There is a beautiful dirt track near my house that runs along a river for about 2km. On my finger was a very special ring: I’d only just picked it up from the jeweller’s the day before because I’d had it designed to hold a diamond given to me by my grandmother for my 21st birthday. I looked down at my ring as I began my walk, feeling as sunny as the day. Imagine my sadness when I looked again at the end of the track and saw a gaping hole in the setting where the diamond should have been. It was missing. Panicked, I started back along the path, looking frantically for the stone. In my heart, I knew how hopeless my search was. The track was long, stony and covered with leaves and debris (碎片). As I scanned the ground, crying and extremely worried, I met an older gentleman out for a walk. “What’s the matter, love?” he asked kindly. “Lost something?” I explained about the missing diamond and showed him the hole in my ring, He whistled. “That’s hard to find. Tell you what, love, I walk along this track every day, I’ll keep my eyes open for it.” I thanked him, expecting nothing, but told him my husband often walks our dogs along the path if he ever found something. A few days later, my husband met the older man on the path. “Guess what?” he said. “I found your diamond!” Unbelievably, he’d found the tiny stone and was delighted to hand the diamond back to my husband, saying casually. “Lucky I found it — I only have 50 percent vision in one eye.” When my husband offered him money for his trouble, he refused it. He could have easily kept the diamond, or sold it, as it’s worth several thousand dollars, but, thanks to this man, I’ll spend the rest of my days trying to do something equally significant for another person. And if I’m ever worried about the state of the human race, all I have to do is look at my ring and remind myself that there are still kind and generous souls out there. 4. What can best describe the old man? A. Rich and generous. B. Kind and honest. C. Careful and brave. D. Patient and modest. 5. What does the underlined word “frantically” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Anxiously. B. Genuinely. C. Excitedly. D. Curiously. 6. What can we learn about the diamond? A. The owner bought it in the jeweller’s. B. It had many different holes in the setting. C. The old man found it with poor eyesight. D. The owner’s husband paid to regain it. 7. What section of a magazine does this text probably come from? A. Life Well Lived. B. The Holiday Season. C. Important Facts. D. The Power of Good. B 5. A 6. C 7. 根据第五段中的“That’s hard to find. In my heart, I knew how hopeless my search was.(我惊慌失措,沿着小路往回走,frantically寻找那颗钻石。在我心里,我知道我的寻找是多么无望。)”可知,作者丢失了珍贵的钻石,内心恐慌且绝望,因此“frantically”在这里意为“焦急地、疯狂地”。故选A项。 根据倒数第二段中的“Lucky I found it — I only have 50 percent vision in one eye.(幸运的是我找到了它——我的一只眼睛只有50%的视力。)” C Close your eyes for a minute and imagine what life would be like if you had a hundred dollars less. The study reports the water sources that typically feed the sea are contributing less and less water. So much so that these sources cannot keep up with evaporation (蒸发). If global temperatures rise by 2°C, the sea’s water levels could drop by 16-32 feet, which means 4 out of 10 ecosystem types unique to the Caspian Sea would disappear completely. The Caspian Sea is home to a variety of life. Six sturgeon (鲟鱼) species live within the sea. In the Caspian Sea, sturgeon typically reside in shallower waters during the summer and fall and lay eggs in the rivers that flow into the sea. A drop in water levels would prevent them from accessing these grounds, which could lead to population decline. The sea is also a hot spot for some seabirds. They usually take shelter in the coastal wetlands, but it’s possible those could dry up as well. The Caspian Sea touches five countries — Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan — and a drop in water levels could seriously impact trade routes vital to the economies of these countries, as low water levels could prevent ships from docking (入港). Besides, the exposed dry seabed is likely to release dust containing industrial pollutants and salt, posing serious threats to human health. A dropping water level could also alter the climate of the region, thus impacting the area’s agriculture. But all hope is not lost. “Some Caspian Sea level decline appears unavoidable,” Simon Goodman from the University of Leeds said in a press release. “However, with the anticipated effects unfolding over a few decades, it should be possible to find ways to protect biodiversity while safeguarding human interests and well being. That might sound like a long timescale, but, given the immense political, legal and practical challenges involved, it is advisable to start action as soon as possible to give the best chance of success.” 12. What is a fundamental driver for the Caspian Sea’s water crisis? A. Reduced inflow of feeder rivers. B. Industrial pollution of coastal plants. C. Increased evaporation of the Caspian Sea. D. Sudden disappearance of the ecosystems. 13. Why are sturgeon populations threatened by the decline of water levels? A. Seabirds compete for their food. B. They lose access to coastal wetlands. C. They can’t reach rivers to reproduce. D. The shallower summer habitats dry up. 14. What could be a likely consequence of the drying process? A. Establishment of trade routes. B. Release of seabed pollutants. C. Expansion of local agriculture. D. Alteration of regional integration. 15. What does Simon Goodman’s suggest to address the problem? A. Local community relocation. B. Resignation to biodiversity loss. C. Emphasis on economic interests. D. Urgent cross-border cooperation. A 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第一段“The study reports the water sources that typically feed the sea are contributing less and less water. So much so that these sources cannot keep up with evaporation (蒸发). (该研究报告称,通常为海洋提供水源的那些水体,其供水量正在逐渐减少。以至于这些水源已经无法满足蒸发的需求了。)”可知,造成里海水资源危机的根本原因是来源河流的水量减少。故选A。 根据第二段“The Caspian Sea is home to a variety of life. (里海是众多生物栖息地。这里有六种鲟鱼种类在里海中繁衍生息。在里海中,鲟鱼通常在夏季和秋季生活在较浅的水域,并在流入海中的河流中产卵。如果水位下降,它们将无法到达这些产卵地,这可能会导致其种群数量减少。)”可知,鲟鱼群体会受到水位下降的影响是因为他们无法到达河流去繁衍后代。故选C。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Besides, the exposed dry seabed is likely to release dust containing industrial pollutants and salt, posing serious threats to human health. (此外,裸露的干燥海床可能会释放出含有工业污染物和盐分的粉尘,对人类健康构成严重威胁。)”可知,干涸过程可能会产生导致海底污染物的释放。故选B。 【15题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“That might sound like a long timescale, but, given the immense political, legal and practical challenges involved, it is advisable to start action as soon as possible to give the best chance of success. (这听起来可能是一个很长的时间跨度,但考虑到其中涉及的巨大的政治、法律和实际方面的挑战,尽早采取行动才是明智之举,这样才能最大程度地增加成功的可能性。)”可知,西蒙·古德曼建议紧急开展跨境合作。故选D。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How Can Volunteering Help You Get a Good Job? Sometimes, by giving just a little, you can get a lot back in return. This couldn’t ring more true for volunteering. Here are just some of the things volunteering can do for your employ ability. ___16___ Employers like to see evidence of practical work experience on your CV (简历) — it tells them that you have the soft skills needed to work as part of a team and are able to handle responsibility. So, if the “work experience” section of your CV is: looking a little bare, volunteering is a great way to flesh it out. Even if the role isn’t super relevant to the job you want after university, so long as there are transferable (可迁移的) skills, it will be valuable for your CV. Introduce you to new people If you are volunteering in the sector you want to eventually work in, it will be a great way for you to network with people who have already broken into the field. ___17___. They’d also make great references to refer future employers to. Help you develop valuable skills ___18___, but getting hands-on experience is key to really being able to transition into employment smoothly. Lectures and seminars can’t really teach you personal skills like leadership, time management, how to best communicate with colleagues or how to act in a professional manner, which are all valuable to employers. ___19___ Boost your confidence You’ll experience so many personal benefits from helping the community or lending a hand for a worthwhile project. ___20___. All of this-as well as the practical experience itself-will boost your confidence, meaning you can approach job applications and interviews with renewed courage and belief in yourself. A. Improve your CV B. Update your interview skills C. Volunteering is a great way to push you ahead D. University prepares you for work academically E. Volunteering can help you develop all of these and plenty more F. It can help give you a fresh sense of purpose and make you feel valued G. Use the opportunity to pick their brains, get insider advice and find out job opportunities 【答案】16. A 17. G 18. D 19. E 20. 根据下文中的“Employers like to see evidence of practical work experience on your CV(简历) — it tells them that you have the soft skills needed to work as part of a team and are able to handle responsibility. So, if the “work experience” section of your CV is: looking a little bare, volunteering is a great way to flesh it out.(雇主喜欢在你的简历上看到实际工作经验的证据。这告诉他们,你具备作为团队成员工作所需的软技能,能够承担责任。所以,如果你简历中的“工作经验”部分是:看起来有点裸露,志愿服务是充实它的好方法。)”可知,本段主要叙述了志愿者的经历能够帮助你丰富简历,故A项“改善你的简历”适合作本段小标题。故选A。 【17题详解】 根据空前“If you are volunteering in the sector you want to eventually work in, it will be a great way for you to network with people who have already broken into the field.(如果你在你想最终工作的行业做志愿者,这将是你与已经进入该领域的人建立联系的好方法。)”及空后“They’d also make great references to refer future employers to.(他们也会为未来的雇主提供很好的参考。)” 【18题详解】 根据空后“but getting hands-on experience is key to really being able to transition into employment smoothly(但获得实践经验是真正能够顺利过渡到就业岗位的关键)”可知,空后强调了实践经验的重要性,前后之间是转折关系,再结合下句“Lectures and seminars can’t really teach you personal skills like leadership, time management, how to best communicate with colleagues or how to act in a professional manner, which are all valuable to employers.(讲座和研讨会并不能真正教会你个人技能,比如领导力、时间管理、如何最好地与同事沟通或如何以专业的方式行事,这些对雇主来说都很有价值。)” 【19题详解】 根据本段小标题“Help you develop valuable skills(帮助你发展有价值的技能)”及空前“Lectures and seminars can’t really teach you personal skills like leadership, time management, how to best communicate with colleagues or how to act in a professional manner, which are all valuable to employers.(讲座和研讨会并不能真正教会你个人技能,比如领导力、时间管理、如何最好地与同事沟通或如何以专业的方式行事,这些对雇主来说都很有价值。)”可知,空处应讲述志愿活动可以帮助获得讲座和研讨会不能做到的东西,E项“志愿活动可以帮助你发展所有这些甚至其他更多的技能”符合题意,all of these指代上文中的“personal skills like leadership, time management, how to best communicate with colleagues or how to act in a professional manner”。故选E。 【20题详解】 根据空前“You’ll experience so many personal benefits from helping the community or lending a hand for a worthwhile project.(你会从帮助社区或帮助一个有价值的项目中获得很多个人利益。)”及空后“All of this-as well as the practical experience itself-will boost your confidence, meaning you can approach job applications and interviews with renewed courage and belief in yourself.(所有这些以及实践经验本身都会增强你的信心,这意味着你可以以新的勇气和对自己的信念来处理求职和面试。)” Have you ever heard of and seen Canadian geese? This competition was of vital importance to her comeback. “If I can win today,” she said to herself, “I can dance on the national stage next month.” Three months ago, her left arm was seriously injured in a car accident. After the medical treatment, she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills. “Hi, Mary,” in rushed her friend Jessica “How is your arm? Is it going to influence your performance?” “I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win the match.” said Mary with a determined look. “Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real well-matched competitor. Come on!” After Jessica left, Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin. “If I don’t try harder, I won’t grasp this chance.” She thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. “Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight?” she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up. A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said “Hi, I’m Linda. I am the next one!” Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. “This is just my competitor. Because of her, I may lose tonight.” Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream, “Oh, God, I can’t find my music tape!” Linda searched her bag but in vain. “It may be missing on the way.” With these words, she then rushed out. Suddenly, Mary caught sight of a black box under the chair where Linda put her bag. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Linda finished her dancing successfully and then came Mary’s turn. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Suddenly, Mary caught sight of a black box under the chair where Linda put her bag. She went over and then opened the box to find Linda’s tape was just inside. At that time, she was in a dilemma, “This is my chance to defeat her.” But on a second thought, she changed her mind, “If I hide it, I will win the competition but I may lose something.” Mary also rushed out to look for Linda. At that moment, Linda came back in low spirits. Mary handed the box to her and said, “Take it easy, we are the best.” Soon, it’s her turn to come on the stage. Linda finished her dancing successfully and then came Mary’s turn. Hearing her name called, Mary walked on the stage with her heart beating faster and faster. She kept reminding herself, “Don’t be nervous. I have been practicing for so long, and I will certainly make it.” But the serious pain in her arm came again when she was performing the most difficult spin. She fell down on the stage. Linda and Jessica rushed over to help her up. Finally, Mary lost the game but she believed she had won everything. 词汇激活 行为类 ①发现:find/discover ②交给:hand/deliver ③表演:perform/act 情绪类 ①左右为难:in a dilemma/difficult to decide /in a bind ②紧张的:nervous/tense 【点睛】[高分句型1]She went over and then opened the box to find Linda’s tape was just inside. 4. D The Caspian Sea, the world’s largest inland water body, is declining, according to a new study published in Communications Earth & Environment. “Some Caspian Sea level decline appears unavoidable” Simon Goodman from the University of Leeds said in a press release. How Can Volunteering Help You Get a Good Job? After the medical treatment, she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills. “Hi, Mary,” in rushed her friend Jessica “How is your arm? 注意:1.续写词数应为150词左右; 2.续写部分分为两段,请在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Suddenly, Mary caught sight of a black box under the chair where Linda put her bag. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Linda finished her dancing successfully and then came Mary’s turn. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
