In ancient China, bell and drum towers used to play the role of clocks in telling people the time. The bell sounded at dawn (黎明) and drum at dusk (黄昏). Today, bell and drum towers remain in some time-honored cities like Beijing and Xi’an. The bell and drum towers in Xi’an are symbols of the city’s rich past and are among the largest and best-preserved (保存最完好的) of their kind in China.
The Bell Tower sits at the very center of Xi’an. It is 36 meters high. It was built in 1384 and moved to its current (现在的) location in 1582. Four busy roads cross just under the tower. Visitors need to use an underground walkway to reach the tower. Inside the tower, there is a small museum that houses a huge bell as well as some handwritten records on the history of the tower.
The Drum Tower is about 200 meters to the northwest of the Bell Tower. It is a small building. It lies next to a busy street where many restaurants and shops are located. It was built 4 years earlier than the Bell Tower. It is also one of the largest drum towers in China, with a height of 34 meters.
There is a square sitting between the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower. It is the best place to watch the two towers. According to the tourists, the two towers are more impressive in the evening as the lights add beauty to them. Don’t miss them when you take a trip to Xi’an!

“Twelve years ago, I was a professional (职业的) dancer and black belt in taekwondo (跆拳道) when a disease went undiagnosed and destroyed my muscular system. I finally ended up on life support in intensive care with organ (器官) failure,” Kaufman recalled. “I went from living this big life to not knowing how I was going to survive. Luckily, on my birthday in 2009, I received a new heart and was given a second chance at life!”
After volunteering in Los Angeles hospitals, Kaufman started the non-profit organization—Ava’s Heart. She and her organization offered transplant patients services that were often not covered by insurance (保险), including food, gas, co-pays on medicines, and housing.
“What I found out was that if you didn’t have post-transplant housing, you couldn’t get listed and admitted (允许进入) into the hospital,” Kaufman said. She said that for the nearly 110,000 people in the USA waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, it was not just a matter of adding your name to the list. Patients must be financially secure (经济保障的) and be able to afford transportation. What’s more, they must find accommodations (住所) near their transplant hospital. Kaufman runs two housing locations, which allows the patients to remain close to their transplant hospital during the period of their aftercare, usually about three months at no cost.
Her organization also helps donor (捐献者) families, which she thinks makes the whole circle complete. “The donor is the whole story. Without the donor, there are no transplant centers, no transplant surgeons, no me. In my eyes, the donors are the heroes.” Kaufman said.
So far, Ava’s Heart has helped nearly 90 families with burial costs for their loved ones whose organs have saved countless lives. Kaufman also works closely with those who help build relationships with donor families and spread awareness about the importance of organ donation.
26.Why did Kaufman talk about her memory in Paragraph 1?
A.To suggest the importance of life. B.To remember her dull and boring days.
C.To show the reason for paying back. D.To confirm her love for the profession.
27.For a transplant patient, admission into the hospital requires the following EXCEPT ________.
A.health insurance B.nearby housing
C.financial security D.affordable transportation
28.Which of the following best describes Kaufman?
A.Brave and caring. B.Grateful and warm-hearted.
C.Practical and hard-working. D.Loyal and easy-going.

Imagine spending your nights sleeping thousands of times, each time for only four seconds.
Does it sound like a nightmare (噩梦)? Well, that’s exactly how chinstrap penguin (帽带企鹅) parents sleep.
Like other penguins, chinstrap penguins spend much of their time in the water, catching fish to eat. But when the time comes to raise their young, they return to land.
They lay the eggs in nests (巢) made of small rocks. One parent keeps the nest safe, while the other hunts for food. For one thing, Brown skuas (贼鸥) like to attack (攻击) the eggs and young penguins.
Besides, other penguins nearby may take rocks from the nest, putting the young in danger. It can be dangerous for the young if their parents get a good night’s sleep. However, staying awake for 24 hours a day is hard for penguin parents.
Faced with these challenges, chinstrap penguins have found an unusual way to solve the problem. When scientist first noticed chinstrap penguins kept blinking (眨) their eyes, they wondered if more was happening than just blinking. So they tested the brain (大脑) activity of the penguins and recorded the birds on video. The study showed that the tired parents were actually sleeping very often and for very short time periods! Each sleep lasts only about four seconds. By taking over 10,000 microsleeps a day, the penguins get a total of about 1l hours of sleep a day. How amazing!
It’s not clear if the microsleeps help the penguins feel truly rested, or if they’re just enough to keep them going. The scientists don’t know if the penguins sleep this way at other times of the year, or only when they’re raising their young. They also don’t know if other kinds of penguins have similar sleeping habits, Further research is needed to learn more about these flightless birds.
29.What does the passage tell us about chinstrap penguins?
A.Their living environment. B.Their sleeping habits.
C.Their eating habits. D.Their future life.
30.How long do chinstrap penguins sleep a day by using microsleeps?
A.Four 4 seconds. B.Over 10,000 seconds.
C.About 11 hours. D.About 24 hours.
31.How did the scientists do the study?
A.By drawing the tired parents’ notice.
B.By showing dangers to the penguins.
C.By recording sleeping habits of all kinds of penguins.
D.By testing chinstrap penguins’ brain activity and recording videos.
32.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Raising young penguins is a challenging task
B.All kinds of penguins take microsleeps every day.
C.The penguins nearby will help look after chinstrap penguins
D.Chinstrap penguin parents don’t work with each other well
D
A company called OpenAI has recently announced a new version (版本) of its AI artist, DALL-E 2. Given just a short sentence describing a picture, the tool can create different pictures in many different styles.
The name “DALL-E” mixes the name of the robot in the movie WALL-E, and the name of the famous Spanish artist Salvador Dalí. He painted amazing but impossible pictures. Like Dalí, DALL-E 2 can create pictures that are unbelievable, for example, Teddy bears doing crazy experiments as scientists.
OpenAI has already changed the world once with its AI writing tool, GPT-3. GPT-3 was trained on a great deal of writing in many different styles. When it came out in 2020, it surprised people by quickly creating complete and well-written articles in different styles. It is so powerful that OpenAI has tried to be prudent when it comes to how it allows people to use the tool, to make sure that it isn’t used for harmful purposes.
DALL-E actually grew out of an effort to make full use of GPT-3 to pictures. OpenAI released the first version of DALL-E in 2021. DALL-E 2 is even more powerful. DALL-E 2 has been trained on huge numbers of pictures with matching descriptions, which means it “knows” a lot about how different things look, even when they’re shown in different styles, such as a photo, a painting or even a cartoon.
Does DALL-E 2 have anything new? The user can select an area of an image and ask DALL-E 2 to put something into the picture, or take it out. Some artists are worried that it will take their place if a computer system can create such high-quality pictures so conveniently. OpenAI says the tool will allow artists to be creative in new ways.
To make sure the tool is properly used, OpenAI already has strict rules about the types of pictures that can be created with DALL-E. One of those rules avoids DALL-E to create realistic pictures of actual people. By now, the company hasn’t released DALL-E 2. Instead, it is allowing a small number of people to work with the tool to learn more about what works well, and to discover possible problems.
33.Where does the name “DALL-E” come from?
A.From a film and a robot. B.From a toy and a robot.
C.From an artist and a robot. D.From a company and a movie.
34.What does the underlined word “prudent” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.careful B.confident C.patient D.hard-working
35.How is DALL-E 2 different from DALL-E 1?
A.It applies GPT-3 to pictures.
B.It writes in many different styles.
C.It can tell the different appearances of things.
D.It sets no rules about the types of pictures that can be created.
36.What can be the best title for the text?
A.How DALL-E 2 Makes Use of GPT-3 B.Why OpenAI Develops Its DALL-E2
C.DALL-E 2 HelpsOffer Artists New Jobs D.From Words, DALL-E 2 Creates Pictures

Don’t avoid joining your family time or activities. You can also help your parents take care of your younger brother. This way you can feel more connected and loved.
Although your best friend has moved to another city, it is a good idea to connect her online.
