Students can choose clubs that focus on an area of interest. Mathcounts Club Mathcounts tries to increase excitement towards mathematic achievement. It hopes to provide students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. Schools select individuals and teams to participate in competitions. Local competitions are held in February with winners progressing to state competitions and then on to the national level. Envirothon The Envirothon program focuses on natural resources knowledge. The ecology field competition for five-member middle school teams offers competitions in wildlife, soils, forestry, current environmental issues and aquatics. Students work and learn in middle school clubs and can compete at the local and state level. Future Problem Solvers Future Problem Solvers is an academic club that uses a six-step process to solve problems that may happen in the future. Students who are in the talented and gifted program, who like to “think out of the box,” or who enjoy thinking about futuristic problems may like this club. Teams that score high enough can go to the state competition and then to the international competition. Builders Club Builders Club is open to any middle school student who wishes to perform community service. The members learn by doing, and they learn organization, teamwork, and leadership. Builders Clubs can provide a recycling collection point, organize canned food and clothing collection activities to support local shelters, adopt a resident at a local senior citizens home, etc. 1. Why do some of students choose Mathcounts Club? A. To be successful in science careers. B. To enjoy solving future problems. C. To perform community service. D. To study wildlife and soils. 2. Which club can students who are not interested in competitions choose? A. Mathecounts Club. B. Envirothon. C. Future Problem Solvers. D. Builders Club. 3. The passage mainly talks about _______. A. the state academic competitions B. middle school clubs C. extra-curricular homework D. the gifted students B My daughter recently expressed interest in riding more. We live in a small city, and bicycles are a popular transportation choice here. I was excited at her choice. She would soon learn how easy it is to get around in this way, and how fast she can ride on two wheels. Bike tours are often quicker than bus or cab or car trips are. Much to my surprise, none of this mattered to her. On one of our first trips together, I was fixing on the route ahead- turns, arrival time- when she said, “Hey Dad, wanna know a riddle?” And then, before I explained how unsuitable this was, how we shouldn’t be telling jokes while riding, and how we should be focused on the road, on reaching our destination as soon as we could, she started, “What lasts forever but never dies?” This is how it’s been. She has shared stories from the past, hopes for the future. I have been challenged to ride backward and to stretch legs out on both sides. None of these have been dangerous, mind you. My daughter does not ride without proper care. She pulls even with me, for instance only on wide, empty streets. When the car appears, she quietly slips behind me and holds both eyes to the road. As soon as conditions of basic safety are met, though... “Dad, slow down! Isn’t this a lovely neighborhood?” my daughter asks. It is a lovely neighborhood. I’m surprised, I’ve come this way countless times, but never have I noticed any of this. Farther down the road, the laughter of children comes out from a game of ball. I make a promise. From now on, I’m going to move more slowly on these rides. I’m going to notice the neighborhoods we move through. I’m going to enjoy this. 4. The writer had thought that riding would help her daughter ________. A. go somewhere conveniently B. have more bike excursions alone C. do some tricks on the bike D. learn the importance of time in traveling 5. According to the text, the writer’s daughter ________. A. ignored the traffic while riding B. had a good sense of safety C. kept talking without looking ahead D. enjoyed challenging any danger on the road 6. While looking at the neighborhood, the writer realized ________. A. how easily his daughter was distracted B. what a good neighborhood looked like C. what he missed in the course of riding D. why a neighborhood needed a garden 7. What promise did the writer make? A. To be conscious of time in riding. B. To take his daughter to ride more often. C. To focus his attention on the destination. D. To ride slowly to enjoy the beauty along the road. C My First Day of School Frightened, I was walking into my first school in America. I had traveled a long distance from India in order to join my parents, who had been here for three years, hoping America would help my future. My father decided that I would have a better education here, so I enrolled (登记) in the local high school in my new town. I was afraid of how I would do. On the first day, I went to my second class after I had missed my first. With anxiety, I reached for the door, opening it slowly. Without paying attention to my classmates, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a soft voice he answered, “Yes.” His voice comforted me a little. He gave me a sheet called Course Requirements, which I would never get in India because we didn’t have anything like that. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I didn’t actually want to pick a seat. In India we had fixed seats, so I never needed to worry about that. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image produced by the overhead projector (投影仪). In Indian schools, we didn’t use the technology. We had to take notes as the teacher spoke. It was noon. I was very confused about when I would have lunch. I went to my next class and the bell rang as I entered. I went through the regular (惯常的) process of asking the teacher if I was in the right class. She said, “It’s still fourth period.” “But the bell just rang,” I said. Changing from a gentle tone to a harsh (刺耳的) one, she said, “That is the lunch bell, young man.” I apologized. Without another word I headed for the cafeteria. I felt lucky because we didn’t have this in India. Every confusion seemed like a barrier I had to get through to reach my goal. At the end of the day, I was on my way to the bus which we didn’t have in India either. I saw my bus and sat down inside happily. I was thinking, today wasn’t so bad. 8.
