key concept (概念) in the center of a page, then add related points and ideas around it. I have benefited a lot from this method since it pushes me to review and organize all my knowledge. 21. According to Wang Zanduo, how can you get along well with others? A. Making efforts to become perfect. B Being patient and understanding. C. Trying to be different from others. D. Developing the same interest as others. 22. What does Sun Xiuyuan advise you to do? A. To put yourself under no stress. B. To do what you want to. C. To become a helpful volunteer. D. To try some new things. 23. What is Zhao Yuebei talking about? A. Learning strategies. B. Some past experiences. C. System of knowledge. D. High school’s final year. B Life can be challenging, particularly for people with autism (自闭症). It is a disorder that does not have one single cause and can take many forms. Most often, it creates difficulty in communicating and interacting with others. Severe autism may leave someone unable to speak entirely or function without assistance. But many people with autism have led rewarding or even outstanding lives. One such person is Haley Moss. As a three-year-old, Haley was able to do difficult tasks such as finishing large puzzles. However, she couldn’t say simple words like “Mommy.” The concerned parents took her to a doctor. After careful examination, the doctors diagnosed (诊断) her as having autism. At the time, the family was given some extremely negative news. “My parents were told that I would be lucky to have friends or even hold a minimum wage job,” Haley said. Yet, by getting professional help, Haley was able to join regular school classes at four. She did quite well at school, although with her poor social skills, it was hard for her to make friends. Eventually, Haley became so successful that she made history. After graduating from the University of Miami, she got hired by a law firm and became the first autistic lawyer in Florida. Being a lawyer wasn’t her first choice of career, though. Previous to going to law school, she studied psychology (心理学) and considered becoming a psychologist to help others with autism. However, Haley discovered she didn’t enjoy the science classes, so she decided that becoming a lawyer would fit her interests better. In addition to being a legal professional, Haley has also published books and has a talent for painting. Most definitely, Haley has far exceeded those original low expectations of her and proven the experts wrong. In short, she has become a role model for others with autism. 24. What can be inferred about autism according to paragraph 1? A. It affects people in different ways. B. It leads to the loss of speech function. C. It is a disorder that can be easily cured. D. It prevents people from leading successful lives. 25. What negative prediction did Haley’s parents receive from the doctor? A Haley would never learn to speak. B. Haley would struggle with puzzles. C. Haley would fail to graduate from school. D. Haley might not have friends or hold a basic job. 26. Why did Haley choose to become a lawyer instead of a psychologist? A. She thought psychology too difficult to learn. B. She hoped to become the first autistic lawyer. C. She wanted to help people with autism as a lawyer. D. She realized entering the field of law better suited her interests. 27. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. A Career in Law: The Journey of Haley Moss. B. Overcoming Challenges: The Story of Autism. C. Understanding Autism: Causes and Challenges. D. Haley Moss: Overcoming Autism and Making History. C It’s 1:45 a.m, and 21-year-old Thomas Murphy is studying for an important exam. To stay awake, he’s had two cups of coffee in the last three hours and is now downing a popular energy drink which also has caffeine. Caffeine is found in many of the foods and drinks we have, but is it good for us? Charles Czeisler, a scientist and sleep expert at Harvard Medical School, believes that caffeine causes us to lose sleep. “Without enough sleep — the typical eight hours — the human body will not work at its best, physically, mentally, or emotionally.” Too often, Czeisler says, we take in caffeine to stay awake, which later makes it impossible for us to get the rest we need. A number of scientists believe that regular caffeine use causes physical dependence. Heavy caffeine users show similar behaviors. For example, they get mild to severe headaches, or they feel tired or sad when they can’t have a caffeinated drink. To reduce or stop these feelings, users must take in caffeine, which is characteristic of drug addiction. Although there are worries, the general opinion in the scientific field is that caffeine is not dangerous when one or two small cups of coffee per day are drunk. Furthermore, a lot of current research goes against long-held negative beliefs about caffeine, and suggests that it may, in fact, have health benefits. For example, studies have shown that caffeine can help with pain and help improve one’s mood. Research has also shown that some caffeinated drinks can help the body fight a number of illnesses, including certain types of cancer. Caffeine’s behavioral effects are real, but most often mild. Getting that burst of energy, of course, is why many of the world’s most popular drinks contain caffeine. Whether it’s a student drinking coffee before class or a businessperson enjoying tea with lunch, humankind’s favorite stimulant (兴奋剂) is at work every day, all over the world. 28. What does the underlined word “downing” mean in paragraph 1? A. Holding. B. Decreasing. C. Drinking. D. Quitting. 29. Which statement would sleep expert Charles Czeisler probably agree with? A. The type of caffeine will affect people’s sleep. B. Heavy caffeine intake will cause drug addiction. C. It’s a good idea to have caffeine if people want to stay lively. D. Regular caffeine use will make it difficult for people to get enough sleep. 30. What is the author’s attitude towards caffeine consumption? A Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Unconcerned. 31. What is the text mainly about? A. The dangers of caffeine intake. B. The effects of taking in caffeine. C. Healthy and unhealthy caffeine products. D. Recent changes in caffeine intake. D Almost anyone who has read a travel brochure about Africa has heard of a story——that elephants can get drunk by eating the fermented (发酵) marula fruit rotting (腐烂) on the ground. Books have even been written to prove the truth of the event. But a study published in the journal Physiological and Biochemical Zoology tells a very different story Steve Morris, a biologist at the University of Bristol in England and an author of the study, says there is nothing in the biology of either the African elephant or the marula fruit to support the stories. Morris says, “People just want to believe in drunken elephants.” The marula tree, a member of the same family as the mango, grows widely in Africa. Its sweet, yellow fruit is used for making jam, wine and beer. “The first mistake of the drunken-elephant theory is that it’s unlikely that an elephant would eat the fruit if it were rotten,” Morris says. “Elephants eat the fruit right off the tree, not when it’s rotten on the ground,” he explains. Other experts add that if an elephant were to eat the fruit on the ground, it wouldn’t wait for the fruit to ferment. Michelle Gadd, an African wildlife specialist, says that elephants and many other animals, including birds and monkeys, are too fond of marula fruit to let it rot. If fermented fruit on the ground is out of the question, so is the concept that the fruit could ferment in the stomach of elephants, according to the study authors. Food takes between 12 and 46 hours to pass through an elephant’s digestive (消化的) system, the authors point out, which is not enough for the fruit to ferment. Supposing that this happened, it’s still highly impossible that the food would produce enough alcohol(酒精) to make an elephant drunk. Through calculations of body weight, elephant digestion rates, and other factors, the authors suggest that it would take about 1.9 litres of alcohol to make an elephant drunk. 32. What can we learn from the text? A. African elephants don’t like to eat marula fruit at all. B. It is not easy to find marula fruit in the wild in Africa. C. Marula fruit can be made into food or drinks for people. D. Birds and monkeys in Africa like to eat rotten marula fruit. 33. According to Paragraph 6, how long does marula fruit probably take to ferment? A. About 12 hours. B. About 34 hours. C. More than 46 hours. D. Between 12 to 46 hours. 34. Which of the following is Mr. Morris’s opinion? A. Elephants prefer mangoes to the marula fruit. B. Elephants will not eat the marula fruit if it is rotten. C. The marula tree and the mango belong to different families. D. There are several connections between elephants and the marula fruit. 35. B. Being patient and understanding. B. A. Haley would never learn to speak. A 25. D 26. D 27. 根据第一段“Life can be challenging, particularly for people with autism (自闭症). It is a disorder that does not have one single cause and can take many forms. Most often, it creates difficulty in communicating and interacting with others. Severe autism may leave someone unable to speak entirely or function without assistance.(生活可能是充满挑战的,特别是对于自闭症患者。它是一种没有单一原因的疾病,可以表现为多种形式。在大多数情况下,它会造成与他人沟通和互动的困难。严重的自闭症可能会让一个人完全无法说话或无法在没有帮助的情况下生活。)”可推知,自闭症对人的影响是不同的,有的人可能无法说话,有的人可能只是社交困难,即它对不同的人有着不同的影响。故选A项。 根据第二段“‘My parents were told that I would be lucky to have friends or even hold a minimum wage job,’ Haley said.(Haley说:‘我父母被告知,我能有朋友或甚至能做一份最低工资的工作就算幸运了。’)” 根据第三段“However, Haley discovered she didn’t enjoy the science classes, so she decided that becoming a lawyer would fit her interests better.(然而,Haley发现她不喜欢科学课,所以她决定成为一名律师更符合她的兴趣。)” 通读全文,结合第三段中的“Eventually, Haley became so successful that she made history. After graduating from the University of Miami, she got hired by a law firm and became the first autistic lawyer in Florida.(最终,Haley取得了如此巨大的成功,创造了历史。从迈阿密大学毕业后,她被一家律师事务所录用,成为佛罗里达州第一位自闭症律师。)”可知,本文主要讲述了Haley Moss克服自闭症,创造历史的故事。故D选项“Haley Moss: Overcoming Autism and Making History(Haley Moss:克服自闭症,创造历史)”最符合文章标题。故选D项。 C It’s 1:45 a.m, and 21-year-old Thomas Murphy is studying for an important exam. A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Unconcerned. 31. What is the text mainly about? A. The dangers of caffeine intake. B. The effects of taking in caffeine. C. Healthy and unhealthy caffeine products. D. Recent changes in caffeine intake. C 29. D 30. C 31. 根据第一段“It’s 1: 45 a.m, and 21-year-old Thomas Murphy is studying for an important exam. To stay awake, he’s had two cups of coffee in the last three hours and is now downing a popular energy drink which also has caffeine. (凌晨1点45分,21岁的Thomas Murphy正在为一场重要的考试而学习。为了保持清醒,他在过去三小时内已经喝了两杯咖啡,现在正 一种也含有咖啡因的流行能量饮料)”可知,Thomas Murphy熬夜复习考试,为了保持清醒,他喝了咖啡之后,又灌下了一杯能量饮料。划线单词downing表示“喝”。故选C项。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Too often, Czeisler says, we take in caffeine to stay awake, which later makes it impossible for us to get the rest we need. (Czeisler说,我们常常摄入咖啡因来保持清醒,但这之后会让我们无法得到所需的休息)”可知,睡眠专家Charles Czeisler可能会同意经常摄入咖啡因会使人们难以获得足够的睡眠。故选D项。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“A number of scientists believe that regular caffeine use causes physical dependence. (许多科学家认为,经常摄入咖啡因会导致身体依赖)”,第四段“Despite these concerns, the general opinion in the scientific field is that caffeine is not dangerous when one or two small cups of coffee per day are consumed. (尽管存在这些担忧,但科学界的普遍观点是,每天喝一到两小杯咖啡,咖啡因是没有危险的)”以及最后一段“Caffeine’s behavioral effects are real, but most often mild. D Almost anyone who has read a travel brochure about Africa has heard of a story——that elephants can get drunk by eating the fermented (发酵) marula fruit rotting (腐烂) on the ground. Books have even been written to prove the truth of the event. But a study published in the journal Physiological and Biochemical Zoology tells a very different story. Steve Morris, a biologist at the University of Bristol in England and an author of the study, says there is nothing in the biology of either the African elephant or the marula fruit to support the stories. 35. What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph probably refer to? A. elephants getting drunk B. elephants eating rotten marula fruit C. elephants eating marula trees directly D. marula fruit fermenting in elephants’ stomachs 【答案】32. C 33. C 34. B 35. 根据第四段“Its sweet, yellow fruit is used for making jam, wine and beer. (它香甜的黄色果实可用于制作果酱、葡萄酒和啤酒。)”可知,马鲁拉果能被制成人类可食用的食物或可饮用的饮品。故选C项。 【33题详解】 推理判断题。根据第六段“Food takes between 12 and 46 hours to pass through an elephant’s digestive (消化的) system, the authors point out, which is not enough for the fruit to ferment.(作者指出,食物通过大象消化系统需要12到46小时,这段时间不足以让果实发酵。)” 根据第四段““The first mistake of the drunken-elephant theory is that it’s unlikely that an elephant would eat the fruit if it were rotten,” Morris says. “Elephants eat the fruit right off the tree, not when it’s rotten on the ground,” he explains.(莫里斯说:“‘大象醉酒’理论的第一个错误在于,如果果实腐烂了,大象不太可能会吃。” 他解释道:“大象会直接吃树上的果实,而不是吃地上腐烂的。”)”可知,莫里斯认为大象不会吃腐烂的马鲁拉果。故选B项。 【35题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第六段“If fermented fruit on the ground is out of the question, so is the concept that the fruit could ferment in the stomach of elephants, according to the study authors. (该研究的作者表示,若地面上的发酵水果都不可能(产生某种情况),那么“水果能在大象胃里发酵”这一说法也同样不成立。)”和第七段“Supposing that this happened, it’s still highly impossible that the food would produce enough alcohol to make an elephant drunk. (假设 this发生了,食物产生的酒精也仍极不可能让大象醉酒。)”可知,this指代前文提到的“马鲁拉果在大象胃里发酵”这一情况。故选D项。 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题 2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从选项中选出最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 A dictionary is a book which explains the meanings of words.
