Sometimes she knitted (编织) hats for babies, and at other times, she cooked chicken soup for sick neighbors. Therefore, I wasn’t surprised when one evening my mother announced she had undertaken a new project. “I am going to telephone seniors” said my mother. “Every night? But you don’t even know these people.” “It doesn’t matter,” she said. “What’s important is that I listen.” I was sixteen years old and couldn’t understand why my mother was willing to spend her evenings talking to strangers. She had friends and my two older sisters to call if she felt lonely. “They will talk your ear off. Some people didn’t even stop to catch breath,” I said. My attitude didn’t stop my mother’s enthusiasm for the project. That evening, she settled on the sofa and dialed. For a while, I listened as she asked the woman on the other line about her day and what she had eaten for dinner. When she finished the call, I said, “Why do you care whether she had cookies or rice pudding for dessert?” My mother grasped one of my hands and gave it a slight squeeze. “I’m the only person she talked to today.” It took me more than thirty years to fully understand the meaning of that statement. Now, as my mother is nearing eighty, I find myself thinking about those nightly calls she used to make. I am often the only person who telephones my mother, and sometimes I’m the only person she speaks to all day. I ask her what she cooked for dinner, but mostly I just listen as she describes a walk she took, or how her dog Lucky stole foods from the refrigerator. I realize that my mother’s calls were life lines that ensured housebound seniors remained connected to the world. Without her, their world would have been empty. 4. What is the mother’s purpose of calling the seniors? A. To care about their life. B. To know what they eat for dinner. C. To make them feel less lonely. D. To teach them how to make desserts. 5. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. They will talk all the time on the phone. B. They will blame others’ wrong doings. C. They will be tired of listening to others. D. They will make you feel really satisfied. 6. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. The author started to telephone seniors as her mother. B. The author realized the value of her mother’s efforts. C. The author’s mother preferred to live alone. D. The author’s mother still remains disconnected to the world. 7 What is the suitable title for the passage? A. Call parents often, love them always B. Mother’s evenings C. A new project D. Nightly calls, lifeline calls C Pigs may be more intelligent than people thought, as shown in a study where pigs used a joystick (操纵杆) and played a video game. Researchers used 2-year-old Panepinto micro pigs called Ebony and Ivory, as well as Hamlet and Omelet, 3-month-old Yorkshire pigs. Researchers first taught these pigs how to play with a joystick, teaching them the word, “joystick”. Next, on the words “watch the screen”, they learned how to watch targets (目标) on the screen. Of course, praise was given to the active pigs winning a game. During the experiment, all pigs performed well. As they became more successful, the level of difficulty increased, just like in human video games! At first, the pigs had to hit a three-walled target which was then reduced to two walls and then one wall. All pigs did well with the three-walled targets; however, the Panepinto pigs performed better on the more difficult levels. One disadvantage for the Yorkshire pigs was that they simply grew so large that they could no longer fit in their test. After a few months, Omelet and Hamlet were taken away from the experiment. Dr. Candace Croney, a leading animal behavior scientist in Cambridge, said, “The findings of the study are important because what we do to pigs matters to them. It would be nice for people to realize how special pigs are, and how much more intelligent they may be than we recognized. The researchers said that the pigs’ actions were deliberate (故意的). This led them to believe that pigs were able to, successfully do new tasks. “It may encourage other researchers to use touch screens and computer technology to study pigs intelligence in the future,” Croney said. The team hopes this type of research will make people pay more attention to this farm animal and show people how they can change the lives of animals. 8. What did the researchers do to the pigs at the beginning? A. They studied their habits. B. They gave them enough food. C. They trained them to play a game. D. They gave them special names. 9. What could we find about the pigs in the experiment? A. They could keep focused for a long time. B. They tried hard to win the games for praise. C. They did all the tasks without any difficulty. D. They got harder tasks as their performance improved. 10. What made Omelet and Hamlet unsuitable for the experiment later? A. Their intelligence. B. Their body size. C. Their power. D. Their weight. 11. What is Croney’s attitude towards the results of the study? A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Uncertain D. Surprised. D Studying English for an hour once a week isn’t usually enough to make any real progress. The best way to quickly improve your English is to spend at least a few minutes practicing every day. Get yourself concentrated as much as possible every time you study, and challenge yourself to listen to , read ,and even say things in English that you think might be too difficult for you. The right attitude can make the difference between failure and success. Stop thinking of yourself as someone who is learning English, and start thinking of yourself as someone who speaks English. It’s a small change, but it will make you feel more confident and help you to use the English you already know more effectively. This also means you need to start thinking in English. If you want to say the word “apple” in English, for example, right now you probably think of the word in your native language first, and then try to think of the correct word in English. Instead, try imaging a picture of an apple, and then just think the English word “apple”. Real fluency happens when you stop mentally translating conversations. When most students listen to a native English-speaker, they focus on understanding what all the words mean. This is definitely important, but there is a lot more you can learn from listening. Try listening not just to what the words mean, but to how the person says them. Notice which words the person links together in a sentence, or when they say “ya” instead of “you”. Try to remember these details the next time you speak and your English will begin to sound more natural. 12 What can we do if we want to make progress in English learning ? A. We need to practice English every day. B. We should study English for an hour once a week. C. We must be concentrated as much as possible all the time. D. We should challenge ourselves to speak at a higher level. 13. What can we infer from the text? A. With more words we can speak English fluently B We have to read enough before speaking C. Confidence comes from the right attitude. D. Imagination is very important in speaking English. 14. What does it take to speak English like a native speaker? A. Sharp observation B. Rich imagination C. Translating ability D. Careful reading 15. What can be the best title of the text? A. Making Your English Sound Natural B. Tips on Learning English Well C. Challenging Difficulties in Learning English D. Learning that you are about to pay a visit to a Chinese friend and confused about the Chinese customs, I am writing to put forward some advice. Firstly, I would like to suggest that you arrive 5 to 10 minutes earlier, which is common in Chinese traditional culture. Secondly, if I were you, I would bring some appropriate gifts with me, such as souvenirs from my own country. Besides, table manners are also what you should pay attention to. For example, you are not supposed to stick your chopsticks into your food. Instead, laying them on your dish is a smart choice. If you have any other problems, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
