The Amazing Penguin Rescue
In the summer of 2016,the ship MV Treasure sunk, creating an oil spill.Thirteen
hundred tons of fuel oil were flowing right in the middle of the African Penguins'habitat.
Soon the oil covered about 20,000 penguins.Without swift help, the seabirds would have
no chance of survival.Volunteers were showing up by the thousands and I also took part in
what was the largest animal rescue operation ever.
A warehouse was turned into a rescue center near the habitat and hundreds of pools
were built to hold about 100 oiled birds each. When walking into the center,I couldn't be-
lieve my ears.I had expected to walk into a chorus of honking and squawking().In-
stead, the center sounded like a library. The penguins were dead silent. My heart ached
for the painful birds.Cleaning them all seemed like an impossible task. But we had to carry
on like doctors in an emergency room. There was no time for doubt.Cleaning oil off a pen-
guin wasn't easy.Even with more than 12,500 volunteers,it took a month to bathe all
20,000 birds at the center.
While volunteers were busy bathing the oiled penguins, another crisis()was de-
veloping.Oil from the spill had started moving north.Tens of thousands of penguins were
in the oil's path. But we already had our hands full with 20,000 recovering birds. If any
more birds were oiled,we wouldn't have enough resources to save them.
One researcher came up with an idea:What if the penguins were temporarily moved
out of harm's way?Experts decided to have a try.Volunteers rounded up the penguins and
released them 500 miles away. The hope was that by the time the seabirds swam home, the
oil would be gone. The plan worked!Another 20,000 penguins were saved.
The entire penguin rescue took about three months.More than 90%0 of the oiled pen-
guins were successfully returned to the wild.Looking back on the rescue,I am still amazed
by the work of the volunteers. What I could hardly believe was that we accomplished an
impossible task.

C
Coffee is an essential part of Italian culture and since arriving here over six months
ago,I have definitely drunk a lot of it!
Of course, coffee is also very popular in the UK but coffee culture in Italy is a com-
pletely different story. In Italy, when you order a coffee in a cafe or bar,you are presented
with a tiny, bitter espresso. This is "normal coffee"for Italians and they are not so inter-
ested in the huge coffees that we drink in the UK.In addition, while take-away coffee is
extremely popular among the British,it is not very common at all in Italy, especially in
non-touristy areas.Generally,Italians prefer to drink their tiny coffees while standing at
the bar and,for many, this short break is an important part of their day.
Typically, breakfast in a bar in Italy involves a coffee and a pastry.I have been attrac-
ted by the lovely cafes in the Italian town I'm living in.These cafes sell all sorts of mouth-
watering pastries, either plain or filled with cream, chocolate, jam or Nutella,as well as
delicious coffee.Cappuccinos are very popular at breakfast time and,for me,a creamy cap-
puccino and a pastry full of Nutella is the perfect way to start the day.I think it's nice to
head to a bar to grab a coffee and pastries for breakfast before work and it's luxury to take
more time to enjoy such a breakfast at the weekend.
Finally,I have found that coffee in Italy is so much cheaper than coffee in the UK.
Normally,an espresso or a macchiato(an espresso with a small amount of milk added)costs
around a euro and a cappuccino about 1.50!They are small,of course, but this means that
in Italy it is possible to go out for coffee regularly without breaking the bank.
28.What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 2?
A.Espresso is very popular in Italy.
B.Italians prefer small coffees to large ones.
C.Coffee culture in Italy is very different from that in the UK.
D.Italians have more time spent in cafes than the British people.
29.The underlined word "pastry"in Paragraph 3 probably is
A.a container to provide cream
B.some attractive fruit
C.a powder to be mixed with coffee
D.a dessert served for breakfast
30.Which of the following best describes coffee in Italy?
A.Drinking coffee in cafes is expensive.
B.Coffee is not allowed to be taken out.
C.Italian coffee is mainly imported from the UK.
D.Coffee often comes along with other food as breakfast.
31.What is the author's attitude towards Italian coffee?
A.Positive.
B.Disapproving.
C.Doubtful.
D.Uncertain.

Imagine being able to use energy from the sun all the time, even when it's night.
That's the idea that scientists at Caltech(California Institute of Technology)are exploring.
They're working on collecting sunlight in space and sending its energy to Earth.
Caltech's scientists have created a special tool for this project. They call it MAPLE.
MAPLE and two other devices are part of a project that was sent into space in January,
2023.MAPLE's job is to test the idea of sending energy wirelessly from space to Earth.
We're used to using wires to move electrical energy from one place to another. But sending
energy without wires is a lot trickier.
The method used by Caltech's scientists depends on the way waves act when they
meet.Imagine two waves coming together as they travel in the same direction. If the tops
of the waves line up,they combine to make a bigger wave. But if the top of one wave lines
up with the low point of the other, the waves cancel each other out.The Caltech team has
found a way to control the timing of lots of microwaves so that they can combine their pow-
er,and focus the energy in one direction. It's a little like using a magnifying()glass
to focus sunlight into a small, hot point of light.
To prove that the system could work,MAPLE sent energy to two devices just 30 cen-
timeters away in space. This energy was then turned into electricity, which made two
small lights light up.Next,MAPLE sent energy all the way down to a lab at Caltech. The
scientists were able to detect the energy, proving that it's possible to send solar energy to
Earth from space.
Dr.Hajimiri, one of the project's leaders, thinks that one day,the system could be
extremely useful, bringing energy to places that need it,all over the world. He believes
that in the future,we'll be able to send energy to remote regions and areas destroyed by
war or natural disaster.
32.What is the challenge in Caltech's project with MAPLE?
A.Solar energy detection.
B.Wireless energy delivery.
C.Sending devices into space.
D.Using wires to move electricity.
33.How does the Caltech team concentrate solar power?
A.By changing the way microwaves act.
B.By magnifying waves coming together.
C.By controlling the timing of microwaves.
D.By lining up the waves in opposite directions.
34.What potential benefit could the system bring in the future according to Dr.Hajimiri?
A.Warning people of natural disasters.
B.Turning solar energy into electricity.
C.Providing a solution to energy shortages.
D.Sending energy to regions in urgent need.
英语试题(十二)第4页(共8页)
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Use of Solar Energy in Space Exploration
B.The Challenges of Generating Energy Without Wires
C.The Development of a New Tool for Collecting Electricity
D.The Possibility of Sending Energy Wirelessly from Space to Earth

How Houseplants Boost Your Mental Health
Growing indoor plants is becoming a global wellness trend.A 2025 WHO report
shows 68%of the potted plants kept at home are not just for decoration.36
Studies
reveal touching rosemary leaves reduces cortisol()by 19%,while watering orchids
activates the same brain regions as meditation.
The magic lies in three aspects.37 Caring for leaves or observing vines creates
natural "micro-breaks"from digital screens. This explains why office workers with desk
plants report 30%less eye strain.
38 Harvard neuroscientists found that successfully growing plants triggers dopa-
mine(多巴胺)release comparable to completing a crossword puzzle.“Each new leaf gives
tangible proof of nurturing skills,"explains Dr.Emma Lin.
Surprisingly, plants enhance social bonds.39 Apartment dwellers who exchange
plant cuttings have 45%0 more neighborhood connections.Community gardens also become
spaces for intergenerational storytelling, where elders teach herbal knowledge to children.
Starting with low-maintenance plants ensures early successes, which fuels motivation.
Even an ordinary plant pot next to your window can be your stress-reliever.Early wins
with easy-care plants build confidence.40
A.Plants offer a natural escape from digital overload.
B.For beginners, choose plants matching your lifestyle.
C.Seeing your first new leaf is like making a small breakthrough.
D.For instance,73%of plant owners share gardening tips online.
E.Urban planners are designing vertical gardens in subway stations.
F.They're actually a curing device to improve emotional well-being.
G.Nurturing plants helps to bring about a sense of achievement.

I'm Bella,your swimming instructor.I'll bet you
feel a little strange here with all these young

Ada?"Bella said in a soft voice."I didn't begin

"But I really wanted to swim, and I'll bet you
do,too."Ada couldn't help but smile,realizing
that she would sure have fun trying.
