In the US children must go to school from the age of 6 to the ages between 14 and 16, depending on the state they live in. Subjects In England and Wales the subjects taught in schools are laid down by the National Curriculum, which was introduced in 1988 and sets out in detail the subjects that children should study and the levels of achievement they should reach by the ages of 7,11,14, and 16, when they are tested. The National Curriculum does not apply to Scotland, where each school decides what subjects it will teach. Examinations At 16, students in England and Wales take GCSE examinations. These examinations are taken by students of all levels of ability in any of a range of subjects, and may involve a final examination, an assessment of work done during the two-year course, or both of these things. At 18 some students take A-level examinations, usually in no more than three subjects. It is necessary to have A levels in order to go to university. In Scotland students take the SCE examinations. A year later, they can take examinations called Highers, after which they can either go straight to a university or spend a further year at school and take the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies. In Scotland the university system is different from that in England and Wales. Courses usually last four years rather than three, and students study a large number of subjects as part of their degree. 1. In which parts of the world are the subjects taught only decided by the nation? A. England and Wales. B. England and Scotland. C. US and Britain. D. Wales and Scotland. 2. Which of the following has nothing to do with students in Scotland? A. GCSE. B. SCE. C. Highers. D. The Certificate of Sixth Year Studies. 3. Which of the following is TRUE? A. In the US, only local government can decide the subjects. B. In Scotland, students can take either the SCE examinations or the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies. C. In England and Wales, one cannot go to university without A levels. D. As for a 16-year-old student in England and Wales, he has to take both GCSE examinations and a final examination. 【答案】1. A 2. A 3. C 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍英国的课程设置和考试制度。 【1题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段的第一句“In England and Wales the subjects taught in schools are laid down by the National Curriculum, which was introduced in 1988 and sets out in detail the subjects that children should study and the levels of achievement they should reach by the ages of 7,11,14, and 16, when they are tested.(在英格兰和威尔士,学校教授的科目是由1988年引入的国家课程规定的,该课程详细规定了儿童应该学习的科目以及他们在7岁、11岁、14岁和16岁考试时应该达到的成绩水平。)”可知,在英格兰和威尔士,课程只由国家决定的。故选A项。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段的句子“In Scotland students take the SCE examinations. A year later, they can take examinations called Highers, after which they can either go straight to a university or spend a further year at school and take the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies.(在苏格兰,学生参加SCE考试。一年后,他们可以参加Highers考试,之后他们可以直接上大学,也可以在学校再学习一年,并获the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies)”可知,GCSE苏格兰的学生无关。故选A项。 【3题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段第一句“At 16, students in England and Wales take GCSE examinations.(16岁时,英格兰和威尔士的学生参加普通中等教育证书考试。)”和最后一句“At 18 some students take A-level examinations, usually in no more than three subjects. Even though my current high school was not my first choice, I never regretted attending Southside High School. “Since you have chosen it, then it is the best for you,” said my parents. Up until the junior year I did not realize my capabilities (能力) as a student. Being in the IB Program, I was told that my junior year would be the toughest in all the years of high school. With this “little” piece of information, I walked into my junior year, scared of my grades. As weeks went by, I started to believe that the junior year was not as hard as everyone had said, but I was wrong. My grades were rapidly declining (下降) and by the end of the first term I had had five Cs in seven of my classes!I could not believe it — I did not want to believe it. I tried my best to get my grades up myself without any help from anyone, but my pride just made my grades worse. And I had to miss out on one of the most important speech and debate competitions all year: States. I was heartbroken. I realized that I could not survive my junior year on my own, so I had to get help fast. Once I got a tutor, my grades went from Cs, Ds, and even some Fs, to nothing but As and Bs. I slowly started to gain my confidence back in all of my classes and even myself. By the time the third and fourth quarter came around, I had been on the honor roll twice, and I had received awards from speeches and debates, tennis and school. Southside has taught me to always keep my head up and never give up on myself no matter what life throws at me. I am proud to be a Southside Tiger. 4. What can we learn from the first paragraph? A. The writer always thought Southside High School was the best. B. The writer’s parents persuaded her into attending Southside High School. C. The writer has met many challenges since she attended high school. D. Life has become easier since the writer came to Southside High School. 5. How did the writer feel when she walked into her junior year? A. Excited. B. Worried. C. Curious. D. Uninterested. 6. Why was the writer’s study worse and worse? A. She didn’t work hard enough. B. She didn’t ask others for help because of her pride. C. She missed many important speeches. D. No one would like to help her. 7. What important lesson has the writer learned at Southside High School? A. Students should face challenges bravely. B. Students should be careful in choosing school. C. Students should be proud of their school. D. Students should better learn about life. 【答案】4. C 5. B 6. B 7. Whenever she tackled long passages in textbooks or test papers, she’d get stuck on complex sentences and unfamiliar words — often spending 15 minutes just to finish a 500-word text. Worse still, she could never grasp the main idea, so she’d make frequent mistakes in reading comprehension questions. This pushed her English test scores to around 65 out of 100, and she felt so frustrated that she even hid her test papers from her parents, worrying they’d be disappointed. “I thought I’d never get better at English reading,” she recalled. Last semester, her English teacher, Mr. Liu, noticed her struggle and suggested a “20-Minute Daily Reading Plan” tailored to her level. He advised her to start with easy materials: short stories from Teen Times magazine and simplified English versions of fairy tales, which have simple sentences and common words. The plan required reading for 20 minutes every evening — no more, no less — and taking quick notes: write down 3 new words (with their meanings) and 1 key sentence that summed up the passage. At first, Zhang Hua forgot to read a few times because of homework, but she set a phone reminder and asked her roommate to check on her. Slowly, it became a habit. After three months, the changes were clear. She now finishes a 500-word passage in 8 minutes, and she can immediately tell the main idea after reading. Her English test score jumped to 82, and she even joined the school’s English reading club. There, she shares articles she loves and discusses them with classmates — something she never dared to do before. “This plan didn’t take much time, but it taught me that small, consistent efforts work,” Zhang Hua said. “Now I don’t fear English reading anymore; I actually look forward to my 20 minutes every evening.” 8. What was the main problem Zhang Hua had with English? A. She couldn’t speak English fluently. B. She struggled with English reading and scored low. C. She hated her English teacher, Mr. Liu. D. She had no time to study English. 9. What does the underlined phrase “get stuck on” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Felt interested in and finished quickly. B. Couldn’t move forward or make progress with. C. Found easy to understand and remember. D. Forgot about after reading for a while. 10. What can we infer from Zhang Hua’s experience with the “20-Minute Daily Reading Plan”? A. The plan only works for students who are bad at English. B. Zhang Hua will get a perfect score in English soon. C. Consistent practice is helpful for improving English reading skills. D. Mr. Liu’s plan requires reading 2 hours every day. 11. What is Zhang Hua’s attitude towards the “20-Minute Daily Reading Plan”? A. Grateful, because it helped her improve and build confidence. B. Angry, because it took too much of her free time. C. Unhappy, because it didn’t change her test score. D. Doubtful, because she thinks it’s too simple to work. 【答案】8. B 9. B 10. C 11. A 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。讲述了高中生张华通过坚持执行“20分钟每日阅读计划”克服英语阅读困难并提升成绩的故事。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“Zhang Hua, a 17-year-old Senior Two student at Star High School, once faced great trouble with English reading. 根据第一段“she’d get stuck on complex sentences and unfamiliar words — often spending 15 minutes just to finish a 500-word text(她就会被复杂的句子和不熟悉的单词get stuck on——通常要花15分钟才能读完一篇500字的文章。)”可知,她阅读有困难,因复杂句子和生词而无法继续阅读,get stuck on意为“无法前进或取得进展”。故选B。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“After three months, the changes were clear. She now finishes a 500-word passage in 8 minutes, and she can immediately tell the main idea after reading. (三个月后,变化很明显。她现在能在8分钟内读完一篇500字的文章,并且在读完后能立即说出文章的大意。)”和“Now I don’t fear English reading anymore; I actually look forward to my 20 minutes every evening.(现在我不再害怕英语阅读了;我真的很期待每天晚上的20分钟练习。)”可推知,从张华的“20分钟每日阅读计划”经验中得知,持续练习对提升阅读能力有效。故选C。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段““This plan didn’t take much time, but it taught me that small, consistent efforts work,” Zhang Hua said. “Now I don’t fear English reading anymore; I actually look forward to my 20 minutes every evening.”(张华说:“这个计划没有花太多时间,但它教会了我,小而持续的努力是有效的。”“现在我不再害怕英语阅读了;我真的很期待每天晚上的20分钟练习。”)”可知,她对“20分钟每日阅读计划”持感激态度,因其帮助她进步并建立信心。故选A。 D Rainforests provide much of the world’s oxygen. People have been trying to protect them for years. But another type of forest, the cloud forest, is just as important to humans. These forests are at the tops of mountains generally near the equator (赤道). These wet, wooded mountaintops are mainly in African and Central and South American countries. They are called “cloud forests” because their height allows for the formation of clouds among the trees. The trees in these forests pull water out of the clouds. The water gathers on the leaves and falls into small rivers below, which flow into towns at the bottom of the mountain. The yearly rainfall in these areas is about 180 centimetres. Cloud forests can pull in up to 60 percent of that. The water is important to the plants and the people in the area. It helps them survive. Cloud forests are also home to countless species of plants that can’t be found anywhere else. One small cloud forest has as many types of plants as there are in all of Europe. In fact, there are so many that scientists haven’t made a complete list of them yet. These forests are being destroyed at an increasing speed. Trees are being cut down, and roads are being built in their place. Some people have a goal to get government money to protect the forests. But they have had little success so far. Another way is to take the place of the destroyed plants with new ones. That, too, has been difficult because the plants are so special. There’s plenty of work to be done, but saving the cloud forests is still possible with creative solutions. 12. Where can you probably find cloud forests? A In North America. B. Far from the equator. C. In some African countries. D. At the foot of mountains. 13. How much rainfall is pulled in by the cloud forests in those areas every year? A. About 60 cm. B. About 108 cm. C. About 180 cm. D. About 300 cm. 14. What is the main idea of paragraph 3? A. Europe is short of plant types. B. Scientists are working on a list. C. Cloud forests are getting smaller. D. Cloud forests house many plants. 15. Where can we probably find the text? A. In a storybook. B. In a travel guide. C. In a chemistry textbook. D. In a geography magazine. 【答案】12. C 13. B 14. D 15. D 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。介绍了对人类重要的一种森林——云雾林。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。由第二段“These forests are at the tops of mountains, generally near the equator (赤道). These wet, wooded mountaintops are mainly in African and Central and South American countries.(这些云雾林位于山顶,通常靠近赤道。这些潮湿、树木繁茂的山顶主要分布在非洲、中美洲和南美洲国家)”可知,云雾森林通常位于靠近迟赤道,分布在非洲、中美和南美国家。故选C。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。由第二段“The yearly rainfall in these areas is about 180 centimetres. Cloud forests can pull in up to 60 percent of that.(这些地区的年降雨量约为180厘米。云雾林可以吸收其中的60%)”可知,每年云雾林可以吸收降雨量为:180cm×60%=108 cm。故选B。 【14题详解】 主旨大意题。由第三段“Cloud forests are also home to countless species of plants that can’t be found anywhere else. One small cloud forest has as many types of plants as there are in all of Europe. In fact, there are so many that scientists haven’t made a complete list of them yet. If you have a big test coming up or just want to do well in class, studying is one of the best things you can do to improve your grade. B My high school life has been filled with many ups and downs, whether it was social or academic. C Zhang Hua, a 17-year-old Senior Two student at Star High School, once faced great trouble with English reading. B Zhang Hua will get a perfect score in English soon. C. Consistent practice is helpful for improving English reading skills. D. Mr. Liu’s plan requires reading 2 hours every day. 11 What is Zhang Hua’s attitude towards the “20-Minute Daily Reading Plan”? A. Grateful, because it helped her improve and build confidence. B. Angry, because it took too much of her free time. C. Unhappy, because it didn’t change her test score. D. Doubtful, because she thinks it’s too simple to work. D Rainforests provide much of the world’s oxygen. People have been trying to protect them for years. But another type of forest, the cloud forest, is just as important to humans. These forests are at the tops of mountains, generally near the equator (赤道). A. In North America. B. Far from the equator. C In some African countries. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you have a big test coming up or just want to do well in class, studying is one of the best things you can do to improve your grade.
