It lies on the south of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (内蒙古自治区). Saihanba means “beautiful and high mountains”. Around the 10th century, the rulers of the Liao Dynasty (916—1125) made it a royal (皇家的) hunting place because it was home to beautiful forests, green grasslands, clear lakes and different kinds of wild animals. Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1644—1911) liked Saihanba so much that he made hunting there a royal festival. The royal festival finally stopped in 1860 because of no money and it had to be open to the public. After that, the cutting down of trees and wild fires changed green Saihanba into gray deserts. By the 1950s, the beauty of Saihanba had completely disappeared with only one tree left. The tree is now famous as “the Tree of Honor”. On seeing the tree, Chinese scientists made up their minds and dreamt of restoring Saihanba. In February, 1962, the plans were made and more than 120 foresters joined 242 local people in Saihanba to begin rebuilding it. Over the next 55 years, those first tree-planters fought against many difficulties to continue planting trees. After their death, their children and relatives followed their footsteps and went on with their hard work of planting trees. Today, the scientists’ dream has come true and beautiful grassland and flowers appear again around the tree of honor. Chinese people successfully changed Saihanba in the past half-century. 1.What’s the right order of events (事件) given in Paragraph 2? ①Saihanba became a royal hunting place. ②Saihanba was a desert and disappeared. ③Saihanba wasn’t closed to the public any more. ④Saihanba turned into the place for royal hunting festivals. And it rained a lot,” said Tubbat. “But sandstorms (沙暴) turned the green land into a desert.” Tubbat started to plant trees in 2002. He did all this for free and even spent most of their own money. “Many people do not understand why I do this. They don’t know the happiness I feel when I see the land turn green again,” he said. Tubbat is happy that more people have begun to plant trees after hearing his story. Some have even visited him to learn how to plant trees in the desert. “Trees can bring rain and animals,” he said, “I want to be a tree, to grow up in the desert and hold the sand until I die.” 1.How many trees did Tubbat plant? ___________________________________________ 2.What turned the green land into a desert? ___________________________________________ 3.When did Tubbat start to plant trees? ___________________________________________ 4.How did he feel when he saw the land turn green? ___________________________________________ 5.Why did some people visit him after hearing his story? ___________________________________________ 【答案】1.More than 50,000. 2.Sandstorms. 3.In 2002. 4.Happy. 5.To learn how to plant trees in the desert. 【导语】本文介绍了 Tubbat与他的妻子花了很多年的时间在沙漠中自费种树,与沙漠抗争的感人事迹。 1.根据“Tubbat planted more than 50,000 trees covering about the size of 133 football fields.”可知,他种了50000多棵树。故填More than 50,000. 2.根据“But sandstorms (沙暴) turned the green land into a desert.”可知,沙尘暴把绿地变成了沙漠。故填Sandstorms. 3.根据“Tubbat started to plant trees in 2002.”可知,他于2002年开始种树。故填In 2002. 4.根据“Many people do not understand why I do this.
