When I was in middle school, I met my English literature teacher, who was new to teaching. She was only 22 but she always did her best to make learning fun. She would give us a special mini-notebook for every student’s birthday. I had this simple small notebook. She had filled the first few pages telling me how much she loved having me as a student, how far she knew I would go, and other affirmations. It seemed small but for a 13-year-old child who had a hard home life, it meant a lot!
In my junior year of high school, in one English class, we were discussing a story when one student called Carl made a comment. The teacher was dismissive (不屑一顾的) and said Carl was wrong. The next day, the teacher said he was wrong to dismiss what Carl said so quickly. “Let’s take a look at that again.” After the discussion, it became clear that Carl’s comment was indeed unreasonable, but I was impressed that the teacher recognized his mistake publicly and did what he should.
When I was in Grade One, my mother gave me one really odd haircut. On the first day back at school, the kids laughed at me, so I ran out and hid. The headmaster found me and took me back. He asked me to wait outside for a minute while he talked to the class. The next day, we had a meeting with the whole school and he walked up on the stage with all his hair cut and criticized (批评) the bad behavior.
Twenty years later, I met him at the local college. I thought he didn’t remember me, but he said my name and the event. He was and is a hero in my eyes.
4. What does the underlined word “affirmations” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Orders. B. Suggestions.
C. Encouragements. D. Descriptions.
5. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. Carl read a new story to the class before discussion.
B. The author was impressed by the teacher’s teaching method.
C. The English teacher made an immediate apology to Carl in class.
D. Carl’s comment wasn’t paid much attention by the teacher at first.
6. Which of the following best describes the headmaster?
A. Honest and brave. B. Patient and organized.
C. Funny and strict. D. Kind and respectable.
7. Where can you probably read this passage?
A. In a life column. B. In science fiction.
C. In a fashion magazine. D. In a guidebook.
C 5. D 6. D 7. A

根据第一段中“She had filled the first few pages telling me how much she loved having me as a student, how far she knew I would go, and other affirmations. It seemed small but for a 13-year-old child who had a hard home life, it meant a lot!(她在前几页写满了她多么喜欢我作为她的学生,她知道我能走多远,以及其他 affirmations。这些话看似平常,但对一个时年十三、家境艰难的孩子而言,却有着千钧之重)”可知,老师在笔记本前几页写满了对作者的喜爱和对他未来的期待等内容,这些话语对家境艰难的作者来说意义重大。由此推知,老师写的都是鼓励学生的话语,让作者在逆境看到了希望。所以划线词affirmations的意思是“肯定、鼓励”,与C项“Encouragements”同义。故选C项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“In my junior year of high school, in one English class, we were discussing a story when one student called Carl made a comment. The teacher was dismissive (不屑一顾的) and said Carl was wrong. The next day, the teacher said he was wrong to dismiss what Carl said so quickly.(高二那年英语课上,我们正讨论一篇小说,一位名叫Carl的同学发表了见解。老师当时不以为然地驳回了他的观点。次日,这位老师主动承认错误,表示自己不该如此草率地否定Carl的想法)”可知,老师最初没有重视Carl的观点。故选D项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“When I was in Grade One, my mother gave me one really odd haircut. On the first day back at school, the kids laughed at me, so I ran out and hid. The headmaster found me and took me back. He asked me to wait outside for a minute while he talked to the class. The next day, we had a meeting with the whole school and he walked up on the stage with all his hair cut and criticized (批评) the bad behavior.(一年级时,母亲给我理了个特别古怪的发型。开学第一天,同学们都嘲笑我,我直接冲出教室躲了起来。校长找到我,把我带回学校。他让我在教室外稍等,自己先进去和全班谈了话。第二天全校集会时,他竟剃光头发走上讲台,严厉批评了这种欺凌行为)”可知,作者因发型受到同学们的嘲笑,校长带头剪掉头发并公开批评这些学生的行为,既体现了他对学生的关爱,也展现了他值得尊敬的品格。故选D项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据全文内容,结合第一段中“When I was in middle school, I met my English literature teacher, who was new to teaching.(当我上中学的时候,我遇到了我的英语文学老师,她刚开始教书)”、第二段中“In my junior year of high school, in one English class, we were discussing a story when one student called Carl made a comment.(在我高中三年级的一节英语课上,我们正在讨论一个故事,这时一个叫卡尔的学生发表了评论)”和第三段中“When I was in Grade One, my mother gave me one really odd haircut. On the first day back at school, the kids laughed at me, so I ran out and hid.(我上一年级的时候,妈妈给我剪了一个很奇怪的发型。回到学校的第一天,孩子们嘲笑我,所以我跑出去躲了起来)”可知,作者回忆了学生时代的生活和老师们的影响,属于个人生活经历分享,最可能出现在生活专栏中。故选A项。
C
On a cold day in February 2012, two hunters in eastern Russia discovered a tiger cub (幼兽) lying in the snow. It was about 3 months old. “It hadn’t eaten for days and was frozen. It was too weak,” remembered Dr. Dale Miquelle, director of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Russia Program. The cub was sent to a local wildlife observer who cared it back to health.
The cub was an Amur tiger. “Only about 400 Amur tigers are still living in the world. In the past, we always sent cubs to zoos,” said Dr. Miquelle. “Now we have a way to give them a second chance at life in the wild.” He and his co-worker took the cub to a new wildlife center which was designed for raising wild animals without people living around. It uses hidden cameras and covered fences (围栏) to keep workers out of sight. That way, the animal doesn’t lose its natural instincts (本能) or become dependent on humans. In the center, the cub, now named Zolushka, learned to hunt and grew up into a big healthy tiger.
By the spring of 2013, experts agreed Zolushka was ready to return to the wild. They set it free in the Bastak Nature Reserve in the area, where there used to be tigers 50 years ago but they have died out.“Their survival (存活) rests only in the hands of humans,” said Dr. Miquelle.
During the next two years researchers watched Zolushka’s progress. They set up cameras to take photos of Zolushka. Zolushka not only survived, but also thrived. Then, in December 2015, the cameras showed exciting news: Zolushka had become a mother! For the first time ever, a tiger that humans had raised and returned to the wild had given birth to two cubs of her own.
Thanks to the work of people like Dr. Miquelle , there is new hope for these beautiful cats.
8. Why are covered fences used in the wildlife center?
A. To raise animals more easily.
B. To keep animals’ wild instincts.
C. To make animals depend on humans.
D. To stop animals returning to the wild.
9. What does the underlined word “ thrived ” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Left. B. Suffered.
C. Developed. D. Returned.
10. What is the text mainly about?
A. How a tiger was saved and protected.
B. What environment is needed for a tiger.
C. What people should do to save wildlife.
D. How an injured animal should be treated.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards Dr. Miquelle’s work?
A. Opposed. B. Doubtful.
C. Unknown. D. Positive.
B 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据划线词前半句“Zolushka not only survived,( Zolushka不仅活了下来,)”和后文“Then, in December 2015, the cameras showed exciting news: Zolushka had become a mother!(然后,在2015年12月,摄像机显示了令人兴奋的消息:Zolushka成为了一个母亲!)”
根据第一段“On a cold day in February 2012,2, two hunters in eastern Russia discovered a tiger cub (幼崽) lying in the snow.(2012年2月的一个寒冷的一天,两个猎人在俄罗斯东部发现了一只虎崽躺在雪地里。)” 故选A。

Can you remember the day when you spoke your first word? If you can, you are unusual. Try to imagine what the first few months of your life were like. I am sure you just spent most of your time eating, sleeping and crying. As you grow older, you were awake more of the time. It took your parents more time to play with you and talk to you. You watched and listened curiously. You began to know that people made certain sounds to go with certain things.
Then you began to try making the sounds you heard. And step by step, you were able to make the right sound for one thing. On that day you came to understand the secret of language. The secret is that a certain sound means a certain thing. One sound might be as good as another. But it is no good as a word unless everybody agrees on its meaning. Only when a group of people use the same set of sounds of things can they understand each other. Then, and only then these people do have a LANGUAGE.
After you found the secret of language, you learnt words. Some of the words mean things, such as BOOKS, CHAIRS and SHOES. Some words mean doing things, such as GO and SWIM. And other words describe things, such as GOOD and DIRTY. Soon you learnt to put words together to express one’s idea, such as “I want to go out and play with my friends.” This is language. By means of language people can communicate. So we say languages are means of communication.

例如,结合最后一段中“Anna wanted to talk to Mary at lunchtime, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. (安娜想在午餐时间和玛丽谈谈,但她到处都找不到她)”和“She thought about telling the teacher, but Mary would hate her if she did that. (她想告诉老师,但如果她那样做,玛丽会恨她的)”可知,安娜想和玛丽交流,她认为作弊是不对的,也想避免两人友谊破。由此推知,最终安娜会说服玛丽向史密斯先生承认她的错误,玛丽也会同意。老师原谅了玛丽,两个女孩又成为了朋友。故答案为:Anna would persuade Mary to admit her fault to Mr Smith and Mary would agree. The teacher would forgive Mary and the two girls would become friends again.

Miquelle.
During the next two years, researchers watched Zolushka’s progress.
A. Opposed. B. Doubtful.
C. Unknown. D. Positive.
D

There were two exams that day — math and geography. Anna really hated math. It was her worst subject. Mary looked at her, and then looked away quickly. Anna thought Mary looked pleased, because she didn’t have a problem with math, she didn’t have a problem with anything… She was perfect!
“We were friends, but she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks now. She promised to help me go over for the math exam too, but then she’s forgotten all my calls and texts. And when I rang her house, her mum just told me she was busy…” Anna thought angrily. At that moment, Mr. Smith asked all the students to enter the exam room.
Anna couldn’t answer some math questions. Suddenly she saw Mary sitting two rows in front of her. Anna couldn’t believe it! Mary was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Is that how Mary always got such good grades? She felt really angry at Mary, and thought about telling the teacher, but… “Stop writing,” said Mr. Smith and started to collect the exam papers. Oh no, Anna hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!
Anna wanted to talk to Mary at lunchtime, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. Anna went to the library to prepare for the geography exam, which was her favorite. But she couldn’t concentrate. “Unfair! Mary was getting good grades by cheating all that time.” She thought about telling the teacher, but Mary would hate her if she did that. Just then, Mr. Smith walked past her table…
