Shashiyu was once a poor village in Hebei Province, but now it has changed into a rich and livable place.
In the 1940s, villagers in Shashiyu had little food and few clothes, but they had a strong wish for a better life. Zhang Guishun, the Party secretary of Shashiyu, encouraged his villagers to do their best to pull themselves out of poverty (贫困). “In the ancient Chinese story, Yu Gong could move mountains with his strong will and hard work, why can’t we? When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. The Old Bookstore at School Gate
My group and I chose the old bookstore at our school gate for our Discovery Project. I had always wondered why its wooden door looked so worn out, and I wanted to find out what it used to be like .
First, we decided to interview the owner, Mr. Li. He has run the store for 20 years. He told us that many years ago, the bookstore only sold storybooks for children, and the door was painted bright blue. Back then, students often sat on small stools inside to read for free . Then we observed the bookstore carefully now. The door is still wooden but has no paint left, and it sells not only books but also school supplies like pens and notebooks.
