Lauren Price has come a long way from a taxi driver to an Olympic champion. She pursued her Olympic dream all the way to winning the middleweight gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.
“When I look back now, I have to pinch myself at times, because I still think it’s mad that I won the Olympics,” Price told the media.
Raised by her grandparents, she was always encouraged to play sports. “They’ve always backed me. If it hadn’t been for them, I wouldn’t have achieved anything,” Price said. Her grandma used to say to her, “Reach for the moon and if you fall short, you’ll land on the stars.”
She began with football. But Price was also a high-standard kickboxer and was then talent-scouted by a taekwondo coach before she switched to boxing.
“For me the big turning point was as a child being inspired by Kelly Holmes. I remember watching her on TV and I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, I want to go to the Olympics’,” Price recalled. “I had that dream over the years. I just worked hard. I believe if you put the effort in, you’ll get to where you want to be.”
When Price was breaking into the Welsh boxing team, funding was extremely limited. So she worked as a driver for a taxi company when she was still a teenager. “I was training from Monday to Thursday and then I was driving a taxi on Friday and Saturday nights. I’d start work at 5 pm and I’d finish at 4 in the morning, picking up all the drunken passengers,” she remembered. That was a different kind of education. “It’s quite funny now when I look back,” Price smiled.
Ultimately, she excelled as a boxer. Price won every major gold medal going, despite the difficulties of competing against bigger opponents outside of her weight class.
4. Which event did Price compete in at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics?
A. Football. B. Kickboxing. C. Taekwondo. D. Boxing.
5. Who inspired Price to go to the Olympics?
A. Her grandmother. B. An athlete. C. A coach. D. A passenger.
6. Why did Price think driving a taxi was a different kind of education?
A. Price learned how to drive a taxi well during that period.
B. The job taught Price lessons that formal schooling didn’t provide.
C. Price received special training while working as a taxi driver.
D. The passengers helped Price improve her communication skills.
7. What does Lauren Price’s story mainly intend to tell us?
A. Success belongs to the persevering.
B. A man who has no imagination has no wings.
C. The best way to predict the future is to create it.
D. A fall into the pit, a gain in your wit.

The first and only fungus (真菌) on a global conservation group’s’ “25 Most Wanted List”, the big puma fungus, which is actually quite small, has been found in the rainy mountains of Chile, almost 40 years after it was first documented.
The mysterious species of fungi that lives underground in Chile’s Nahuelbuta Mountains had only ever been found in the wild once. An expedition team from the Fungi Foundation in Chile set out for the temperate forests of the Nahuelbutas in May 2023 to retrace the footsteps of Chilean mycologist (真菌学家) Norberto Garrido, who discovered the big puma fungus and described it to Western science in 1988.
They timed the expedition to coincide with the exact dates in May that Garrido had hiked the mountains more than 40 years earlier. “It’s possible that the reproductive parts of the big puma fungus — the mushroom — are only fadingly visible above the soil on the same few days each year, which made the timing of the mission a crucial factor,” said Claudia Bustamante, a mycologist and member of the expedition team.
On the last day of the expedition, the Fungi Foundation led a workshop and a community hike to look for fungi in a nearby forest. During that hike, two of the local participants found a group of about four mushrooms that all matched the description of the big puma fungus.
The expedition team carefully collected the mushrooms, leaving the mycelium (菌丝体) in the ground, and took the mushrooms to the Fungi Foundation’s Central Laboratory (FFCL). Although the mushrooms matched the physical and microscopical description of the big puma fungus, it was via a DNA analysis that eventually the team justified their conclusion.
“It was truly a unique moment when we managed to be in the right place at the right time to see the mushrooms. These types of expeditions are essential to conservation efforts because an increasing number of species are threatened. Understanding the biodiversity that exists and interacts within a specific area helps us comprehend the ecosystem’s dynamics and its potential to adapt to ongoing changes,” said Daniela Torres, leader of the expedition.
8. What do we know about the big puma fungus?
A. It is rarely found in the wild. B. It is bigger than typical mushrooms.
C. Garrido retraced its location in 2023. D. Chile used to be its habitat 40 years ago.
9. What does the underlined phrase “coincide with” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Put off. B. Correspond to. C. Work out. D. Deal with.
10. How did the scientists confirm the identity of the big puma fungus?
A. By collecting mushrooms randomly. B. By observing details in microscopes.
C. By leaving mycelium in the ground. D. By examining the genetic features.
11. A possible scientific value of finding the big puma fungus is its role in ______.
A. honoring Garrido’s discovery. B. managing the biodiversity of fungi.
C. revealing how the ecosystem evolves. D. highlighting the 25 Most Wanted List.
D
Media literacy (素养) is finally getting some late-arriving attention. Whether it’s the increasing awareness of political disinformation or the threat of AI, discussions about media literacy are on the rise. The adoption of media literacy in the classroom, however, stagnates.
The driving force for providing kids with media literacy skills often gets lost in the moral panic over technology and kids. Fear has overrun reason, and people can’t decide whether to blame social media, mobile devices, tech companies, or the Internet. They are concerned with claims that technology and social media are the causes of teenage mental health issues despite the weak associations. In response, too many solutions are “ostrich policies (鸵鸟政策) ” that want to ban devices and shut down social media but don’t address more fundamental issues.
Policies that set age limits on social media access and restrict devices during school to minimize disturbance can be helpful but are incomplete solutions. Social media didn’t invent bullies (霸凌) or the enormous effect of peer pressure. Social media platforms may be a new battleground, but they are not the source. Unfortunately, many current policies ignore the need to teach kids how to manage these challenges. There is frighteningly little attention paid to preparing kids to make good decisions when they will, unavoidably, get online.
On the bright side, the rapid development of AI and increasing attention to the amount of misinformation online have helped normalize the acceptance of media literacy as a core skill. While suggestions to limit inappropriate device use, increase face-to-face socialization, and engage in outdoor play arc beneficial, they do not build the core skills that will keep kids safe offline and are fundamental to well-being and life success: good citizenship, self-awareness and self-control. Those things take teaching, whether you are online or outside.
Media literacy is an essential life skill that, once learned, can be applied to any content. While waiting for public education to catch up, parents and educators can build media literacy skills at home with numerous resources, ranging from family technology contracts and discussion guides to easy activities that can be done at home with kids.
12. What does the underlined word “stagnates” in the first paragraph probably mean?
A. Gets far ahead. B. Falls apart suddenly.
C. Falls well short. D. Gets started officially.
13. What causes people’s moral panic over technology and kids?
A. Belief in the rapid growth of new technologies
B. Concern over cutting kids off from the Internet
C. Inability to balance the use of social media and health.
D. Fear of technology causing mental health issues in teenagers.
14. What does paragraph 3 of the text focus on?
A. The sources of peer pressure. B. The benefits of minimizing disturbance.
C. The problems of current policies. D. The disadvantages of social media platforms
15. Which of the following belongs to media literacy?
A. Reducing social media exposure. B. Applying critical thinking to media.
C. Increasing face-to-face interactions. D. Recognizing the dangers of social media

Tom Perry concentrated hard. The rocket competition would begin shortly. He had never lost a contest, but that didn’t calm him. Being on top counted, and he pushed himself to remain there.
The other kids, however, rarely came over to him. No way was he going to let them ignore that he’d win again. Still, he often wondered: why didn’t winning make people like him better?
He opened his toolbox and began assembling (组装) his launch pad (发射台). Then he checked his rocket again. It looked perfect — especially compared to the others.
But one caught his eye. A thin boy named Ed lifted it carefully. Its paint shone in the sunlight, and its parts fit perfectly. His critical eye detected that this rocket could beat his.
The announcer explained the competition. Tom barely listened, his gaze constantly drifting to Ed’s rocket. Suddenly his heart did a leap — as Ed lifted the rocket to place it on the launch pad, his fin (翼) had caught against something, pulling it away from the fuselage (机身) — not enough to break it off, just enough to loosen it.
But Ed hadn’t noticed. He glanced back at Tom and gave a thumbs-up. Tom felt a surge of guilt but decided he wasn’t going to say anything. Anyway, it was up to Ed to keep checking his rocket.
Then the competition began. Most rockets gained respectable heights, while a few shot wildly. “Ed Malovich will be our next contestant,” the announcer said, interrupting Tom’s daydream. Immediately Ed lifted his rocket and headed to the launch area.
Without thinking, Tom shouted. “Ed, hold on — your fin’s loose!” Ed froze, his smile vanishing as he carefully examined the wing. Tom took out instant glue from his toolbox and helped Ed fix it. “Here — press it tight!” he instructed, squeezing the tube until his knuckles turned white. “Why do you help me?” Ed asked, with a puzzled look. Tom smiled, “Some things,” he said softly, “are more important than winning.”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为80字左右;
Minutes later, Ed’s rocket blasted (轰鸣) skyward, shooting up as if unstoppable.

B. The job taught Price lessons that formal schooling didn’t provide.
C. Price received special training while working as a taxi driver.
D. The passengers helped Price improve her communication skills.
7. What does Lauren Price’s story mainly intend to tell us?

C 13. D 14. C 15. B

根据第一段中“Whether it’s the increasing awareness of political disinformation or the threat of AI, discussions about media literacy are on the rise.(无论是对政治虚假信息的日益意识,还是人工智能的威胁,关于媒体素养的讨论都在增加)”以及划线单词句中“The adoption of media literacy in the classroom, however, …(然而,媒体素养在课堂上的普及却……)”
根据第二段中“The driving force for providing kids with media literacy skills often gets lost in the moral panic over technology and kids. Fear has overrun reason, and people can’t decide whether to blame social media, mobile devices, tech companies, or the Internet. They are concerned with claims that technology and social media are the causes of teenage mental health issues despite the weak associations.(在对科技和孩子的道德恐慌中,为孩子们提供媒体素养技能的驱动力往往会消失。恐惧已经超越了理性,人们无法决定是归咎于社交媒体、移动设备、科技公司还是互联网。他们担心科技和社交媒体是青少年心理健康问题的原因,尽管两者之间的联系很弱)”可知,对科技的恐惧导致青少年的心理健康问题导致了人们对科技和孩子的道德恐慌。故选D项。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中“Policies that set age limits on social media access and restrict devices during school to minimize disturbance can be helpful but are incomplete solutions. Social media didn’t invent bullies (霸凌) or the enormous effect of peer pressure. Social media platforms may be a new battleground, but they are not the source. Unfortunately, many current policies ignore the need to teach kids how to manage these challenges.(设置社交媒体使用年龄限制和在校期间限制使用电子设备以尽量减少干扰的政策可能会有所帮助,但这是不完整的解决方案。社交媒体并没有发明欺凌或同伴压力的巨大影响。社交媒体平台可能是一个新的战场,但它们不是源头。不幸的是,许多现行政策忽视了教育孩子如何应对这些挑战的必要性)”可知,第三段主要关注的是当前政策的问题。故选C项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Media literacy is an essential life skill that, once learned, can be applied to any content. While waiting for public education to catch up, parents and educators can build media literacy skills at home with numerous resources, ranging from family technology contracts and discussion guides to easy activities that can be done at home with kids.(媒体素养是一项重要的生活技能,一旦学会,就可以应用于任何内容。

Go, or weiqi in Chinese,指物,且关系词代替先行词在从句中作主语,所以用关系代词which引导。故填which。
故填the。
故填to present。
故填are revealed。
故填by。
故填strategic/strategical。
the balance between the black and white pieces, the beauty in the strategic placement of the pieces, the energy flow following each move三者为并列关系,作并列主语,所以空处需用连词and。故填and。

Last semester, I struggled a lot with my English listening test, which nearly drove me to give up. Luckily, I chose to see each wrong answer as a chance. With active measures like the careful analysis of the mistakes and the targeted advice from my teacher, I made great progress eventually.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为80字左右;
Minutes later, Ed’s rocket blasted (轰鸣) skyward, shooting up as if unstoppable.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Minutes later, Ed’s rocket blasted skyward, shooting up as if unstoppable. It pierced the blue like a silver arrow, soaring higher than any other. The crowd erupted as Ed leapt up, tears sparkling in his eyes. Ed won the competition, Tom the second place. “You made this possible,” Ed said, pulling Tom into a quick, fierce hug. Other competitors gathered around them, laughter and cheers filling the air. “Winning had never felt this good.” Tom thought to himself, “It wasn’t about being on the top — it was about lifting someone else up. And that might count most.” (85 words)
