I used to tell my friends that museums were a silly idea for a weekend getaway—until I visited one of them with my family last week.
We started by looking at some old paintings in a big room. My mom explained that they were created by famous artists a long time ago. And that’s when the trip started to get interesting for me.
Next, we went to a room with real dinosaur bones (骨头). They were huge, and I couldn’t believe that animals that big ever existed (存在). We learned how they lived and looked for food. It was cool!
Then, we entered a room with old handcrafts . There were bowls, musical instruments, and even a pyramid (金字塔)! I couldn’t believe they were made so long ago—without modern machines. It was amazing to see how people used to live back then.
Lastly, we visited a room with real live insects and animals. There were butterflies flying all around and even a big spider! I got a little scared, but my mom told me they were behind glass and couldn’t hurt me.
After we saw everything, we went to the gift shop. I got a cool ruler with dinosaur facts on it and a little toy dinosaur. My sister got a book about space, and my dad got a cool T-shirt.
Going to the museum was fun! I learned so much about history, science, and art. Guess what? I’m taking back everything I said about museums—and I can’t wait to go back and see what else is there!

Baymax is a tall, white, round robot. He is full of air and can move around. He works as a nurse and takes care of sick people. Baymax isn’t real, though. He is a character in the movie Big Hero 6.
Could we make a real-life Baymax? There have already been most of the pieces needed to create it. But putting them all together is another story. “There’re all kinds of things that need to come together to make something as amazing as Baymax,” says Alex Alspach, a robot expert at Toyota Research Institute in the USA.
To build a real-life Baymax, experts need to think about many things. They need the right hardware to make up the robot and the right software to control its movements. They need to plan what the robot looks like and make sure it’s safe for humans.
The real-life Baymax needs to be light. If he is too heavy, he might hurt his patients. That is why he should be soft on the outside and full of air inside. But keeping Baymax filled with air would be difficult as he would need to carry a lot of hardware. Heat is also a problem. The motors that make Baymax work will make lots of it. That’s dangerous.
The robot’s walk is another challenge. He should be able to move around small spaces. “I don’t know of anybody who can make a robot move like that right now,” says Cindy Bethel, an expert at Mississippi State University.
The real-life Baymax will also need lots of sensors . Scientists are working on sensors that can tell if a person is sick.
Most experts agree that big steps towards making the new robot will come soon. “I think kids will get to see that in their lifetime,” Alspach says.
23. What do we know about Baymax from Paragraph 1?
A. He is a doctor. B. He is very sick.
C. He is a small white robot. D. He is a movie character.
24. What do Alex Alspach’s words in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Baymax can tell amazing stories.
B. A computer is needed to control Baymax.
C. It’s not easy to create a robot like Baymax.
D. It’s not necessary to create a robot like Baymax.
25. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A Air. B. Heat. C. Hardware. D. Light.
26. How does Alex Alspach feel about making a robot like Baymax?
A. Proud. B. Worried. C. Surprised. D. Hopeful.
( D )
Some salty deserts are covered with patterns in six-sided shapes, and the ground looks like honeycombs (蜂窝). The six-sided shapes are always 1 to 2 meters across. Two of these deserts are Badwater Basin in California, USA and Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. For years, scientists have tried to find out the causes of the shapes.
The deserts are not as dry as they look. They have groundwater. A new study says this could help explain the mystery. Lucas Goehring, an expert in physics at Nottingham Trent University in England, led the study. He and his team came up with an explanation for the six-sided shapes.
According to Goehring, below the desert surface is a layer (层) of salty water. You can reach it by digging with your hands. In the hot summer months, the water evaporates (蒸发). This leaves only salt behind. Some of the salt goes into the next layer of water. This layer of water then becomes thicker and saltier than the one below it. The saltier water goes down and the fresher water goes up.
The process repeats itself to form what scientists call a convection roll (对流圈) which normally has a round shape. There are so many of the convection rolls and they press against each other to form the six-sided shapes.
Scientists say they did their work out of curiosity (好奇心). “Nature presents us with a fascinating mystery,” said Jana Lasser, another expert who helped with the study. “It makes us want to solve it.”
27. The writer mentions two deserts in Paragraph 1 to_______.
A. tell stories B. compare facts
C. show examples D. explain reasons
28. According to the new study the mystery is most probably caused by _______.
A. the movement of sand B. the strong sunlight in summer
C. the changing weather in the deserts D. the movement of underground water
29. Which of the following pictures shows a convection roll?
A. B.
C. D.
30. The writer wrote the passage to _______.
A. introduce a new study B. call for people to visit deserts
C. put forward some suggestions D. share some personal experiences

A. Air. B. Heat. C. Hardware. D. Light.
26. How does Alex Alspach feel about making a robot like Baymax?
A. Proud. B. Worried. C. Surprised. D. Hopeful.
【答案】23. D 24. C 25. B 26. D

【答案】One possible version:
Dear Su Nan,
I used to be like you! But don’t worry, and I’d like to give you some advice on how to improve your spoken English.
First, I think the best way is to practice speaking a lot. You can do this with your classmates on school days, or with your e-friends on weekends.
Second, I advise you to listen more. The more you hear, the more you can say. You can listen to English songs, English news and English talk shows. And try to remember the useful words and expressions you hear.
Third, you can improve your spoken English by learning from your mistakes. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Instead, you should find out what went wrong and learn to grow with your mistakes.
I hope the advice will help you.
Yours,
Li Hua
