the pleasant conversation I was having with her.
After pushing Chloe on the swing for a long while,I
glanced around the park. There were still no parents
around her.
“Chloe,”I asked,“here are your par-
ents?"Chloe was looking at me seriously. It was a
strange way for a small child,who shouldn't
have a care in the world."They're in the army,
serving as guards in a faraway place. They can
rarely stay by my side,"she whispered. My eyes
were suddenly wet.I was sorry for her, with ap-
preciation and respect for her parents.Just then,
I found an old woman was looking at us all the
time -with a smile.She was Chloe's grandmother.

these nonverbal signals are working together
ship positions encourage body language that
shows power and confidence.Signals include
standing tall, gesturing only from the waist
up,head straight and forward,and talking

looking out of the window. But she'd just put
that down to him being busy.(一周前,她在和
If Lauren had known a little more about
body language, she'd have realized that Gus
was trying to tell her he wasn't sold on her idea.
He just wasn't using words..(如果Lauren对肢
Gus
we are able to read these signs,it works to our
advantage. For example,it can help us know
about people's reaction to what we say so that

someone is showing the behavior,he may be
uninterested or unhappy:arms folded in front
of the body;body turned away from you;
However,
if someone really wants to hear what you

People who don't feel confident in social situations often have trouble interacting with
others. However, anyone can boost their confidence by ensuring their body language con-
癸
veys a positive message.Practice these gestures and movements to project an air of confi-
dence.
Lean Forward
When you are in a conversation, leaning forward indicates interest and attention,
while maintaining distance indicates that you are disinterested.Research suggests that non-
verbal signals such as leaning forward and facing straight ahead help convey feelings of in-
terest.
Slow Your Movements
Fast movements make you appear more anxious.Everything from hand gestures to
your walking pace can make a difference;slow down and notice how you feel more confi-
樊
dent when you take your time.
The key, however,is to maintain other signals like eye contact and posture while
典
moving more slowly.Slow movements combined with poor eye contact and slouched(
posture may cause people to see you less confident.
Keep Your Chin Up
Do you look at the ground when you are walking or talking?Instead, keeping your
head up and facing your conversation partner conveys interest and confidence. It might feel
unnatural initially, but you will eventually become used to this more confident pose.
Give a Firm Handshake
A weak handshake is a sign of a lack of confidence,so offer a firm hand when meeting
的
others. How long your handshake lasts can also influence how people perceive you.
Research has found that the length of a normal handshake is around three seconds or
less.Handshakes lasting longer than three seconds are associated with less enjoyment of
the interaction and more anxiety.
1.Which way of walking conveys confidence?
A.Walk fast with head straight up.
新
B.Move fast with a leaning posture.
C.Walk slowly with proper eye contact.
D.Move slowly with maintained distance.

2.Which body language requires considering the length of time?
A.Lean Forward.
B.Slow Your Movements.
C.Keep Your Chin Up.
D.Give a Firm Handshake.

Words are powerful:they have the ability to lift up the lowest of the low or tear down
the highest of the high. But a strong argument could be made that our body language is
even more influential. The most effective communication occurs when the importance of
body language in teaching is acknowledged. When these nonverbal signals are working to-
gether with our words,it creates communication synergy.
It has been suggested that two-thirds of our communication is nonverbal.Positive body
language in a classroom setting has the ability to motivate, inspire and engage. It can not
only give you the confidence you need to teach but can also inform your students that you
actually know what you're talking about. It can even make your students feel safe and confi-
dent enough to participate in the lessons more frequently.
Most leadership positions encourage body language that shows power and confidence.
Signals include standing tall, gesturing only from the waist up,head straight and forward,
and talking while pointing to others, which are obvious ways to exercise control. But when
teaching, the nonverbal signals need to show a different type of leader. These signals con-
vey warmth and understanding, reminding your students that you are approachable and
there to help them grow. For example, fix your eyes on one student for about 15-30 sec-
onds before changing to another student, which is one of the best ways to keep students'
focus.Nod your head.Give a thumbs up-maybe two!Show them they are on the right
path and they will be more confident in continuing down it.
The importance of body language can never be ignored. It's desirable that you should
advocate using body language in teaching and pay attention to the use rule and using skills.
You should use right, natural and clear body language. It's crucial that you create good
classroom atmosphere,inspire students'imagination and grasp students'mood.

Do Animals Communicate?
When we think of communication,we normally think of using words-talking face to
face, writing messages and so on.But in fact we communicate far more in other ways. Our
eyes and facial expressions usually tell the truth even when our words do not.
Then there are gestures, often unconscious:raising the eyebrows, rubbing the nose,
raising the shoulders, tapping the fingers, nodding and shaking the head. There is also the
even more subtle()body language of posture:Are you sitting or standing with arms
or legs crossed? Is that person standing with hands in pockets, held in front of the body or
hidden behind?Even the way we dress and the colors we wear communicate things to oth-
ers.
So,do animals communicate? Not in words, although a parrot might be trained to re-
peat words and phrases which it doesn't understand. But,as we have learnt, there is more
to communicate than words.
Take dogs for example. They show their teeth to warn, shake their tails to welcome,
and stand firm with hair upright to fight. These signals are surely the equals of the human
body language of facial expressions, gestures and posture.
Color can be an important means of communication for animals. Many birds and fishes
change color, for example,to attract partners during the mating()season.And mating
itself is commonly done after a special dance which both partners take part in.
Here, again, there are striking similarities to young men and women who dress up to
meet partners at parties, where the music is often too loud for word communication.Com-
munication there takes place through appearance and movement.
The most carefully planned dances in the animal kingdom are those that bees use to
communicate. With body movements alone they can tell other bees the direction and dis-
tance of a newly discovered food.
All these examples may suggest instinctive (rather than intelligent communi-
cation. But human body language is largely instinctive, too. And,in many ways, body lan-
guage says far more than intelligent word communication ever can.

How to Read Candidates'Body Language in an Interview
Body language matters,especially in interviews.1 Our posture,gestures,move-
母
ments or facial expressions can shape our reputations.Learning to read body language is
about understanding candidates'motives.
Reading body language during interviews can provide valuable insights into a
candidate's personality.2 Here are some common interview body language signals that
you can learn to read.
Observe extreme behaviour.A candidate's harmless action doesn't mean they won't fit
in well at your company. But be careful about extreme behaviours, like a person constantly
checking their phone.
3 You can read people's body language by observing changes in their movements
擗
or posture.Imagine, for example, that a candidate suddenly starts tapping their foot.
Maybe they feel the interview is taking too long.Or perhaps they're facing an uncomforta-
ble question.
Connect the dots.4 For example, people may cross their arms when they're cold.
But,when you see a candidate crossing their arms, crossing their legs and balling their
fists at the same time, prepare yourself for an aggressive(咄咄逼人的)answer..
Candidate experience greatly depends on an interviewer's body language.Positive body
language can make candidates relax and open up.Negative body language can spark()
defensive and reserved reactions.5
A.Spot the difference.
B.Ask detailed questions.
C.It's not what you say,it's how you say it.
D.They don't necessarily act the same way all the time.
E.However, understanding body language isn't an exact science.
F.You can't always tell what a specific gesture means on its own.
G.Be aware of mistakes to preserve a positive candidate experience.
