Last Saturday, my brother, Aiden, and I went to pick out a Mother’s Day gift for Mum. But on our way home, a boy on skates ran into (撞到) me. My gift box flew from my hands and fell to the ground. The skater got up, said sorry and left.
Aiden picked up the box and opened it. The drinking glasses inside were broken. We saved our money for weeks to buy the glasses with red flowers on them for Mother’s Day. We knew Mum would love those glasses.
We knew we had to think of something fast. “Maybe we can make a gift for Mum.” Aiden’s eyes shone brightly. “At school, we cut out pictures and glued them on paper. We could make her some Mother’s Day cards.”
“Good thinking,” I said.
The next morning, Aiden and I brought Mum to the living room. We handed her the cards we made out of bright red paper with pictures of red flowers. “Here are the Mother’s Day gifts for you. Look, Mum! Every card has a riddle (谜语) on it with the answer on the back. You always love riddles,” Aiden said.
When Aiden saw tears on Mum’s face, he shouted, “I knew this was a bad idea.”
“Aiden and Emily, I love your gifts. You know I love red flowers. And I’ll love the riddles. I’m crying because you’ve made me so happy.”

For over 200 years, a group of goats lived on Santa Bárbara, an island (岛) in the northeast of Brazil. There was no fresh water on the island, but these goats survived. They lived there and moved around. Also, many of the goats had two babies at a time. That shows they were healthy. That’s really hard to believe!
No one knows for sure how the goats got to the island at first. Scientists think colonisers (殖民者) brought them to the island. They kept goats for food. When they left the island they left the goats behind.
Scientists watched the goats for many years, but they never saw the goats drink any water. This makes them wonder, “How did these goats live there for more than 200 years?” They have different guesses about how the goats stayed alive. Some think they learnt to drink seawater. Others think they ate a plant with lots of water in it.
Not long ago, a wildlife protection group (野生动物保护组织) took the last 27 goats away from the island. They did this because the goats ate too much and caused problems for seven kinds of seabirds there. But they didn’t kill the goats. They gave them to scientists to study. Scientists hope to find out the reason why the goats could live with no water. Then they may come up with ideas to help animals living in dry places.

Around 10,000 years ago, people in Hunan started to grow rice. How exactly did they cook rice back then? We don’t know for sure. However, we now know how the rice might have tasted 2,000 years ago.
A team of students from Hunan University worked together to recreate (再现) the taste of rice during the Western Han Dynasty. The students first learnt about ancient rice-cooking from Shi Fang, an ancient text. They decided to bring this ancient flavour (味道) back to life.
Recreating ancient rice-cooking was not easy. The text is so old that some parts of it are broken. Also, today’s rice and cooking pots are different from those in ancient times. However, these didn’t stop the students. With the help of their teachers and a cook, they made smart choices. Instead of ancient pots, they used traditional cooking tools (传统炊具) that can still be found in some Chinese villages. Also, the cook helped them find a kind of rice similar to that grown in ancient times.
After many tests, the students found the best way. First, they put the rice in cold water for 30 minutes. Then, they drained (沥干) it and steamed (蒸) it for 20 minutes. After the rice got cold, they added some water and steamed it for another 15 minutes.
The rice they made was not only delicious but also had little sugar. Through this experience the students learnt much about ancient Chinese culture. They hoped to recreate more ancient dishes from Shi Fang.

根据“it’s full of amazing reused...”
根据“they are always ready...”可知,此处考查be ready to do sth“准备做某事”。 故填to turn。

根据“was once...old wooden box”可知,“old wooden box”是可数名词单数,且“old”以元音音素开头。 故填an。
根据“Tom’s friends give him...old things”可知,此处需要一个形容词性物主代词修饰名词“old things”,表示“朋友们的”。“they”的形容词性物主代词“their”符合语境,可体现所属关系。故填their。
故填has。

Through this experience, the students learnt much about ancient Chinese culture. They hoped to recreate more ancient dishes from Shi Fang.
