The paper we know today did not appear until two thousand years ago. It was created in China. No one knows who first invented it. But history does tell us about one man who improved the process and this man was Cai Lun (62-121), who was born during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220).
Cai Lun often paid visits to the countryside workshops when he took office as Shang-fang Ling an officer in control of making instruments and weapons. Inspired by women who raised silkworms (蚕), he used many materials to make paper, such as bark (树皮), pieces of net normally used to catch fish, and pieces of used cloth. He broke these materials down into very small pieces and finally produced a kind of paper.
In 105, Cai Lun showed his paper-making process and pieces of paper to Emperor He of Han (汉和帝). His way to make paper was strongly praised by the Emperor and it soon got popular. The paper made in this way, known as Cai Hou Paper, was used across the country.
Today, Cai Lun is still remembered as the inventor of the paper-making process, one of the Four Great Inventions of China. He is regarded as the father of the modern paper industry. In 2007, Cai Lun was listed as one of the “Best Inventors in Recorded History” by the Time Magazine. His paper-making process was specially shown in the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
