When you are in a new place or trying to find your way around, it’s important and necessary to know how to ask for directions. It can help you get to your destination faster and avoid getting lost. However, many ESL (English as a second language) learners may find it quite challenging to ask for directions in English. Don’t worry. This passage will help.
The first and most important step is to start the conversation politely. When you ask for directions, the way you make your request can make a difference to the reply you receive. Using polite expressions shows respect for the person you’re asking. This makes him/ her more likely (可能的) to help you. If possible, put on a smile.
Once you’ve started the conversation, you’d better ask for directions by using simple sentences. Here are some English expressions for you to ask for directions. Combining (结合) them with a friendly attitude will increase your chances of receiving helpful directions.

▲Excuse me. Can you give me directions to this house?
▲What’s the best way to reach Donald Street?
When receiving directions, it’s significant to make sure that you’ve understood them correctly to avoid getting lost or taking a longer path. You can repeat what the person has said, ask him to repeat certain details or ask for further explanation.
Finally, when you have the information you need, don’t forget to thank the person for his/ her help.

If you want to write the sentences: I must run or I’ll miss the last bus. You are not fully satisfied with it because the word “run” is not enough to describe how hurried you felt at that time. But where can you find a more proper word?
In a situation like this, you might need a thesaurus. A thesaurus is a kind of dictionary and words with similar meanings are grouped together there. It can help you find the most proper word to express your ideas. As for the sentence above, “fly” might be a better choice than “run”: I must fly or I’ll miss the last bus. With the help of a thesaurus, you can easily improve your writing.
★ Very few words are freely interchangeable (可互换的). Take the word “good” as an example. If you look up “good” in a thesaurus, you will get words like “superb” and “acceptable”. However, “a good meal” is different from “a superb meal” or “an acceptable meal”. “A superb meal” is far better than you would have expected. “An acceptable meal” is not bad, but it’s not good enough.
Using all kinds of words to express your point will make your writing more interesting. It will also help you communicate with your readers more clearly. As long as you use it correctly, a thesaurus can be a great tool.
32. In a thesaurus, we can find lists of words that have ________ meanings.
A. funny B. similar C. unbelievable D. opposite
33. Which of the following can be put in the ★ in Paragraph 3?

B. In fact, some words are funnier than other words.
C. However, you must be careful when using a thesaurus.
D. Besides, you can find some other ways to improve your writing.
34. To show how much you are satisfied with something, which of the following is correct?
A. Superb>good>acceptable. B. Superb>acceptable>good.
C. Acceptable>superb>good. D. Good>superb>acceptable.
35. The writer’s purpose (目的) of writing this passage is to ________.
A. teach people how to improve their English
B. call on people to read more passages
C. encourage people to use the right words
D. introduce some methods to learn new words

【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据“‘A superb meal’ is far better than you would have expected. ‘An acceptable meal’ is not bad, but it’s not good enough.”可知,“超级大餐”远超预期,“可接受的餐食”不算差但不够好,故可知满意度排序为:superb > good > acceptable。故选A。
【35题详解】

Ⅶ.任务型阅读: (共5小题,计10分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,完成下列各题。
Language students often think they have memory problems. They worry because they can’t remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn’t with their memory. The problem is with how they study.
To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it’s organized. When you put away a book or memory, you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.
How can you do this with vocabulary? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences that include it. Even better, you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a ▲ in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is “height”, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.
51. Why do most students think they have memory problems?
Because they ________.
52. How long does the short-term memory last?
It lasts for ________.
53. What is long-term memory compared to in the passage?
It is compared to ________.
54. What word can you put in the “ ▲ ”?

It refers to “________”.

▲Could you please tell me the way to the bookshop?
29. What does the author think of starting the conversation politely?
A. Easy. B. Meaningless. C. Necessary. D. Common.
30 The underlined word “significant” means “________” in the passage.
A. important B. careless C. unusual D. difficult
31. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Ways to avoid getting lost. B. Reasons for improving your English.
C. Ways to ask for directions in English. D. Steps for proper use of polite expressions.
C

34. To show how much you are satisfied with something, which of the following is correct?
A. Superb>good>acceptable. B. Superb>acceptable>good.
C. Acceptable>superb>good. D. Good>superb>acceptable.
