Winning the T. S. Eliot prize came as a shock to American poet Peter Gizzi. “I had zero expectations,” he says. In fact, the 65-year-old says he almost cried when his name was read out for his collection Fierce Elegy.
Born in Michigan in 1959, Gizzi delayed going to college and instead joined a music community in New York. As someone who didn’t grow up in a poetry-heavy background, Gizzi wasn’t surprised by some criticism. Even his personal favorites are “outsider poets”. “The poets that have influenced me are not totally unknown, but they’re definitely not big award-winning poets like Louise Glück,” said Gizzi.
Poetry first came into Gizzi’s life in heartbreaking circumstances when his father died in a plane crash. It was when his brother Michael, also a noted poet, wrote a piece called Requiem in March, that made Gizzi realize the possibilities of what poetry could do. He realized poetry was the way. A light came on and he has never stopped reading since then.
Many of the poems in Fierce Elegy try to grasp at what might be beyond death. For Gizzi, the elegy (挽歌) can be a tool that helps us to understand life in a deeper way. It also allows us to see the small joys that compose a life, and how those small joys are actually massive. “Joy and sorrow share a very complex ecosystem. We can’t have one without the other. As the world becomes constantly renewed, it’s also constantly dying,” he says. “I believe the elegy can take a broken heart in a fierce world and transform it into a fierce heart in a broken world.”
George Oppen, an American Objectivist poet, said: “I like all the little words: tree, house, hill. These are the words in which we live. Gizzi says more by saying less. Poems are as much about what’s not there as what’s there, right?”
4. What can we infer about Gizzi from paragraph 2?
A. He admired the works of famous poets. B. He preferred the traditional way of poetry.
C. He took an unconventional path into poetry. D. He followed professional advice to be a poet.
5. What caused Gizzi to realize the power of poetry?
A. His father’s death. B. The collection Fierce Elegy.
C. His literary background. D. The poem Requiem in March.
6. How does Gizzi describe the relationship between joy and sorrow?
A. They are closely connected. B. They are merely personal.
C. They are constantly changing. D. They are often misunderstood.
7. What does George Oppen think of Gizzi’s poems?
A. Bright and energetic. B. Formal and emotional.
C. Brief and meaningful. D. Dramatic and powerful.

Pier Vittorio Mannucci, assistant professor of organizational behavior at London Business School, and his colleagues wanted to test what impact new blood could make on a team. They focused on Doctor Who — a TV program that first aired in 1963. The researchers looked at the composition of core crew members for 273 episodes (集) of Doctor Who, between 1963 and 2014. Overall, they identified 200 individual crew members.
For each episode, the researchers flagged when a new person was brought aboard the team. Next, they involved two critics to rate the creative qualities of each episode of Doctor Who. The researchers found that the teams with more new faces produced the high-rated episodes. On the contrary, the more closed a core group was-fewer new faces, unchanged teams-the worse average ratings those episodes received. The takeaway? By lightly shaking things up quite frequently, study showed, teams can work more creatively, and produce better work.
One key thing to keep in mind: teams just need one or two new faces. “It’s just a little bit of disruption (扰乱),” emphasizes Mannucci. “You do not have to disrupt and change everyone in the office-that’s a terrible example, ‘OK, I did this project with Bob and Kate. And the next project, with Kate and Mary. And the following with Kate and Mary — but then we bring in John.’”
The theory may be applicable to any team in any work setting, not just TV crews. Mannucci says that television is a great place to test theories like this because you have lots of opportunities to see how the team’s finished changes over time. The same goes for industries like product design, he says, where teams work on many projects, harder to confirm the findings in some other work environments, like industries where workers may work on only two big projects at a time over the course of a year, such as consulting — you have fewer chances to test how the product changes with each group of fresh workers.
8 What did the research into Doctor Who focus on?
A. How new crew members influenced a team. B. How the TV program achieved its popularity.
C. How a new member became part of the team. D. How each of its episodes was created originally.
9. What does the underlined part “The takeaway” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The concern. B. The challenge. C. The conclusion. D. The conflict.
10. What does the example in paragraph 3 try to highlight?
A. A team should be open to newcomers. B. Effective teamwork is the key to success.
C. New faces may produce negative changes. D. A small staff change will do a team good.
11. Which of the following might Mannucci agree with?
A. The findings are applicable to big projects.
B. Testing the theory in consulting is challenging.
C. It is necessary to test the theory in more TV shows.
D. Product design is not a good place to confirm the findings.
D
Now, artificial intelligence (AI) is coming for the most attractive and exciting jobs. Stars may worry that AI is stealing their work and giving less talented performers the skills to take away their audience. In fact, the famous individuals complaining the most loudly about the new technology are the ones who stand to benefit the most. Far from weakening star power, AI will make the biggest celebrities bigger than ever by allowing them to be in all markets, in all types of media, at all times.
This isn’t the first time that technology has changed the rules of the fame game. People started talking about stars in the 18th century when the widespread access to reading materials made it possible to be truly famous within your lifetime. Film and radio originally seemed like a threat to stars, who worried their live performances would be devalued. In fact, those technologies started the era of the superstar, a term that caught on in the 1920s. A similar worry greeted the invention of television. But again, the new tech made the famous even more so, bringing them into every living room.
As AI-generated content floods into the entertainment business, artists and entertainment professionals are worrying once more that their fame will be reduced — and again, the outcome is likely to be the opposite. These opportunities come with conditions attached. Artists are right to worry about copyright, which must be protected if AI is not to become a legalised form of piracy. Until these copyright concerns are addressed, AI will be a legal Wild West.
The bigger question is how the age of the all-around superstar will appeal to audiences. The risk is boredom. AI is brilliant at remixing and repeating old material but less good at creating exciting content that, for now, remains a human specialty.
Yet the entertainment market is highly self-correcting. Audiences have the power to turn a hot hit into a has-been one in an instant, as stars are all too aware. While AI-powered entertainment grows, consumers still seem to enjoy human drama. Sport, perhaps the most AI-proof, real-life event there is, has seen its value to media companies rise in recent years.
12. What is the primary concern of stars in paragraph 1?
A. The inability to master AI. B. The low level of their acting skills.
C. The decline in their popularity. D. The improvement of audience’s taste.
13. Why does the author mention “film, radio and television”?
A. To show the difficulties facing the stars then.
B. To prove the techno-panic is common in history.
C. To confirm AI will surely come into every family.
D. To predict the trend of the technological development.
14. How can superstars attract audience according to the text?
A. By avoiding the use of AI. B. By cooperating with directors.
C. By learning more advanced technologies. D. By improving content creation.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The era of AI is around the corner.
B. AI creates a brand-new entertainment industry.
C. AI makes stars worried and audience demanding.
D. AI is more of a helper than an imagined threat to stars.

Every night, lying awake in bed,I waited for the train to stop, waited for the sound of his work boots dropping on the step, and waited for his voice calling,“I'm home!"
Every night,as I lay there,I stared at the window and the curtains Ma made from empty flour sacks(面粉袋)。Sometimes the train stopped-for someone else' s Pa coming home. Not mine, not yet.
Every night,Ma came to kiss me good-night-after the train had gone by.She had been listening, too. “Go to sleep.Your Pa will be home soon.Maybe for Thanksgiving.”
How could I be thankful without my Pa?
I went to sleep with the sound of train wheels in my head, whispering,“Maybe tomorrow, maybe tomorrow.”
One morning, the smell of coffee woke me.I ran into the kitchen. There he was!Pa lifted me onto his shoulders."How's my boy? You've gotten so big that I can barely lift you up anymore.”
He put me down, and I stared at the two sacks on the table. One said FLOUR.I tried reading the other: S-U-G-A-R.Pa whistled admiringly and winked(眨眼)at me.Ma didn't say no when Pa sprinkled(撒)a bit of that precious white sugar on my bread.
Ma said,"I'm going to bake a pie for your Pa's homecoming dinner.Go downstairs,Jimmy, and bring me that jar of apples."She smiled at me with a"mind now"look.

C 5. D 6. A 7. C

As someone who didn’t grow up in a poetry-heavy background, Gizzi wasn’t surprised by some criticism. Even his personal favorites are “outsider poets”. “The poets that have influenced me are not totally unknown, but they’re definitely not big award-winning poets like Louise Glück,” said Gizzi.(1959 年出生于密歇根州的吉齐推迟了上大学的时间,而是加入了纽约的一个音乐社区。
根据第三段“It was when his brother Michael, also a noted poet, wrote a piece called Requiem in March, that made Gizzi realize the possibilities of what poetry could do.(正是他的兄弟迈克尔,也是一位著名的诗人,写了一首名为《三月的安魂曲》的诗,让吉齐意识到诗歌的可能性)”可知,是《三月的安魂曲》这首诗让 Gizzi 意识到诗歌的力量。
根据第四段“Joy and sorrow share a very complex ecosystem. We can’t have one without the other.(欢乐和悲伤有着非常复杂的关系。两者缺一不可)”可知,Gizzi 认为欢乐和悲伤是紧密相连的。故选A。
根据最后一段“George Oppen, an American Objectivist poet, said: “I like all the little words: tree, house, hill. These are the words in which we live. Gizzi says more by saying less.
8. What did the research into Doctor Who focus on?
A. How new crew members influenced a team. B. How the TV program achieved its popularity.
C. How a new member became part of the team. D. How each of its episodes was created originally.
9. What does the underlined part “The takeaway” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A The concern.
A 9. C 10. D 11. B

根据第一段中“Pier Vittorio Mannucci, assistant professor of organizational behavior at London Business School, and his colleagues wanted to test what impact new blood could make on a team. They focused on Doctor Who — a TV program that fiist aired in 1963. (伦敦商学院组织行为学助理教授皮耶尔・维托里奥・曼努奇及其同事,想测试新成员能对团队产生何种影响。他们将研究焦点放在了《神秘博士》这部电视剧上 —— 该剧于 1963 年首次播出。)”可知,这项针对《神秘博士》的研究重点是新剧组人员对团队的影响。故选A。
根据划线部分上文“The researchers found that the teams with more new faces produced the high-rated episodes. On the country, the more closed a core group was-fewer new faces, unchanged teams-the worse average ratings those episodes received. (研究人员发现,有更多新面孔的团队制作了高收视率的剧集。在全国范围内,一个核心小组越封闭——新面孔越少,队伍越老——这些剧集的平均收视率就越低。)”以及后文“By lightly shaking things up quite frequent, study showed, teams can work more creatively, and produce better work. (研究表明,通过频繁地轻微调整,团队可以更有创造力地工作,并产出更好的成果。)”可知,上文提到新面孔越少剧集的平均收视率就越低,下文指出可以通过微调让团队更有创造力,因此划线部分指上文提到的现象的结论,用于引出下文。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。 根据第三段中“One key thing to keep in mind: teams just need one or two new faces. “It’s just a little bit of disruption,” emphasizes Mannucci. (需要记住的一个关键点是:团队只需要一两个新面孔。Mannucci强调:“这只是轻微的调整。”)”以及所举例子可知,该例子旨在强调小幅的人员变动对团队有益。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“The same goes for industries like product design, he says, where teams work on many projects, harder to confirm the findings in some other work environments, like industries where workers may work on only two big projects at a time over the course of a year, such as consulting — you have fewer chances to test how the product changes with each group of fresh workers. (他说,产品设计等行业也是如此,因为团队要做很多项目,所以在其他一些工作环境中很难确认结果,比如在咨询等行业,员工一年可能只做两个大项目,这样一来,你测试产品如何随着每组新员工而变化的机会就更少了。)”可知,Mannucci会认同在咨询行业测试该理论具有挑战性这一观点。故选B。
C 13. B 14. D 15. D

根据第一段中“Stars may worry that AI is stealing their work and giving less talented performers the skills to take away their audience. (明星们可能会担心,AI正在窃取他们的工作,并让那些才华稍逊的表演者获得技能,从而抢走他们的观众)”可知,明星们的主要担忧是受欢迎程度的下降。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Film and radio originally seemed like a threat to stars, who worried their live performances would be devalued. In fact, those technologies started the era of the superstar, a term that caught on in the 1920s. A similar worry greeted the invention of television. But again, the new tech made the famous even more so, bringing them into every living room.
根据第四段中“AI is brilliant at remixing and repeating old material but less good at creating exciting content that, for now, remains a human specialty. (AI在重新混合和重复旧材料方面非常出色,但在创造令人兴奋的内容方面却不太擅长,而目前这仍然是人类的专长)”可知,超级明星可以通过提高内容创作来吸引观众。故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“In fact, the famous individuals complaining the most loudly about the new technology are the ones who stand to benefit the most. Far from weakening star power, AI will make the biggest celebrities bigger than ever by allowing them to be in all markets, in all types of media, at all times. (事实上,对新科技抱怨最强烈的人恰恰是那些最有可能从中受益的人。AI不仅不会削弱明星的影响力,反而会让那些最大的明星变得比以往更加耀眼,因为它使他们能够随时随地出现在所有市场和各类媒体中)”可知,文章主要讨论了AI对明星的影响,指出AI不仅不会削弱明星的力量,反而会扩大明星的影响力。因此,对于明星而言,AI更像是一个帮手,而不是想象中的威胁。故选D项。

In our kitchen, there was a wooden table and three chairs-one for Pa,one for Ma,and one for me.I tried not to look at Pa's empty place.Pa had gone to the city to look for work.He had been gone for a long time.
There was no need.I knew how to be careful. It was the last jar-the one we had been saving and saving to welcome Pa home."When Pa comes home, there' ll be apple pic."I could hardly remember what pies tasted like.
