One year, as Father’s Day was coming up, David’s wife and kids wanted to do something special for him. They knew he worked hard and hardly took breaks, so they decided to plan a surprise weekend party at a nearby lake.
They packed everything they needed for the trip, including David’s favorite snacks and games. As they drove to the lake, David had no idea what his family planned for him. When they got to the lake, they were greeted by a lovely cabin (小屋) with trees all around it. David was so surprised.
They spent the weekend fishing, swimming and having fun together. As the sun set, David’s family gathered around him. They gave him a small gift—a photo of them all together at the lake. David was so touched. He realized that his family was the most important thing to him.
From then on, David started to spend more time with his family. He left work earlier, had dinner with his family and planned more outings together. He understood that being a good dad wasn’t just about supporting his family financially (经济上), but also about being there in their lives.

Bad news: The world’s oceans have become darker over the past 20 years. A new study shows that between 2003 and 2022, 21 percent of our oceans became darker. This has made the photic zone (透光带) less deep by more than 50 meters.
The photic zone is the top layer (层) of the ocean where sunlight can reach. It’s usually about 200 meters deep. Ninety percent of sea life lives in this zone because they need sunlight for photosynthesis (光合作用), which is important for their lives. Sea animals also use light for many other things, such as finding food.
Darker oceans can lead to serious problems. As the photic zone becomes smaller, the living space for sea life becomes smaller, too. This means sea animals need to fight more with each other for food.
More importantly, the darkening of large ocean areas is a “worrying trend (趋势)”, because it can hurt the food chain (食物链) in the sea, change where sea animals live and make it harder for the ocean to help control the climate (气候) and support life.
Although scientists don’t know why the sea is getting darker, they have some ideas. Rain might carry sediment (沉积物) from the coast into the sea, helping plankton (浮游生物) grow and stopping light from reaching the ocean.
31. How has the photic zone in the oceans changed over the past 20 years?
A. It has become smaller. B. It has become deeper. C. It has become brighter.
32. Why is the photic zone important for the oceans?
A It protects sea animals from danger.
B. It is where most sea animals live.
C. It gives most of the food to sea animals.
33. What is one of the results of this change?
A. More animals will move to deeper oceans.
B. There will be less food for sea animals.
C. Photosynthesis won’t happen in the photic zone.
34 Why is the darkening of large ocean areas a “worrying trend (趋势)” ?
A. It is a trend hard to control.
B. It doesn’t influence sea life much.
C. It could hurt sea life and the climate.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Where sea animals will live in the future.
B. What might make the oceans become darker.
C. Where scientists study changes in the oceans.
(D)

____37____ Step outside, find a park, choose a tree that catches your eye, open your arms, hug it and quietly feel the connection.
But it’s not just about hugging, looking at trees can bring people joy and a sense of spiritual strength (精神力量). Han Mingzhe, a 30-year-old nature teacher, enjoys taking teenagers to study the magic of trees.
“Although looking at trees is a simple activity, ____38____” said Han. You can then tell the difference between single (单个的) and compound (复合的) leaves, even touch and smell them. If you come across a tree in bloom (开花), ____39____
You can also follow a tree’s life journey, from a seed (种子) to a full-grown tree. ____40____ Trees help us to experience more.
A. You can feel the time by touching the tree with your eyes closed.
B. focus on the flower’s shape color, and structure (结构) to know what kind of tree it is.
C. there are quite a few things you can do.
D. They believe it can help them feel less stressed, as well as find joy and relaxation.

Dear Mary,
Thank you for your email! I’m doing well. Now let me tell you something about my life.
During the summer vacation, I visited Beijing with my parents. We saw the Great Wall and the Palace Museum. They were amazing! I also read some interesting books, like Harry Potter. It was fantastic!
The new term has started. I’m now in Grade 8. The subjects are more difficult, so I will work harder. I plan to preview my lessons before class and review them after class. I believe I can do better. I’m also taking part in more activities. At school, I joined the sports meet. After school, I sometimes do community service as a volunteer. I enjoy these activities very much.
That’s all about my new life. How about you? Please write back soon.
Best wishes,
Lucy
