Nihal's organization,Recycle My Battery, provides recycling bins (7) batteries. This organization has a team of 250 student volunteers around the world. In the past three years, they have (8) (help)to recycle more than 260,000 batteries. Nihal has won many (9) (environment) awards. "My biggest goal is to bring the 15 billion batteries which are (10) (throw) away each year worldwide to zero,"he says.
七、阅读理解。
Seagrass, an underwater plant that grows on the ocean floor, is very important for sea life. It also helps
present global warming by storing carbon--a harmful gas. However, scientists don't know exactly how much is at the bottom of the ocean. With the help of tiger sharks,a team of researchers has discovered the world's largest meadow (grassland) on the seafloor near the Bahamas.
Seagrass meadows are home to many different kinds of fish, shellfish, and so on. Large sea animals, such as sharks, also spend a lot of time there looking for food. Seagrass can grow in very deep and dark water, making it difficult to find. But sharks can dive deep into the water and get to the areas people cannot reach.
After noticing tiger sharks swimming through seagrass off the Bahamas,an American scientist worked with a seagrass expert, trying to map the locations of the plants. The researchers fitted seven tiger sharks with camera. Since tiger sharks swim in groups, they placed satellite tracking tag(卫星跟踪器) on eight other sharks to find out exactly where the animals swam. They collected hours of videos of the tiger sharks swimming through seagrass.
The researchers found more growing near the Bahamas than they expected — in fact, they believe that there is more seagrass there than anywhere else on Earth. The new finding increased the total number of seagrass known to exist by 41%.However,more research is needed to discover the true size of the seagrass meadow.
Scientists often depend on findings from divers and boats to study about the underwater world, but this team found that working with animals improved their understanding. They are now placing cameras on sea turtles to study seagrass in the Red Sea. Hopefully, more mysteries about seagrass will be solved.
(1)What are the scientists studying according to the passage?
A.Sharks.
B.The Bahamas.
C.Seagrass.
D.The Red Sea.
(2)Which underlined word has the same meaning as the underlined word "map" in Paragraph 3?
A.Is there a map of China in the classroom?
B.Amy mapped out her plans on the new project.
C.It is the West Lake that really puts Hangzhou on the map.
D.The police have successfully mapped where the missing boy is.
(3)What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The reason for the study.
B.The method to do the research.
C.The finding of the research.
D.The difficulty in carrying out the study.
(4)Why does the writer write the passage?
A.To tell the importance of saving seagrass.
B.To express the strong love for tiger sharks.
C.To share a new way of doing undersea research.
D.To introduce a special project on global warming.
Part 1: Read and Explore
Every time you turn on the television or take a ride in a car,you could be adding to a problem called acid rain. In this article, you'll learn how acid rain is formed, and how it affects us,and more importantly, what we all can do to prevent it.
How is acid rain created?
When people use fuels(燃料),such as coal and gasoline(汽油),harmful gases are given off. When these gases mix with rain, acid rain forms. Many power stations burn fuels in order to produce the electricity that we use in our homes and offices every day. Cars and trucks also send these gases into the air when they bum gasoline. When rain mixes with these gases, harmful things called acids are so created.
How does acid rain affect us?
Acid rain destroys everything that it touches. It pollutes our rivers, ponds, lakes and oceans along with all the life in them. It pollutes our soil and crops, harms trees, and can even kill fish and plants. Acid rain also eats away(腐蚀)at buildings.
How can we prevent acid rain?
We need to cut down on the gas that gets onto our air. The factories should clean the waste gas before letting it out. Walk or take a bike whenever possible. If you are travelling a long distance, take a bus or train to save fuel.
As the research shows, acid rain harms our environment. But people everywhere can take small steps now to stop it and help protect our environment for the future.

Task 3: Be a Problem Solver(问题解决)
4. Give advice to this person:
"I often drive my car to work and go out on weekends. I want to help prevent acid rain but don't know what to do."

Seagrass,an underwater plant that grows on the ocean floor,is very important for sea life.(海草是一种生长在海底的水下植物,对海洋生物非常重要。)和结尾Hopefully, more mysteries about seagrass will be solved.(更多关于海草的谜团将有望被解开。)可知,科学家们正在研究海草。故选C。
(2)词义猜测题。A.教室里有中国地图吗?B.艾米制定了新项目的计划。C.真正让杭州出名的是西湖。D.警方已经成功地绘制出失踪男孩的位置。根据第三段中After noticing tiger sharks swimming through seagrass off the Bahamas,an American scientist worked with a seagrass expert, trying to map the locations of the plants.(在注意到虎鲨在巴哈马群岛附近的海草中游动后,一位美国科学家与一位海草专家合作,试图绘制这些植物的位置图。)可知,map在这句话中作动词,意为"绘制……的地图,在地图上标出,定位",与D项句子中的map意思相近。故选D。

3. Complete the information:
Harmful gases mix with ______ (rain / snow) to form acid rain.
Power stations burn fuels to produce ______ (electricity / heat) for homes and offices.
To cut down on harmful gases, factories should ______ (clean the waste gas / stop production) before letting it out.

4. Give advice to this person:
"I often drive my car to work and go out on weekends. I want to help prevent acid rain but don't know what to do."
Use ideas from the passage, like choosing transportation wisely, etc.
【答案】
Task 1: Understand the Story(基础理解)
1. 答案:A
解析:原文第二段明确提到“When people use fuels, such as coal and gasoline, harmful gases are given off”,即煤炭和汽油这两种燃料会释放有害气体,对应选项A。
2. 答案:a、b、c、d
解析:原文第三段详细列举了酸雨对环境的影响,包括“pollutes our rivers, ponds, lakes and oceans”(对应a)、“pollutes our soil and crops”(对应b)、“harms trees, and can even kill fish and plants”(对应c)、“eats away at buildings”(对应d),因此四个选项均正确。
Task 2: Talk About Details(细节梳理)
1. 答案:rain
解析:原文第二段指出“When these gases mix with rain, acid rain forms”,说明有害气体与雨水混合形成酸雨。
2. 答案:electricity
解析:原文第二段提到“Many power stations burn fuels in order to produce the electricity that we use in our homes and offices every day”,即发电站燃烧燃料是为了生产供家庭和办公室使用的电力。
3. 答案:clean the waste gas
解析:原文第四段明确建议“The factories should clean the waste gas before letting it out”,即工厂应在排放前净化废气以减少有害气体。
Task 3: Be a Problem Solver(问题解决)
参考示例:
First, you can walk or ride a bike to work if your workplace is not far, instead of driving a car. This can reduce the harmful gases released by car gasoline burning. Second, when you need to travel a long distance on weekends, you can take a bus or train instead of driving. These public transportation methods use fuel more efficiently and produce fewer harmful gases, which helps prevent acid rain.
