Back in 1958, I was crazy about the Norfolk and Western 746. The smooth bullet-nose engine with its orange and yellow lines and shiny streamlined black tender (车厢) seemed to have cast a spell on me.
Together the engine and tender measured a little shy of 2 feet — enormous by the toy train standards of the day. Even better, the 746 had a working headlight and smoker, and its tender sang high.
Unfortunately, the amazing 746 also had an amazing price — $50, equal to about $450 today. That was far more than my grandfather could afford. Instead, I had to be content with his little Lionel plastic, which was SIX INCHES shorter than the 746 and had no headlight, no smoker or no sound! But that was the best that my grandfather could give me at that time.
Years passed, and I was in my 30s. Superior sound systems and computer controls dominated toy trains. I never gave a look. My interest in toy trains, I firmly believed, had faded, so did my admiration for the 746, since my grandfather was not with me. The 746 was never called to mind. On an ordinary day, however, I happened to see the 746 outside the window of a train show. Just one-look, I could not look away. Childhood memories that I tried to hide in the depths of my heart raced through my mind, happy or sad.
That day I took the 746 home and placed it in the center of the room, and let my childhood dream sing its way around me. Smoke rose out from the engine and the soft song sounded from its tender. It seemed as if I could see the soft light in grandfather's eyes and hear his cheerful laughter.
4. Which best describes the 746 in the author’s eyes?
A. Its beauty had a special appeal. B. It was the largest train in 1958.
C. Its price rocketed from $50 to $450. D. Its measurement was at a disadvantage.
5. How did the author feel when receiving his little Lionel plastic?
A. Visibly relieved. B. Terribly ashamed.
C. Really delighted. D. Slightly discontented.
6. What happened to the author in his 30s?
A. He left his grandfather alone. B. He didn’t favor the 746 at all.
C. He admired advanced toy trains. D. He attempted not to recall the past.
7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Toy Trains: Childhood in History B. The 746: Childhood Memories of Love
C. Toy Trains: Memories of A Generation D. The 746: A Perfect Gift from My Grandfather
C
Public health data signals a genuine crisis in adolescent mental health: rising rates of anxiety, depression, and hopelessness. But as we worry about teens who are struggling, we can’t ignore another mounting effect — the burdens that are shouldered by their friends and peers in an “always on” world.
We have studied teens and tech for over a decade. Their networks are ever-expanding, in no small part because there’s a sense that being nice means accepting fellow requests from acquaintances and friends-of-friends. And it’s not just staying connected — it’s keeping up with what others post, too.
Social media platforms thus make it technically possible to maintain more relationships than we are historically actually wired to track and manage. The result is an overwhelming wave of social information. It’s especially intense for adolescents whose developmental sensitivities drive them to care deeply about what their peers are doing and thinking.
Significant stress comes with trying to be a “good friend” in the age of social media. Friendship requires both public and behind-the-scenes support. Even before a social media post is made public, close friends can be pulled into photo selection, editing, and final examination. Besides, they need to respond in the right way and in the right amount of time, which differs from one relationship to another. Replying too quickly can be seen as over-eager, especially when the friendship is new or not close. But when it’s a close friend, too long a lag (延迟) can be hurtful.
The qualities that are key to building or breaking friendships are actually the same as they’ve always been: mutual (相互的) sharing of joys and sorrows, a give and take of acceptance and support, and an ability to weather and resolve conflicts. But technologies have transformed how friendships play out. Social media increases the burdens that come along with being a good friend. Too often, these dynamics hit teens hard in ways that are ignored by adults. And that is what should be changed with the help of parents, schools and other parts of society.
8. What makes teenagers' networks continue to expand?
A. The pressure to be nice. B. The requests of their parents.
C. The need to meet more people. D. The burden of living independently.
9. What does the author think of being a good friend in the age of social media?
A. Risk-taking. B. Time-saving. C. Challenging. D. Exciting.
10. What should be changed according to the last paragraph?
A. The influences of social media on teen friendship.
B. The relations between parents and their teens.
C. The conflicts between schools and parents.
D. The qualities of being a teen friend.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. What makes teens become more sensitive to their peers' needs.
B. How social media has made teen friendships more stressful.
C. How teens nowadays gain long-standing friendships.
D. Why more teens are addicted to social media.
D
In the animal kingdom, killer whales (虎鲸) are social stars: they travel in different family groups, care for grandchildren, and even imitate human speech. Now, scientists are adding one more behavior to the list: forming fast friendships. A new study shows killer whales can rival animals such as chimpanzees and macaques (a kind of monkey), and even humans when it comes to the kind of “social touch” that is a sign of strong friendship.
Some ocean animals maintain social structures — including male dolphins (海豚) that learn the “names” of their close friends. But there is little proof about wild killer whales. That’s where drone (无人机) technology came in. Michael Weiss, a behavioral ecologist, teamed up with his workmates to launch drones, flying them 30 to 120 meters above a group of killer whales. That was high enough not to trouble the whales, marking the first time drones have been used to study friendly physical contact in whales.
The researchers recorded over 800 examples of physical contact between individuals. Those included slippery hugs, back-to-back and nose-to-nose touches between pairs of whales. Other whales playfully threw young whales into the air, letting them fall into the water. Besides, the drone pictures showed clear preferences among individuals, usually for one “best friend” of the same sex and age. Take J49 and J51 — two distantly related young males aged 9 and 6 — for example. “Every time you see a group of whales, those two are right there communicating with each other,” Weiss says.
The young led most of these interactions, rather than the older females or males. Older males in particular were less important. “The young individuals really seem to be the glue (胶水) holding the groups together, Weiss says. As individuals age, this gradual loss of “centrality” is known in many social mammals, including humans. That finding is “especially appealing” to biological anthropologist Stacey Tecot, who didn’t join in the study. “Scientists have long observed this social aging trend in animals, but there are still many unanswered questions,” she says. That certainly on the researchers’ radar. “We’re already gathering new proofs, with more advanced equipment,” says Weiss.
12. What does the underlined word “rival” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Rise to. B. Be equal to. C. Benefit from. D. Depend on.
13. What is new about Weiss’ research?
A. The research method. B. The size of the research team.
C. The target of the research. D. The time spent on the research.
14. What did Weiss find about J49 and J51?
A. They have a long-lasting friendship.
B. Their communication is difficult to understand.
C. Their communicating ways change frequently.
D. They prefer playing with young female whales.
15. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. More researchers will take part in the study.
B. Other scientists take a negative attitude to the research.
C. Researchers will get more proofs to study killer whales.
D. Researchers will uncover the social aging trend in animals soon.

A 5. D 6. D 7. B

根据第一段“The smooth bullet-nose engine with its orange and yellow lines and shiny streamlined black tender (车厢) seemed to have cast a spell on me. (光滑的子弹头发动机,橙色和黄色的线条,闪亮的流线型黑色发动机似乎对我下了魔咒)”和第二段“Together the engine and tender measured a little shy of 2 feet — enormous by the toy train standards of the day. Even better, the 746 had a working headlight and smoker, and its tender sang high. (发动机和车厢加在一起差不多有2英尺——按照当时的玩具火车标准,这是巨大的。更好的是,746有一个工作的前灯和吸烟,火车声音响亮)”可知,作者对746玩具火车非常迷恋,认为它非常完美,无以伦比,它的美丽有一种特殊的吸引力。故选A。
根据第三段“Instead, I had to be content with his little Lionel plastic, which was SIX INCHES shorter than the 746 and had no headlight, no smoker or no sound! (相反,我不得不满足于他的小Lionel塑料,它比746短6英寸,没有前灯,没有烟头,也没有声音!)”可推知,在作者看来,这个小Lionel塑料和746相比差得太多,所以稍微有点不满意。故选D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Superior sound systems and computer controls dominated toy trains. I never gave a look. My interest in toy trains, I firmly believed, had faded, nor did my admiration for the 746, since my grandfather was not with me. The 746 was never called to mind. (先进的音响系统和电脑控制主导了玩具火车。我根本没看它一眼。我坚信,自从祖父不在我身边,我对玩具火车的兴趣已经消退,我对746的倾慕也没有了,我再也没有想起746)”可推知,作者30多岁时,因为祖父不在了,所以他尽量不去回忆过去。故选 D。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“It seemed as if I could see the soft light in grandfather's eyes and hear his cheerful laughter. (我仿佛能看到祖父眼中柔和的光芒,听到他欢快的笑声)”和全文内容可知,文章以746火车玩具为主线,通过对作者自年少时到成年后对它情感变化的描述,表达了作者对童年时期祖父的爱的怀念。由此可知,“746:童年的爱的回忆”适合作为文章标题。故选B。
A 9. C 10. A 11. B

B 13. A 14. A 15. C

根据划线单词上文“In the animal kingdom, killer whales (虎鲸) are social stars: they travel in different family groups, care for grandchildren, and even imitate human speech.(在动物界中,虎鲸是社交明星:它们以不同的家族群体出游,照顾孙辈,甚至模仿人类语言。)” 划线单词所在句“A new study shows killer whales can rival animals such as chimpanzees and macaques (a kind of monkey), and even humans when it comes to the kind of “social touch” that is a sign of strong friendship.(一项新的研究表明,在表示深厚友谊的‘社交接触’方面,虎鲸可以与黑猩猩、猕猴甚至人类_____” ),根据上文所提到的虎鲸的社交能力和行为,所以这里应该是指虎鲸在这方面的能力与黑猩猩、猕猴甚至人类相匹敌,因此“rival”的意思应该是“与……相匹敌”。选项B“Be equal to.(等于、与……相匹敌)”与此相符。故选B。

That was high enough not to trouble the whales, marking the first time drones have been used to study friendly physical contact in whales.(但关于野生虎鲸的社交行为,几乎没有证据。 故选A。
根据文章第三段“Take J49 and J51 — two distantly related young males aged 9 and 6 — for example. “Every time you see a group of whales, those two are right there communicating with each other,” Weiss says.(以J49和J51为例,它们是两个血缘关系较远的年轻雄性,分别为9岁和6岁。“每次你看到一群鲸鱼时,它们两个都在那里互相交流,”Weiss说。)”可知,J49和J51每次看到一群鲸鱼时都会互相交流,说明它们之间有长久的友谊。故选A。
根据文章最后一段““Scientists have long observed this social aging trend in animals, but there are still many unanswered questions,” she says. That certainly on the researchers’ radar. “We’re already gathering new proofs, with more advanced equipment,” says Weiss.(“科学家们长期以来一直在观察动物中的这种社交老化趋势,但仍有许多未解之谜,”她说。这肯定在研究人员的研究范围内。“我们正在用更先进的设备收集新的证据,”Weiss说。)”可知,研究者们希望有更多的数据来进行研究,也就是研究者们将获得更多证据来研究虎鲸。故选C。

【答案】One possible version:
Dear Jack,
I have received your letter saying that you’re having trouble choosing clubs in your new high school. I totally get why you’re so confused! Starting high school is already a big step, and adding so many club options just makes it more overwhelming. Let me share some advice that helped me when I was in your shoes.
Firstly, I suggest you consider your true interests rather than following the crowd for the reason that joining a club you genuinely enjoy will bring long-term satisfaction and growth. Additionally, why not make use of the trial sessions many clubs offer? This way, you can experience them firsthand before deciding. Ultimately, it’s advisable to choose just one or two clubs at first. Overloading yourself may affect your studies and rest, which are equally important.
I sincerely hope you’ll find my suggestions helpful. Have confidence, and enjoy your high school journey!
Yours,
Li Hua
