Scientists are suggesting that humans manage to contact people’s names with their appearance, and can even guess someone’s name based on how they look. Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel collected thousands of photos of people’s faces. They labeled each photo with four names. Then, they asked volunteers to guess which of the four names was correct. The volunteers guessed nearly four names correctly out of ten. It seems that humans are able to recognize (认出) certain characteristics of faces that can give them clues about someone’s name, Reader’s Digest reported. However, this only works when we’re looking at names within our own culture. In addition, the volunteers were not as good at guessing the real names of people who use nicknames more often than their real names. This shows that a person’s appearance is influenced by his name only if they use it often. This kind of face-name matching happens “because of a process of self-fulfilling prophecy (自我实现预言), as we become what other people expect us to become”,Ruth Mayo from the university told science news website Eurek Alert. Earlier studies have shown that gender (性别) and race (种族) stereotypes (刻板印象) can influence a person’s appearance. The researchers believe there are also similar stereotypes about names. For example, people manage to think that men named Bob should have rounder faces because the word itself looks round. People may think that women named Rose are beautiful. They expect them to be delicate and feminine, just like the flower they are named for. 38.What does the passage mainly tell us? A.A person’s appearance can be influenced by three factors. B.There are several ways to guess a stranger’s name. C.People can guess others’ names according to their appearance. D.It’s not polite to ask strangers about their names. 39.Dr Ruth Mayo thinks some people look like their names because of ________. A.their different cultures B.a self-fulfilling prophecy C.racial stereotypes D.their living environment 40.According to the passage, girls named Cherry are expected to ________. A.wear glasses B.have big eyes C.look cute and lovely D.have round faces 41.What do we know from this research? A.Nicknames have a bigger influence on people’s appearance. B.Gender and race have no influence on a person’s appearance. C.The volunteers were able to guess 40% of the names correctly. D.People are good at recognizing the different characteristics of faces. Scientists are suggesting that humans manage to contact people’s names with their appearance, and can even guess someone’s name based on how they look”可知,这篇文章告诉我们人们可以通过外表猜测别人的名字。故选C。 39. This kind of face-name matching happens ‘because of s process of self-fulfilling prophecy (自我实现预言), as we become what other people expect us to become’.” They expect them to be delicate and feminine, just like the flower they are named for.” The volunteers guessed nearly four names correctly out of ten”可知,每10个名字中,志愿者们猜对了近4个,所以有40%的正确率。故选C。 ①Everybody knows that Earth spins from west to east. That is to say, it appears to be turning counterclockwise (逆时针) rapidly when viewed from above the North Pole. But what if Earth started spinning the other way? ②Scientists from Germany have made a computer simulation in which Earth spins in the opposite direction-clockwise when viewed from above the North Pole. This showed them some interesting things about the weather and geography on Earth, Live Science reported. ③As Earth spins in a counterclockwise direction, it shapes certain ocean currents (洋流). The direction of ocean (3b) currents, together with winds, produces different weathers around the globe. But a backward spin changes the ocean currents and winds. ▲ Western areas of the lands on Earth cool down as the eastern parts warm up. Winters become even colder in northwestern Europe, while eastern Russia becomes warmer than before. Rain no longer falls on the planet's wettest places. ④Another result of a backward spin is that Earth becomes greener. Scientists found that global desert areas reduce from 42 million square kilometers to 31 million square kilometers. This may have something to do with the changing weather. Therefore, you can see rich green landscapes from Central Africa to the Middle East, which are mostly covered by deserts now. More surprisingly, the Sahara  Desert becomes an oasis. ⑤However, deserts don’t disappear. They just appear in some places in which they never appeared before. Deserts would cover North America, where countries like the United States and Canada lie. Sand dunes would replace the Amazon rainforest in South America. ⑥A backward spin would keep the main features of Earth’s geography, such as the size, shapes and positions of lands and oceans. But it would change the interactions between circulating air, ocean and geography lead scientist Florian Ziemen told Live Science. 42.Which of the following sentences can be put in the blank of Paragraph 3? A.Anyway deserts cover the planet. B.Therefore, the weather is different. C.However the positions of oceans changes. D.Surprisingly the area of lands is larger. 43.What would a backward spin bring to Earth? A.The direction of ocean currents and winds would be different. B.Rain would no longer fall on western areas of the lands on Earth. C.Deserts would become larger and cover the planet’s wettest places. D.The size, shapes and positions of lands and oceans would be changed. 44.The passage is most probably taken from a magazine on __________. A.history B.traveling C.biology D.geography 45.Which of the following is the right structure of the passage? 根据“But a backward spin changes the ocean currents and winds.”及下文的 “Western areas of the lands on Earth cool down as the eastern parts warm up. But it would change the interactions between circulating air, ocean and geography lead scientist Florian Ziemen told Live Science.” 故选A。 44. 根据“Everybody knows that Earth spins from west to east. That is to say, it appears to be turning counterclockwise (逆时针) rapidly when viewed from above the North Pole. But what if Earth started spinning the other way?”可知,第一段提出一个问题;根据 “Scientists from Germany have made a computer simulation in which Earth spins in the opposite direction-clockwise when viewed from above the North Pole. This showed them some interesting things about the weather and geography on Earth, Live Science reported.” (每空一词) 46.His (灵魂) has left him and all that remains is the shell of his body. 根据“His...(灵魂) has left him and all that remains is the shell of his body.” 47.With a computer (连接) to the Internet, learners can have the courses anywhere. 48.We should treasure our own (宝贵的)art and culture, such as shadow play and paper cutting. 49.What difficulty do you have (处理) with the problem of stress? 根据have difficulty (in) doing“做某事有困难”,deal with“处理”。故填dealing。 50.Mom requires that all family members finish our meal in total (沉默). 51.Ms Meng Wanzhou’s returning to China is not only her (person) victory. 52.Each of us should try our best to spread love and (warm) to build a better world. 根据“spread love and...” 53.Learn to enjoy the feeling of (sad), and it will help you think deeply. 54.Pay attention to your (pronounce) when reading these new English words. 55.The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed the top 10 causes of (die) across the globe. 根据“The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed the top 10 causes of...” How do you feel about exams? If you’re anxious (焦虑的) about your exams, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Every year many young people sit exams and most of them will face some anxiety before the big day. Eating the right food can feed your brain and keep you active. Nutritional therapist Kerry Torrens recommends making breakfast the most important meal of the day. She recommends eating energy, like oats (燕麦) and eggs to help improve memory as we age. And she also advises drinking lots of water. Some research says students who take water into the exam hall may even improve their grades. A good night’s sleep will always help you work and think better the next day. If you get good sleep, you can remember the information you have revised better. And it’s good to wind down before bedtime too—no watching TV or chatting on social media! Another good way to reduce your stress is to learn to free your mind. Lisa Artis from the Sleep Council, says when your mind can’t take in any more information, you need to stop. It’s good to take breaks or reward yourself, like a cake or a quick run around the block. And don’t forget that there are some people who will always be more anxious than you: your parents! They’re there to support you but they’ll also be worrying about you and the final results. So maybe sometimes you need to give them some advice—take it easy, everything will be OK! 56.Which diet does Kerry Torrens recommend for breakfast? 57.What can’t you do to have a good night’s sleep before bedtime? 58.How can you free your mind when you have trouble studying? 59.Why are your parents also anxious? 60.What else can you do to reduce your stress about exams? 56.(Having) Oats, eggs and water. 57.We can’t watch TV or chat on social media. 58.We can stop (to take breaks or reward ourselves/have a cake or a quick run )./By taking breaks or rewarding ourselves/having a cake or a quick run. 59.They’re worrying/worried about us and the final results. 60.We can share/talk about problems with our friends/classmates. Did you see that?” he asked. “Jackson just totally fell down there!” “Oh, no! Is he okay?” asked Eva. “It looks like he hurt his knee.” Just as they were still talking about this, Mandy caught up with them. “What are you guys talking about?” she asked. “Jackson just fell and hurt his knee,” said Eva. “Was he bleeding (流血)?” asked Mandy. The story began to spread. Within an hour, Kevin heard the whole story. “Jackson got hit by a car on his way home. There was blood everywhere, and he was sent to hospital. That night, Oliver got more information. “ ▲ He doesn’t even remember anything about the accident! He won’t be at school for at least four weeks.” The next morning, everybody at school was talking about Jackson. “Lucky Jackson,” Maya said. “He gets to miss so much school.” “The poor guy can’t even move, and you think he’s lucky?” said Kathy. Bob shook his head sadly, “He was so good at soccer—what if he can never play again?” “Maybe we should send him a card or visit him in the hospital,” suggested Bill. “Will he even remember us?” asked Gina. “I can’t believe he lost his memory!” Lisa cried. A.A Funny Friend B.He Said, She Said C.A Terrible Accident D.He Hurt, She Cared Have you ever had an experience where you meet someone new, learn his name and think to yourself, “Wow, they really look just like their names!” What does this mean exactly? ①Everybody knows that Earth spins from west to east. (每空一词) The sun was dropping down the mountains far away.
