Be Careful with Popcorn Brain
Picture this: You’re reading a book or watching your favorite show, but you can’t help looking at your smart watch or your phone. Sound familiar? That’s popcorn brain in action.
Popcorn brain means that our brains jump from one thought to another in a quick, random way. Experts gave it the name because it’s like there’s a never-ending popcorn party in your head, with thoughts popping up everywhere.
Popcorn brain happens when we spend too much time on screens and get lots of notifications.
It makes it difficult for us to get focused and it’s bad for our learning. But don’t worry, my friends. Here’s some advice for you to fight it.
First, take control of your screen time. Stop getting those useless notifications. Then, try to set up digital device-free areas. Find areas where you won’t use things like smartphones. Enjoy the quiet and let your mind fly free. Exercising your body and brain also helps. Physical activities make your brain work better and help you get away from too much phone use. Besides, doing activities like word games or learning new skills will help you focus for a longer time. If you find yourself needing help, don’t be afraid to go to a doctor. Doctors can help you learn to change how you think and feel.

Every English learner needs to know how to ask for something in English. There are a number of ways to do this. If you know someone has something, you can ask for it with a polite question. If you don’t know, it’s possible to ask for something with a yes or no question. Be careful not to use the direct expressions. In other words, don’t say “Give me that”, but ask kindly as the following examples, “Do you have a pen I could borrow?” “Is there any water?” or “Did you buy any bread?”
If you know or see someone has something, ask a polite question with “could”, “may” or “might”.
It’s also possible to use “can” in some special situations. In the past, “can” was not used when people asked for something. It only had the meaning of being able to do something. In the UK, people mainly use “Can you lend me…?” or “Can I have …?”
It’s common to use “Could you lend/ hand/ give ....?” You can also use “May/ Can I borrow...?” “Can you lend me ..?” “May I have ...?” or “Can you hand/give me...?” Do not begin a sentence with “ please”, but you can add “please” at the end of the sentence to be polite.
