A Florida teen is gaining national attention with her graduation speech and a basket of strawberries. “Care for some strawberries?” Brenda said at her graduation from Mulberry High School. After jokingly saying there might not be enough, she went on, “These are no ordinary strawberries.” She held up a series of strawberries, showing what each stands for: sweat, dirt, aches, and pains.
Brenda described herself as the daughter of two tireless farmers who immigrated from Mexico and spent most of their days working in fields of strawberries, blueberries, and cucumbers. “My motivation has been rooted in my immigrant (移民) culture.” Because of this, she chose to focus on that in her speech. “Many students used to be ashamed of their upbringing but today we’re proud of what makes us.”

The principal of Mulberry High School, Michael Young, was one member of the audience getting emotional. “The speech was very powerful — her fruit did help paint a good picture of things she wanted to convey,” Young said.

根据第三段中“Despite the hot sun and body pains, my parents back me up heart and soul in my education, which is more important than anything else in my academic success. (尽管阳光炙热,身体疼痛,我的父母还是全心全意地支持我的教育,这对我的学业成功来说比什么都重要)”可知,父母的支持是Brenda成功的关键。故选D项。

There was no possibility of taking a walk that day. We had been wandering, indeed, in the leafless shrubbery an hour in the morning; but since dinner (Mrs. Reed, when there was no company, dined early) the cold winter wind had brought with it clouds so dark, and rain so likely to pour, that further outdoor exercise was now out of the question.
I was glad of it. I never liked long walks, especially on cold afternoons. Awful to me was the coming home in the raw twilight, with nipped (冻伤的) fingers and toes, and a heart saddened by the scoldings of Bessie, the nurse, and humbled (贬低) by the consciousness of my physical inferiority to Eliza, John, and Georgiana Reed.
Eliza, John, and Georgiana were now surrounding their mama in the drawing room; she lay on a sofa by the fireside, and with her darlings around her (for the time neither quarrelling nor crying) looked perfectly happy. She had stopped me from joining the group. She said that she regretted to be under the necessity of keeping me at a distance, but that until she heard from Bessie, and could discover by her own observation that I was trying to acquire a more sociable and childlike nature and a more attractive and lovely manner, and that she really must exclude me from privileges intended only for good children.
“What did Bessie say about me?” I asked.
“Jane, I don’t like questioners; besides, there is something truly forbidding in a child taking up her elders in that manner. Be seated somewhere; remain silent until you can speak pleasantly.”
The study room adjoined the drawing room and I slipped there. It contained a bookcase. I soon possessed myself of a volume stored with pictures.
With the book on my knee, I was then happy; happy at least in my way. I feared nothing but interruption, and that came too soon.

A.impossible B.possible C.likely D.no problem
2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.the drawing room contained a bookcase.

3.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.Jane enjoyed some privileges in the family
B.Jane couldn’t enjoy equal rights with her cousins

4.The main idea of this part of the story is ________.

I was so angry that I shut the door forcefully and stepped out of my home. Then I noticed down the street two neighbor girls walking toward our house. I was so shy that I saw the big spruce (云杉) tree in our yard and jumped under the low-hanging branches (树枝). A pile of dried-up brown needles were beneath the tree, and you can’t imagine the pain those sharp needles caused to my body. After I was sure the girls had passed by, I ran to the front door and knocked at it loudly.
“Who’s there?” I heard.
“It’s Billy! Let me in!”
The voice behind the door answered, “Billy doesn’t live here anymore. He ran away from home.” Looking behind me to see if anyone else was coming down the street, I said, “Mom! I’m sorry. I’m still your son. Let me in!”
The door opened and Mom’s smiling face appeared. “Did you change your mind about running away?” She asked.
“What’s for supper?” I smiled back.

“I can’t wait any longer,” I thought. I took a flashlight from the corner and went out. The light showed me the way, but the shadows of the trees looked scary, like claws. I held the flashlight more tightly. I was worried that Dad might be lost or in trouble, so I walked into the forest slowly.
The wind blew harder, and the leaves made noise. I was scared and kept looking back, but I saw nothing. The flashlight was dying. Just then, I heard someone shout, “Xiaoyu? Is that you?”
It was Dad! I shouted, “Dad! I’m here!” I saw the light move, and then I saw his orange ranger clothes. I ran to him and jumped into his arms. I could smell the pine on him, and I almost cried. “Son, why are you here?” Dad asked. Dad’s hands were cold, but he hugged me hard. “My phone stopped working. I was worried that Dad might be lost or in trouble, so I walked into the forest slowly. 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。短文介绍了做家务对孩子有益。
1.前文提到“Many children don’t like doing chores, because they think it's boring. Some children think they just need to learn their subjects well and there is no need for them to do chores. (许多孩子不喜欢做家务,因为他们觉得家务很无聊。有些孩子认为自己只需要学好功课,没必要做家务),呈现了孩子对做家务的负面态度;而下文通过“First...”“Second...”等逻辑词,开始分点阐述做家务的好处,形成“提出错误观点—转折论证正确意义”的结构。此空需承担转折过渡作用,A选项“But in fact, doing chores is good for children.(但事实上,做家务对孩子是有益的)”中的“But”精准衔接前文的负面认知,同时“doing chores is good for children”直接点明下文的论述核心,符合语篇逻辑。故选A项。
F选项“Children can learn classification (分类) skills when they pick up their toys and put them away.(孩子们收拾玩具并将其归位时,能学会分类技能)”中,“learn classification skills(学习分类技能)”对应主旨句的“teach children certain skills(教孩子一些技能)”,“pick up their toys and put them away(收拾玩具并归位)”则是具体的家务场景,用实例验证了主旨,使抽象观点更具体。故选F项。
根据下文“Some chores like sweeping the floor and cleaning the room are a kind of physical exercise. Children should not study all the time. A healthy life needs balance (平衡).
下文提到“Nowadays it’s common for both parents to work. When they get home from work, they are often tired. So they don’t have much time or energy to do chores.(如今父母双方都工作很常见,他们下班回家后通常很累,没有太多时间和精力做家务)”,核心是“家庭成员分担家务的意义”。D选项“Last but not least, everyone in the family will be happy to share chores at home.(最后但同样重要的是,家里的每个人都会因分担家务而开心)”中,“Last but not least”符合列举好处的逻辑顺序,“share chores at home(在家分担家务)”则直接衔接下文“父母累、需要孩子帮忙做家务”的场景。故选D项。
5.前文提到“So they don’t have much time or energy to do chores.(所以他们没有太多时间和精力做家务)”,此处需说明“孩子帮忙做家务”的具体作用;下文又提到“And children can also find great pleasure in helping their parents.(而且孩子们也能从帮助父母中找到极大的快乐)”,形成“父母+孩子”的双向积极效果。E选项“If children can help their parents with some simple housework, their parents will be happy.(如果孩子们能帮父母做一些简单的家务,他们的父母会很开心)”符合语境。故选E项。

Dear David,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble communicating with your parents and feeling misunderstood. I understand quite well that you are anxious and feel terrible. The following are my suggestions.
First of all, you’d better try to communicate with them when they are in a good mood. This way, they will be more willing to listen to you. In addition, I recommend that you should express your thoughts and feelings calmly and avoid getting angry or raising your voice, as this may make them defensive.
When the shrill (尖锐的) ring of the phone echoed (回响) through the living room, Jane was still sleeping. She slowly opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the bedside table. It was already nine o’clock! Though still sleepy, Jane knew she had to get up because her mother had been working in her office day and night for several days, and she couldn’t expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the phone. She quickly put on a coat and dashed into the living room. As she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, “Good morning, my dear!”
It was the voice of her father, a seaman who seldom returned home due to his duties, earning money to support the family. On hearing her father’s voice, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared.
Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere (氛围). At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities, earning the pride of their parents.
“Good morning, Dad. Why are you calling so early on a weekend?” Jane asked, pretending to be slightly annoyed. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday. I have ordered a cake online and it will arrive at our doorstep in the late morning. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother.”
Upon hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a twinge of embarrassment (尴尬). How could she have forgotten such an important day!
While chatting with her father, Jane’s eyes wandered around the room, and she saw a lot of dirty clothes scattered (散落) on the sofa. The floor hadn’t been cleaned for a few days, since her mother had been too busy with work to deal with such housework.
Looking at the clock again, Jane realized she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.
“Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!” Jane said and hung up the telephone.
Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him.

“Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him. After listening to Jane, Tom readily accepted her idea. The big cleaning plan began. Jane collected the clothes from the sofa and began to do the laundry. Meanwhile, Tom was busy cleaning the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what tiring work his Mum had at home! One hour later, the cleaning work was finally finished. They even prepared a simple breakfast for Mum. With everything ready for the big moment, they knocked at their mother’s bedroom door excitedly.
“Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. Confused and surprised, Mum stood frozen. When Mum realized what had happened, a warm current rose in her heart. Staring at the clean floor and the washed clothes, she was moved to tears and hugged them tightly. “It is the best birthday gift I have ever had!” Mum said proudly. Around 11 a.m., another surprise — the cake that Dad had ordered — arrived as well. Mum took out her smartphone, took a picture of the three of them eating the cake happily, and sent it to Dad. What an unforgettable birthday for her!

“What’s that you’re carrying?” she asked. “Some clothes and food.” I replied. “If you want to run away, that’s all right.” she said. “But you came into this home without anything and you can leave the same way.” I threw my suitcase and sandwiches on the floor and started for the door again.
“Wait a minute,” Mom said. “You didn’t have any clothes on when you arrived, and I want them back.” This infuriated me. I tore my clothes off, shoes, socks, underwear and all — and shouted, “Can I go now?” “Yes,” my mom answered, “but once you close that door, don’t expect to come back.”
