【51】Intermittent fasting (IF), focusing on when to eat rather than what, is a rising health trend. It aids weight management by reducing calorie intake and boosting metabolic flexibility. IF also lowers chronic disease risks through improved insulin sensitivity and reduced inflammation. Though more sustainable than restrictive diets, it requires caution for certain groups, necessitating professional advice before adoption.

Our country is catching the world’s attention with its vigor and power. What is it that drives China to achieve so much in recent years? The Chinese Spirit is the answer.
Pony Ma inspires me most with his successful stories and principles of business. Once an ordinary computer college graduate, he founded Tencent, one of the biggest success stories ever created in the Internet Industry. He dreamed big dreams and held on to his dreams along the way. Together with his sharp insight, his company launched QQ and Wechat, which are globally accepted as most popular messaging and social media apps. Pony Ma best embodies the Chinese spirit of dream and resilience.
From him, I find the power of being unreasonable. As a young man, I should not limit my ambition to the paper scores. Instead, I should figure out what my dream is and strive hard for it. To fulfill my dream, I will be motivated to enrich my knowledge and expand my horizons against all odds.

I. Listening Comprehension
Section A
Directions: In Section A, you will hear ten short conversations between two speakers. At the end of each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversations and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a conversation and the question about it, read the four possible answers on your paper, and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.
1. W: Excuse me, I’m looking for Option B.
M: Oh, it’s right there, on the bestseller shelf facing the main entrance.
Q: Where does this conversation take place?
2. M: Do we have enough eggs for breakfast tomorrow?
W: I picked up a dozen the other day. Last time I checked, the box was half full.
Q: How many eggs do they have?
3. W: Mrs. Clark just called. She suggested we talk with Sam about this fight he’d gotten into at school.
M: OK. I’ll come home early tonight.
Q: What’s the probable relationship between the two speakers?
4. M: Great news! The deadline has been postponed for a week.
W: Well, I’d still like to lift this burden from my shoulders sooner rather than later.
Q: How does the woman feel about the news?
5. W: How do you feel now that you’re back from your trip?
M: My legs are the sorest they’ve ever been, but it feels like I have renewed perspective.
Q: What does the man mean?
6. M: Oh no, I forgot to press the button. I should’ve gotten off at the 7th floor.
W: Don’t worry. One more floor and you will be going down.
Q: What is the man probably going to do next?
7. W: Why does everyone seem to be joining the electric vehicle race?
M: Honestly, I’m not surprised. It’s just too big a cake to pass up.
Q: What are the two speakers talking about?
8. M: Good morning, I’m with Road Buddy Garage. Were you satisfied with our service yesterday, Ma’am?
W: I’m afraid there’s much room for improvement. Five hours for some regular maintenance was not reasonable.
Q: What do we learn from the conversation?
9. W: It’s not a very good feeling when your tolerance has been taken for granted again and again.
M: I’m sorry that I’ve made you feel that way. The last thing I want to do is to upset you.
Q: What do we learn from the conversation?
10. M: I’m so tired of always feeling so rushed.
W: Maybe the problem is that you’ve mistaken what’s urgent for what’s important.
Q: What does the woman imply?
Section B
Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages and one longer conversation, and you will be asked several questions on each of the conversation and the passages. The conversation and the passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
Many schools across the U.S. hold graduation ceremonies this time of year. In some schools, even five- and six-year-olds observe their graduation from kindergarten. Meanwhile, some much older people are graduating too. Meet 70-year-old Jerry Reid, who just graduated from the University of Virginia. He earned a bachelor’s degree.
Mr. Reid might not look like the average college student; his hair is definitely grayer. But still, his age is easy to forget. Other college peers know him as one of their own. He joined a men’s group on campus. He sang songs along with many other students. Mr. Reid’s school friends say they can talk to him just about anything.
About a half century ago, in his twenties, Mr. Reid was not in school. Instead, he was racing cars and chasing girls. But he says his friend Bill invited him to parties held in universities. “Bill told me what a terrible life I had unless I came up here and went to school with him,” said Reid. That was in 1963. Mr. Reid says it took him 48 years to take that advice. In 2011, he entered college. His professor, Luke Wright, says Mr. Reid influences students. He opened the minds of the young adults and showed them that life does not end at 40. Instead, the 70-year-old college graduate believes that getting older can be the beginning of a dream.
“Remember that the path you left waits for you. It’s there. It’s yours. All you must do is to get out of your own way and get back to it. And that’s exactly what I did,” said Mr. Reid. He says that he and his wife Susan would take some time off now to enjoy his college degree. Then, he’ll continue his studies for his graduate degree.
(Now listen again.)
Questions:
11. Which of the following is true of Mr. Reid?
12. Which of the following words best describes Mr. Reid?
13. What lesson can we learn from the story of Jerry Reid?
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
Every day, the alarm clock announces the start of another busy weekday in the morning. We jump out of bed, rush into the shower, into our clothes and out the door with hardly a moment to think.
The way most of us spend our mornings is exactly opposite to the conditions that promote flexible, open-minded thinking. Imaginative ideas are most likely to come to us when we’re unfocused. The stress slows down the speed with which signals travel between neurons, making inspiration less likely to occur. And while we all should read a lot about what’s going on in the world, it would not make us feel good for sure, so put that news website or newspaper aside until after the day’s work is done.
So what would our mornings look like if we wanted to fully prepare ourselves for creative problem-solving? We’d set the alarm a few minutes early and lie awake in bed, following our thoughts where they lead. We’d stand a little longer under the warm water of the shower, stopping thinking about tasks in favor of a few more minutes of relaxation. We’d take some deep breaths on our way to work, instead of complaining about heavy traffic. And once in the office — after we get a cup of coffee—we’d click on links not to the news of the day but to the funniest videos the internet has to offer.
(Now listen again.)
Questions:
14. When are we most creative according to the passage?
15. Which of the following is true about newspapers?
16. What does the speaker suggest we should do before working in the morning?
Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following longer conversation.
M: We’ll talk about something that foreigners always say when they visit Britain. It’s “Why are the British so cold?” And they’re talking about the British personality—the famous British “reserve.” It means that we aren’t very friendly, we aren’t very open.
W: So do you think it’s true?
M: It’s a difficult one. So many people who visit Britain say it’s difficult to make friends with British people. They say we’re cold, reserved, unfriendly ...
W: I think it’s true. Look at Americans or Australians. They speak the same language, but they’re much more open. And you see it when you travel. People—I mean strangers—speak to you on the street or on the train. British people seldom speak on the train or the bus. Not in London, anyway.
M: “Not in London.” That’s it. Capital cities are full of tourists and are never very friendly. People are different in other parts of the country.
W: Not completely. I met a woman once, an Italian. She’s been working in Manchester for two years, and no one—not one of her colleagues—had ever invited her to their home. They were friendly to her at work, but nothing else. She couldn’t believe it. She said that would never happen in Italy.
M: You know what they say—“an Englishman’s home is his castle.” It’s really difficult to get inside.
W: Yeah. It’s about being private. You go home to your house and your garden and you close the door. It’s your place.
M: That’s why the British don’t like flats. They prefer to live in houses.
W: That’s true.
(Now listen again.)
Questions:
17. What do foreigners generally think of British people according to the man?
18. What may British people typically do on the train, according to the woman?
19. What does the woman say about the Italian woman working in Manchester?
20. Why do British people prefer houses to flats?

Science journals ban listing of ChatGPT as co-author on papers
The publishers of thousands of scientific journals have banned or restricted contributors’ use of an advanced AI-driven chatbot amid the concerns 1 it could pepper academic literature with flawed and even fabricated research.
ChatGPT, a fluent but flaky chatbot developed by OpenAI in California, has impressed or distressed more than a million human users by rattling out poems, short stories, essays and even personal advice since its launch in November.
2 the chatbot has proved a huge source of fun -- its take on how to free a peanut butter sandwich from a VCR, in the style of the King James Bible, is one notable hit -- the program can also produce fake scientific abstracts that are convincing enough to fool human reviewers.
ChatGPT’s more legitimate (legal) uses in article preparation have already led to it 3 (credit) as a co-author on a handful of papers.
The sudden arrival of ChatGPT has promoted a scramble published to respond. On Thursday, Holden Thorp, the editor-in-chief of the leading US journal Science, announced an updated editorial policy, banning the use of text from ChatGPT and clarifying that the program could not be listed as an author.
“Given the craze that has built up around this, it’s a good idea to make 4 absolutely clear that we will not permit ChatGPT to be an author or to have its text 5 (use) in papers,” Thorp said.
Leading scientific journals require authors to sign a form 6 (declare) that they are accountable 7 their contribution to the work. Since ChatGPT cannot do this, it cannot be an author, Thorp says.
But even using ChatGPT in the preparation of a paper is problematic, he believes. ChatGPT makes plenty of errors, which could find their way into the literature, he says, and if scientists come 8 (rely) on AI programs to prepare literature reviews or summarize their findings, the proper context of the work and the deep scrutiny(inspection) that results deserve could be lost. “That is the opposite direction of where we need to go,” he said.
Other publishers have made similar changes. On Tuesday, Springer-Nature, which publishes nearly 3,000 journals, updated its guidelines to state that ChatGPT cannot be listed as an author. But the publisher has not banned ChatGPT outright. The tool, and others like it, can still be used in the preparation of papers, provided that full details 9 (reveal) in the manuscript.
Elsevier, which publishes about 2,800 journals, including Cell and the Lancet, has taken a similar stance to Springer-Nature, 10 guidelines allow the use of AI tools to improve the readability and language of the research article, but not to replace key tasks that should be done by the authors, such as interpreting data or drawing scientific conclusions.

Stepney Words
Chris Searle’s journey as a teacher at Sir John Cass Secondary School in Stepney, East London, began in 1970. He was driven by a strong 11 to the area and a progressive vision for education. Having completed a postgraduate thesis (论文) on Isaac Rosenberg, a poet from the East End, Searle saw Stepney as a place filled with potential, in spite of its 12 as a hopeless community. He believed that education, particularly through poetry, could transform the lives of his students, many of whom came from low-income, high-risk backgrounds.
Searle’s 13 approach conflicted with the traditional views of the school’s governors and teachers. At a time when discipline was harsh and students were often regarded as troublemakers, Searle viewed these 14 teenagers as individuals with untapped potential. He believed that poetry could unlock their creativity and help them express their experiences, offering them a sense of hope and purpose.
His belief in poetry’s power materialized in the creation of Stepney Words, a collection of his students’ poems. Despite the 15 from some staff who thought his methods too liberal, the poems gained attention, and some of them were even published in The Sun newspaper by March 1971. The 16 gave the students a voice, but it also drew criticism from school officials who thought the poems were “too gloomy.”
Searle’s progressive ideals led to his 17 from the school. However, his students, 18 by the decision, organized a protest led by 16-year-old Zenaida de la Cruz. The entire school quickly 19 , standing together with Searle. On his return to the school, he found 800 students standing outside the gates in the rain, showing their support.
Though the government eventually allowed him to return, he decided to leave the school in 1974. His commitment to education did not end there — he continued to teach around the world and published his own poetry, leaving behind a(n) 20 impact of optimism, innovation, and faith in the power of education to bring about change.

A few years ago, I found myself really burnt out. I was struggling to motivate myself and looking at my calendar started filling me with a sort of low-grade fear.
But the 21 part for me was that on the surface there wasn’t any obvious reason why I would be so tired. It didn’t seem 22 . Sure, I was busy, but no more busy than anyone else. So what was wrong with me?
But when I couldn’t shake it off after a few weeks and when I 23 more serious health issues, it became clear that what I was experiencing was, in fact, burnout. And at a certain point it hit me: my burnout wasn’t stemming from my distant past; it had actually been more than a decade in the 24 . I realized that I’d been 25 to truly relaxing for at least 15 years. Even when I had “time off”, I never actually relaxed. I never let myself off the hook. Taking downtime made me feel 26 , which was hard to detect — but 27 . And over time it wore me down, physically and mentally.
Job burnout is very real, but it is not the only cause of burnout. We tend to think that taking a rest or a break from work will always 28 our burnout. But because we can also get burnt out from other, less obvious causes, the cures are often less obvious as well. We can get burnt out from years of stress, 29 emotions and simply living the wrong life for us. If your cause of burnout stems from one of those less obvious places, you are going to have to do a little more digging to figure out the cause of your 30 .
Assuming you can’t quit your life and go chill on a beach for a few years, what does 31 from burnout look like? The first cure is rest. And I mean true rest, not rest where you feel stressed and guilty for resting.
It also helps to think through where your particular burnout originates from. After identifying the 32 of your burnout, then you can get honest with yourself about what you can do to help yourself. If it’s overworking, the obvious cure is a shift in the way you operate and very 33 rest and downtime. It will depend on what’s feasible for you, but if you find yourself in a job or career that you cannot, practically speaking, 34 , the question is how can you create more rest outside work? I recommend, in addition to 35 , working with a great therapist to help unpack your emotions and trauma, gain coping mechanisms to heal, and avoid burnout in the future.

Creative writing is part of being a kid. Writing and reading wild stories of lost kingdoms and Mars colonies help the imagination grow strong. But a recent study uncovers an interesting, perhaps even discouraging, trend: This generation of kids seems to prefer narrative realism when they write.
In a study published in Creativity Research Journal, researchers at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the University of Washington asked the question, “How have the style, content, and form of adolescents’ art-making and creative writing evolved over the last 20 years? ”
To answer that question, researcher Emily Weinstein examined traditional hallmarks of creativity, such as originality, complexity, and sophistication, in two distinct eras of teenage self-expression. After analyzing 354 visual artworks and 50 fiction stories from two separate time periods (1990-1995 and 2006-2011), there’s good and bad news.
The good news? Adolescent visual proficiency has improved. The bad news: Teen creativity and technical skill in writing have declined. Instead of imagining Martian neighborhoods, the app generation has been describing their own summer plans.
Why is this happening? From the study: “The observed domain changes could undeniably be the result of any number of societal changes over the period of interest. Two changes highlighted by Kim (2011), however, may be particularly relevant to high school students’ experiences and their creative expression: the increase in digital media technologies and the rise of standardized testing in schools.”
This is a small study, but if it inspires you to think about how to develop the imaginations of the kids and teens you know, may we suggest this option: Read and share fiction that sparks wonder and possibility. That means genre fiction: science fiction and fantasy that pulls you out of narrative realism and into a world of possibility. If you already love science fiction and fantasy, I encourage you to plant seeds of inspiration by sharing your favorite science fiction and fantasy authors with a teenager or young person you like.
39.What is the focus of Emily Weinstein’s research?
A.The impact of modern technology on adolescents’ creativity.
B.The relationship between visual proficiency and creative writing.
C.The change in adolescents’ creative writing and art-making.
D.The reason why reading plays an important role in developing creativity.
40.What did the researchers conclude about this generation of kids?
A.Teens no longer write realistically, but have improved their ability to write creatively.
B.Digital media technologies have improved adolescents’ visual skills as well as their ability to write creatively.
C.Adolescents prefer realism to fantasy because the latter is not relevant to their life.
D.Teens’ writing skills are not as good as they used to be, and their writing tends to be less creative than it was before.
41.Which of the following factors contributes to the change in adolescents’ creative writing ability?
A.The fear of being considered weird. B.The lack of high-quality science fictions.
C.The overwhelming pressure from study. D.The wide use of standardized testing in schools.
42.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Having teens read science fiction and fantasy novels is a good way to develop their imaginations.
B.Teens will have trouble going beyond narrative realism in their writing.
C.Sharing your favourite writers with a teen or young person is a good way to get them to reduce their use of technology.
D.Reading wild stories does not necessarily help the imagination grow strong

In the genetic age, ecologists’ jobs are made much easier by two things. One is that every organism carries its own chemical identity card, in the form of its genome (基因组). The second is that they drop these ID cards everywhere they go. Urine, bits of fur stuck to a hedge, even shed skin cells: all deposit DNA into the environment. Cheap gene sequencing allows scientists to harvest this “environmental DNA” (eDNA) from soil, sand, water and the like, and use it to keep track of which species are living where.
“Every organism,” of course, includes humans. In a paper published on May 15th in Nature Ecology & Evolution, a group of researchers from America and Europe report that such eDNA surveys pick up large quantities of human DNA as well as the animal sort. That DNA can be read—and potentially matched with individuals—by anyone with the right equipment.
The researchers did not set out to study “inadvertent human genetic bycatch”, as they call the phenomenon. The work began at the Witney Sea Turtle Hospital in Florida, during an investigation into a viral turtle disease. The researchers sampled water from the turtle’s tanks, as well as from ocean water and beaches upon which the creatures nested, looking for viral DNA.
They expected to sweep up DNA from other species during their trawl (拖网). What was surprising, according to Jessica Farrell, a biologist at the Witney Hospital and one of the paper’s authors, was just how much human DNA they found. Even though many of their sampling sites were not near towns and cities, they found human genetic material in every sample they examined.
Interested, they expanded their search. In both Florida and in Ireland they found human DNA in rivers, with concentrations especially high as they flowed through towns. They found it in beach sand, and even in air from rooms in which humans had been working. Human DNA is not quite everywhere: it was not detectable in deep ocean water, or on remote beaches closed to the public. But anywhere that humans are, their DNA appears to be as well.
In one sense, that is unsurprising. But advances in gene-sequencing meant there was enough information in the samples to deduce plenty of things about the humans in question. The researchers could pick out males thanks to DNA from the Y chromo some. They could infer an individual’s ancestry, and even spot mutations (突变) that affect a person’s disease risk. David Duffy, another of the paper’s authors, said the amount and quality of the DNA they recovered “far exceeded” the minimum necessary to be included in America’s database of missing people. Dr Duffy and his colleagues did not try to identify individuals in their study, for moral reasons. But they had no doubt it could be done.
43.Which of the following about eDNA is true according to the passage?
A.It provides a way to track the migration of animals.

The Fight for a Clean Energy Future
Net zero climate policies are increasingly under threat. Elected far-right populists and authoritarian oil-rich states are pushing back against global climate efforts. Meanwhile, Europe is facing yet another summer of record-breaking heatwaves. 47
Yet UN secretary general António Guterres offered a note of hope in a recent speech. “The sun is rising on a clean energy age,” he said, highlighting the falling costs of solar and wind energy. He warned of future gas-price shocks and urged major tech companies — whose energy-hungry data centres are driving up electricity demand — to commit to using 100% low-carbon power by 2030.
Given US president Donald Trump’s open hostility toward renewable energy, Mr. Guterres may be right to focus on businesses rather than politicians. In Scotland this week, Mr. Trump once again launched a misleading attack on wind turbines. 48 This makes him a uniquely damaging figure — but he’s not alone. In several countries, populist parties are stepping up their opposition to climate goals.
49 Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has questioned net zero and even suggested leaving the Paris Agreement. Her acting shadow energy secretary accused the UN’s top climate scientists of bias.
Labour’s Ed Miliband responded firmly, calling such attitudes anti-science and irresponsible. With the UN climate deadline approaching, political courage is essential. The goal of tripling global renewable capacity by 2030 is still far out of reach.
50 Grid systems need upgrading. Supply chains must be improved. Labour’s proposal for fairer billing through a social energy tariff (关税) could protect vulnerable households. Real progress will take honesty, ambition — and determination.
A.In the UK, views that once belonged to the political extremes have moved into the mainstream.
B.He says he backs green energy and believes wind and solar should play a role in the energy mix.
C.The world’s failure to reduce carbon emissions remains deeply concerning.
D.Domestically, Britain must ensure a fair and well-planned green transition.
E.Public awareness of energy issues is growing, but many remain unsure about what net zero really means.
F.He also supports the cancellation of major green investments.

Intermittent Fasting: A New Approach to Health and Longevity
In recent years, intermittent fasting (IF) has gained popularity worldwide as a lifestyle choice to improve health. Unlike traditional dieting, IF does not focus on what people eat but rather when they eat. The most common patterns include the 16/8 method, which limits food intake to an eight-hour window each day, and the 5:2 method, in which people eat normally for five days but restrict calories on two non-consecutive days.
Advocates of IF believe it benefits the body in multiple ways. Firstly, it may support weight management. By limiting eating hours, people often consume fewer calories, which helps reduce body fat. For example, someone who usually snacks late at night might naturally avoid extra calories by following IF. Moreover, fasting periods allow the body to use stored energy more effectively, promoting metabolic flexibility.
Secondly, IF may reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Studies suggest that fasting can lower blood sugar, improve insulin sensitivity, and decrease inflammation—factors closely linked to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Some studies have even noted improvements in blood pressure and cholesterol, though more long-term evidence is still needed. Additionally, fasting may enhance cellular repair processes, such as autophagy, which removes damaged cells and promotes longevity.
Thirdly, IF is often easier to follow compared with strict diets that ban certain foods. Since no food groups are forbidden, individuals can enjoy a balanced diet during eating windows, making the approach more sustainable in the long term. For instance, a person can still enjoy family meals or social gatherings without feeling restricted, as long as these fall within the eating period.
Nevertheless, IF is not suitable for everyone. Pregnant women, children, or individuals with certain medical conditions may experience negative effects. Some people may also struggle with hunger, fatigue, or overeating during eating periods. Therefore, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional before starting an intermittent fasting plan.

1.that 2.Although/Though/While 3.being credited 4.it 5.used 6.declaring 7.for 8.to rely 9.are revealed 10.whose
故填that。
故填Although/Though/While。
故填being credited。
代词it担当形式宾语,代指真正的宾语“that we will not permit ChatGPT to be an author or to have its text _______in papers”。故填it。
故填used。
固定搭配:be accountable for,意为“对……负责”。故填for。
故填to rely。
故填are revealed。

根据后文“on the surface there wasn’t any obvious reason why I would be so tired”可知,这种无明确诱因的疲惫对作者而言是令人困惑的。故选B。
结合上文“on the surface there wasn’t any obvious reason why I would be so tired”和后文“So what was wrong with me?”
A. inquired after询问近况;B. gave in屈服;C. carried away情绪激动;D. ruled out排除。后文“more serious health issues, it became clear that what I was experiencing was, in fact, burnout”提到“很明显自己经历的是倦怠”,说明作者先“排除了更严重的健康问题”,才能确定是倦怠。故选D。
A. processing加工;B. discussing讨论;C. making制作;D. feeling感觉。前文“my burnout wasn’t stemming from my distant past(倦怠并非源于遥远过去)”,转折后强调“it had actually been more than a decade(其实十多年来一直在逐渐形成)”可知,“in the making(在形成过程中)”符合“长期积累导致倦怠”的逻辑。故选C。
A. resistant抵制的;B. loyal忠诚的;C. accustomed习惯的;D. obliged感激的。后文“Even when I had “time off”, I never actually relaxed.(即使有休息时间,也从未真正放松)”说明作者抗拒真正放松,“resistant to relaxing(抗拒放松)”符合语境。故选A。
根据上文“Even when I had “time off”, I never actually relaxed. (即使有休息时间,也从未真正放松)”可知,作者从未放过自己,可知休息会让作者感到愧疚,“feel guilty(感到愧疚)”符合“无法坦然休息”的心理。故选B。
27.考查形容词词义辨析。句意同上。A. sensible理智的;B. personal个人的;C. changeable可改变的;D. ceaseless不断的。后文“And over time it wore me down, physically and mentally.(长期下来身心俱疲)”说明休息时的愧疚感是持续不断的,ceaseless符合“长期积累导致疲惫”的逻辑。故选D。
A. reverse逆转;B. intensify加剧;C. continue继续;D. aid帮助。前文“Job burnout is very real, but it is not the only cause of burnout.”以及后文“But because we can also get burnt out from other, less obvious causes, the cures are often less obvious as well.” 故选A。
根据上文“We can get burnt out from years of stress”以及“simply living the wrong life for us”可知,这里在列举让我们身心疲惫的原因,“未解决的情绪”是常见的隐性压力源,与其它两项并列符合逻辑。故选D。
A. argument争论;B. depression沮丧;C. exhaustion筋疲力尽;D. failure失败。全文围绕“倦怠(burnout)”展开,倦怠的核心表现是“疲惫”,“the cause of your exhaustion(疲惫的原因)”与“burnout”呼应。故选C。
根据后文“The first cure is rest. And I mean true rest, not rest where you feel stressed and guilty for resting. It also helps to think through where your particular burnout originates from.(第一种治疗方法就是休息。我指的是真正的休息,而不是那种让你感到压力重重、还因休息而自责的休息方式。此外,思考一下你这种极度疲惫的具体根源也很有帮助)”可知,后文在介绍治愈倦怠的方法,故此处“what does ____ from burnout look like”应指治愈倦怠。故选B。

【答案】39.C 40.D 41.D 42.A

B.It allows researchers to restore individual organisms.
C.It can be easily collected from all types of environments.
D.It contains a wealth of genetic information about various species.
44.In this passage, the word “inadvertent” (paragraph 3) is closest in meaning to “__________”.
A.familiar B.accidental C.insensitive D.regular
45.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The application of eDNA for identity confirmation has aroused concern.
B.As expected, the researchers detected much human eDNA in their search.
C.An individual’s gender and ancestry can be confirmed by means of eDNA.
D.eDNA is instrumental in upgrading America’s database of missing people.
46.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.Unintended Discoveries in Turtle Disease Research
B.The Ecological Significance of Environmental DNA
C.Human DNA’s Prevalence in Environmental Samples
D.Using Genetic Information to Identify Missing Persons
【答案】43.D 44.B 45.A 46.C
根据第一段“One is that every organism carries its own chemical identity card, in the form of its genome.(一是每个生物都有自己的化学身份证,以基因组的形式存在。)”和“Urine, bits of fur stuck to a hedge, even shed skin cells: all deposit DNA into the environment. Cheap gene sequencing allows scientists to harvest this “environmental DNA” (eDNA) from soil, sand, water and the like, and use it to keep track of which species are living where.(尿液,粘在树篱上的皮毛,甚至脱落的皮肤细胞:所有这些都将DNA沉积到环境中。廉价的基因测序使科学家能够从土壤、沙子、水等中获取这种“环境DNA”(eDNA),并用它来跟踪哪些物种生活在哪里。)”可知,“环境DNA”里有DNA,而DNA包含了物种的遗传信息,因此关于eDNA正确的说法是D选项“It contains a wealth of genetic information about various species.(它包含了各种物种的丰富遗传信息。)”,故选D。
根据第三段“The work began at the Witney Sea Turtle Hospital in Florida, during an investigation into a viral turtle disease.(这项工作始于佛罗里达州的Witney Sea Turtle Hospital,当时正在调查一种海龟病毒性疾病。)”和第四段“What was surprising, according to Jessica Farrell, a biologist at the Witney Hospital and one of the paper’s authors, was just how much human DNA they found.(据惠特尼医院的生物学家、该论文的作者之一Jessica Farrell说,令人惊讶的是他们发现了如此多的人类DNA。)”
根据最后一段“David Duffy, another of the paper’s authors, said the amount and quality of the DNA they recovered “far exceeded” the minimum necessary to be included in America’s database of missing people. Dr Duffy and his colleagues did not try to identify individuals in their study, for moral reasons.(该论文的另一位作者David Duffy说,他们找到的DNA的数量和质量“远远超过”纳入美国失踪人口数据库的最低要求。出于道德原因,Dr Duffy和他的同事们并没有试图在他们的研究中识别个体。)”可知,eDNA在身份确认中的应用引起了人们的担忧。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第二段“In a paper published on May 15th in Nature Ecology & Evolution, a group of researchers from America and Europe report that such eDNA surveys pick up large quantities of human DNA as well as the animal sort.(在5月15日发表在《自然生态与进化》杂志上的一篇论文中,来自美国和欧洲的一组研究人员报告说,这种eDNA调查收集了大量的人类和动物DNA。)”

【答案】47.C 48.F 49.A 50.D
47.根据上文“Net zero climate policies are increasingly under threat. Elected far-right populists and authoritarian oil-rich states are pushing back against global climate efforts. Meanwhile, Europe is facing yet another summer of record-breaking heatwaves. (净零气候政策正日益受到威胁。当选的极右翼民粹主义者和威权主义石油富国正在抵制全球气候行动。与此同时,欧洲正迎来又一个创纪录高温的夏天。)”可知,前文均为气候相关的负面情况,此空需承接上文,体现这些情况带来的担忧,C选项“The world’s failure to reduce carbon emissions remains deeply concerning. (全球未能减少碳排放,这一点仍然令人深感担忧。)”既总结了前文后果,也符合负面语境,衔接自然。故选C项。
48.根据上文“Given US president Donald Trump’s open hostility toward renewable energy, Mr. Guterres may be right to focus on businesses rather than politicians. In Scotland this week, Mr. Trump once again launched a misleading attack on wind turbines. (鉴于美国总统唐纳德·特朗普对可再生能源的公开敌意,古特雷斯先生将重点放在企业而非政客身上可能是正确的。本周在苏格兰,特朗普先生再次对风力涡轮机发起了误导性攻击。)”以及下文“This makes him a uniquely damaging figure — but he’s not alone. (这使他成为一个极具破坏性的人物——但他并非个例。)”可知,此空需补充特朗普反对清洁能源的行为以体现其“破坏性”,F选项“He also supports the cancellation of major green investments. (他还支持取消重大绿色投资。)”中“also”承接上文“发起误导性攻击”,进一步说明其负面举动,符合语境。故选F项。
49.根据下文“Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has questioned net zero and even suggested leaving the Paris Agreement. Her acting shadow energy secretary accused the UN’s top climate scientists of bias. (保守党领袖凯米·巴登诺克对净零目标提出了质疑,甚至建议退出《巴黎协定》。她的代理影子能源大臣指责联合国顶尖气候科学家存在偏见。)”可知,下文是英国政界人物的负面态度,此空需总起引出英国情况,A选项“In the UK, views that once belonged to the political extremes have moved into the mainstream. (在英国,曾经属于政治极端派的观点已进入主流。)”点明“英国”,且为下文极端态度提供背景,符合语境。故选A项。
Supply chains must be improved. Labour’s proposal for fairer billing through a social energy tariff (关税) could protect vulnerable households. (电网系统需要升级。供应链必须改进。工党提出的通过社会能源关税实现更公平计费的提案,可能会保护弱势家庭。)”可知,下文是英国国内清洁能源发展的举措,此空需总起点明英国国内行动方向,D选项“Domestically, Britain must ensure a fair and well-planned green transition. (在国内,英国必须确保实现公平且规划完善的绿色转型。)”中“Domestically(国内层面)”以及“Britain(英国)”与下文呼应,且概括了举措目标,符合语境。故选D项。

Intermittent fasting (IF), focusing on when to eat rather than what, is a rising health trend.
①IF, a popular health trend, emphasizes eating timing over food choices.
②It helps in weight control by cutting calories and enhancing metabolic efficiency.
③IF reduces risks of chronic diseases via better insulin response and less inflammation.
④While more adaptable than strict diets, IF isn’t for everyone; medical consultation is advised.
Intermittent fasting (IF), focusing on eating timing instead of food types, is a growing health trend. It assists in weight control by cutting calorie intake and increasing metabolic flexibility.
Also, IF decreases chronic disease risks through better insulin sensitivity and less inflammation. Though more sustainable than restrictive diets, it should be approached with caution for some groups, so consulting experts before starting is necessary.

· “分量那么重” 需用so much weight,用 “so...that...”
· 状语:“万万没想到” 译为Unexpectedly(副词作状语,简洁贴合语境,也可用 To everyone's surprise)。
· 主句:“他的一句话分量居然那么重” 译为 “one of his sentences carried so much weight”,主语用 “one of his sentences”(而非 “his one sentence”,符合英文表达习惯)。
Unexpectedly / To everyone's surprise
carry weight
the entire plan

(as…as)
This classic work has been passed down to the present day only after numerous/countless scholars revised it. Now, though it is not as widely read as it once was, it still serves as an important carrier of traditional culture.
为第二个分句,“如今”用now,放在句首首字母大写;“虽然”用although表达,引导让步状语从句,“不如以前那样广泛”表达为it is not as widely read as it once was,第二个as引导比较状语从句;主句主语是it(指代上文提到的经典作品),“仍”用副词still作状语;谓语“承载”用serve as表达,宾语“传统文化的重要载体”用an important carrier of traditional culture表达。 This classic work has been passed down to the present day only after numerous/countless scholars revised it. Now, though it is not as widely read as it once was, it still serves as an important carrier of traditional culture.

It gradually dawned on the young architect that there was no shortcut to success, and the key to making some achievements/establishing himself/getting/becoming established in this industry was diligence/hard work and down-to-earth effort.
=It gradually dawned on the young architect that there was no shortcut to success, and if he wanted to make some achievements/establish himself/get/become established in this industry, the key was diligence/hard work and down-to-earth effort/is to be diligent/hard-working and down-to-earth.

It dawned on sb. that...(某人渐渐明白……),It 为形式主语,that 从句是真正主语。
It gradually dawned on the young architect that...(这位年轻的建筑师渐渐明白……)
. 分句 1:成功没有捷径译:there was no shortcut to success(there be 句型,时态与 dawned 一致)。
· 句式 1(主系表结构):the key to making achievements/establishing himself in this industry was diligence/hard work and down-to-earth effort(to 为介词,后接动名词)。
· 句式 2(含条件从句):if he wanted to make achievements/establish himself in this industry, the key was diligence/hard work(或表语用形容词:to be diligent and down-to-earth)。
no shortcut to success

He dreamed big dreams and held on to his dreams along the way. Together with his sharp insight, his company launched QQ and Wechat, which are globally accepted as most popular messaging and social media apps. Pony Ma best embodies the Chinese spirit of dream and resilience.
From him, I find the power of being unreasonable. As a young man, I should not limit my ambition to the paper scores. Instead, I should figure out what my dream is and strive hard for it. To fulfill my dream, I will be motivated to enrich my knowledge and expand my horizons against all odds.
