The first time I met Jane,we became best friends. We enjoyed the same things. We were excited to find each
other. Our families became friends and everyone knew wherever you found Jane, you found me.Jane was at my house
quite often that summer. We played and practised flutes ()
When school began,we talked on the phone and went over to each other's houses. Then it seemed as if we were
put to a test.We both made new friends.Jane started to hang out with hers.We seldom talked on the phone. When we
did take a minute to talk, one of her new friends would come up and Jane would walk away with her, leaving me hurt.
I'm sure she didn't know how bad I felt.I began to hang around with my new friends, but it wasn't the same.I
met Erma, also a friend of Jane's.She was in the same situation. We decided to talk to Jane.
The call was not casy. However, when we talked on the phone,we were friends again.I explained my feelings
and so did she.I realized I was not the only one hurting. She also felt left out. There were times when I didn't even
notice I was ignoring her.We talked for a long time and I felt a heavy weight lifted off my heart.I felt so happy. We
decided we wanted to be with our new friends, but would never forget the fun and friendship we had.
Today,I look back on all of this.Jane is not my best friend anymore, but more like my sister. We still enjoy the
same things.Janc taught me that things change, people change but it doesn't mean you forget the past.It simply means
you move on and treasure all the memories.

"Merry Christmas from ihc Family",a country song by Robert Earl Keen, tells the tale of a festive get-together.
Many listeuers will recognize the chaos (the singer describes;cven more than that, they will definitely identify
with bis struggle to recall how he is related to the various guests."Fred and Rita drove from Harlingen,"Mr.Keen
sings,'Can't remember how I'mkin(有亲属关系的)to them."
That may have somcthing to do with the English language. It is often joked that anyone around your age is a
"oousin"and anyone older is an "uncle"or "aunt".English is rather bare in its terms for family members.Other
languages pay far morc attention to the details.
Take brother"and"sister"for instance.Societies that value age-order highly often have different terms for older
brother.older sister, younger brother and younger sister.Thesc arc ge,jic,di and mei in Chinesc or ani, ane, ototo,
imoto in Japanese.
Chinese even requires the speakers to remember whether a relative is older or younger than they are, whether
relatives of their parents are older or younger than they, and so on.There are many armchair theories about the
relationship between language and culture that do not hold up to careful examination. The East Asian languages'focus
on seniority ()however,is actually related to the importance Confucianism places.on the virtue of respecting
your elders.
Actually, all languages permit you to describe relationships in any amount of detail your listener would like. The
focus that some cultures put on labelling every possible relation with a distinct term does not mean that those who lack
those terms do not pay attention to family networks.Every English-speaking family seems to have at least one
member who can sort out the complicated relations and tell you that Henry Ford was a great-great-grcat uncle. But
cach family also has members who couldn't care less, waving a hand and saying"uncle"or"cousin"
8.How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By criticizing a forgetful guest.
B.By praising a recognized singer.
C.By illustrating a shared experience.
D.By presenting a chaotic get-together.
9.Why does the author mention the examples of Chinese and Japanese?
A To indicate their respect for the elders.
B.To make a contrast with English language.
C.To emphasize the influence of Confucianism.
D.To make an analysis of East Asian languages.
10.What does"armchair theories"in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A Bascless assumptions.
B.Detailed descriptions.
C.Contradictory thoughts
D.Convincing explanations.
11.What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A.Labelling every relation is no casy
B.English speakers value family networks ns well.
C.Some people enjoy sorting out complicated relations.
D.General terms for relatives indicate weaker family bond.

After hours of working, many pcople cxpericnce significant drops in energy and find themselves in desperate
nced of a recharge. But instead of grabbing a coffee,it may be more worthwhile to take a short sleep break known as a
power nap
A power nap can "providc the refreshment you need if you're struggling to stay alert or haven't had a good
night's sleep,"explains Rebecca Robbins,a sleep scientist.A power nap"gives people the chance to rest for a short
penod of time to boost workplace productivity (),"she says.but they are only beneficial when they are done
correctly.
How long should a power nap be?Sleep experts say that an effective power nap should only last 20-30 minutes to
increase alertess throughout the day.According to James Maas,a former professor and chair of psychology at Cornell
University who invented the term'power nap"more than 50 years ago,"It's an opportunity to shut your eyes, breathe
slowly and recharge."
For most people,15 minutes should be enough to power through the rest of the work day. However,Maas warns
that lengthier naps are counterproductive and even harmful."Never nap for 60 minutes. If you power nap any time
longer than 40 minutes, you're going to wake up feeling very weak and tired for another hour or so."
Shelby Harris,a clinical psychologist, adds that the best time to take your power nap is between i p.m.and 3 p.
m.because napping any later in the day"can interfere with your sleep at night."
In contrast to coffee, which is likely to"damage your sleep at night and only offer short term energy for about 30
minutes,"Robbins says a power nap is a healthier altemative to improve workplace performance, strengthen memory
and boost creativity.
Harris adds naps have iong-term heaith benefits too, such as improving your mood and aiding in stress
management."Power naps can reduce accidents and mistakes while also improving attention, alertness, concentration
and performance. They can even be used effectively to fight sleepy driving when a short nap is taken just before
getting behind the wheel,"she says.
12.What did James Maas suggest about a power nap?
A.The best time to nap is from I p.m.to 3 p.m.B.The longer you nap,the more refreshed you'll be
C.It's better to be kept within 15 minutes.
D.Napping too long does more harm than good.
13.Good power naps have the following benefits except
A.contributing to our refreshment.
B.improving our memory and mood.
C.disturbing your sleep at night.
D.helping effectively manage stress.
14.How does the author develop the passage?
A By giving definitions.
B.By making comparisons
C.By showing examples.
D.By quoting from others.
15.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Tips on Taking Power Nap8
B.Ways to Get You Refreshed
