When Christina Zimmerman came back to work after having her baby, she struggled with depression. She almost intended to quit her job. But her school’s daycare, just a few rooms away, made all the difference. “I can be a teacher and a mom at the same time,” said Zimmerman, a fourth-grade teacher in Idaho. “Teaching is my dream, but I also want to be with my child. I didn’t want to choose.”
In states such as Idaho and Texas, many schools now provide affordable quality child care for teachers. This helps teachers stay in their jobs, especially women who often leave work to care for their children. It also helps schools keep more good teachers and gives young children a safe place to grow.
In Idaho, Principal Heather Yarbrough started an on-campus daycare at her school after remembering how hard it was to drop off her three-month-old daughter Grace with a caregiver at a faraway daycare center each day. Yarbrough said the feelings still haunt her, even 14 years later. She recalled that she cried every day for weeks, but couldn’t quit her job as a teacher. Today, many teachers at her school use the on-campus daycare, and it helps them stay in their jobs.
“This is a great strategy by which you can support both children, families and then the school’s workforce, and parties concerned welcome the idea,” said Molly Hillier, an instructional coach and mother of a child at the school.
In Texas, the Richardson school district runs two daycares that care for babies as young as six weeks old. Teachers only pay $350 per month, which is much less than regular daycares.
School-based child care not only helps teachers — it helps students, too. Happier teachers stay longer and build better relationships with kids. As one teacher said, “If teachers feel supported, they can give more to their students.”
24.Why did Zimmerman want to quit her teaching job?
A.She failed to get a pay raise. B.She had to take care of her baby.
C.She disliked teaching students. D.She lived far away from her school.
25.Which best explains the underlined word “haunt” in paragraph 3?
A.Cause repeated suffering. B.Bring peace of mind.
C.Show personal preference. D.Take up too much time.
26.What did Hillier say about the on-campus daycare?
A.It mainly aims to benefit pupils. B.It enables her to work from home.
C.It is a well-received program. D.It is expensive for most families.
27.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Teachers’ Struggles in Balancing Work and Family
B.Daycare Centers Are Facing Unexpected Hardships
C.Mothers’ Love and Its Impact on Children’s Growth
D.School Daycare Helps Teachers Stay in the Classroom

More and more English-educated Chinese Singaporean parents are realizing the importance for their children to be not only good at the all important English language, but also good at Chinese. China has become a great political and economic superpower and they want their children to become bilingual.
It is common knowledge that, to master any language, especially one's mother tongue, one must begin from childhood. But there are challenges and barriers for children of English-speaking homes to succeed in their journey towards bilingualism.
Take my family as an example. While my wife and I are products of English education, we had some foundation(基础)in Chinese which we kept up in our working life. But the language of communication in our home is mainly English.
We are glad that our three children, had between eight and eleven years' Chinese schooling before switching over to English schools. Their foundation in Chinese has become an advantage in their adult life. They can hold their own in the spoken language, but would find it hard to write a business letter in Chinese for lack of usage.
We have a grandson who will be two years old shortly. His parents have given my wife and I the unenviable(令人为难的,令人不愉快的)task of making him bilingual. It is a very tough assignment, as we are with him for only a couple of hours on most days. For the rest of the time, he is being surrounded by English sounds by his busy parents.
Fortunately, our perseverance is paying off. After eight months, he has been used to hearing Chinese sounds, and even he can now quite comfortably identify common everyday objects in Chinese.
28. Why is it becoming necessary for some Chinese Singaporean children to learn Chinese?
A. Because most of the Singaporeans come from China.
B. Because their parents are missing their motherland.
C. Because China has become a great political and economic superpower.
D. Because China is the official language in the UN.
29. The underlined word “bilingual” in Paragraph 1 probably means
A. a person who knows English B. a person who knows Chinese
C. a person who knows only one language D. a person who knows two languages
30. What do we know about the author and his children?
A. He lives in China now. B. His children hate learning English.
C. He usually speaks English at home. D. His three children master Chinese very well.
31. The author used the example of teaching his grandson mainly to prove that ________ .
A. there are challenges for children of English-speaking homes to learn Chinese
B. his foundation in Chinese is a big advantage in teaching his grandson
C. he is quite good at teaching little children Chinese
D. learning Chinese is very popular in Singapore
D
New research suggests that a gene that governs the body's biological (circadian 昼夜节律) clock acts differently in males versus females and may protect females from heart disease. The study is the first to analyze circadian blood pressure rhythms (节奏) in female mice.
The body's circadian clock— the biological clock that organizes bodily activities over a 24-hour period—contributes to normal variations in blood pressure and heart function over the course of the day. In most healthy humans, blood pressure dips (下降) at night. People who do not experience this temporary drop, called "non-dippers", are more likely to develop heart disease. The circadian clock is made up of four main proteins (encoded by "clock genes") that regulate close to half of all genes in the body, including those important for blood pressure regulation.
Previous research has shown that male mice that are missing one of the four clock genes (PER1) become non-dippers and have a higher risk of heart and kidney disease. A research team studied the circadian response and blood pressure of female mice that lack PER1 and compared them with a healthy female control group. On both low-and high-salt diets, both groups "retained an obvious circadian rhythm" of blood pressure, the researchers explained. Unlike the male mice in previous research, the females without PER1 showed normal dips in blood pressure overnight.
These results suggest that the lack of PER1 acts differently in males and females. The findings are consistent with research showing that women are less likely to be non-dippers than men of the same age. "This study represents an important step in understanding sex differences in the regulation of cardiovascular (心血管) function by the circadian clock," the researchers wrote.
32. What does the new research find?
A. Biological clock may protect males from heart disease.
B. Biological blood pressure rhythms in female mice acts normally.
C. Biological clock organizes bodily activities over a 24-hour period.
D.A gene controlling biological clock works differently between sexes.
33. What role can circadian clock play according to the text? A.Helping males cure heart disease.
B. Helping blood pressure vary normally.
C. Contributing to abnormal variations in blood pressure.
D.Making up four main proteins regulating almost half of all genes.
34. Which word can best replace the underlined word "retained" in paragraph 3? A. treated. B.warned. C.kept. D.watched.
35. What would be a suitable title for the text? A.One clock gene is important
B. Females may benefit from body clock
C. New study analyzes blood pressure rhythms
D. Blood pressure of healthy humans dips at night

The oral exam (口试) is a long-held tradition in many schools and subjects. 36 Students must then answer properly, using materials they have learned in preparation for the exam. Showing plentiful knowledge of the subject results in passing the exam or an excellent grade.
37 As part of the completion of a program at the undergraduate or graduate levels, students might need to prove their knowledge and understanding of a subject area. Many science majors finish Bachelor’s studies with oral exams, or a particular program may require oral and written exams that show how a student has taken in all the materials learned in a four-year period. Usually study guides are available for these exams. 38
One valuable tip for students to succeed is to practice before the exam. 39 But by answering questions classmates or family ask them students can do as many practices as possible. On the day of the exam, students should dress plainly but respectfully, and in keeping with any dress requirements.
Students taking these exams should remember how much they have learned, which is hopefully quite a lot. 40 When waiting outside the test room, taking a deep breath and reminding themselves that the oral exam is a nice way to show off how much knowledge has been learned from teachers can help overcome stressful moments. Also, any other relaxation techniques that help can be used.
A. It raises questions to students in spoken form.
B. Behaving properly can earn students some favor.
C. They may not be able to predict all the questions.
D. Usually, students performing well are experienced.
E. Nervousness can even make the smartest student get stuck.
F. There are many examples in college where oral exams are used.
G. Therefore, prepared students tend not to be surprised by what they’re asked.

Dear Bill,
I am sorry to know you are having trouble with your life and study here. However, the situation is easy to change. Now, I’d like to give you some advice.

By doing all these, you can get used to your school life and live happily. Hope my advice can help you.
